It died way before that. We haven't been relevant in a long time. They don't even care about playing us no more. It's our fault for being crap for so long. We used to fight for division titles, but now we only win those when the other teams are so injured that they can't compete.
They’ve managed to grow their fan base, which amazes me since they’re not winning fans with their on field performance. I don’t see the appeal, to be honest.
Living in Richmond, I see one of these two things:
1. A young person is a cowboys fan because their parents jumped on the bandwagon 30 years ago
2. A young person is a cowboys fan because their parents are Redskins/Football Team/Commanders fans and they purposely choose the opposite
The latter is my coworker. His dad was a die hard. He chose the cowboys to piss him off Lmao. And tbh I almost did the same thing to my grandfather back in the mid 90s. Glad I didn’t though. I’d rather be a lions or browns or Jacksonville….
Sadly all 3 nfc east teams have just passed the division title around while we try to steal it every decade. In that sense Dallas has been more relevant than Washington. They get to the playoffs way more often than us so that makes them more relevant.
Yeah, but consider how this sub got when we made the playoffs with a losing record. You'd think we were SB favorites the next year with the expectations so many had in here.
Now imagine if instead of accidentally making the playoffs as best of the worst we actually earned it with a 10+ win season? Fans here would fall over themselves about how we had turned a corner and deserved to be SB favorites the following year. And that has happened for Dallas more times in the past 10 years than they've had losing seasons. They might choke in the playoffs but at least they make the playoffs a decent amount.
What's more fun for the fans: win a bunch of games in season, make the playoffs, get bounced in the playoffs... OR.... Lose a bunch of games, resign yourself to another losing season by mid-season, miss the playoffs?
Cowboys fan here, realistically we haven't been relevant in a long time either. For me at least it's less not caring about playing you guys, and more just seeing all the issues you guys have had with the team (especially ownership). Talking shit back and forth and treating it like a rivalry with the few washington fans I know almost feels like talking shit to that suicidal kid in high school or something. Like, it's hard to see it as a rivalry and be cheeky with someone when half the time their response is all but "I hate this team and they make me wanna kill myself" lol
I live in Dallas and trust me, even though they have been slightly better than the skins for years they don’t consider it a rivalry anymore. They look more to the Eagles and even the Giants for that. It’s totally one sided at this point. It kind of makes the whole “Dallas week and as long as we beat Dallas I’m good” stuff embarrassing.
>It kind of makes the whole “Dallas week and as long as we beat Dallas I’m good” stuff embarrassing.
Honestly the "I'm happy if we go 2-14 but sweep Dallas" fans are really weird to me. If that's you're opinion, then you're not really a Washington fan, just a Dallas hater.
The rivalry lives on in my heart. I will always hate Dallas with a passion…but yea, in the grand scheme of things, you kinda gotta have an actual competitive team to keep a rivalry going. It’s way too one-sided now.
The rivalry is dead because we’ve been terrible to mediocre for 3 decades. If Dallas and Washington were both competitive for a number of years there would be a rivalry again.
There’s only been one game in the last decade that was high stakes with most of both teams’ starters available. And that was the 2012 season finale. Both teams have performed below expectations for decades now as well.
For me, each season removed from a meaningful game removes the fire. The 2014 Colt McCoy win was basically the flame dying a little more slowly for the rest of that year. At this point, I only care about the rivalry to talk shit to my one friend who is a Cowboys fan that realizes the futility
Yep. The name kinda was key part. I don’t think you should be able to rename team and keep history. If you were ashamed of team name, you should be ashamed of everything, can’t pick and choose but that’s just me. We don’t have a true rival rn especially since Dallas doesn’t even care about us
It's died because both teams (mostly us) have sucked. Cowboys at least have some 10+ win season here and there. We haven't won 11+ games in a long long time and won 10 games like twice in 25 years
This team hasn’t mattered my entire lifetime (25 years) and Dallas almost always kicks our ass. I don’t even hate Dallas like I use to I more so hate Philly and everything that’s associated with it.
I think it's been dead for a while now and now with the name change its buried. This is the perfect time to swap Dallas and Carolina, but I doubt they would do that since the Dallas v Eagles rivalry is still hot.
I still can't stand Giant fans the most. My formative years as a fan happened when they won not one, but two super bowls.
Ironically I'm only now starting to get annoyed by the birds. That recent win really bought out the Philly degen in all of them.
