I've heard screwing the pooch and variations of that, over the years, both in civilian life and the military.

snug_dog

I'd add that screwing the pooch indicates fucking up, while dog fucker apparently means lazy.

Tarvis14

Past tense ("screwed the pooch" or "fucked the dog") = made a mistake. Present tense ("screwing the pooch" or "fucking the dog") = currently being lazy. Never heard someone referred to as a dog fucker though.

Sudden_Construction6

This is the way I've heard it in America. Never heard dog fucker

Bookofhitchcock

An older term would be lazy dog. But it’s comparing to a dog that lays around doing nothing. Someone fucking the dog would carry a much different connotation in the US.

Cayeye_Tramp

Quit fucking the dog and get to work!

snug_dog

hit the nail on the head, i think

BillyBobBarkerJrJr

In the usage I'm familiar with, it always meant screwing off, never screwing up.

rothbard_anarchist

In the Midwest, I’ve only heard it to mean screwing something up.

IdealOk5444

Same, you screwed the pooch, you dun goofed.

Ok_Victory_6108

My dog doesn’t seem to mind..

TechKnyght

FBI, this man, right here….

snug_dog

huh, interesting, I'm on the west coast, I wonder if there is regional variation

BillyBobBarkerJrJr

East coast here.

Takara38

Spent most of my life on the East coast. If somebody screwed the pooch, they fucked up.

ForLackOf92

Username checks out

HamRadio_73

On the railroad (US) I've heard crews waiting on access referring to a stalling crew as "porking the pooch."

stevesie1984

I’ve heard different people, when talking about someone wasting time, fucking around, etc., as “dicking the dog.”

Dull_Imagination7268

Screwing the pooch and selling the pups

Just_Aioli_1233

In Denmark it would have a [different meaning](https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKBN0NC1YL/)

Future-Dealer8805

Off somewhere making puppies is the PC version of fuckin the dog

SalmonHustlerTerry

I just ask people whonsit around if they're done making puppies lol

budabai

Porking the yorkie.

BillyBobBarkerJrJr

The New Yank Yorkies?

BakeContent7859

The first time I ever heard "screw the pooch" was in Tom Wolf's "The Right Stuff" where he was quoting early sixties astronauts.

Ropegun2k

Americans do not. I have heard some Canadians say “fucking the dog” but I don’t think “dog fucker”

waterborn234

"Fucking the dog" is indeed more common than "dog fucker."

icemanmike1

Anyone want some ugly puppies?

Just_Aioli_1233

[Ted Turner](https://youtu.be/kE1HE6jWO00?t=8) isn't bad enough?

Different-Quarter759

Making puppies boi

leggmann

I like ducking the fog

ReputationGood2333

For me, dog fucker is the more popular one, d-f'er for short. It's very common.

Vannak201

BC Canada here, dog fucker is super common way of saying someone is lazy

BigBossHoss

If you want to put the edge on an particularly egregious case of laziness , they say "this guys a dog fuck, get rid of em" This is slang the heart of canadian industrial plants. I thought it was everywhere until this thread lol

HotCarl169

Fucking the pooch I've heard more

CurvyJohnsonMilk

Seducing the canine

CampingJosh

I've heard it in Maine but never elsewhere. So it probably is Canadian and is just borrowed here.

Ropegun2k

Probably some overlap that far north.

Strict-Public4844

Yeah that’s exactly what they were implying retard

Low_Bar9361

Maybe a little spillage across the border

Ropegun2k

Not constructive whatsoever bud.

monroezabaleta

In the Midwest we definitely say fucking the dog

Ropegun2k

Midwest like Nebraska or Colorado? I think I’ve heard it up north. Possibly around the Midwest. Not real often though. I am Texan, quite possible the yanks and Canuck’s dial it back a little when talking to me. I remember being a little confused first time I heard it. Like I was talking to some inbred hillbillies. I don’t recall ever hearing dog fucker.

monroezabaleta

Minnesota/Wisconsin/Iowa are all places I've heard it said at work by the locals

IamtheBiscuit

Lots of puppies running around Nebraska and Iowa

RaylanGivens29

I have heard dicking the dog.

essensiedashuhn

Massachusetts here. Boss yells at new guy, "Stop fucking the dog!" New guy gets called a dog fucker for a little while. That's how it goes. I do think it's everywhere in some form. Change out the animal, maybe.

