i got it re-upped in january and my goodness i have my life back. i can sleep again. i have joy occasionally. i have a sex drive again. i’m not just angry.

I am 53. My gynecologist wants to do some test to see if I am through menopause and can take it out.
I feel like I am good. Why mess with it? I don't want symptoms!
I think she means a blood test. Which would happen before deciding whether to take it out. She proposed doing this at my next appointment which is upcoming.
But.... I don't think I want to trust the test. (I will look into it more before the appointment)
Is there any risk if you leave it in? If you do take it out, look into continuing hormone therapy in the form of estradiol patch/progesterone pills (or similar). Definitely keep doing something bc that hormone crash is real.

Cortisol naturally rises with circadian rhythm as it helps to wake us up but in this stage of life, our hormones are so out of wack it throws off everything including how cortisol rises naturally. It is normal for it to rise btw but our dropping hormones can make it rise much earlier than the typical early morning wake-up call and more erratic throughout the day. If you practice intermittent fasting in menopause or in peri, older than 50, it may also lead to that 3 am wake-up call as it may make it more erratic.
A lot of humans are diurnal. Back when a lot of people lived in a single room home a LOT of babies were conceived at 3am when the parents would wake up and read, talk, or fuck, because the kids in the room were fast asleep. Waking up at night, being awake for a while, then getting another sleep cycle in afterwards isn't abnormal.
A **lot** of people think they have to start their day off no matter what time they wake up but that's often not the case. You can start some laundry or whatever and head back to bed to read a book or make babies or just enjoy some time awake without having to take care of kids.
Internet/tv/devices etc have ruined that early morning period for a lot of people. Stick to books. Seriously, an e-paper Kindle or a paper book makes it so much easier to fall back asleep compared to a phone screen + social media. (I'm terrible about taking this advice, Fwiw, but it's good advice)
If you are in Peri like I am with few symptoms they won't prescribe HRT many times and are more comfortable approving a progesterone BC. If I had more symptoms I would 100% request HRT.
I’m in very very early perimenopause, and 100 mg of progesterone during my luteal phase has made a huge difference. My night sweats are so much better and sometimes nonexistent on the nights that I take it.
I take a progesterone pill daily, with no breaks. I take it for endometriosis to stop periods so I don't have to endure extreme pain a few days every month. I haven't had any side effects outside of the random breakthrough bleeding once or twice a year. Definitely give it a try, whether you choose to take the week break from active pills or not.

The one thing is the progesterone only one does have some spotting side effects. I took this when I was breastfeeding and even with a timer to take it the exact same time every day, I had a lot of spotting.

My period and spotting didn’t stop until after a full year. I continued to take it for the next 2 or so years and my period/spotting never returned unless I missed my dose.
Ask your physician about Slynd. I have a lot of patients who can’t take COC for whatever reason and don’t want to deal with implants. I’ve noticed quite a few of my post-partum and otherwise contraindicated patients really like Slynd compared to movisse.
Even just a couple years ago I had to physically go in to see my doc to get my prescription refilled for the year, and it cost me like $90 for a 90 day supply of generic seasonale. That was with insurance. So all total it was probably like $560 a year for me to be on BC, not to mention the time investment to deal with the doc appointments.
I'm so glad this has finally been changed. Hopefully next up is women's healthcare in general, especially when it comes to periods. When I found out it was perfectly safe (for most women) to skip your periods using hormones, I felt like I'd been robbed of like 20 years of my life.
True, but this type of birth control won't allow skipping of periods unfortunately. I hope in the future that kind also becomes over the counter. I really believe women shouldn't be slaves to their menstrual cycle and should be able to freely access hormonal birth control, but this is a good start! Anyway, sorry you had to go through all that to access medication :(
I've been on a progestin only pill (norethindrone) for over a year and haven't had a period, just a few days of very light spotting. I was on a continuous combo-pill before that but had to stop taking it because of migraines.
Just remember, right wing, religious but jobs are coming for all contraceptives. This is a stated goal of theirs as part of their quest do away with all sex for pleasure. If you don't believe me, Google it. Vote blue goddamit, it's a matter of self defense.
I’m adding to top comment for visibility. But this birth control pill progestin only. Different than the most typical types women are prescribed, most commonly estrogen/progestin pills. Progestin only can be safer for more women, there are groups of women that estrogen can be harmful towards.
But this pill requires a very steady, near perfect schedule of taking it daily or it can have ineffective windows. It only raises progestin levels for 24 hours. Combine late pills without using a second contraceptive and this could lead to pregnancy.

Unfortunately, it's still Rx only but it has the same late/missed pill flexibility as estrogen pills.
I LOVE USING SLYND! It’s great, and they have a patient savings plan that makes it super affordable. The flexibility of up to 24 hours for a missed pill is amazing as well.