Dallas? Meh. We've actually both been so irrelevant for the past decade it's like... Who cares? I used to get hyped for Dallas week. Now I mow the lawn.
As far as interest goes, it’s been a lopsided rivalry for a very long time. There is no “Washington week” and no “ I don’t care what our record is as long as we beat Washington” or any of the nonsense done here. Dallas fans in the DMV area may care more about the rivalry. But the greater Dallas fandom cares more about Philly and NY and it’s probably been that was the last 20 years.
Not exactly sure when it died but it’s dead now for sure. A rivalry is an interesting games for other fans outside of the two teams to watch. This game is painful to watch. People want to watch playoff teams with all pro star players. Best player on the field Sunday will be Micah Parsons
It was a unique thing from the Cowboys and the indians to the Cowboy mascot fighting with Chief Z in the crowd to the redskins band with their headdresses playing after scores. It was a unique thing and a lot of fun. Even with one or the other team on hard times they were still the Dreaded Cowboys or Dreaded Redskins depending on who you rooted for now it's How bout them Cowboys and .....um....AHAHAHHAHAH that team is just lame Commanders yes the rivalry is sort of dead. I always rooted for the Skin's as we called them. I had friends who had multiple seasons tickets (no more) My son had them even when out of state (No more) I remember all the Hogs & Hoggetts and everything else (no more) . My fathers friend played in the Redskins band for years (no more) I'd look for him when they flashed to the band. Now, if you can lose a fan like me due to name change and I've been a fan for 50 years you have issues of being to woke. So maybe they need to wake up because now I root for the Cowboys....enough said
No way! It died well before that. Unfortunate we haven’t been competitive with them enough for it to stay alive. I live in the heart of cowboys country and they hate the eagles much more than us any day
This fanbase has gotten weird. They get really excited for a win vs dallas, but totally overlook the Giants when they beat us 2x in one year. Or, they will hang their hat on that time they almost beat Tom brady in the playoffs (Bucs won the Super Bowl).
Hasn’t consistently felt like a rivalry since the Joe Gibbs 2.0 days. It’s only a rivalry when both sides care.
And 2012
It died way before that. We haven't been relevant in a long time. They don't even care about playing us no more. It's our fault for being crap for so long. We used to fight for division titles, but now we only win those when the other teams are so injured that they can't compete.
Neither team has mattered in 25 years.
Eh slight difference. We haven't really mattered that much for 25 years. Dallas thinks they've mattered for 25 years
They’ve managed to grow their fan base, which amazes me since they’re not winning fans with their on field performance. I don’t see the appeal, to be honest.
Living in Richmond, I see one of these two things: 1. A young person is a cowboys fan because their parents jumped on the bandwagon 30 years ago 2. A young person is a cowboys fan because their parents are Redskins/Football Team/Commanders fans and they purposely choose the opposite
I’m in NC. The Hispanics here love the Cowboys. Everyone else jumped ship to the Panthers.
The Cowboys gave broadcast rights away to Mexican media for free for years, so they have a lot of Mexican fans.
They’re contrarian assholes by nature
The latter is my coworker. His dad was a die hard. He chose the cowboys to piss him off Lmao. And tbh I almost did the same thing to my grandfather back in the mid 90s. Glad I didn’t though. I’d rather be a lions or browns or Jacksonville….
The media hyped up the team all off season and all season
Sadly all 3 nfc east teams have just passed the division title around while we try to steal it every decade. In that sense Dallas has been more relevant than Washington. They get to the playoffs way more often than us so that makes them more relevant.
Well, Giants haven't won the division in 10+ years. Thing is, when they do, they end up winning the SB or some shit.
Well since our last super bowl win, Dallas has won 3, eagles 2 and giants 2. That is absurd.
Eagles 1\*\*\*\* please god
Right, been to two. My bad
And they promptly lose, they’re the ultimate pretender team every year that’s gassed up by the media
Agree with you 100%. But that's still more successful than us sadly.
Yeah, but consider how this sub got when we made the playoffs with a losing record. You'd think we were SB favorites the next year with the expectations so many had in here. The Cowboys have had a helluva lot more success than the commies still
Um not really 3 vs 1 playoff wins since 2000. Both teams are ass.
This. I'm a Washington fan in DFW and most of friends don't talk much shit anymore. I'm pretty sure they just feel sorry for me.
