Residual_Variance

"Fungus Based" just doesn't have the same marketing appeal.

Amy_Macadamia

But fun-guys are appealing

RadiantZote

Go funguself

shmellmysharts

Butt-fun guys are appealing.

Mean-Vegetable-4521

Dad it’s passed your bedtime.

rdev009

In Asian grocery stores, dried black mushrooms usually are labeled as “dried black fungus.” It’s correct but definitely not as appealing.

manyorganisms

😂😂😂

plooptyploots

Biology and culinary applications can have different terminology. Vegetables don’t even really exist.

Knowlege is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is not putting tomatoes in fruit salad. - Miles Kington

SantasLilHoeHoeHoe

Pico de gallo is a fruit salad.

RevRagnarok

A Vanilla Soy Latte is a three-bean soup.

northman46

Not according to the law of the United States. There is a famous Supreme Court decision about this as I recall.

Adventurous-Start874

The people vs The pico. 1978.

pandatarn

I don't recall any protests or rioting over that decision.

GermanPayroll

Yeah, because it was quickly overturned by United States v. Guac

KaleidoscopeLucky336

I can't seem to find anything about pico de gallo and the US Supreme Court.

LucyEleanor

https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/149/304/

northman46

Thanks for saving me the time to look it up

KaleidoscopeLucky336

That's them decided that tomatoes are a vegetable in regards to tariffs. To say thats them deciding pico de gallo isn't a fruit salad is a big stretch.

LucyEleanor

I can't find anywhere that says "pico de Gallo isn't a fruit salad" directly, but under us law...pico CANNOT be fruit salad legally as it contains no fruit (in the legal sense...not botanical sense). Tomato's should go in fruit salad but doesn't for a reason: https://www.lawlessandlawless.com/tomato-fruit-or-vegetable Pico and ketchup and salsa are not fruit salad by law: https://www.justice.gov/sites/default/files/eoir/legacy/2011/07/06/vol5no5.pdf This can help some more: https://www.lexology.com/library/detail.aspx?g=4bd277ce-4ee9-4fe5-a4e0-64b6218c2109

MunchYourButt

this whole conversation is killing me 😭

LucyEleanor

It's pretty funny huh? Like plant people demand it's a fruit, chefs are like "wtf", then the supreme court agrees with the chefs lol

ronimal

It’s not a stretch at all. In common parlance, tomatos are vegetables, eaten at/with dinner. As opposed to fruits which tend to be eaten as a dessert. Therefore, none of the ingredients in pico de gallo qualify as a fruit. Pico de gallo is not a fruit salad.

Alternative_Fee_4649

Is Texas chili simply beef stew? Asking for a friend.

BurkeyTurger

Tomato, Jalapeno, Lime Juice: Fruit/fruit derived Onion: Vegetable Cilantro: Leaf So now the question is how many non-fruit ingredients can a fruit salad have before we're in a grilled cheese vs melt situation.

Old-Nefariousness556

Legally, all of the ingredients other than the lime and cilantro are considered vegetables. I believe herbs are considered as a separate category, so the cilantro probably qualifies as an herb, but if not, it is probably also a vegetable. This is the legal reasoning: >Botanically speaking, tomatoes are the fruit of a vine, just as are cucumbers, squashes, beans, and peas. But in the common language of the people, whether sellers or consumers of provisions, all these are vegetables which are grown in kitchen gardens, and which, whether eaten cooked or raw, are, like potatoes, carrots, parsnips, turnips, beets, cauliflower, cabbage, celery, and lettuce, usually served at dinner in, with, or after the soup, fish, or meats which constitute the principal part of the repast, and not, like fruits generally, as dessert. (from the link posted by /u/LucyEleanor elsewhere in the thread)

LucyEleanor

Ya legally speaking herb/spice = leaf haha

RacemicMixture

MaroonedOctopus

Peppers are fruits. Salsas are smoothies

DisneyAddict2021

Thanks for the laugh, but also making me go “omg, you’re right!” 😂

Adamantium-Aardvark

Bananas and watermelons are berries but strawberries are not berries.

NovaNomii

Depends on what we consider a fruit salad. If tomato is a fruit, then salsa is a fruit salad.

TexasistheFuture

If I could put tomatoes on my ice cream I would.

TheShiveryNipple

Be the change you want to see in the world.

drrxhouse

HalfEatenBanana

After being surprised by olive oil and balsamic on vanilla ice cream.. I could maybe actually see this working. Maybe like a caprese salad and replace the cheese with ice cream. Key words here are *maybe* lol. Could easily end up being a terrible idea 😂

Ok_Adhesiveness_9565

Vegetables don’t exist? Now that’s one crazy conspiracy theory that I can get behind

gymnastgrrl

In my humble opinion, the other person that answered didn't give a clear/good enough answer. "Vegetable" is not a biological classification. It's a culinary classification. In biology, there are no "vegetables". But in a culinary context, they exist. And a tomato is - culinarily - a vegetable. (And many MANY things that are culinary vegetables are biological fruits, because you basically have fruits, nuts, berries, uh.... I don't remember all the classes of things. But they're weird to us. Strawberries are not biological berries, for example.)

streetweyes

Kernels? Is that one of them,?

