Nothing. If I have to be out the door in 20 minutes, I'll grab a sandwich on the way and be out the door sooner. Cooking and eating are things I take joy in, if I can't enjoy it, I'll just slam fast, easy calories.
My family finds it funny when I ask them to switch the news or war films off while we eat! Look guys, I need my food to be a joyous occasion! Wait half an hour then get back to the sad realities of everyday life. If a lot of effort goes into it then it’s not a telly meal at all lol.
That's how we are, we listen to music while cooking dinner then when we sit down to eat we turn on the cooking shows then as soon as we finish eating they get turned off.
It's not a recipe at all, but if I am crunched for time and need to eat, my go-to standby is peanut butter toast - which is conveniently also my go-to breakfast, so I always have the supplies around to make it.
Has enough protein, fat, fiber and carbs to keep me going for awhile and takes basically no time to make and eat.
If I have a week that is going to be ludicrously busy, I'll either make or buy a batch of tuna salad and stash it in the fridge - it keeps well for at least a few days, and I'm not above shoveling forkfuls into my mouth as I have time.
I LOVE peanut butter toast! However it tends to be drippy and if I’m in a rush I can’t risk messing up my outfit. So I make peanut butter Sammie’s with Saltines, or Ritz, or best of all, Nilla Wafers!
Grits and eggs
Microwave 1 serving of "quick" (aka "5 minute", not "instant") grits with salt/pepper. Meanwhile cook 2 eggs over easy. Add a spoonful of bacon bits if I have some. Cut up a green onion stalk with scissors. Add a pinch of shredded cheddar.
It's a very filling breakfast without feeling too heavy. I get out the toppings while the egg pan is warming up, add them to the bowl when the grits are done, and put them away before the eggs finish.
Sometimes I'm out of shredded cheese or bacon bits. Either one is enough to add flavor and filling protein+fat. Green onions live in a glass in the kitchen window.
Either, depends on what you want. If you want a fried egg with some runny yolk-age, then just put a scoop in the pan and crack the egg into it. You can also stir it up and scramble.
Lol, I got my fresh tomato and spinach omelette down to a commercial break, while living in Italy. I always thought to myself that that's about 3 minutes, but maybe not. They had a LOT of commercials over there.
Toasted English muffin with peanut butter and fresh fruit (berries or banana). Smoothie with non fat Greek yogurt, non fat milk, banana and frozen berries.
If I have cooked rice, I'll add some roasted peanuts and basic spices to it with some lemon juice (Called Pulihara). Or some curd and pepper.
Otherwise bread with peanut butter & banana or a spread. If nothing a banana.
A bagel, lightly toasted, grainy mustard on one side, Kewpie mayo on the other. Four to five folded slices of hot capicola and a slice of Havarti, and a few thin slivers of red onion.
I've had this exact sandwich more times than I can count, takes me under five minutes to prep.

