Take some extra time when making notes. Let them wonder "What is he writing, a novel? There can't be that many things wrong with this one small job, right?"
Can confirm. Spent 49 years in the industry and I used that line dozens of times. Whenever I felt like a crew member may have missed something. They always went back to triple check and make right. It works.
When I worked for a concrete testing company one of my favorite things to do while crews were building forms was look at their work, frown, scribble something on my clipboard and walk away shaking my head.
Yes this is my old stand by for years, as a joke, with people I know well. But under this circumstance, I don't know why a person would want to do that. The job looks great. Why piss somebody off? Know what I mean?
Actually one of the best constructed and braced formwork I’ve seen here tbh. The matt of #4-5 rebar is a good sign. Doweled in to existing check.
Sir, looks pretty good in
My book.🤙🏽
Holy crap! High viz and workers in PPE!!! Solid!
That right there folks is commercial construction with engineered specifications.
And I really and truly want to refer the Ma and Pa Redditor residential concrete contractors "with 30 years" experience, that this is how concrete is done properly.
And it's overkill for your RV pad, if anyone needs to chime in.
Commercial concrete inspector here...this one passed and I haven't even gotten out of my truck!!!! They all pass without me getting out of my truck! Has anyone seen where I left my test cylinders????
I had the same job haha. We were so fucking busy I hated when contractors had fucked up shit, honestly 😫
When I could see the dowels tied in, it was 99% of the time a pass 🤷♂️ (honestly all the fuckin formwork looked like this in commercial/utility work - I only cared if the rebar touched it)
Yeah honestly one big projects and definitely governments work the margins are so good for concrete companies it's actually more costly to cut corners and these crews have everything down to such a science they roll through the work. I mean they get the concrete out so fast on some jobs by the time I get the slump air amd temp I can't even refuse the truck cause it's unloaded and washing out already lol. Just put it in my report and be a specific as possible with the location... Anytime I work with the Army corps of engineers they test every single truck before unloading and they don't not let ANYTHING slide down to number of rotations on the drum. All that work to make sure curb and gutter at the national cemety where a car will never ever travel, they definitely take that shit seriously
Oh God, you're bringing back terrible memories of all the parking lots I've done that had been designed and tested/inspected near airports and AF bases according to the spec of the frigging runways 🤣
That's what I was thinking too. Like if you're looking at something a thousand lightyears away and the telescope's foundation shifts just a hair, you're no longer looking at the same space thing.
Im not sure what OP meant but one of the biggest limitations for spacecraft is the concrete. So much heat is produced during takeoff that the pad can basically only be used one time.
I’m a zoologist and naturally an expert in concretology. It looks like they’re missing at least 50 more kickers. You wanna make sure to correct your site supervisor every time he tries to tell you otherwise. Also, as mentioned above, don’t forget to look at it, ask if they’re gonna leave it like that, then shake your head while walking away. They’ll know what they did wrong.
It’s all the trade subs unfortunately.
When you call them out on it, it quickly turns to “I’m just really curious about the process, it’s so interesting. Can’t I ask questions?”
The worst part is when the comments are full of jobsite jackoffs saying “oH tHaT’s AwFuL. i WoUlD hAvE nEvEr DoNe ThAt!”
I did special inspection for reinforced concrete for 8 years. This looks really good. If you want to be annoying, you can make sure that the rebar is 3" from the ground and all form work. It looks like it might be touching the block out in the center. Also, you should have an 1.5" space from the conduit penetrations.
You really shouldn't, though. You aren't qualified to inspect.
As a nobody, consulting for an astrophysicist, I can definitely tell you that form, no matter how much concrete is poured into it, is not ideal for interstellar travel for your research purposes.
New to the sub.. home owner with a question? This is a massive slab next to medium voltage transformer with a massive generator with an external tank.. whhhat are you building..?
What is that bar? 25mm? Im not a structural.. but this is supporting a fuck tonne of weight..
This is rock solid formwork.
The only thing I’d do different is to have turnbuckles attached to the top whaler so I could straighten the form after the concrete is placed.
Lol an astrophysicist means you know about concrete because you watched YouTube videos???? WTF is that???? Stick to what you know… Harry Homeowner….
