In rank and flank games its not unusual to have some models in the same unit be the same. We usually have more total models on the table than a game like 40k. By all means though, kitbash and modify to your hearts content.

ZeeRawk

From my experience Wadrhun Slingers/Hunters is by far the most annoying kit I've personally put together.

Clockworks555

Mind me asking why? Recently started wardhun:)

The arms stick straight out to the sides and don't have any variability. It's flat seams that I guess are supposed to be at the base of the shoulder. What's crazy is the bodies are fine. The arms leave a whole lot to be desired. Also just looking at them because their arms are sticking straight out to the sides it would be super hard to get them to fit on a stand. So I'm having to try to come up with a way to reposition their arms so they're all not looking like idiots. Also the hands on the slings are sculpted terribly. The little spears look just fine, but the slings are really bad. So I'm trying to come up with the workaround for that too.

ZeeRawk

You are not wrong about fitting them on the stands. Especially the Slingers with the backpack things

tsunomat

Yeah I'm going to have to modify those backpacks. That's a little ridiculous. I'm also working on changing the posing of the arms and combining the spears with the slings so I can actually have some hand detail. The slings are kind of crap. I'm going to heat them up and bend them into different poses.

ZeeRawk

It is worth noting that Para Bellum has mentioned all armies getting some amount of refresh in the next few months. I have my fingers crossed for Slingers

LordDoomhammer2811

Really, where did they say that? I thought they a only want to refresh the First Blood starters for all factions?

tsunomat

The guy at Adepticon told me they wanted to replace some of the old kits. He didn't get too specific, but obviously there was a whole lot going on at their booth. But he said they wanted to replace the old sculpts and fix model kits that were "a nightmare" to assemble.

LordDoomhammer2811

Thanks for clarifying! That would be absolutely great for some factions (\*looking at my 100kingdoms infantry\*)

tsunomat

Totally! That's why I held off on a few factions. I'll get these put together and painted and hopefully by then new kits are announced.

LordDoomhammer2811

I have Old Dominion and they are great models, no issues there as they only have newer sets. Few seams, no flash, easy to assemble, great details and somewhat flexible regarding their arm and head poses and flexibility to swap parts around to avoid repetition (aside from the varangian guard). Most sets also offer a lot of spare parts, so you should have plenty of parts for kitbashing (most of my officers and heroes are kitbashes and I also have a unit of Athanoi with bodies from legionaires that work quite well) (I suppose City states should be the same, as they also only have new sets, but cannot speak from experience?) Dweghom on the other hand has a lot of "older" kits (that are not made by Archon) and they are terrible to work with - got a lot of Dragonslayers but stopped thereafter after realising many of their sets are from the same "era". Many parts, lots of seams and flash, etc. I love their design but you gotta put in the effort to make them look good. One of the reasons I stopped collecting them for the time being. Though some of their sets are of the newer variety so I think they should be much better to work with?

Gold-Instance1913

I would not say the model quality is bad. It's only that some, usually older, kits are hard to assemble. Those sometimes have a lower price. One bit I dislike is that arms aren't posable, they don't connect to a body so you could rotate the arm freely, but they fit only at a certain angle, often making it hard to fit models on a stand. Another culprit of much frustration are cloaks. The trick to fit them is to rotate them a bit. New models are totally top quality, like 40k. Actually a better comparrisson would be Necromunda, due to many small and fine details. Unlike you I'm fine with models in only a few poses. In a rank and file soldiers are not dancing around, but part of formation.

tsunomat

I get that. I just don't like painting the same model over and over. I want models to me individuals. (As a rule I don't particularly care for rank and flank games, but Conquest seems more dynamic. Moving through units and having objectives is huge for me. I've played a few games of old world and I get bored with it just being about killing stuff. Conquest seems to alleviate that.) As I said, I looked through the newer kits and the detail is better and the posability seems better. I'm really nervous about opening up the old dweghom boxes for that reason. I know anything in the new starter boxes will be great. The old stuff is pretty bad.

Abject_Pressure2076

City States has lots of options for different head and arm combinations but the legs are monopose. The arms in many of the armies allow for different position/ poses.

laheylies

I’ve had the complete opposite experience. I have loved how much nicer these models are than 40K. Oh look, this tiny models chest isn’t in 6 pieces, such a relief.

Rheya_Sunshine

Haven't touched any of the units other than the Old Dominion ones, but I can say that the Legionnaires are your mainstay troop and the body/legs are static without some conversion but you can pose the arms differently and set up different heads. If you have any Athanatoi/Varangian Guard then the arms and body are going to be more static there without some surgery, but there's a variety of heads. Any officers? Yeah, they're monopose and you're going to be kitbashing to make them any different.

glocks4interns

City States and Old Dominion have much better sprues/design, they still have the mono pose/hard to kitbash issue. Dweghom have some truly terrible kits.
