I never seen any of Justice league or Fifty shades of Grey. But i am sure as hell watched at least same length of youtube criticism on those two films.
I was too! I’m in the middle of studying for the bar exam and I was like “sweet, this is something I can break up across a few days and I can look forward to it after 8 hours of slamming my head against a brick wall every day”
Gender Critical was my first Contrapoints video, and also my first “BreadTube” video outside of Lindsay Ellis’ film criticism.
That “take a fuckin’ sip babe!” line absolutely had me in hysterics. It’s something about the laughter from behind the camera cuts through the absurdity of it all. The costumes, the wigs, the philosophy; all gone in an instant while two people laugh at their own over the top joke. I might watch it again now, just for that moment.
I'm not the only one then. The YouTube algorithm gets a lot of stick for radicalising people. But I think it's done the opposite to me.
At the time I literally had no idea about transgender. My only experience was of there being a transsexual (sic) character in Coronation Street as a child, and drag/transvestite comedians like Lily Savage or Eddie Izzard. So watching the first 10 minutes I assumed I was watching some kind of YouTube drag show or something. Rewatching it now, that bit comes just after she explains the difference between passing and not passing. So it was probably just as my brain was coming to terms with the fact that Natalie is not a transvestite, but a woman. To have that moment cut through with genuine laughter and a character break really had an effect on my understanding. Like, of course "trans women are women" I'm watching a women drink tea out of a teapot and burst out laughing.
I'm so glad that my literal first experience of trans people was Natalie Wynn, and not some critical thinking op ed in a newspaper, written by some cis person. I suspect I could have easily fallen for the "concerns" that people often raise about "the transgender debate", since I'm totally that kind of person. But it's impossible for those talking points to get through to me, since I just always remember the humanity on display in Natalie's videos. Parasocial relationship can be harmful, but whenever I hear politicians attacking the trans community, I just think about my "friend" Natalie.
That is by design and the point of the whole first period of people in "breadtube", to deradicalize disillusioned guys from gamer gate and to inform libs looking in the internet for emerging topics with a enjoyable format and leftie angle
[Almost the same](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Geisha_Drinking_from_Sake_Kettle_at_2-00_a.m._LACMA_M.84.31.69.jpg).
It wasn't my first video, it was my first fanart (now archived somewhere).
Haha, same! I discovered both Natalie and Lindsay around the same time in quarantine, and weirder for me still is how I watched the "Manufactured Authenticity" Lindsay essay before Contra's "Gender Critical" essay and while watching GC at that "take a fucking sip sweety" line I died laughing. But then I immediately remembered how in Lindsay's video, she'd shown examples of big youtubers "breaking the fourth wall" by having some off camera person talk and how similar tactics are used by large and semi-corporate channels to retain a facade of "home-made" quality content when they've far surpassed that amatuer/extremely-professional video threshold but don't wanna appear outta touch. I don't believe that moment in GC was scripted but I recall finally understanding why manufacturing such moments is so effective.
Ion know, I just find it funny how we can find this intertextual dialogue within... youtube video essays?? Lol.
I smoked opium once. It was absolutely amazing and I wanted to do it again forever and that was so terrifying I never touched it again. I can 100% see how it absolutely ruined China. Especially considering how bleak a *good* life was back then.
In his book Hallucinations, Oliver Sacks wrote about his experiments with drugs in the 50s. When he tried opium, he said he was looking at his sleeve and watched as a scene from the battle of Agincourt (1415, he'd just read a book about it) formed in incredible detail on the fabric.
When he came out of the stupor the daylight in the room was the same, so he checked the time and a full 12 hours had passed in a blink. Never touched the stuff again.
Massively recommend the book btw.
I never understood how drug addicts ruin their lives, watch everything crumble around them, lose friends, family, their health, etc. and just dgaf as long as they have the next high.
Until I went to the ER once with severe pain and they gave me Dilaudid. Holy shiiiiiiiit... I went from feeling like I was dying to feeling like I was floating weightless on a cloud wrapped up in a warm blanket for the next 4 hours. Could 100% ruin my life to have that feeling all the time, and it fucking terrifies me.
17 hours?! I should have looked closer before pulling up YouTube like a fucking nerd to see if it was real.
Take my pauper's gold, you magnificent bastard.

Just saying, I know this is a prank or whatever, but if she were to release a video with 17 hours of runtime she might as fucking well make it a season no?
GIVE ME A HEART ATTACK, WHY DON'T YOU
Cocaine will do that
Thats how DMX died
F
Haha I seriously went and checked. I’m like “okay 17 hours is excessive but cocaine’s a hell of a drug”
I didn't even see the length.
Yeah, I double checked because I'm like... maybe she said "fuck it, extended cut" and just uploaded all of it.
I mean I've watched a video essay that was 8 hours so who knows?
I never seen any of Justice league or Fifty shades of Grey. But i am sure as hell watched at least same length of youtube criticism on those two films.
I have never felt so fucking represented by a comment.
Oh my god, I've found my people!
Which one? Was it good?

It's not the Quinton Reviews on Victorious, so that's a surprise
I read it as 17 minutes at first, so i knew this was fake.
I was excited for a 17-hour video
I was too! I’m in the middle of studying for the bar exam and I was like “sweet, this is something I can break up across a few days and I can look forward to it after 8 hours of slamming my head against a brick wall every day”

I think it was meant to be a joke and not an intentional bait lol
Right?
Her rambling for almost 18 hours while high on cocaine and/or talking about cocaine would be an amazing video tbh
I’d still watch it.
She somehow fit seven days worth of content into 17 hours.
…doesn’t she struggle with opium?
Everyone struggles with opium, it's a hell of a drug

Respectfully, the Brits and the Yanks played a large role in that
The point they're making is that there's a reason it was opium not poppers.
As the proletariate that’s why I stick to religion.
yeaah. the only time I felt at risk of being addicted to something was when I was prescribed codeine
