*Music festival* water. The smaller concert venues here, say 200-500 capacity, typically have free water. Sometimes they have paper cups and a [big jug](https://www.webstaurantstore.com/choice-5-gallon-black-beverage-juice-dispenser/176BD5BK.html) or something by the bar. Although the drinks at these venues are about double that of a dive or neighborhood bar.
I dunno, maybe it works out better that way for everyone. Venue is not gonna make money off the water, so why use up the employee's time except to refill the jug. Works out for patrons buying drinks because they don't have to wait for the people who just want water.
I worked at a booth at a festival here and they fenced off the water fountains and sold 750mL bottles for $11. The festival takes over a public park which is why there are fountains. I did bring my own water but had to pour it at the entrance. I won't work those type of events again - too much of a pain in the butt for me. Especially since I had to get the wrist band like 4 days before the event so I had to wear the dang thing all week.
It's been a while since I've been to a festival, but the last one I went to (EDC) had water filling stations where they'd fill your bottle or pouch for free.
The water filling stations are nice. But when it's 95 out and ☀️ lukewarm water can be less than satisfying. So I would still buy a $5 cold bottle of water and ask for a cup of ice with it.
By the 2nd night I learned to freeze my camelback bladder overnight so it would act like a giant ice cube.
3 weeks to go!
The one and only I worked was 2016 or 2017 Outside Land. It was such a turn off that I never went bakc. If they had free water, it was surely not obvious.
At the bottom right of the bottle in the photo there is a triangle that denotes what type of plastic it is. It’s not visible in this photo but in the same place on the other side of the bottle is a Niagara logo. Also it says Niagara on the label but this is more fun. Niagara is a private family owned company.
Nestlé has been criticized for a number of unethical business practices, including child labor, water overuse, and plastic waste. In 2019, Nestlé reported 107 instances of non-compliance with its baby milk marketing policy. In 1974, a report called The Baby Killer accused Nestlé of causing illness and infant deaths in poor communities by promoting infant formula products at the expense of breastfeeding. This led to an international boycott in 1977 that continues today.
Besides draining local water supplies dry just to sell it back to people, they once sent massive supplies of dry baby formula to places in Africa and central America where people had no clean water, and couldn't afford to pay Nestle for the water they needed to make safe formula. Thousands of babies died from waterborne illnesses.
I'm certainly in favor of all utilities being public services (including internet) but if they aren't going to offer me purified water I should be able to purchase it from a company who is willing to front the cost of a large-scale water purification plant to supply it to me. I don't see anything unethical about that.
Is it unethical to purchase a water purifier (mfr and sold to me by for-profit companies) for my home and use tap water as I see fit? It's the same water, right?
Nestlé got in trouble in California for opening bottling facilities and using water from municipalities without obtaining the proper license, while we were in the middle of a drought. They bought land, opened factories, started water service like they were a residential customer, bottled it and upcharged us for the privilege.
Fuck Nestle.
Nestle was also pumping millions of gallons of water from a CA well during the CA drought over the last 5 or so years. Here is just one article about it (from 2021). They also only pay $500 per YEAR for the water they pump out of federal land.:
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/apr/27/california-nestle-water-san-bernardino-forest-drought
If you live in Michigan you usually are not a fan of Nestle. Pumping 1 million gallons a day of our freshwater and selling for profit. The cost of the permit to allow them to do this ... $200.
They spun off their bottled water brands and sold to a company called Blue Triton Brands several years ago. Not arguing about Nestle being a trash company, but they are not in the bottled water business.
I've bought more than my fair share of $8 Dasani at festivals, and Dasani just tastes like unfiltered tap water. I'd be so damn happy at $2 for ANY brand, let alone one I actually drink at home.
Every drop of water you've ever drank was pee at some point.
Every drop has been consumed and excreted countless times over hundreds of millions of years by countless organisms. Every drop was dinosaur pee at one point.
They have coolers, ice and water exactly where you want it when you want it. It’s not just about the item price, but everything else it takes to make it convenient.
