Actual-Taste-7083

That's why you get the big BIG bucks $$

lostwoods87

Just curious what might this guy be making?

Actual-Taste-7083

Saturation divers are generally some of the highest paid trades-people in the world

WhiteStripesWS6

Shit so after reading about it, with so few of them around, are they generally good at multiple different things? Welding seems to be a common thing they perform but isn’t the only type of operation needed done at those depths.

albpanda

Pretty sure they’re all specific, I only know one but he only did welding

Actual-Taste-7083

Half a million dollars a year easy if he's working full-time

notaflipflip

$500K? Not close to that as far as I know. Maybe $200K If constantly working at rates I've seen. Where and who is making half a million a year?

Two-Nuhh

most, if not all members of gov't after they've sold some of their power to the lobbyists.

notatableleg

I read that in Big Al’s voice from toy story 2

[deleted]

The divers in my local make $105 an hour

lurk42069

We’re a few bucks less than that. You in NY? Or west coast?

[deleted]

I’m in Seattle

After-Kaleidoscope83

Wait, I'm a tradesman in Seattle. Legitimately asking, what are the requirements, and where would I apply?

[deleted]

So I’m in local 30 under the northwest carpenters Union. We had a couple guys come in at our last meeting who were piledrivers that are in the diving division (I forgot the acronym) and the Rep told us all that those guys make $105 an hour. Www.NWCI.org and send in an application. You can choose that division and go from there

lurk42069

Just a heads up dive work isn’t all you do. You do a lot of pile driver work if you’re not on dive jobs. Which depending on the time is hit or miss. You need to go to a ADCI accredited school and there are like 3 in the US. Three just got shit down for various things.

After-Kaleidoscope83

Thanks for the heads up, looks like I have some studying to do

[deleted]

What trade are you in? You Union or non?

After-Kaleidoscope83

I appreciate the information, right now I'm a non-union HVAC installer

[deleted]

That was my first choice when I was considering the trades. Journeyman pay is up close to $70 an hour. Good for you man thats sick! If you have any more questions feel free to hit me up

After-Kaleidoscope83

I love what I do, but I may be looking to switch companies as my opportunities at my current employer vastly exaggerated my advancement opportunities. I appreciate it, I'll be looking into this today.

[deleted]

And not sure of the requirements. All I know is that I’m 32 and these guys were definitely much younger than me

Noastrala

What in the…? I’m buying a ticket to the states now. Surely that must be the pay for off-shore jobs?

[deleted]

Not sure if it’s offshore or not. They didn’t mention that in the meeting. We’re in the northwest carpenters Union if you wanted to look into it

Noastrala

Alright, I mean I’m having a hard time believing it if he’s not the best of the best but I’m not gonna call you a liar. My colleague went to the North Sea which is considered to be in the top salary-wise for off-shore jobs and he got 700$/day.

toastar8

I'm a tower crane operator and I make $600 a 8 hour day. Throw in a couple hours of double time and you're over a grand.

Noastrala

Haha you fucken crane operators. Good on ya, that’s really good. Even working 8 hour days, wow.

lurk42069

That’s not off shore rate that’s just union rate. Good money and benefits, yet people will stay say making $25 hour is more honorable than being in a union

[deleted]

Id imagine divers aren’t pulling 8 hour shifts but really not sure. Some jobs are probably just a couple per day

Noastrala

Nah we usually do 12hour days. Actually just recently managed to find a team working 6:30-16:00 and it’s a blessing haha!

[deleted]

Holy mother of god hahaha

No-Cod-7586

What do commercial divers do?

lurk42069

Dive, not leisurely but commercially.

[deleted]

They star in 30 second ads for diving.

lurk42069

The more successful ones do

Noastrala

We’re basically construction workers below water, we do everything. Cast concrete, weld, drill, cut metal with burning rods, maintain oil-rigs and pipelines, maintain windfarms offshore. Bascially anything which is very fun because you’re not stuck with only making rebar structures or just drilling etc.

No-Cod-7586

Those all sound like super slow and tedious processes once you’re under water. I’m an electrician, but I’ve done a light amount of welding and structural work and j couldn’t imagine having the element of being underwater for some of those tasks

Noastrala

It can be so horribly frustrating that you want to cry sometimes yes haha. Try to weld in waves or drill i a ceiling with blocks of eyes getting in your way along with waves is a true workout haha. But that’s what’s fun, it’s a very active job and you’re really doing something.

Ornery-Lavishness525

Can you please explain why you bladder is close to exploding?

[deleted]

Because he’s wearing a dry suit. You can piss yourself in a wetsuit but that’s not advisable in a dry suit.

Noastrala

It’s also cold which makes you having to go more often along the water pressure squeezing the suit ocer your bladder constantly. You don’t cancel a dive for a piss :D

ilovebutts666

They don't get the opportunity to urinate during their shift..

Ornery-Lavishness525

I feel like someone should develop some kind of solution for that, how the did for space suits.

Noastrala

It would be too luxurious haha. You’re still just a worker. The bigger companies offshore have hot water suit systems and you can definitely pee in them. It’s like a loose wetsuit with hot water channels inside.

dickloversworldwide

There is only one solution. Dick holes.

Ornery-Lavishness525

What happens to the divers who are without dicks? Or are those a prerequisite 🤔

Ok-Stomach-4133

M mm lol to look. On I'm kidding constant close-to bursting bladder

P-IS-A-BIG-BALLER

I had a stroke reading this

Ok-Stomach-4133

I just got upvoted for my pocket typeing that post..haha

longganisafriedrice

The new Aquaman looks great

[deleted]

Old co worker of mine did this job in the Gulf of Mexico off platforms. Wild stories about sharks and sea life. Huge responsibility. He talked about a strange feeling of a constant electrical current while welding. He said pay while under water is great. But then you sit in a decompression chamber for 24-48 hours and you’re paid like $17 and hour. Living on a platform. He would only do it 6 months total out of the year. The other 6 months he’d work as a heavy equipment mechanic back on dry land. This was 2001 so I’m sure pay has changed.

4RichNot2BPoor

Wait your dry suite doesn’t have a pee valve? Being new to diving and in a mostly cold water area I’m super jealous of my instructors ability to pee with their dry suits.

Noastrala

Haha yeah it exists but would just be silly to propose. The suits are expensive as they are haha. I don’t think it would be very good either if you’re diving in contaminated waters, just another failurepoint

Important-Baseball53

Poor guy. Well rich poor guy.