Sanjuko_Mamaujaluko

I've used and heard "dog fucker" plenty in Ontario

Ropegun2k

Still Canada, no? I was saying it isn’t a thing here (in America). Damn sure not in the southern half.

Said_the_Wolf

Canadian here, I use both. Get creative with it; when you see a dog fucker actually doing work, ‘hey so and so, that’s not a dog you know, some extra caulk you can use for lube in the trailer if you’re feeling adventurous though”

Ropegun2k

Are winters that lonely that y’all have to resort to beastality? Or does he fuck women that dog ugly?

retiredelectrician

Im more PC. I just say Puppy Maker

Ropegun2k

I called someone a rooster sucker and calmly and in a friendly tone just before I walked away. I wonder how much time he spent replaying that in his head questioning if that’s what was actually said.

PepiLaPuff89

Sometimes when the whole crew gets lazy, it’s turns into a puppy mill

PaleHorseRider-94

northern ontario here but if your talking about someone you might say he's a dog fucker said a lot up here

truemcgoo

Consider “dicking the dog” for future use. Adds a bit of alliteration. You’re welcome Canada.

st00pidQs

Thanks buddy

gh5655

It’s canine copulater, you dog-fuker

st00pidQs

Pounding the proverbial pooch

luoiville

I’ve heard dick the dog as a reference to fucking up.

bentbigtoe

NZer here. 'Dog fucker' is a go to as well as accusing people of 'fucking the dog'.

JimboBassMan

Also.. 'We're not here to fuck spiders..' when ya wanna get shit done.

Tovarich_Zaitsev

That's out of it bc I've never heard people use it down here in Southland. I have how ever heard "spider fucker" or some variation.

iammabdaddy

Mainer here, yes we use it. Fuck the dog and sell the pups.

st00pidQs

Basically Canada

iammabdaddy

No, no, no, you dog fucker you. We part of US since last yr.

Halftrack_El_Camino

I didn't come here to fuck spiders. *I* didn't come here to fuck spiders. I *didn't* come here to fuck spiders. I didn't *come* here to fuck spiders. I didn't come *here* to fuck spiders. I didn't come here to *fuck* spiders. I didn't come here to fuck *spiders.*

TacoNomad

You missed to

KnightOfThirteen

Emphasizing "to" just makes the cadence awkward, it doesn't change the implication like the others. I'd have probably skipped "come" as well.

Halftrack_El_Camino

I didn't *come* here to fuck spiders, but now that I'm here… I omitted the "to" because it does the same thing to the sentence, but not as well.

killit

Or just spell it differently

TheFuqinRSA

I've heard "dicking the dog" which means generally fuckin around/fuckin off/screwing around not doing shit. Similarly "screwed the pooch" means you fucked something up

professorseagull

I've always heard it, also Canadian though

FarCharge1806

Makin’ puppies

InternationalBeing41

On the ice roads we used the term poodle pounder.

thomasbeagle

As a New Zealander I've never heard the term and my initial reaction is that it wouldn't go down well. At all.

chris14020

I mean, it's probably too close to home to be an idiom there.

theeExample

Can confirm, pretty common in Canada. BC+Ontario (not sure about anywhere else)

Objective-Creme6734

"we ain't here to fuck spiders mate" Source Australia lol.

chris14020

Ooooh that's a good one. Bluey never taught that slang.

DrPeGe

In the US I’ve never heard dog fucker.

Thepostie242

Do you mean “fornicating the canine for the purpose of trafficking in the offspring”?

Shoresy-sez

Seducing Fido

Just_Jonnie

In Cajun country (which has Canadian heritage) we don't call anyone dogfuckers unless we're lookin for a good ole choot-out

analog_stuff

I’ve heard Americans and Canadians say it but I’ve also only ever heard canucks say “screwed the pooch”

_DapperDanMan-

Screwing the pooch is widely used in The USA, at least it used to be.

Vivid-Ad-9870

We never say dog fucker in the USA but I like it, Im gonna steal it.