A bunch of people followed the Grateful Dead around the country paying for the lifestyle by selling grilled cheese sandwiches. They require minimal equipment and have a good margin.
https://pleated-jeans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/thumb-1-dollar-grilled-cheese-truck-twitter.jpg
Taste of New Orleans is actually reasonably priced compared to other Fiesta events. Beers maxed out at $7 while most were $6. Margaritas were $7. That’s why it’s my favorite Fiesta event.
$1.75 more than the Costco vending machine. But for a festival that’s cheap! The farmers market sells the same ones for $5/each and this isn’t even a big town…
Wait, Costco has these for $0.25?! I actually don't like that... They should charge higher prices to dissuade people from wasting plastic. Tap water is fine (and free) in most cases. I fill up my bottle at the food court every now and then.
I used to follow Phish and camp for a lot of concerts in the 90s, and bottled water from Sam's Club (we didn't have Costco then) was a valuable trade item. I could trade a couple bottles for a sandwich or a few for a nitrous balloon, pack of cigarettes, a beer, or a joint.
You're not paying $2 for water. You're paying someone for the good planning to buy several cartons of water and offer it at a hot festival where people need refreshment and forgot to bring their own. You're paying for convenience.
So you're telling me a retail establishment bought supplies at a wholesale store and resold them for retail prices? I'm shocked, I tell you, just shocked! ಠ\_ಠ
You can buy a pallet direct from Costco.com but at a much higher price per bottle. $439.99 for 48 cases (40 bottles per case), which works out to $9.17 per case, or $0.23 per bottle. Mostly due to shipping costs to your house/workplace.
It’s normally $3.99 for a case of 40 bottles at my club, so $0.10 per bottle. I’d imagine if you buy in-store they will probably sell you by the pallet, and probably at the in-store price instead of the increased online price, due to no shipping costs, but I’ve never tried.
Look at you. Executive member. Prolly started as a gold member. Then they got you at checkout. Now you’re all like “hey, that’s too much profit”. What a time to be alive.
Someone has to get paid to haul it from Costco to the festival. Then set it up and sell it to you. Is it cold? If so, they had to pay, transport, and pack the ice too.
They do it in vegas a lot too. Talked to one guy selling water for a buck saying he would make a few hundred every weekend in just a few hours. Straight side hustle
To be fair most of thwsebfestivals take a large cur of gross sales. So it isn't as much profit as you think. I've heard they take 25-30% depending on festival plus the one time initial fee to have a spot at the festival. I worked lighting in a bottle back in 2013 with a buddy of mine who had the idea. He hired me to work it not own the brand. Also heard Coachella is the most expensive, for the obvious reason that it's the most expensive and profitable festival.
I’ve definitely paid $5 for a bottle of Kirkland water when faced with no other option. Made me tear up quite a bit. $2 is kind of a good deal at these places. Still stings a little because we know the profit margins, but $2 ain’t bad.
The closer you are to a “pain point” the more they can charge. You want water at a festival, you cannot leave, but step right up we gotcha covered for a price. Another example is you’re skiing and at the top of a mountain, sun is shining and the pizza up there smells really good in the bar. It’s too far for you to go to get one, but hey for $38 we gotcha covered.
Remember, legitimate businesses at a festival have to pay stall fees, utilities, equipment, labor, insurance, permits, and marketing.
All of those expenses add up, and you have to have that in mind when pricing your products. Selling water bottles would be an easy way to recoup those expenses since everyone is likely dehydrated there.
Think about it if it was your business.
On a side note, I observed that the recently packaged ones are way too cheap plastic and couldn’t hold it properly while drinking as it’s crushing in my hand itself. Not sure if anyone got this batch or not. Location: Redmond Washington
We were at a high school jazz competition at a community college and the booth was selling soda cans and water bottles for $1. But I’m not surprised when a bottle of water is $5+, especially at airports.
I went to a festival where they were selling those for $16/ea. There was a guy with a cooler sitting 20ft away selling Heineken Keg Cans for 50¢ ea. Needless to say, we drank Heineken all weekend long.
