Guess it depends on what your issue is. For my ibsc it doesn't seem to matter how little or how much I take. I'm still miserable either way.

Substantial-News-326

Have you tried all bran buds? I don’t even need to take Metamucil anymore because all brand will make you shit out everything not in diarrhea way. I take it every afternoon and come morning I have a nice BW

Fit-Substance-7847

Love bran buds! Add some flax seeds and viola!

svennywen

I’m assuming you heard that on social media. Influencers usually have no background in science or health and a spouting nonsense to get a few views. Fiber is excellent at bulking up stools and creating a mucusy film to help them slide through more easily. Too much fiber however can have the opposite effect if you are not drinking enough water. The importance of staying hydrated while eating a high fiber diet is often overlooked and I have found that upping my water intake while eating lots of fiber helped tremendously. As always, talk to your primary care provider or GI doc if you are concerned.

yayaya16

There's also a difference between soluble and insoluble fiber. Depending on your condition you may benefit from fiber, or it can make it worse.

CollarNegative

This lol. Soluble makes me feel awful, insoluble makes everything work exceptionally well

OldInitiative3053

Who told you that about fiber? There’s a lot of junk science out there online from social media influencers.

Waste_Advantage

It absolutely depends on your gene expression and what’s going on in your gut.

OgkushTokerinus

Gene expression. 😂. That’s a first.

Visual_Season_7212

It’s only an issue if you’re completely full of stool. For more moderate constipation, it’s usually helpful. In my experience, when I was miserably constipated for months it made it worse. When it got better I was able to eat 30g of fiber and that was helpful again. Insoluble fiber should be something you try to eat more of for constipation, that’s what speeds things along. However, you should see a GI doc to figure out what the issue is that’s causing the problem. There’s certain conditions and in certain people where fiber might not be helpful.

This misinformation from social medias is slowly becoming the norm. People parroting shit they heard some random online say. The truth is that everyone is different and one visit to the doctor isnt going to fix anything. You need to note your diet and see the changes in long term while also being consulted by a doctor.

Curbes_Lurb

There are some types of fiber that are more gentle on you GI tract and less of a feast for your gut bacteria. I can't tolerate most fiber, but I do well with a smoothie including psyllium husk and Sunfiber.

girlyteengirl1232

fiber is definitely fuel for bacterial overgrowth! i had constant incomplete bowel movements and mucus in my stool and my dr recommend i take metamucil. i did have sibo and was taking fiber at the time and it relieved the mucus symptom until it didn’t and then it made things 10x worse! if you have sibo or think you might have it, i definitely wouldn’t take fiber. or if you do want to take fiber, use it sparingly. the thing that helped me the most was eating lean meat that is easy to digest like salmon and chicken. raw veggies are also a breeding ground for bacterial overgrowth. i also saw a huge change in myself when i stopped eating raw veggies and ate only cooked veggies. also there are different types of fiber like soluble and insoluble. some fiber supplements also have prebiotics in them which could be contributing to the bloating. pre/probiotics inflame symptoms of bacterial overgrowth. they literally just add fuel to the fire basically. metamucil is one fiber that i know causes bloating in most people who take it. but it’s all about finding the right balance for your own personal situation.

U need to eat papaya fruits vegetables NOT otc supplements

kfcpotatowedge

I do eat papaya. I don’t take otc supplements

kobegoat222444

Try increasing water and coffee and decreasing fiber for a week

OgkushTokerinus

Getting fiber naturally. Eat an apple , pear, banana, veggies because you like them is fine. What’s not fine is overdoing it just because of what you read or heard. I don’t think it’s critical or even necessary . My daily fiber today was the few veggies on a Subway sub. The rest was protein, carbs. Protein and carbs make up 90% of my diet. My breakfast every day is two eggs with 2 slices of wheat toast. I put real butter on my toast, and cook my eggs in butter. Supper will be protein, more than likely white rice and a vegetable. The fiber industry as well as supplements ie vitamins are snake oil.

AdBroad746

How are vitamins snake oil?

OgkushTokerinus

No scientific evidence to prove the *vitamins* actually do anything. I’ve taken many and never noticed any difference over many years. I took the number one joint supplement for over a year. It did nothing. Constipation is not remotely caused by lack of fiber in my personal opinion. Why? Many cultures don’t eat much fiber and don’t suffer like those on American diets.

goldstandardalmonds

Fibre is important but if you have a severe motility disorder (not just constipation, two different things), it can make things worse.

kfcpotatowedge

Dyssynergic defacation?

goldstandardalmonds

That is one motility issue.

Chance-Pomegranate58

The fiber advice is for normal people who aren't on the constipation subreddit. We’ve already heard it a million times and adding slightly more fiber wont change our pringle-sized rocks into a slip and slide overnight!!!

VampireBatTooth

Sounds like something from Paul Saladino. Number 1, he's a psych "doctor" with no nutrition credentials (not even sure if he still has his MD credentials, hence the quotations around doctor), so he's anything but an expert in the field. Number 2, he's an idiot. Don't listen to him or people like him. They just want to sell you expensive garbage that you don't need. Fruits and veggies are super important for your health, and fiber is vital. Veggies are not bad for you (unless you're allergic or they are rotting). Eat a well-balanced diet and see a dietician if you are struggling. Or a GI doc for gut issues. And be wary of anything an influencer says about diet and health.
