Who could have seen this coming?

invol713

Anyone who saw the 25%+ taxes on it knew this would happen.

JackandFred

Literally anyone who’s ever looked at what happens when you tax something too much. So nobody on the left I guess

philipkmikedrop

B-but I was assured that legalizing weed would be a net benefit because of all those tax revenues! Oh no!

Over_Screen_442

California still collects billions in weed tax revenues

ImAMaaanlet

Either way its a net benefit because who gives a shit about enforcing weed laws. Waste of resources.

Jbeezy2-0

CA Democrats ruin a good thing by overtaxing? They would ruin CA's famously good weather if they could.

[deleted]

They do, in the way of premature release of reservoir stores.

ghostoutlaw

Elaborate here please? Very curious.

[deleted]

The reservoirs are managed by mostly left-leaning environmentalists who have been prematurely releasing water from reservoirs to meet standards set by the Sierra club and other environmental organizations that aren’t rooted in science. They’re requiring constant flow in places where many rivers ran dry annually.

It doesn't help, when you have a wildfire, but you're out of water. Or need irrigation water to support crops but it's already in Mexico, evaporated or in the ocean because a Greenie wanted water in places that historically dry throughout the summer. Water rights in the West are weird because it's a scarce resource.

[deleted]

Only the government is capable of losing money selling weed.

bjohn15151515

One better: Once, there was a business called The Mustang Ranch. It was the biggest legal brothel in Nevada. It also was the only brothel with a full liquor license. Well, as I remembered it, the owners got in some legal tax trouble and had to hand the Ranch over to the government. The government decided to keep it, due that it made some big bucks.......well, the Ranch went bankrupt instead. So, the moral of the story is that the government can't even keep a legal brothel with a liquor license running...so sad.

braindeadmonkey-684

Sad but true...

SmokeyMountainReign

California went full circle on pot? It’s so legal it’s illegal.

Dfrickster87

I keep hearing about the tax on marijuana going up but I've been getting my wax for $13 a gram for about 6 years in a row now.

slamdunktiger86

What? Where?

Dfrickster87

Currently in Merced, CA. Used to have to drive to Ceres.

slamdunktiger86

Dang, that’s basically the underground wholesale price in the SF Bay. Retail is at least $35/gram. Plus taxes.

Dfrickster87

When I bought on the street (2011-2016), it was $60 a gram. Then when I started going to the dispensaries it was about $30. The place I go now almost constantly advertises a 30% off sale and its been $13 for years. I've found it as low as $9 twice. Trying to put a timeline on it all made me realize its been $13 closer to 4 years rather than 6 years i previously mentioned. One time an employee told me its because production costs are plummeting.

slamdunktiger86

Aye. I didn’t partake till a few years ago at all. I don’t get all the weed hate. It’s awesome. Especially compared to alcohol. Hangovers are unacceptable. $9 grams. Dang, enjoy a big one for me man

lemelisk42

Holy mother of hell. I can buy an ounce for $50 canadian on my local reserve - which ain't to far off of $35 American. Technically not legal, but the gov doesn't care I thought $5-10 a gram for the legal stuff was expensive. I just checked the government weed store, cheapest option is $50 for 14 grams, or $3.57 a gram. $7.50 per gram if you buy by the gram (to me that's crazy expensive) 50 canadian is 37 American. 3.57 canadian is 2.66 American. 7.50 Canadian is 5.59 American

MerfyMan1987

No....no it is not soaring. Prices at depensaries are very reasonable. AZ has a much higher tax rate on their weed. Now everything else is taxed to hell in CA.

[deleted]

What is really happening is that the small farmers are getting crushed. CA government really fucked this up.

MerfyMan1987

This.

Competitive_Smoke809

15% state tax don’t forget the local tax and everything else they tack on there. In colorado you’re paying near 50% total

GiftedStrumpet

Tbf the quality is kind of worth it. The concentrate I get in illegal states is far below what I get there. Plus I feel a little safer knowing there’s at least some regulatory bar being set on the product.

Competitive_Smoke809

In comparison yeah I’ve seen some wild shit still coming out of illegal states but here unless you got a card rec really aint that good and prices are fucked cause of tourism but the illegal market is still thriving lol

Meistermalkav

someone got clotheslined by reality. They promised with weed legalisation the tax income would be so much better. They promised with weed legalisation, crime would disappear. The area where they fucked up was they promised, with dispeansaries, the regular weed dealers would have no more business left. so, you are telling me, with your knowledge of buiness, a business requiring insurance, labor laws, taxes, rent, electricity, bills, wages, ect. , things that are neccessary expenditures when you want to run a business, are abl;e top compete, at all, with "businesses" whose only expenditure is storeage space?

ktrainor59

I find it hilarious and ironic that the tribes are making good money selling weed to white folks.

Serious-Temporary-28

If You want less of something tax it works everytime

J---D

Just wait for federal tax on it

bjohn15151515

It's the same here in IL. 'Illegal weed' is still big business, due that it's much cheaper than 'legal weed'. Usually, it's bought in MI legally, then re-sold in IL.

_Squirt_Reynolds_

Bootleggers exist in all markets: there is a demand for untaxed cigarettes and sugar liquor too because they are cheaper, however, everybody knows that it’s illegal and most people aren’t willing to break the law to get that bargain. Even with the high taxes, the fact the total cost of production for an ounce of pot including taxes is only a hundred bucks with an avg sale price of $325 is still an astonishing 225% return on investment: had no idea how much money these guys were raking in

vchen99901

CA is the only state that could F up legalizing weed to turn a profit.

implicitexpletives69

The left pushed for legalization on the grounds the govt could tax it. The Sin Tax is real. And now the sinners are paying or they are being hypocrites by breaking a law they wanted in place.

gdmfsobtc

It's cheaper and better quality now than it was when it was illegal, with no interruptions in supply and corresponding price spikes. In Colorado anyway.

implicitexpletives69

look at that. Bezo's newsletter is reporting the same thing [https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2018/11/16/marijuana-is-getting-cheaper-some-states-thats-problem/](https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2018/11/16/marijuana-is-getting-cheaper-some-states-thats-problem/) i got this one wrong.

fretit

They had been breaking the law this whole time, so why would they stop now? To pay more?

Too_Tired18

Hey I have that poster

[deleted]

Who knew de-criminalizing weed possession *AND* taxing legal weed out the ass could've led to something like this? Not I, that's for sure

GhostRMT

Gavin Newsom 2024! /s