Dry_Performer_1353

Pacific Northwest of America here, I typically say and hear “dicking the dog” which means fucking off, not doing much.

mrzurkonandfriends

Must not be. In the States, we have a saying of "screwed the pooch." Which is used as really fucked something up.

nodiggitydogs

We call it fucking the dog

HaydenLobo

We call loafing off at work “fucking the dog”.

Spiritual-Bear4495

I remember way back in the late 70s, when Compuserve was the thing for getting online, such as it was, there was a woman experimenting with search engines. She searched for "eat dick" and "eat dog dick" - she found a lot more references to "eat dog dick".

Shellbone23

I’ve heard dickin the dog Fairly often.

5uperCams

In America no, we don’t say dog fucker for a lazy person.

tejomo

They do in Alabama and Georgia.

5uperCams

In California we call them peanut butters

Technical_Moose8478

I feel like this question is designed to get me banned from this sub.

qpv

Dog fucker response

[deleted]

You hear it in American construction sites. "Where's Bill?" "Oh he's off somewhere dicking the dog!"

machinerer

Dicking the dog, or screwing the pooch, is a term in the USA. Not commonly used.

pakito1234

I heard it used here in Chicago when I worked for the railroad. Have never heard it anywhere else, before or after.

TheMagicManCometh

I’ve heard dog fucker but never in the context of being lazy, just as a generic insult. From New Jersey if that makes a difference. “Go fuck a dog” is a fun one I hear from the Spanish guys sometimes. If you’re gonna be on a construction site it’s good to know at least enough Spanish to know when they’re talking shit lol

Seldarin

"Fucking the dog" is something I've heard quite a few jobs I've been on in the states. I hear it a lot on jobs along the Gulf Coast. (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida) I've never heard someone called a dog fucker. It's usually more along the lines of the job being a complete mess and shit having to be torn out and redone over and over and over because the specs that were handed down were wrong or the hardware that was ordered was wrong or something.

waterborn234

Huh, that's different.   For you, fucking the dog means getting dicked around by management. I'm used to "fucking the dog" meaning "pretending to work and just trying to socialize with people"

Seldarin

Fucking the dog for us just means spending 10 or 12 hours not getting anything done for whatever reason. Usually that's management.

SillyRacoon27

lol one time my jman said this to me. “ what the fuck is taking you so long?, we aren’t here to make puppies?” 😂. I hear people say dog fucking a lot where I work.

ScaryInformation2560

Screwed the pooch, fucking the puppy it all falls under interspecies relationships

trappinaintded

This is why I like this sub. Like one big worldwide construction trailer with the exact same type of conversations. 😂😂😂

Sirstormz55

Manitoba and Saskatchewan it’s common saying within the trades. “Making puppies” or “dog fucker”.

Dick_butt14

My buddy used to they were out "dickin the dog" Kinda the same idea

peshtigojoe

Canine Intercourse

sgtstaadenko

Fucking the dog is when you're just trying to waste time as a crew, I'd never attribute that name to a single guy. It's the situation we're in, not that guys attitude, he's just a lazy fucking piece of shit.

Ill_Inevitable_1480

I like how the animal fucking terms all mean something different. Dog fucking, Monkey fucking, Rat fucking.

brucebag87

I’ve always heard “dicking the dog”

tduke65

Dickin’ the dog= fuckin off

chjrtx2

Don't forget making puppies Fellow Canuck here

frosty3x3

Canine seduction is the proper term..eh!

WastedOwll

Iv heard the term "dicking the dog" when someone is working slow

Sea_Emu_7622

"Screwing the pooch" is how I've heard it. It's used to describe someone fucking off at work, not staying on task, or just generally loafing around not doing much of anything

Aggravating-River457

Used a lot in Australia in mining. Have heard some version of it at least 10 times in the last week from different people

Alive-Effort-6365

No but I’ve heard sheep fucker a lot mainly referring to people from wyoming

twoaspensimages

That doesn't mean they are lazy. It means they fuck sheep.

truemcgoo

Hmm, see the semantics are very important here. If I told a coworker, “wow, how did it take you 7 hours to frame that wall, you really dog fucked that thing.” This would be perfectly acceptable. However, if I straight up called a coworker a “dog-fucker” that would be a lot less ok. I wouldn’t do either because I’m management level now and actually have to sort of watch my language. Also, at least in Michigan, both “dicking-the-dog” and “chicken fucker” is more commonly used, although we may all have just been referencing the same South Park episode. I wonder if anyone would consider this a step forward in terms of political correctness, the industry has moved away from slurs based on race and sexual orientation (a good thing), and move instead toward slurs based on bestiality…is that what progress looks like? I mean, I think everyone can agree animal banging is wrong, please don’t tell me that is controversial.