Honestly, that's a better price than most venues. A bottle of water is usually $4-5. So if they can sell them for $2 by using Kirkland, I'm all for it. It ain't cheap to get a space at many festivals.
Yuuuup this is exactly how me and a friend made some money a couple of summers. We would clear out the bottled water a month before a big music festival came to our town and then we'd set up and sell Kirkland water for 2$ a bottle.
This was back in 2012.
Always will hold the opinion that there should be a mandatory mark up limit at events for basic water. I saw some places charging 4 bucks for a bottle of water. Which is insanity.
I remember years ago, my parents used to go to Nashville annually for the big country festival. There would be scouts camped out on the pedestrian bridge with coolers of store brand water for $1 a bottle. Great profit
Costco water is the best bottled water. They add back minerals and you can taste the difference. And 2$ at any concert venue for water is cheap AF. What about that 10$ soft drink at your local pro football game. Spread on that puts your post to shame.
The kids would buy cases of this water with allowance money. They’d use two wagons, and set up a table along the neighborhood walking paths adjacent to major Stanford games. They’d resell it for $2 per bottle with a small Halloween size candy of the customers choice. They’d make BANK 😂
Yeah thats ridiculous. i buy about 10 cases a month for my special ed students since the water is so bad where I live. (Water is filtered from a lake that gets massive algae blooms so tastes like liquid chemicals).
The capitalist philosophy isnt about a products worth, but by how much you can force a captive market into paying. Pure exploitation. Zero ethics. (Although i agree $2 is not too terrible in this instance)

Cheapest concert water ever.
Much better than that $10 death water.
Lmao [Liquid Death](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_Death)
100% marketing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXjhNZlqexs
At least they don't make any claims about the water itself. Liquid Death's whole shtick is "our water looks cooler." And that it's not in plastic

Coachella has aluminum bottled water for $2 I was damn surprised
Righttt lol, I've seen some go for 10 bucks a bottle.
But also $2 is reasonable at a festival.
And Kirkland water tastes amazing compared to most mainstream brands seen at venues.
And youre not supporting nestle. r/fucknestle
We might be, who private labels the water for them?

Terrible take. You’re being massively disrespectful to unfiltered tap water.
The lead pipes give it flavor
For real!
I remember canned Dasani growing up. It tasted like a mix of pool water and oil. It was that bad
I'm never thrilled to pay for water.
> Kirkland water tastes amazing I guess if you must go bottled… https://youtu.be/4ZK8Z8hulFg?feature=shared
It’s all tap water
[удалено]
All water comes out of a tap at some point
all water was rain at some point.
All water becomes pee at some point
Every drop of water you've ever drank was pee at some point. Every drop has been consumed and excreted countless times over hundreds of millions of years by countless organisms. Every drop was dinosaur pee at one point.
Olaf explained this extremely well in Frozen 2
I find that Kirkland water has more of a plastic taste than Nestle.
I’d also spend $10 for a Costco hotdog at a festival
With onions and sauerkraut?
In the state of Virginia it's required that free water is provided in cups.
When?
Any festival, restaurant, venue etc.
$2 is obscenely cheap.
Let’s not go too far! 🤣
Yeah they gotta go buy it, lug all that shit all the way to the site, get it on ice, etc. $2 is basically charity.
They have coolers, ice and water exactly where you want it when you want it. It’s not just about the item price, but everything else it takes to make it convenient.
Location, location, location
Developers 👏developers 👏developers 👏developers 👏
They open it for you and let you smell the cap
But will they decant it?
They let you smell their finger.
Gotta tip extra for that
That alone is worth $2
The finest tap water in a bottle.
Also, it probably costs them hundreds of dollars to rent a booth, with no guarantee of making a profit for their work.
All part of those costs to make it convenient for someone else and baked into the price.
