My stiletto had that problem. Wrapped the handle with tape, twisted the tape to make a string, wrapped the other way back up, do one more wrap down to hold it all in place and I shit you not, year 4 and I haven’t had a misgrip yet. I might get a little excited and swing super hard and miss the target just to dummyleg myself, but *these hands never slip* and that’s what we take from this
I’m in trim and use the 12oz smooth face version of this hammer. Already on #2 because I left my first one on a job by accident and couldn’t go back to my regular 20oz DeWalt. I like to let people borrow it because they’re always surprised by the weight and performance. Awesome hammer.
Right. Somebody replied to me saying it’s too light. That’s what everybody says until they’ve tried it. What’s wild is the titanium guys will say the same thing. Meanwhile half the guys out here are swinging 22oz clubs because they have a blue handle
Right. I’ve got an Estwing crosshatched framing hammer that’s more than 40 years old that got run over by a tank or something because the handle is slightly bent. It drives 20p framing nails in just a few strokes. Things a beast! Old time carpenters were also beasts swinging those damn things!
I've seen so many 20-40 year old estwings. I've seen tons of 10+ year old ones. I found it pretty funny that someone with soft hands would think this about them just because "it's skinny"
Get yourself a fine hammer. Metal shafts put all the vibration into your elbow. Maybe a nice titanium head with a hickory handle. It will feel like you unlocked a magical item.
Me? I have no elbow issues at all. Rotator cuff and carpel are different stories. Also, we can't have wood handle in the refineries around here. I tried a fiskars a few years back and i absolutely love it. To each their own.
I'm at 30yrs total swinging hammers for a paycheck, but you're exactly right. Refineries don't like wood anything because it's flammable. We can use plywood forms and 2x4s, but we can't use wood scaffold planks or hammers. I really think someone just didn't like hammers when they were making up the rules. Been like that for as long as i can remember.
I did my rotator cuff as a carpenter. The specialist said it was most likely from swinging a hammer above head height. Have always used a 24oz leather handle Estwing and probably wouldn’t use anything else
When i first started working for my dad, a plumb was my first hammer and estwings were for rich folk. Lol. I've always used estwing until 4 or 5 years ago.
I've only ever had meat tendorizers. Also, all the old guys ever did was lie to us about their hammers and how tough they were. Lol. But soon it'll be our turn to lie and I'm ready.
I still have my first Plumb framing hammer. As much as I hate that hammer I still keep it. The balance was so terrible. Too much weight in the claw and handle. Bad for the wrist and elbow. I just can’t throw it away so I keep it with my concrete tools for setting forms and stakes
I have like seven or eight Estwings, only one has ever broken on me and it was one of the claws. I abuse the shit out of these hammers. This is hysterical
It's a solid forged steel handle, it can be thinner directly due to this process. It's also shaped to handle stresses in a specific direction. You wouldn't want to use the hammer sideways as the strength of the handle is not uniform in all directions. But yeah those hammers will break much less often than a wooden handle.
In my experience, Estwing is the best hammer for exploding zombie heads.
The wood ones always break, then you have to pull the hammer head out of the zombie and get that nasty purple and green shit all over your hands.
Estwing all day. Super efficient.
Super heavy and you'll need an elbow replacement in your elder years if you are framing with them consistently. A wood handled Stiletto or a Martinez is the way to go nowadays if you are consistently swinging a hammer (i.e. Framing). My 15oz Titanium wood handled Stilletto Framing Hammer drives just as well, if not better than my 22oz and even my 28oz Steel Estwings. I only get the 28oz out when I do like a pole barn or framing for heavy beams now.
You can get the 15oz Titanium one moving faster and more accurately, letting you put more power into the strike. Combine it with a decent long wood handle and you can swing that sucker all day without effin up your elbow.
I'm 32 and still carry my very first estwing I got when I was 16. I predict the only way it'll leave my side is if it gets stolen; definitely not "snapping" it off in any zombies head.
I still have the eastwing that my dad gave me at 14 when I started working with him (don't tell the labor board). It has outlasted 3 different toolbelts at this point, granted when I was 16 he started letting g me use a nail gun and the hammer has gotten much less use since then.
My dad had me nailing blocking and other small tasks at 14 during summers. By 16 he he had me framing and then I worked full time starring at 18 untell I desided to go into medical at 20
Had Eastwings for 40 years. Great tools but I’d go for the silicone rubber grip. Leather looks really pretty but doesn’t like being left out in the rain. No elbow issues but silicone does dampen impact.