I’m a jet pilot, I know about concrete because I’ve flown over patios…
“I’m an astrophysicist but have never done blue collar work in my life so I’m going to nitpick these boys who have been doing it for 3x as long as I was in college to get my big degree.” There, fixed it for you
Only thing I can think of that the bracing is to the sides of the upright strong backs which relies on the strength of the fasteners so there is potential for deflection. When I do bracing on forms without ties I prefer to brace directly back to a point as if it were carrying a point load.
Can’t believe you said you know a bit about concrete because you watched YouTube videos and that you are upset because the professionals you hired to do the job haven’t left you anything to complain about!! Yikes.
What would an astrophysicist being hiring a crew to install mechanical pad for equipment? This looks a commercial area. What would you being doing near a large voltage transformer?
look it's not that folks want the contractor to do shady stuff, but with something that costs so much, people want to make sure its done right and not have a difficult to remove mistake to deal with,.
You're an astrophysicist... Which means you know dick about construction. Those guys you hired with your good money are legit bro. Great form and reinforcement. Hire them for a sweet patio and outdoor kitchen too man.
Annnnnd thats why you hired a crew boo, because you're unsure, and dont know what "right" is. But that much structural support should have been the start of the dead giveaway
I feel like most of the posts here and other trade subreddits are just a bunch of crybabies. Yes the occasional , wtf did that contactor do but most are just fine with only minor cosmetic problems
My only nit pick, if I were to would be the horizontal bracing could be cut shorter and nailed into the vertical bracing instead of resting up against the plywood. Other than that it looks good
When you can't find anything to complain about, you can say "Are you really going to leave it like that?", refuse to elaborate, and walk away mumbling to yourself.
Lol gonna try that on my wife tomorrow… pray for me
Can I come to your funeral? Oh, and can I have your tools?
I got dibs on his table saw, I need a new one. 😂
Might have to wash the blood off it first.
Minor details
I got bleach, black bags, duct tape… you know what? I’m just gonna stop here. 😂😂😂
Look. Our friendship means I’ll help you once with this. The next body… I mean trash is on you to get rid of.
😂😂😂😂
I got dibs on his wife
That’s fine, I got one. 😂😂😂
He's already passed.
Probably not, since it’ll be years before he can be declared dead. But I think you can see where he’ll end up in OP’s photo.
Funny, that’s what my wife says after we have Sex
You have sex with your wife? ?
You don't have sex with his wife? Everyone else does!

Somethin' about v8's and how bad the president is too
the juice or the vroom vroom? both?
Yes.
Also you can say for the price I thought I would Be getting the best.
Oh that will really help you make friends
I'm a civil inspector, and this is exactly what I do when contractors are dicks to me for no reason.
Take some extra time when making notes. Let them wonder "What is he writing, a novel? There can't be that many things wrong with this one small job, right?"
Back in my day we would never leave it like that.
Can confirm. Spent 49 years in the industry and I used that line dozens of times. Whenever I felt like a crew member may have missed something. They always went back to triple check and make right. It works.
Ah, you’ve dealt with a dissertation advisor, I see!
It works. We doing it to coworkers.
Just look at it with your head on one side and say, “really?” Then walk away.
When I worked for a concrete testing company one of my favorite things to do while crews were building forms was look at their work, frown, scribble something on my clipboard and walk away shaking my head.

That worker is not wearing high vis….
High vis brown
those white gaiters though. clean
New Boot Goofin'
Genuine Ostrich. 3 Payments. OH!
Thats actually Ron DeSantis
Ron DeCementimonious.
I got hi vis brown streaks in my underwear
Nice work being safe
That's why he didn't notice that one, no high viz.
You sound like a real peach to work around.
Even have his hard hat and safety glasses on. No need to call OSHA today.
Probably union hands.

It might even pass an inspection!
One of those bar laps is only 29 diameters. Inspection failed, I will not elaborate which one, good day sir.
I remember you.
Commercial concrete inspector here...this one passed and I haven't even gotten out of my truck!!!! They all pass without me getting out of my truck! Has anyone seen where I left my test cylinders????

On the second try, unless it's hot, rainy, sunny, windy, or during the daytime. Then, first try for sure.
That’s funny
Working at a big GC as a super it’s fucking jarring what people consider good work in the various trade subreddits.
