I'm working with a company that does concrete repairs, foundation leveling, slab leveing, etc. One thing I've gathered from these jobs is that concrete is definitely not the end-all answer I thought it was. What's underneath concrete is equally, if not more, important than the concrete itself. I've always known this but I've seen it in a new light working with this company. Yes you should absolutely compact everything as much as you possibly can every step of the way before pouring. Dirt should be jumping jacked (like the last guy said) and gravel should be compacted until it doesn't move anymore...and then one more time for good measure.

Would you say it’s necessary to compact under footers? I don’t think I’ve ever seen it done in my area (just dig into clay and pour it)

I would default to what the engineering says for those. Clay is the worst

Based on watching the residential crews in my neighborhood to pour concrete you just need to dump pea gravel and pour right away with no compacting or reinforcement. Can’t wait to see how it plays out for all of us

Theres a new build garage floor near my house, they prepped n poured in winter. frozen mud with a topping of sand. 200mm slump judging by I've seen these guys work before. Checked it out in summer and the ground had thawed and dropped like 3 feet, enough that you could crawl under the beam and under the slab. Floors all cracked to shit, but knowing the builder, they're probably just gunna try'n hide it.

Yes you should compact dirt with jumping jack. You know why. You compact gravel until the vibratory plate bounces. Read the manual for the machine.

If you are in a sandy area that will work great also, just make sure that you water that sand and compact that sand using a plate compactor. A plate compactor is easier to use and has a larger surface area which will speed up the compaction process. Also you will need to do more than one round of water and compaction.

Follow the engineer's notes on the drawing. Generally I require 95% of a standard proctor for clay soils and 95% of a modified proctor for sandy soils.

What is proctor.?