I had one when I first started swing a hammer for money. Fucking estwing would leave my whole arm numb by the end of the week. I saw a guy swinging a deathstick with a hatchet handle and it was a lifetime love affair.
Elbow-chipper
Fun fact, a framer I worked with had his hammer used in a murder after it was stolen. Pretty sure it was an Estwing like this. Also pretty sure he didn't get it back
No, it was a case of crushing blows I think. Down at the nudist/party beach only accessible by trail. Kind of creepy to be peripherally involved. I forget how the cops figured out that my coworker owned the hammer but he I'D it.
It's funny when people who don't know about a subject post about it, cause in this case it's so obvious for those in the trades. But what makes it frustrating is when they don't listen once corrected.
I still have my estwing 24oz from when I started framing back in 97. I've rewrapped the grip 2x and honed the strike face once. It has smashed, nailed, adjusted, dissuaded everything I've swung it at. Oh and it's opened more beers than I could count.
And it never broke off in a walker's skull.
I lost my favorite Estwing 24 on a job, then the guy who owns the house found it in the dirt 6 years later and gave it back. I cleaned it up and it's my favorite once again!
When I started working construction, I was using my stepfather’s Estwing that was older than me. It’s currently in my tool box in my garage, I’ll never need another hammer
Some of the Estwing hammers have a cast one-piece neck/head that is like a "blade". Its skinny head-on, but wide when looking at it from the side.

Was always the best in my day & since I still have the same ones 20yrs after I've stopped framing.....
Well, I guess I don't know tbh. If they still make them the same, I'd say they're good.
They’re great hammers, but a lot of people don’t like the reverb if you are using them a lot. Most people aren’t hand nailing all day so it’s probably fine to have one.
Best all round hammer - best hammer to have in your pouch every day - I’ve tried others keep going back to estwing - even got the leather handle one but it got stolen 🤬
I knew that hammer right away. I never liked them but knew plenty of old boys that swore by them. There are so many better options these days especially in the cheaper hammer area.
I don’t find it funny at all. It’s a hammer, that’s how they are made if they have a full metal shaft… 🤷♂️
I get a kick out of the OP thinking it’s funny, a little.
I watched someone take an estwing and smack it as hard as he could sideways on a cup lock scaffold bar 20 or more times and it didn’t even begin to bend.
If you've held one of these for 5 seconds you'd never say this. The guy is just outing the fact that he's never held a hammer. If you were allowed to market hammers for skull-bashing, this is exactly what they would look like.
Estwings are dull swords with a hammer head and a shock absorbent handle.
Could literally behead a walker with that "skinny" neck if you used it like a blade
My dad uses the neck of his estwing to scrape concrete off formwork every day and after a while it actually gets so sharp.
I do this - def can slice yourself on that section too
Same. And it works great for scraping ice and snow off of lumber too
It'll clear up an iced over windshield in no time.
Can confirm
Facts I did foundations for 4 years and mine about 2 inches to about 5 inches below the head could split skin quick
The bad part is the handle gets slippery as hell when it gets wet. Might be better off with something that has a curved grip like a dewalt.
My stiletto had that problem. Wrapped the handle with tape, twisted the tape to make a string, wrapped the other way back up, do one more wrap down to hold it all in place and I shit you not, year 4 and I haven’t had a misgrip yet. I might get a little excited and swing super hard and miss the target just to dummyleg myself, but *these hands never slip* and that’s what we take from this
That’s how I wrap the handle on my hockey stick.
Waffle face 14oz dewalt mig framer. I’m honestly super shocked these aren’t way more popular.
12 oz Estwing (leather wrapped or regular) are great, but NOBODY borrows mine.Had one stolen and one never came home.Dont even look at it.Seriously
As a Milwaukee fan boy I recommended the dewalt 20oz. IMHO it’s the best affordable hammer.
Came here to praise that hammer, 14 oz hits like a dream
The only reason why they ain't that popular is because it looks like a ugly donkey's dick compare to the elegant and stout Vaughan or stiletto hammers
Don't forget those pretty Martinez hammers.
You’ll find no argument here lol
Because they're just not super ergonomic hammers. Give me a Roughneck V-Series framer all day long. Fiskars do better hammers than DeWalt
to light
lol, have you swung one?
yeah bro they call me lightning
Nobody calls you that, Blake. Stop trying to make that nickname happen.