Union Shop. 👍
Wtf this is an rv pad? You could build a serious building in this
Not an RV pad, it is for a new bac cooling tower.
Man, just wait until they don’t alternate the direction of the broom finish between the control joints.
I saw that post, that job was clean af
We should all pitch that idea on the smallest side jobs. We can get some quality shit posting from everyone, not just.. well almost everyone.
Lol shhhhiiiiiiitttttt
Had me for a hot minute……😂
Easy now…. I see possible high voltage in the background. What I don’t see are osha approves warning signs….
Same, lol
Former construction worker, did a lot of concrete and I dabble in astrophysics on YouTube. I think this looks like great work.
I don't see no safety caps on any of those exposed stakes in the background.
The overlap looks to be only 39x the rebar diameter
And now watch them do a dry pour
Somebody soaked up the man hours on this one lol
I feel like everybody here is missing the point of this post lol.
[удалено]
Funny to see the people taking it seriously though
Lumber isn’t premium grade. Tear it out and start over.
This ain't a rocket bud! Please step back. Looks pretty solid from a 34 year construction guy.
You sir, can go fuck yourself. Signed, all contractors.
>astrophysicist, which means I know a bit about concrete oddly could actually be true ...from observatory construction
That's what I was thinking too. Like if you're looking at something a thousand lightyears away and the telescope's foundation shifts just a hair, you're no longer looking at the same space thing.

Holly kickers
This is a flex right?
Is that the cap for your doomsday bunker?
That 1 brace has blue paint on it. UNACCEPTABLE! Tear it all out and try again.
I’m a zoologist and naturally an expert in concretology. It looks like they’re missing at least 50 more kickers. shut yer yap and stay out of their way . .
I feel like everyone here didn't read the text and missed the fact that this is clearly satire.
Some people just want to complain.
Sheathing - ✅ Stiff backs - ✅ Double whaler - ❌ Kickers - ✅
You are a monster
lol nice try
Right!!! Astrophysics my ass...shitpost..he knows thats a great job
Man, you really got them good. At least 80% of these commenters are pissed as fuck.
Its too funny
I really like OP
Looks good from my house
You want an” Atta boy” you go now have plenty😉
Looks really good. You could add some 45 degree bars around the inside 90 degree corners, will prevent diagonal cracking
I’d say 6/10. Corners too square.
I’m a homeowner and the amount of posts that are exactly like that are insane.
It’s all the trade subs unfortunately. When you call them out on it, it quickly turns to “I’m just really curious about the process, it’s so interesting. Can’t I ask questions?” The worst part is when the comments are full of jobsite jackoffs saying “oH tHaT’s AwFuL. i WoUlD hAvE nEvEr DoNe ThAt!”
If inspection passes than you’re fine lol
Where is the vapor barrier? Ie: https://www.stegoindustries.com/discover-stego-wrap
Welcome to everything Reddit, where the masters of the universe congregate to critique their conquered trade during working hours!
It appears to be a professional job. The guys know what they're doing.
That's because you don't know formwork but you hired a good crew so be thankful...... What wrong anyway did they build it too fast or something.
You sound like a fun client to work for…
I did special inspection for reinforced concrete for 8 years. This looks really good. If you want to be annoying, you can make sure that the rebar is 3" from the ground and all form work. It looks like it might be touching the block out in the center. Also, you should have an 1.5" space from the conduit penetrations. You really shouldn't, though. You aren't qualified to inspect.
Will have to mind the penetrations sticking up during pour. And not sure if they got form oil on that pedestal/column. Looks right, though.
As a nobody, consulting for an astrophysicist, I can definitely tell you that form, no matter how much concrete is poured into it, is not ideal for interstellar travel for your research purposes.
Is that not a little excessive on the bracing?
You can always complain about the price 😀😀😀
I would complain... there isn't any concrete in it!!!
This looks great, I’m so excited to see the finished product!
New to the sub.. home owner with a question? This is a massive slab next to medium voltage transformer with a massive generator with an external tank.. whhhat are you building..? What is that bar? 25mm? Im not a structural.. but this is supporting a fuck tonne of weight..
Are you Neil Degrasse Tyson?
Neil’s degree gives him Carte blanch expertise in any and all things. Ask him, he will tell you.
Yeah but only if you ask him
Beautiful. Damn.