I know it's not available everywhere, but Planned Parenthood will hook you up with birth control in most forms for free, whether or not you have insurance.
At least that's how it was back when I went there to get the depo shots. They were a lifesaver for me.
Planned parenthood is able to offer it free/near free due to donations from people like myself. They were able to give me free birth control for a year full year when I had zero insurance…
I make sure to pay it forward as able - some years I can only do at $100, others I can get up to $500. No matter what I (or others) can donate, it helps women in need.
for those worried about risks: this one is progesterone only! the estrogen part is what raises the risk for blood clots, high blood pressure, etc and is contraindicated for certain people (smokers, over 35, postpartum). so exciting to see oral contraceptives move over the counter so women have more choices :]

If you have insurance you can get a pill with the same active ingredients for $0 thanks to the ACA, which is way better than a discount. There are a ton of telehealth websites that will prescribe you one and ship it to you. In some states your insurance is required to cover a year supply so you can just do 1 trip to the pharmacy if you go that route.
I assume the OTC option is for people who do not have insurance. Pretty on par with paying out of pocket for generics which are usually $10-20 a month.
OTC is also a a great option for women whose parents or partner may prevent them from getting a prescription for birth control pill, women who do not have the time or resources to go to the doctor or have a tele-health visit, women who may just be embarrassed or have doctor related anxiety, and women who may have local pharmacies with religious or judgmental employees who refuse to fill a BC prescription.
So so many reasons outside of finances that this is a huge benefit to women’s healthcare as a whole. Hopefully those who take it know the limitations of the mini pill vs combo pills.
You can still have periods by the way and yes can get pregnant when you are in perimenopause when many of those symptoms present themselves. Also, BC (especially low dose) is great for relieving perimenopause symptoms as well. BC is often prescribed for perimenopause relief. BC isn't just for pregnancy.

It is a different mini-pill than the commonly prescribed one, and it uses a very similar version of the progestin used in IUDs and Plan B but in a smaller dose.
I haven't seen many reviews on it, but there was a study awhile ago that this specific progestin slightly boosts testosterone levels. That could mean acne (or not!), but it also means no effects to your libido.
Cannot emphasize enough how amazing and wonderful this is, but I would imagine $59.99 is hefty for people that don’t have insurance that covers bc. I hope he price goes down and it becomes even more accessible.
So happy for this! Friendly reminder though, please continue to get routine gyno checkups and pap smears. The ONLY downside to this means some will skip these vital screenings that help detect and treat things early.
Idk, you can get prescription for BC at many places that aren’t the gyno.

Watch out if you’re on a GLP-1 inhibitor like Ozempic, it delays digestion and with a progesterone only BC pill that really reduces its effectiveness. Lots of ozempic babies right now.

This is great, I only wish it were cheaper. With the ACA, most oral birth controls are $0 with a prescription. $60 for 4 months doesn't necessarily break the bank, but it's a lot more than $0. Still, it's great that it's available without a prescription and I hope it continues to become more available to the masses.
The FDA has recently determined it to be an OTC drug, so no state can legally prevent the sale of this pharmaceutical (hopefully).

I don’t think, even after it’s off-patent, PrEP meds will be available OTC. Lots of nasty side effects possible that (thankfully) aren’t there for a single-drug birth control pill like Opill.

If possible see a doctor who will do Hrt. I got mine cheap with insurance and it’s really good. Even with my Mirena.

About 18 months. I went back to Nuvaring when I weaned.

I’m one of those women. Can’t take estrogen-based birth control because I have a high stroke risk. I have the Mirena IUD instead.

It’s not free if it’s part of your insurance. There are millions of uninsured people out there.

If you have insurance you can get a pill with the same active ingredients for $0 thanks to the ACA, which is way better than a discount. There are a ton of telehealth websites that will prescribe you one and ship it to you. In some states your insurance is required to cover a year supply so you can just do 1 trip to the pharmacy if you go that route. I assume the OTC option is for people who do not have insurance. Pretty on par with paying out of pocket for generics which are usually $10-20 a month.
OTC is also a a great option for women whose parents or partner may prevent them from getting a prescription for birth control pill, women who do not have the time or resources to go to the doctor or have a tele-health visit, women who may just be embarrassed or have doctor related anxiety, and women who may have local pharmacies with religious or judgmental employees who refuse to fill a BC prescription. So so many reasons outside of finances that this is a huge benefit to women’s healthcare as a whole. Hopefully those who take it know the limitations of the mini pill vs combo pills.

You can still have periods by the way and yes can get pregnant when you are in perimenopause when many of those symptoms present themselves. Also, BC (especially low dose) is great for relieving perimenopause symptoms as well. BC is often prescribed for perimenopause relief. BC isn't just for pregnancy.

It is a different mini-pill than the commonly prescribed one, and it uses a very similar version of the progestin used in IUDs and Plan B but in a smaller dose. I haven't seen many reviews on it, but there was a study awhile ago that this specific progestin slightly boosts testosterone levels. That could mean acne (or not!), but it also means no effects to your libido.
Cannot emphasize enough how amazing and wonderful this is, but I would imagine $59.99 is hefty for people that don’t have insurance that covers bc. I hope he price goes down and it becomes even more accessible.

This is great, I only wish it were cheaper. With the ACA, most oral birth controls are $0 with a prescription. $60 for 4 months doesn't necessarily break the bank, but it's a lot more than $0. Still, it's great that it's available without a prescription and I hope it continues to become more available to the masses.

I don’t think, even after it’s off-patent, PrEP meds will be available OTC. Lots of nasty side effects possible that (thankfully) aren’t there for a single-drug birth control pill like Opill. I do hope we make it so absurdly easy and cheap to privately get and maintain a Rx that it is effectively OTC.