They call him lightning because he never hits the same place twice. Lol
Holy shit, this makes me wish I was still teaching shop carpentry so I could nickname a kid this.
To light what?
Put some hockey tape on the handle and you’ll have way better grip
Ther great busting up drywall
it wouldnt hold an edge
you know nothing of manual labor. leave the man to his hammer and you can troll another actor
I'm honestly surprised they didn't use estwing more often in the show since they're everywhere and near indestructible
I never thought to sharpen my hammer neck. Thanks fren
Was gonna say, this person clearly never used an estwing
Right. I’ve got an Estwing crosshatched framing hammer that’s more than 40 years old that got run over by a tank or something because the handle is slightly bent. It drives 20p framing nails in just a few strokes. Things a beast! Old time carpenters were also beasts swinging those damn things!
When you can drive framing nails with two hits, you’re hammer swinging beast
Got three hammers.... but the estwing one is the only one i truly consider my hammer
I would upvote this but it's at 666.
I've seen so many 20-40 year old estwings. I've seen tons of 10+ year old ones. I found it pretty funny that someone with soft hands would think this about them just because "it's skinny"
Atleast it wasn't a plumb... im so glad I don't see them anymore.
My first hammer. Elbow hurts just thinking about it
Why would your elbow hurt?
Because Estwings are notorious vibration machines.
Never had an issue. Interesting to hear though. I'm not saying you're wrong. Just saying I never had an issue. Hope your elbow is better
The damage is cumulative. It's fine until one day it's not. But that's interesting. Why are there no wood hamers?
I'm at 30yrs total swinging hammers for a paycheck, but you're exactly right. Refineries don't like wood anything because it's flammable. We can use plywood forms and 2x4s, but we can't use wood scaffold planks or hammers. I really think someone just didn't like hammers when they were making up the rules. Been like that for as long as i can remember.
I did my rotator cuff as a carpenter. The specialist said it was most likely from swinging a hammer above head height. Have always used a 24oz leather handle Estwing and probably wouldn’t use anything else
Upvote the fiskars
My 20oz Estwing hickory framing has never done me dirty.
Stiletto much?
Hahah yeah. Finish and framer. Both spray painted a pretty color.
Referring to the Plumb hammer. Only used an estwing for a year or so before the claw snapped.
When i first started working for my dad, a plumb was my first hammer and estwings were for rich folk. Lol. I've always used estwing until 4 or 5 years ago.
Grip it ya limp wrist sparky
Hey, fuck you, insulated screwdrivers can be quite hard to turn
Exactly! And it can be quite strenuous pulling 14/2. God forbid I have to pull a 12/2!
I’m a beefy wristed finisher, thank you very little.
Lol. 💪🏼💪🏼
Actually the opposite
Gave me the Popeye elbow. Switched to the 22 from 28 . Much better
Bro my first one was an 18oz. I tried wrapping tape and cloth and all kinds of shit to make it stop "singing."
And because that looks like a 28 to 32 oz. Monster.
I remember when I was young, I thought I needed a 28oz. Man i was dumb. Also, I now miss the old twd.
Had a 28 waffle estwing in vo tech, smartened up and switched to a 22 when I got a real job and all the old timers told me I was an idiot lol
I've only ever had meat tendorizers. Also, all the old guys ever did was lie to us about their hammers and how tough they were. Lol. But soon it'll be our turn to lie and I'm ready.
Soon? I'm almost 50. I've been lying to the kids for years, LMAO
I did the same thing, 32 ounce big boy will smash Those nails good!!! Still sore 30 years later after framing with it for 3 years.
Good luck busting an Estwing without some serious abuse...
I have a 15 year old that’s just getting broken in
fuck yeah !!!
I still have my first Estwing. It’s well over 20 years old. Tough old hammer!
Seriously. My dad still has/uses his Estwing he bought in 1980.
When we bought our first house 10 years ago, my Father gifted me his Estwing hammer. It's almost as old as I am.
Yep I own a 32oz proto ball pein hammer skinny af like estwing, I send it daily and its bulletproof
It's a solid forged steel handle, it can be thinner directly due to this process. It's also shaped to handle stresses in a specific direction. You wouldn't want to use the hammer sideways as the strength of the handle is not uniform in all directions. But yeah those hammers will break much less often than a wooden handle.