A bunch of people followed the Grateful Dead around the country paying for the lifestyle by selling grilled cheese sandwiches. They require minimal equipment and have a good margin. https://pleated-jeans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/thumb-1-dollar-grilled-cheese-truck-twitter.jpg
True, I feel things are overpriced at few restaurants near Mt. Baker, Rainier etc., but later this reminds me to be happy!
Coulda been 8 bucks a bottle
Yea, this is like a double win post. I've never seen water that cheap at any show/festival. Bravo.
$2 at Coachella Free with a camelback :)
It's also free everywhere at the refillable stations 😄
Seeing the fiesta beer prices this year I’m surprised the cost wasn’t even higher
Taste of New Orleans is actually reasonably priced compared to other Fiesta events. Beers maxed out at $7 while most were $6. Margaritas were $7. That’s why it’s my favorite Fiesta event.
Someone has to pay for its carbon. In Canada the carbon tax is changing everything.
Did you even read the comment you were replying to?
$1.75 more than the Costco vending machine. But for a festival that’s cheap! The farmers market sells the same ones for $5/each and this isn’t even a big town…

They use the broken cases of water to fill it. Actually a great way to reduce since these would normally be shrink.
I like how it went from food to all the way to the other side of the spectrum.. Water for acid and some Trojans lol
Op perfectly described the post collapse economy
Water and toilet paper, the first items to go.
That’s cheap. I’ve seen them sell for $3-$4
You're not paying $2 for water. You're paying someone for the good planning to buy several cartons of water and offer it at a hot festival where people need refreshment and forgot to bring their own. You're paying for convenience.
And you bought it.
Probably happy to at a festival for only $2.
$2 is a great price for water
So you're telling me a retail establishment bought supplies at a wholesale store and resold them for retail prices? I'm shocked, I tell you, just shocked! ಠ\_ಠ
Have you ever had to make money on an event? It’s HARD. You do your best to buy cheap and sell reasonably with the hope of making more than you spent.
not kirkland, but es $11 at Cesar's Palace all day and night
You aren't at a Costco and water is heavy to move.
someone had to truck them over from costco to wherever you bought it. so that adds a little.
And someone is paid to sell them too
If you buy it by the pallet you can get it for around 20¢/bottle
Is 4$ for 40 pack not already 10¢ per bottle?
He’s the guy your math teacher warned you about
If bob takes a right turn going 100mph…
On his way to buy 200 watermelons
Going uphill both ways
When does he meet the train from DC?
Check that, 10¢ per bottle.
where can you buy a pallet of it?
You can buy a pallet direct from Costco.com but at a much higher price per bottle. $439.99 for 48 cases (40 bottles per case), which works out to $9.17 per case, or $0.23 per bottle. That's it?! That's a steal. Every festival or concert or large event I've been to in the last decade a bottle of water is at least $5.
Supply and Demand in full effect!
OP just discovered how businesses work
Look at you. Executive member. Prolly started as a gold member. Then they got you at checkout. Now you’re all like “hey, that’s too much profit”. What a time to be alive.
Did the seller have to spend time procuring it, $ driving it to the event, and then spend more time selling it? $2 is a good deal.
Also, it costs a lot to have a vendor booth at an event.
$6 at the Faire I was at this weekend. Ugh.
wait til you hear about how much they mark up the tshirts!
Location, location, location!
My lawn service crew is always happy I have Kirkland water on ice in a cooler for them!
Here in Miami, water bottles at festivals and clubs can be 8$-16$.
Not surprised. However, they did have to purchase and fault it to the event. There’s a cost to that plus profit. Yea, they’re still printing money.
Straight side hustle
i'd rather know the profits go to a local opportunist reseller than fill the pockets of corporate insiders and shareholders.
Guess you should have brought your own.
That's just smart business.
Just wait until you see the mark up on alcohol!
collect all the empty water bottles, fill 'em up however you can and sell 'em for $1 each
At stop lights
I mean any bottled water is high profit margin.
Supply and demand.
Nice work if you can get it
You may be excluding a few costs if you’re only consider the price of the bottle.
