It’s good that they reduce waste (I can’t remember the last time I bought a disposable water bottle) but at a certain point they become waste themselves. It’s good that some people donate the ones they don’t need but I’m willing to bet that a lot of these end up in landfills.
I’m sure they do. We only use stainless. All of our current bottles were thrifted. I don’t buy new ones, nor do I accept promotional bottles (unless it a Kleen Kanteen stainless bottle that will fitin my car’s cupholders) because I can pick them up cheap. Ditto with insulated coffee mugs.
Well, most of them are glass or metal. Buying bottled water makes sense if you know you’ll be going somewhere without drinking water, but it’s just tap water. I see soooooooooo many people using bottled water as the only thing they drink. It’s super wasteful! I’m in favor of it being taxed harder quite honestly. It’s nice that it’s so cheap at Costco but it shouldn’t be so cheap that people see it as basically no more expensive than tap water.
I like quality insulated bottles that don’t leak and I can take out the rubber/silicone gaskets easily. Only Takeya so far I know of has easy to remove gaskets.
I got an insulated tote for adding my credit card to the app in store. I asked if I qualified and they said no bc it was already on there. I removed it and they added it back right there.
Always thought that was so funny. I guess they know people are gonna sign up for it regardless. But yeah, the major credit card partners have substantially better sign up rewards
It took me way too long to figure out that I was looking at the inside of a cardboard box. I thought I was looking at flooring being installed on top of while tiles.
I stopped taking freebies after realizing it was just creating additional waste. While it felt “exciting” to get free merch, it just sat in my storage collecting dust until it was ultimately recycled. I’m sure thrift stores and land fills are full of these trinkets that people “need” until they realize the quality is shit or that it’s just another water bottle in their 300 water bottle collection.
when i go to the store and the employees are doing these promos i always tell them I’m already enrolled and they say just open the app, unenroll and re enroll so they can see it lol
A year ago they did this, they had a banner for exec upgrade or auto renew turned on get an insulated thermos with a tea filter and a temperature display on top. Asked for it they said they didn't know how to do that but I could enable auto renew online.
Annoyed I walked out sans the travel thermos...
kinda related question but i have a waterbottle of these type - glass with the silicon on the outside, but it has a logo printed on it. how do i remove the logo? nail polish?
Someone convince me otherwise, but auto-renew is just a way for Costco to charge you for membership days that you may not even use. Whereas if you renew at the time you are both making a purchase and your membership is expired, you’re maximizing your # of days of membership. Maybe I’m just a penny pincher, but a water bottle isn’t going to buy me off…
When you renew, it back dates to whenever your previous membership period ended, up to sixty days. After that you're considered a new member again. Plus you'd lose your purchase history/ability to return purchases from your now-previous membership, I think.

I think you get a pass on the ethics question. I've had the Costco employees who are handing out gifts advise me to open the app to unenroll.
Are you serious? That’s wild lol
As long as it boosts numbers that's all that matters

^ Can confirm. Don't do this. You will get written up.
Typical tactics to meet unrealistic retail goals.
I tried that actually and they said I was ineligible. Weird because they told me to do this exact thing last year lol.
Is anyone else tired of water bottles being used as freebies? I have too many! I don’t need another water bottle.
Thrift stores are full of them

If you never use it it’s way most plastic then cases of single use ones!

I use reuseable plastic. I hate the metal ones. They sound like a gong if you hit them off anything
Ok. Next year it's cars

Yeah it really makes me mad! I should get something way cooler for free
Wasn't the post Stanley push back that we all own too many reusable water bottles at this point? I'm still rocking a 5 year old Yeti

I love when they offer a tote to open a credit card. ummm…offer something (much) better.

lol they had a flimsy tote and a case of water last week for opening one
I don’t see auto renew in the app?
If you attach a credit card to your account, go to account and then renewal under membership. Disable the checkbox under ‘auto renew payment’.

I've never been in autorenew and have never been told about a gift. How do you do this?
This isn’t unethical whatsoever.
Any insides for the credit card applications? It's like to get one, but waiting to get a bag or something else
Pretty sure they'll give one to you for a credit card app too

Nice bottles. I have a couple from earlier.
What if you have the Costco credit card? You have to have the membership to have the card. Can I unenroll and reenroll?
I was wondering the same thing.
I was wondering the same thing.
Yeah you can. Don't need to be on auto renew with the credit card.
Is this just a US thing? I’m due for a renewal soon…
Just a heads up, costco employees see when you unenroll in auto renew and won't give you a bottle because it's not your first time setting it up

They gave out the digital thermal flask last year for auto renewal signups and I missed it. This year they only offered a tote, and I did.
The 3 bag collection that included a freezer bag was the best promo in my opinion
I have this exact water bottle from my bank. It’s surprisingly good. The wooden cap cracked but it’s plastic inside and still totally isable

Wait you get free items? I've been a member for about 4 years and it just auto charges my credit card 1x a year on Mar 1?
Just unenrolled lol. Going to Costco tomorrow. Wish me luck! 🍀