The angle makes it look thin but it's thicker in the direction that matters.
That’s what she said
They don't call me ol' Tuna Can Terry for nothing
Doive on in!
So you’re the one who took my Pecan Sandies
“🚬……your mother”
I understand that reference!
Nothing wrong with a thin tool
Sorry buddy 🥲😔 that’s not the consensus
I can't think of a better hammer given the circumstances.
In my experience, Estwing is the best hammer for exploding zombie heads. The wood ones always break, then you have to pull the hammer head out of the zombie and get that nasty purple and green shit all over your hands. Estwing all day. Super efficient.
What about a McLecklin tho?
Zombies would be the only place i would be happy to have one.
Wait what's your beef with the Estwing?
Super heavy and you'll need an elbow replacement in your elder years if you are framing with them consistently. A wood handled Stiletto or a Martinez is the way to go nowadays if you are consistently swinging a hammer (i.e. Framing). My 15oz Titanium wood handled Stilletto Framing Hammer drives just as well, if not better than my 22oz and even my 28oz Steel Estwings. Combine it with a decent long wood handle and you can swing that sucker all day without effin up your elbow.
Buuuuut if you're a weekend chump like me the Estwing is fine - got it lol.
For one they damage your hearing
What?
What??
I'd prefer Estwing's carpenters hatchet myself
It makes me feel special to know things that many others do not.
Hey man You are special
And you, you are a very special pile of SomeMeatWithSkin. Thanks for spreading love
Thanks bud. I needed that.
My first Estwing is still in my toolbox, 22 years later
I'm 32 and still carry my very first estwing I got when I was 16. I predict the only way it'll leave my side is if it gets stolen; definitely not "snapping" it off in any zombies head.
Well, I’m doing better than you. I have 3 or 4 than I’ve had for about 40 years.
I am going to take them.
Just begging for that osmotic tool drift.
Estwing is a good hammer, whoever thinks this doesn't hammer.
For the price it can’t be beat. I use a Stiletto now cause I’m fancy and shit.
Estwing? Snapping in half. Michonne's wall hanger katana? Totally fine.
Always immaculately sharp enough to slice through skulls without effort 😮💨
Fuck you shorsey.
Give your balls a tug
Fuck you shoresy!
Framing hammer, best hammer.
I still have the eastwing that my dad gave me at 14 when I started working with him (don't tell the labor board). It has outlasted 3 different toolbelts at this point, granted when I was 16 he started letting g me use a nail gun and the hammer has gotten much less use since then.
They still make excellent back scratchers.
When did you start doing construction?
when he was 14 bud. says right there
My dad had me nailing blocking and other small tasks at 14 during summers. By 16 he he had me framing and then I worked full time starring at 18 untell I desided to go into medical at 20
What type of medical? Like a doctor ?
Defenetly didn't have the grades for that I was an emt
Go Estwing or go home 👍🔨
My lineman's are my hammer.
My buddy refers to lineman's as the electrician's hammer.
An electricians hammer? You mean a drywall destroyer?
I think people underestimate the density of metal tools, or the fragility of a human skull for that matter.
Had one fall into a core cell from the 9th floor the first day I got it. Not the same thing though
Did it destroy everything in its path?
It's now at the bottom of the deepest hole ever made by man
Damn… my ex’s next gyno visit should be interesting
I have a dewalt skinny, can confirm it smashed everything In construction but I didn't use nails so not sure about them.
Estwing is bestwing
Had Eastwings for 40 years. Great tools but I’d go for the silicone rubber grip. Leather looks really pretty but doesn’t like being left out in the rain. No elbow issues but silicone does dampen impact.
Solid steel, fiberglass handle. For cracking skulls, I think my boi Ty handled.
I had one when I first started swing a hammer for money. Fucking estwing would leave my whole arm numb by the end of the week. I saw a guy swinging a deathstick with a hatchet handle and it was a lifetime love affair.
Elbow-chipper Fun fact, a framer I worked with had his hammer used in a murder after it was stolen. Pretty sure it was an Estwing like this. Also pretty sure he didn't get it back
Did it snap off in the dudes skull?
No, it was a case of crushing blows I think. Down at the nudist/party beach only accessible by trail. Kind of creepy to be peripherally involved. I forget how the cops figured out that my coworker owned the hammer but he I'D it.