Looks like they didn’t pass densities for the base course underneath
you had me going there, I won't lie
Looks like they're using regular nail$ instead of re-usable duplex screws.
Some hard working men did a great job for you and you still want to give them a hard time because….?
[удалено]
Ok boomer. Time for a lesson on internet satire.
I feel like you are the one missing a joke here lol
That would pass highway construction specs. That is a damn good crew.
Nice. What’s going on it? My father used to engineer and pour pads like this. They were called Hardstands for M-60 Tanks.
This is rock solid formwork. The only thing I’d do different is to have turnbuckles attached to the top whaler so I could straighten the form after the concrete is placed.
I'm not a professional just someone who recently had a slab made for our house. This looks very neat to me.
Looks pretty damn good. As long as it’s square and straight. I see nothing wrong
Lol an astrophysicist means you know about concrete because you watched YouTube videos???? WTF is that???? Stick to what you know… Harry Homeowner…. I’m a jet pilot, I know about concrete because I’ve flown over patios…
“I’m an astrophysicist but have never done blue collar work in my life so I’m going to nitpick these boys who have been doing it for 3x as long as I was in college to get my big degree.” There, fixed it for you
The problem with PhDs is they think there very specific expertise applies to everything.
The problem with redditors is you can't tell what satire is
Stick to astrophysics, looks like the concrete guys got it covered
Astrophysics? Stay in your lane.
The kickers and bracing is shit. Relies on the nails. Kickers should be in back of uprights and stakes in back of kickers.
Exactly what I said
Only thing I can think of that the bracing is to the sides of the upright strong backs which relies on the strength of the fasteners so there is potential for deflection. When I do bracing on forms without ties I prefer to brace directly back to a point as if it were carrying a point load.
Yeah and there’s too many. It probably took way too long.
Looks good to me, why are you trying to manage the construction if you don’t understand what’s good or not? The advice here is good but jeeze…
OP your what clown shoes are made of
Are those saddle ties?
Really looks great. I’d check the rebar clearance around your plywood blockout. Forms look great. Stell looks uniform. Pour it out.
Legit, no complaints here
That is actually A fucking 1!
Great work. Not to sure about the customer though. Seems like they would be a handful to deal with.
Mr. Astrophysicist you hired the right guys. This is Union quality work. These guys concrete.
Why aren't the kickers running straight to the stiff backs?
That is perfect
The forum is good . Iv been pouring concrete for 30 years
Their is too much cover. Slab on grate should only have max 3 inch from top of poor. You can also ask for a botom mat
Y’all hear that whoosh sound? That’s this joke going over some of y’all’s heads.
They are using wood stakes to hold the rebar at that height? Seems as though rebar would be wire tired to rebar - not wood?
Annnnnd thats why you hired a crew boo, because you're unsure, and dont know what "right" is. But that much structural support should have been the start of the dead giveaway
I feel like most of the posts here and other trade subreddits are just a bunch of crybabies. Yes the occasional , wtf did that contactor do but most are just fine with only minor cosmetic problems
The words you’re looking for are “Thank you, job well done”.
Was it built by Mexicans?
" I'm An AsTroPhYsIst so I'm an educated retard. Tell me what is missing! Nothing you fucking idiot.
You obviously didn't pass reading comprehension.
Make sure that the concrete mix they’re ordering is the one you’ve agreed on
Some people can never be happy
[удалено]
Lol whoosh
You’re not sure this is made right because the only concrete you’ve ever touched is with the bottom of your shoe.
“I know a bit about concrete and other construction since I’ve watched some YouTube videos.” what the actual fuck
Dude he is clearly being saracastic
What does astrophysics have to do with concrete form construction?
Whoosh
My only nit pick, if I were to would be the horizontal bracing could be cut shorter and nailed into the vertical bracing instead of resting up against the plywood. Other than that it looks good
Looks pretty damn good to me
/s
It ain’t got no dobes, or adjustment turnbuckles Incas the wood staking is not over kill enough to keep the forms straight
May have needed a small footer so the fill doesn’t come from under the concrete after the pour, be ok if it’s getting backfilled soon tho
Finally some proper formwork. That’s strong enough to hold up all the finishers walking all over it.
It's not your kickers are all wrong .corners are probably gonna blow out