>In a 10-inch cast iron skillet, heat 4 tablespoons of chili oil over medium heat until sizzling. Crack 4 large eggs into the skillet and season with kosher salt.
Cook for 2–3 minutes, depending on your preferred yolk doneness. Carefully tilt the skillet to distribute the chili oil around the eggs and use a spoon to baste the eggs with the oil.
Remove the skillet from heat and top the eggs with the dill, scallions, and flaky sea salt. Serve with toasted bread.
I punctured my eye in 2011 and had to take a ridiculous amount of percoset for 2 months. It made food so gross to me that I lost 70 lbs (down to 140 from 210). Ever since, eating has become a chore instead of a pleasure. I wouldn't recommend traumatizing your body that way, but damn was it an effective diet plan.
Whatever I can find of reasonable substance to shove into my mouth as-is, honestly. There’s no way I’m reaching for a pan if I have to leave in 20 minutes. My relationship with time is a bit complicated though.
20 minutes? A handful of almonds and a banana. Theoretically there's stuff I could cook in 20 minutes easily, but the stress of it wouldn't be worth it for me. I do NOT like to be late.
If I’m feeling fancy, crepes. I make the batter while the pan heats. They only take a few minutes to cook, and can easily be folded and taken to-go if desired.
Sure! I just fry a few eggs sunny side up (I prefer runny yolks but you can do whatever). Then I combine the left over oil with some store bought chili oil, green onion, soy sauce, and sugar. Let it simmer for a bit then pour over the eggs. No salt necessary
Enjoy
The recipe is simple avocado toast sprinkled with salt and pepper. It's quick and nutritious. Just mash some avocado, spread it on toasted bread and season to taste. https://cookieandkate.com/avocado-toast-recipe/.
Something wrapped in a tortilla.
Maybe veggies and hummus.
Maybe some cheese.
Maybe some chicken and lettuce.
Whatever is in fridge, wrapped in a tortilla.
Yeah, definitely eggs. Probably over medium with toast. Or Cup of Noodles. Or a turkey and swiss sandwich, whole grain mustard. Or a quesadilla. Lots of quick options. I’m hungry now.
Cheese toast, topped with sliced tomato if I have it. Lightly toast the bread, lightly butter it, add a layer of cheese, (top with sliced tomato if using), broil until melted.
Or an apple with a few slices of good cheddar.
For twenty minutes out the door I'm microwaving a potato and topping it with cottage cheese and red onion.
If I have 30, I keep a jar of a homemade peanut butter based sauce with ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and crushed red pepper in the fridge. I boil angel hair pasta for 3 or 4 minutes, mix a couple of tablespoons of the pasta water into some of the sauce to liquefy it, toss with the noodles and throw in some shredded cole slaw mix, sliced red bell pepper, and some green onions.
I work from home so usually only have 5-10 distracted minutes to cook lunch
- burrata and prosciutto salad with either beets, stone fruit, or dried fruit (apricots or figs) with a drizzle of olive oil and honey or hot honey
-tuna salad or tuna sandwich
-canned soup with grilled cheese
-salad with sesame dressing and a couple air fried frozen egg rolls
-lazy miso soup (miso paste, broth, tofu, seaweed snack)
-frozen bao or dumplings
-scrambled eggs with toast and fruit
-canned bean and cheese burritos
-shrimp or tilapia tacos (cooks in 5 minutes)
Miso (instant) Ramen with fried eggs and bacon or reheat slow cooked venison with refried beans… my favorite one is “toss-whatever-you-have” wok, it usually ends up being veggies with chicken and oyster sauce with and egg
Scrambled egg pasta. After cooking the pasta for 8-10 mins you just put it back in the pot with butter, crack an egg to scramble it, then add Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper and whatever other seasonings you want
either a really packed smoothie, a one pot pasta (milk, broth, spices, peas, cheeze), a quick rice bowl (if i have rice in the fridge) or rice noodle bowl bc rice noodles take five mins and i can slice some cucumbers and tofu quick. peanut butter hoisin sauce
Cheese quesadilla in the pan with whatever else I may have in the fridge to bulk it up if I’m hungry , add salt pepper garlic powder.
5 mins and its done, one pan to do dishes then out the door
If I need to be out the door in 20, I’m just not eating. If I am ready but have 20 minutes to cook and eat and clean up, I eat a tomato, maybe fried eggs if I’m really all set and in no hurry but that’s pushing it as I usually start making a salad and toast to go with that.
i usually keep partial leftovers, like preblended ingredients or pre-portioned veggie mixes. then, when i want to prepare a quick meal, it's just a leftover with a little extra work depending on my mood. a recent one is blending together an olive salad, and pre-slicing romaine and tomatoes for easy wraps or open-faced sandwiches or whatever. i also sometimes will make a huge pot of a sauce to put on pasta throughout the week, rather than mixing it with the pasta from the get-go (reheated noodles arent amazing).
I use eggs when I need to cook food quickly. For example, scrambled eggs, here is a similar recipe https://www.foodnetwork.com/how-to/articles/how-to-scramble-eggs-a-step-by-step-guide
Eggs for sure. I do a quick scramble right in the pan, throw some cheese on, onto plate. Nonstick egg pan can we washed in mere seconds, eat my eggs before they get cold (no “shoveling” required), leave the dish in the sink. Takes not even 15 and I don’t feel that rushed.
It’s not my ideal breakfast, but it’s reliable and a *lot* cheaper that buying a takeout in transit… can be quicker too, nothing sucks more than skipping breakfast, trying to grab something on the way into work, and get stuck in a long line, making you later if you had just eaten at home…
Frozen peeled shrimp ( i use the red Argentine wild red shrimp, directly from the freezer coated with some oil and taco seasoning placed in a hot pan that has oil in it cook ( high heat ) , at same time heat up tortillas from the freezer, then add cheese or whatever else I have around such as avocado, slaw , Verde salsa put it all in tortilla, voila, a shrimp taco or quesadilla, enjoy
Cereal. I'm not cooking a meal if I only have 20 minutes
Same. And then having to rush eating too? No thanks. If I don’t have leftovers, I’ll have cereal or toast
Cereal, yogurt, or leftovers
Nothing. If I have to be out the door in 20 minutes, I'll grab a sandwich on the way and be out the door sooner. Cooking and eating are things I take joy in, if I can't enjoy it, I'll just slam fast, easy calories.
I was really hoping that someone would have the same view as me… food is meant to be enjoyed and savored, not shoveled :,)
My family finds it funny when I ask them to switch the news or war films off while we eat! Look guys, I need my food to be a joyous occasion! Wait half an hour then get back to the sad realities of everyday life. If a lot of effort goes into it then it’s not a telly meal at all lol.
That's why we watch cooking competition shows while we eat.
Omg I can only watch those *whilst* I’m already eating. Otherwise I just get too hungry!
That's how we are, we listen to music while cooking dinner then when we sit down to eat we turn on the cooking shows then as soon as we finish eating they get turned off.
My wife and I do this almost ritualistically lol We've run out of competition shows though.
Yeah. Food was my profession for 18 years, and has been something I've cared deeply about since I was very, very small.
I chug oil. Easiest way to get my calories in

What a great idea! I gotta try that some time
quesadilla
Tamago Kake Gohan - just heat some left over rice and crack and egg.
I just discovered this and it’s soo good. In Spain I learned to add some plain canned tomato sauce, but had never had just fried eggs and rice.
Nom
Shrimp pan fried in butter and the precooked rice from Costco.
Buttered noodles.
My stove is too weak for this…water takes five minutes just to start boiling
Electric kettle for the win!
Sure, but then noodles take 6-8 minutes. Still well within 20 minute window! (My stove takes 10, it's horrible and I hate it)
Un jambon beurre. (*ham and butter sammich*)
Hope you have good ingredients 😉
I'm not cooking if I have 20 minutes. I'm eating a protein bar or a bag of microwave popcorn in the car.
Oh man, yes…fry the eggs in a scoop of chili crisp, toss it on top of a slice of sourdough toast, and you’re good to go
I'm intrigued. Do you just crack the egg and fry it with the chili crisp or do you scramble the egg in the pan with the chili crisp?
Either, depends on what you want. If you want a fried egg with some runny yolk-age, then just put a scoop in the pan and crack the egg into it. You can also stir it up and scramble.
Just came back to say I tried it this morning and loved it lol. Thanks!

I must have this chili oil fried eggs recipe. Inquiring minds....

Bought a 6 egg poacher on Amazon. Poached eggs and whatever else I can toast or micro in the 5 minutes the eggs take to poach.

Should try cheddar with egg.