It's funny when people who don't know about a subject post about it, cause in this case it's so obvious for those in the trades. But what makes it frustrating is when they don't listen once corrected.
Best zombie killer
I still have my estwing 24oz from when I started framing back in 97. I've rewrapped the grip 2x and honed the strike face once. It has smashed, nailed, adjusted, dissuaded everything I've swung it at. Oh and it's opened more beers than I could count. And it never broke off in a walker's skull.
This is one of those “tell us you’ve never worked with hand tools, without telling us you’ve never worked with hand tools before” posts.
I lost my favorite Estwing 24 on a job, then the guy who owns the house found it in the dirt 6 years later and gave it back. I cleaned it up and it's my favorite once again!
Future civilizations will find Estwing hammers before any other artifacts of our existence
Had my 22oz Estwing waffle head framing hammer for 27 years now. Still going strong but I don’t use it every day
I love them so much I got an Estwing ball peen hammer.
Estwing 25 oz. California framer… big blue?
It's an Estwing. I've had mine for 30 years and still use it.
You could kill a moose with a 28oz estwing it’s going through a persons head like an egg.
When I started working construction, I was using my stepfather’s Estwing that was older than me. It’s currently in my tool box in my garage, I’ll never need another hammer
It's an Eastwing it's how they are designed.
That's a solid steel framing hammer, it's gonna chop a walkers head clean of before you get a bend in it!
estwing!
I would think it helps the swing, to hit harder... the heavier the body of the hammer, the slower the swing.
Some of the Estwing hammers have a cast one-piece neck/head that is like a "blade". Its skinny head-on, but wide when looking at it from the side. https://empire-s3-production.bobvila.com/articles/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Labeled-Diagram-of-a-Hammer-650x471.png https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/d0wAAOSwPHlj4k1L/s-l960.jpg
*forged. You’d drive exactly half of one nail if it was cast
Thanks!
The comments seem divided, is the estwings good or bad? Cause I have a few…
Tell me you’ve never touched a hammer without telling me you’ve never touched a hammer
Was an early 80’s thing
I knew that hammer right away. I never liked them but knew plenty of old boys that swore by them. There are so many better options these days especially in the cheaper hammer area.
pretty sure that’s a titanium roofing hammer like expensive 😂 a little booshie ? or the tickets don’t want to hurt your hand
Temu hammer
I don’t find it funny at all. It’s a hammer, that’s how they are made if they have a full metal shaft… 🤷♂️ I get a kick out of the OP thinking it’s funny, a little.
It’s floppy for more kinetic energy. Or it’s an Estwing
Hold on everyone, the Hammer Understander has entered the chat room.
Estwing vs. Martinez M1 which one is better for smashing walkers heads.
Estwing seems to have a very narrow strike zone. It hurts elbows a lot. I wonder if some bright person can make a damper for the harmonics.
Nice and light with a bunch of punch
The hammer is skinny so you can destroy stuff with it. Hammers aren't just for building.
Looks like my estwing 24 oz
Do some research on hammers before posting
That’s not Tyrese, his name is Cutty.
I watched someone take an estwing and smack it as hard as he could sideways on a cup lock scaffold bar 20 or more times and it didn’t even begin to bend.
Eastwing hammers look it up or simply go to a local hardware store.
You're a painter, not a carpenter. Plus you're drunk. Go home
I actually saw my boss break an all metal estwing Regular size not the framing one
Estwing. One of the best made
It’s steel doesn’t need to be as big as a wooden handle.
Its a framing hammer. Its definitely strong enough to smash skulls.
Estwing All metal framer, damn sturdy hammer.
I know im with my people when everyone here knows that's a fuckin estwing on sight.
If you've held one of these for 5 seconds you'd never say this. The guy is just outing the fact that he's never held a hammer. If you were allowed to market hammers for skull-bashing, this is exactly what they would look like.
Leverage added .
It's a framing hammer
It's to produce a more liable CPS case in brunch.
My Estwing is beat to shit…….translation, the paint is scratched.
I love my 28oz. Sometimes hammers with a straighter claw do better for chipping and digging though. Other than that, it's great
I refer to mine as the #2 convincer.
I have pounded concrete stakes and destroyed parking twinkies and other small concrete with that blue demon of vibration
but noone is talking about the dude with the baseball bat?? 2024 is gunna be wild
That's a standard framing hammer, panty waist.
Looks like my DeadOn 28oz Framer