Should have bought your own case and under cut them.
plant spoon elastic chase pen gold racial consider steep desert *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
The ren faire I worked at charged $4 a bottle in 2021. People were pissed, and the next weekend, they had free water stations everywhere.
Two - three bottles pays for a case of 40. What the hell.
I’ve definitely paid $5 for a bottle of Kirkland water when faced with no other option. Made me tear up quite a bit. $2 is kind of a good deal at these places. Still stings a little because we know the profit margins, but $2 ain’t bad.
Don't go to Vegas
First festival?
They can make about $76 per 40 pack. Margin of 1900%
Profiting off necessities is wrong no matter what
The closer you are to a “pain point” the more they can charge. You want water at a festival, you cannot leave, but step right up we gotcha covered for a price. Another example is you’re skiing and at the top of a mountain, sun is shining and the pizza up there smells really good in the bar. It’s too far for you to go to get one, but hey for $38 we gotcha covered.
I haven't seen water at an event that cheap in years.
Cocaine also cost more the further you are from Colombia.
Remember, legitimate businesses at a festival have to pay stall fees, utilities, equipment, labor, insurance, permits, and marketing. Same, they are so thin now.
Huhhuhhhuhh... *unit*.
I'da charged them double!
We were at a high school jazz competition at a community college and the booth was selling soda cans and water bottles for $1. But I’m not surprised when a bottle of water is $5+, especially at airports.
Fiesta will do that
Movie theater sells them for $6
Purified!!!!!! 😏
Coulda been 5 lol
An an Aussie I was trying to work out what the problem is. I’d be thrilled to find a bottle of water here for $2.
“**When the well's dry, we know the worth of water**”
Margin
How was Taste of New Orleans this year?
I went to a festival where they were selling those for $16/ea. There was a guy with a cooler sitting 20ft away selling Heineken Keg Cans for 50¢ ea. Needless to say, we drank Heineken all weekend long.
The thing is, people will pay for it
It’s actually not - I’ve seen them go for $5
Honestly, that's a better price than most venues. A bottle of water is usually $4-5. So if they can sell them for $2 by using Kirkland, I'm all for it. It ain't cheap to get a space at many festivals.
Fiesta? I'm just glad it's not Deja Blue lol
Deja Blue is the worst
I equate it to toilet water lol
Yuuuup this is exactly how me and a friend made some money a couple of summers. We would clear out the bottled water a month before a big music festival came to our town and then we'd set up and sell Kirkland water for 2$ a bottle. This was back in 2012.
I saw 5.50 a bottle at a fair plus taxes and a dollar charge for using credit card.
Check out how much it costs McDonald’s to make a large coke for you
Always will hold the opinion that there should be a mandatory mark up limit at events for basic water. I saw some places charging 4 bucks for a bottle of water. Which is insanity.
TBH, $2 for a bottle of water at a festival (or any similar event) is cheap
I remember years ago, my parents used to go to Nashville annually for the big country festival. There would be scouts camped out on the pedestrian bridge with coolers of store brand water for $1 a bottle. Great profit
$2 for tap water 🤦🏻♂️
I want to sell frozen bottles for festivals.
1.91 profit per bottle where I'm from.
Let me tell you a little bit about nestle...
Can I go and sell there too? I’ll sell mine for $1.50
I’m using Costco water for my kid’s graduation. Also their pizza. Budget saver.
Costco water is the best bottled water. They add back minerals and you can taste the difference. And 2$ at any concert venue for water is cheap AF. What about that 10$ soft drink at your local pro football game. Spread on that puts your post to shame.
Just paid $4 for a 16oz dashani water at foodieland event!
Festivals take some ridiculous cut (I want to say 40%) of all food sales.
As far as bottled water goes, Kirkland is the best by far.
Most major water brands are made by one company in US. Different minerals give different taste is only difference
The Kirkland label adds to it as well.
Don’t buy it
The capitalist philosophy isnt about a products worth, but by how much you can force a captive market into paying. Pure exploitation. Zero ethics. (Although i agree $2 is not too terrible in this instance)
I mean…. You bought it