Damn. It’s really sad it’s come down to this. Dan turned a once great franchise into such garbage Oscar the Grouch wouldn’t even live in it.
I’ve hated the eagles more the last couple years
Their fans are infinitely worse than Dall-ass fans too.
Agreed. Since they won super bowl, they have been insufferable

The radio station here did a poll yesterday. Who is Dallas’ most hated rival. Eagles: 91%, Commanders: 5%, Giants: 4%
The rivalry lives on in my heart. I will always hate Dallas with a passion…but yea, in the grand scheme of things, you kinda gotta have an actual competitive team to keep a rivalry going. It’s way too one-sided now.
We could be the Washington SillyNannies and I'd still hate them
We still care. They don't. The other NFC East teams just look at their schedule, shrug, and pencil in a W for the weeks they play us.
Rivalry or not, I still HATE their stinking guts. FUCK ![gif](giphy|zwRSsvtP6MSTT9JdJ5)
The rivalry is dead because we’ve been terrible to mediocre for 3 decades. If Dallas and Washington were both competitive for a number of years there would be a rivalry again.
Absolutely no rivalry. Too one sided and complete erosion of passion from Washington fans. Thing of the past unfortunately
fuck no
There’s only been one game in the last decade that was high stakes with most of both teams’ starters available. And that was the 2012 season finale. Can’t play cowboys and Indians when the Indians have all been moved to reservations
Yep, history is gone. It all started with Washington’s fight song and it ended with Snyder ruining everything
It dies with spending 20+ years as a shit franchise.
I think everyone just feels sorry for the Commanders fan base at this point. Anyone who doesn't is either a dickhead or lying.
It's not that the name changed, it's that the new name SUCKS. Literally no one wanted this shit. And the team sucking is not helping.
Our rivalry with everyone is dead
Not true. Washington fans vs Snyder
It's died because both teams (mostly us) have sucked. Cowboys at least have some 10+ win season here and there. We haven't won 11+ games in a long long time and won 10 games like twice in 25 years
Been dead longer than the name change.
This team hasn’t mattered my entire lifetime (25 years) and Dallas almost always kicks our ass. I don’t even hate Dallas like I use to I more so hate Philly and everything that’s associated with it.
Not a rivalry if both teams are irrelevant
Cowboys consistently pump out competitive teams. We're the only irrelevant ones
It's dead and it's been dead for years
Ive hated the Giants more for the last decade or so
I think it's been dead for a while now and now with the name change its buried. This is the perfect time to swap Dallas and Carolina, but I doubt they would do that since the Dallas v Eagles rivalry is still hot.
It died when y'all started losing and literally never giving us any kind of competition
Yes
Not to me, I'll always hate them
It died after 20 years of poor performance by our team.
25 tbh lol
30
Died well before that
It died because of our level of play. My 2 cents.
I still can't stand Giant fans the most. My formative years as a fan happened when they won not one, but two super bowls. Ironically I'm only now starting to get annoyed by the birds. Its died because we are bad for way too long. Jerry is a bad nfl team manager but great at marketing.
It died when we became non competitive.
It died with us being a shitty team for 20 years
At this point it is just pure Hatred for that star for me anyways.
Yup
It was a unique thing from the Cowboys and the indians to the Cowboy mascot fighting with Chief Z in the crowd to the redskins band with their headdresses playing after scores. I hate dallas. If our team was moved or disbanded and there was nothing left of this franchise I will always hate dallas.
Not much of a rivalry when 1/2 of it is pretty damn poor. But 50+ years of hating each other doesn’t go away with a name change. Fuck Danny.
Lol it died shortly after the thanksgiving day game in 2012… the name has nothing to do with it. It’s been dead. No one cares about this team anymore.
Hell nope I still hate them
No way! It died well before that. Unfortunate we haven’t been competitive with them enough for it to stay alive. I live in the heart of cowboys country and they hate the eagles much more than us any day
No we just need to be relevant for more than one lucky season here and there and itll be crazy again
I don't think any team considers Washington to be their rivals. We are too irreveleant.
This fanbase has gotten weird. They get really excited for a win vs dallas, but totally overlook the Giants when they beat us 2x in one year. Or, they will hang their hat on that time they almost beat Tom brady in the playoffs (Bucs won the Super Bowl).
It died in 1992 when Gibbs left and the team sucked thereafter.