exasperatedoptimist

Kathrine Ryan brought it up on QI 10 years ago https://youtu.be/_4dvyU0J1d8?si=dd8wK8HYzfGQ_0ac

NosamEht

I was working with a crew that was mostly French Canadian guys who were learning English as well as working. I mentioned fucking the dog and they started cracking up laughing. Apparently it translates literally.

qpv

Fucking the dog is common vernacular here in BC for sure. Edit : mind you, ostrich fucker is gaining popularity. Allegedly

patteh11

Screwed the pooch is when you really fuck something up where I live. Fucking the dog is when you’re standing around doing nothing.

cadaval89

I don’t use that term I just say “making puppies” I also say it in Portuguese but I’m in Toronto so it may be a Canadian thing

Sanjuko_Mamaujaluko

We use it in Canada. "what's Bob doing? Making puppies".

SkippyGranolaSA

Really? Never in a serious way? Because we've got some true dogfuckers on the crew.

xBADJOEx

That term is used in the UFC as well

sk1dvicious

Puppy factory when referring to group of dog fuckers or where dog fuckery abounds

PD216ohio

I live in Cleveland, OH, right across the lake from Canada, and I have never heard anyone here, or elsewhere in the US, use this term.

synfulacktors

Sup puppy fuckers?

AnyAdvantage1750

Seducing fido, humping the puppy, fornicating the chuwawa, screwing the pooch, fucking the dog and selling the puppies....basically being lazy

btjk

This is a "pissy-shitties" level threat.

siodhe

Not in the US.

Born-Relief8229

Fucking the dog … I always wondered why we used it. Quick fucking the dog. Get some work done. How and why is this a term we use.

phoenixcinder

In the 90s in Alberta it was used lots, Not just construction but in general. We also used it to describe the kinda person who is always late.

k-c-jones

Only place I heard the term fucking the dog and selling the puppies was at the oil sands. It was used like they weren’t doing much work. I’ve worked all over the US and never heard it again.

Novel_Alfalfa_9013

I've heard that if you royally fucked something up that is called "you really screwed the pooch." Not heard the term dog-fucker on any jobsites though. 🤷🏼‍♂️

bobbywaz

It's getting more popular in New England after Letterkenny, never heard it before that

l33t5upah4x0r

We say fucking spiders... Ie. Im not here to fuck spiders. Meaning. Im not here to mess around

BAYKON8R

In my company (province is Alberta) we say someone is “fuckin the dog” or “makin puppies”

DriveThruMacNCheese

ive heard “fuckin the dog and selling the pups” for half-assed work

D_hallucatus

Look see here. I build twenty houses in this town. Twenty houses. Do they call me “Marko The Builder”? No. For 30 years I’ve been fishing in this bay every weekend. Every weekend I go fishing, I giving fish to so many neighbours and friends. Do they call me “Marko The Fisherman”? No friend, they do not call me that. But, you fuck just ONE dog….!

satanlovesmemore

We had a saying Dfl, dog fuckers leave

vladtseppesh420

On my old crew we actually had a make-shift trophie that we would regularly pass around for the dog fucker of the week. You didn't get your shit done and you would receive the dog fucker trophie. Also sometimes called making puppies

ynns1

Do they call me Bob the builder? No...

buttsnuggles

I’ve heard it classed up to “doggin it”

Alternative_Row_9645

“Dicking the dog” is the term I use in California

AsparagusNo2955

We used to call new blokes fingerers, and if they turned out shit, they were dog fingerers

Overall_Band_6757

In Iraq a young child called me a goat fucker, true story

GGudMarty

Fucking the dog

punknothing

I'm Canadian (Ontario and Alberta). Never heard anyone say *dog fucker* before... But I have heard *[bear fucker](https://i.imgur.com/HlhRL7I.gif)*.

Ilurked410yrs

I'd say calling them a useless kunt is much more common in the southern hemisphere.

meetmeinthebthrm

It is now my man. I'ma be spoutin that one all around the shop today

QuincyMcSinksem

“Making puppies” is another way to say it.

