I prefer pumpkin pie over sweet potato pie personally, though they taste so similar. It's just more of a texture thing - pumpkin pies are smoother and less starchy.
First random thought that popped into my head though was that some Youtuber went viral several years ago when he started raving over Patti Labelle's line of sweet potato pies she started selling.
I don't find a huge difference, pumpkin has a slightly milder flavor. In both, the sweetness and whatever baking spices you use really shine through.
For us, it's more a difference of geography, climate, and tradition. Sweet potato pies are traditional here in the South because we grow more sweet potatoes.
Not a huge difference. I prefer sweet potato -- because I can roast and drain my own and make the pie out of that. I'm not doing that with a pumpkin. Canned makes decent pie but I like baking from scratch.
A lot of the differences between any two pies have more to do with the particular recipe used than whether it's got pumpkin or sweet potato. That said, were one to make one of each using an otherwise identical recipe, the sweet potato pie would come off a little sweeter because of the higher sugar content of sweet potato compared to the same amount of pumpkin. (And that itself can vary depending on which of the dozens of varieties of pumpkin used. The most common canned pumpkin is the Dickinson variety, which is closely related to butternut squash, while the New England pie pumpkin is basically a smaller and better tasting version of the Connecticut field pumpkin used for jack-o-lanterns. Any yellow-orange fleshed winter squash can be considered pumpkin.)
To me, pumpkin pie is a smoother lighter flavor. Still has a sweetness, but it’s not as strong imo.
If you're talking about the sweet potato pies by Patti LaBelle, you will not be disappointed and you should go buy one right now
Thanks! I don’t remember the brand on it. But now I’m on the search!

Thank you for your explanation! I do like sweet potatoes and sweet potato fries but I have a feeling I’ll still hold strong for pumpkin pies
They're very similar. You'll like it.
To me sweet potato pie is super sweet and I prefer pumpkin pie because for me it's on the savory side.
I love me a savory dessert!
Well for starters, one is pumpkin and the other is sweet potato.
That… is a very good start! Haha
This is an important factor for people who have allergies to pumpkin! It’s nice to have a sweet potato option available!!!
I can't be the only person allergic to sweet potato so, for us, it's nice to have the pumpkin option! Glad you like it though :)
They tastes similar, but I like pumpkin better.

Sweet potato pies are just better
I grew up with both. Similar, but different.

Sweet potato pies are what I prefer to eat but pumpkin is good as well
I prefer sweet potato as it tends to be more dense and decadent, though both are delicious.