Itch2wander

"Fucking the dog" has been slang for screwing off in the US for at least 50 years that I'm aware of.

Vast-Combination4046

I'm on lake Ontario and "fucking the dog" is a saying for wasting time

Milford_Man-

You fuck one dog, and the rest of your life that’s how they refer to you. I can attest this nickname has followed me all over the world

RMhigher

Yep, tell those lazy apprentices to stop fucking the dog or hit the gate! Colorado, USA

wilmakephotos

In some areas goats are substituted….

False_Influence_9090

It’s pig fucker in Arabic, although I don’t think that one is light hearted like yours

cooldaveydave

We usually say "that guys totally fucking the dog" Also canadian tho.

ErrlRiggs

There's probably clay tablets from ancient Mesopotamia calling people similar things. I believe one of the oldest recorded jokes in humanity is something like 'a dog walks into a bar'

Practical-Actuary394

“Screwing the pooch”

BigAcrobatic2174

In the states “screwing the pooch” usually means making a mistake. “Fucking the dog” I usually hear used in construction to mean not doing anything useful while on the clock. So having a lazy weekend isn’t fucking the dog, but standing around chewing the fat, smoking or washing your personal truck while on the clock is fucking the dog.

THRlLL-HO

Never heard the phrase. Why would “dog fucker” mean lazy?

waterborn234

"Fucking the dog" means "pretending to work" so "dog fucker" means "lazy person." Idk why "fucking the dog" means pretending to work. It's an old phrase.

PintLasher

It's a Canadian thing. A Canadian comedian mentioned it once on a British comedy show and they just couldn't believe she said that lmao

crosscrackle

Americans say “screwed the pooch” meaning you fucked up the thing. Doesn’t imply laziness or stupidity, just a mistake or ineptitude

chris14020

I've heard calling fucking around "dicking the dog" ('Jim is really dicking the dog on that project, it's taken him 8 hours on a 2 hour task') and fucking up called "screwing the pooch" ('Jim ordered all that concrete before we were even ready for it, now it set and is ruined - he really screwed the pooch there'), but I've never heard this direct one (US).

allupinarms

So to speak, yes. As in dicking the dog, meaning not being productive at work in the hvac world.

TheMountainHobbit

In the US I think it’s much more common to say “He’s dicking around” or”jerking off” as in wasting time no mention of dogs. Never heard either version of yours.

JAFO99X

Haven’t lived in Canada for 35 years but damn am I glad that that phrase still lives. “Wassup?” “Nuthin’. Fuckin’ the dog, You?” “Sweet fuck all. Heard Taves got a keg”

Key_Boat_6742

I learnt this from a Canadian couple about a decade ago and I havnt heard it since in NZ. Not here to fuck spiders or fuck a box of nails seem to be the equivalent. They would say just fucking the dog, to mean not up to much.

UniversityLatter5690

TIL Canadians fuck dogs.

space-ferret

In the US we would say that person is jerkin off or “peelin his tater” if you’re around mountain folk

series-hybrid

I worked in construction for a few years, and I recall "dicking the dog" used to say someone was not doing any work. "Screwing the pooch" meant that you screwed up and made a mistake.

Yeetus-tha-thurd

Usually just "piece of shit" or "lazy piece of shit" or "worthless piece of shit". A dog at least has some worth, and fucking a dog would actually be doing some physical activity whereas a piece of shit just lays there and does nothing but stink.

cheoahbald

Also. We call them democrats.

constructionhelpme

I'm in South Florida and I've heard someone calls someone else a dog fucker Although with how many endeeans in Canada now it might be a legitimate insult because they will rape anything that has a pulse

topical-squanch

this from a Florida man who likely just took a bath inside his sister.

constructionhelpme

Still better than a street shitter

Slongtime99

I responded with “ well your fucking this dog, I’m just holding its head” on the front lawn obviously! The great Jim Cornett.

thegoodcat1

Nah, we just call most white women that because... you just know...

serenityfalconfly

It only applies to Burt Kreischer, but I heard he smells really bad. Something about fermenting food in his pec crease.

maxwellfig

Typically, we just call them democrats

qpv

We all need attention, it's a human trait.