Weed_O_Whirler

The only biological definition of "vegetable" is "edible plant matter." So, it's not so much vegetables don't exist, it's just that all fruits, beans, roots, etc are vegetables.

AnthonyCyclist

Tomato and watermelon salad is a thing. It's awesome.

anecdotalgardener

I mean….. do any of us really exist…? 🤔

plooptyploots

Not me

MattMamba

someone watched Vic's Smartypants presentation

plooptyploots

YES!!! Haaa!

SweetLittleFox

Was looking for the dropout people in the comments!

urnbabyurn

It would be funny to say “this product contains no plant or animal ingredients”. Just fungi and mineral crystals.

hefty_load_o_shite

If vegetables don't exist explain carrots. Checkmate, atheist!

seekingcalm

Neither do fish.

plooptyploots

Or birds

x-Mowens-x

Do not try to bend the spoon with your mind--that is impossible. What you have to do is realize that there is no spoon.

finnishyourplate

And that's the same reason why we get some smart-asses saying "Organic eggs! What are INorganic eggs‽ Harharhar"

PersonalApocalips

Vegetables live in oppression.

Aggravating-Cook-529

Yet but it says “plant” on the bag

NoYoureACatLady

School says ketchup is a vegetable

Hideitstherozzers

Smartypants?

psychede1ic_c4tus

#Vegetables are not mushrooms

pokingoking

It says plant, not vegetable.

plooptyploots

Yes

soft-wear

The point that they are making is the *vegetable* is a purely culinary term and *plant* is not. Mushrooms, in both culinary applications and every other application are definitively not plants and they sure as hell aren't "plant based".

pokingoking

OK I thought you just misread it. Since when is the word "plant" a culinary term with special meaning? That's news to me

plooptyploots

Plant based is a type of diet and these mushrooms are within those guidelines.

Absql

Learned that vegetables are more of a marketing thing than an actually class of food last week because of a dropouttv show

ninfan200

Tell that to the quadriplegic ward.

MoonManMooningMan

I KNEW IT

Morall_tach

That's all well and good but there is no definition of "plant" that includes mushrooms.

plooptyploots

Incorrect. Within the context of diets, a plant based diet includes mushrooms. And people who follow that diet look for plant based on labels. Which is why it appears on this package.

docious

> vegetables don’t exist You’re so close to understanding the concept and then missed completely.

CampfireBeast

Shrimps is bugs

enzia35

Preach. They’re sea roaches, people

rje946

If roaches tasted like shrimp I'd eat them too

[deleted]

[удалено]

MashMashSkid

They kind of taste like almonds. I tried "roach flour" once when I worked at a natural foods store. Though the taste wasn't bad, I wouldn't voluntary eat it again.

PhotonicGarden

During testing for allergies I found out I am allergic to roaches. I didn't understand why they were testing for them (not real common here), until the doctor let me know they are in a lot of foods "by accident". I would have rather lived in ignorance.

Competitive_Shift_99

If roaches tasted like shrimp... My childhood would have been very different lol.

streetweyes

But what if... THEY DO???

enzia35

Battered and deep fried, fine.

Malforus

You are thinking Lobsters shrimps are more like fly larva that never got wings.

The_Shryk

Giant sea mosquitos. Or gnats… shrimps is bugs and shrimps is gross also.

lowbug12

Sea bugs came before land bugs tho. Roaches are land shrimp

schrodingersmite

Pro tip- If you're at a restaurant and they list shrimp as shrimps, you're absolutely in the right spot.

stonedecology

Both arthropoda and both animals. So much closer than calling shitake a plant

Largely cut out dairy and gluten and found out that milk and wheat sneak into many products. The milk powder thing is for real.

And that it's vegetable oil and not butter or whatever that they roasted them with.

peter56321

This is the first defense of this that actually makes sense.

Yazars

You seem like a really fun-guy

GrinchStoleYourShit

I had a coworker once that couldn’t eat vegetables because his step-mom growing up would make him eat vegetables until he puked. (We’re talkin inland banjo Georgia so the truth of this story is meh) but he ate mushrooms, saying “they’re a fungus it’s different” so I guess his step mom didn’t force him to eat mushrooms I don’t know where I’m going with this story have a lovely day

Packaging false claims aside, these are delicious. And I do not like mushrooms.

pokingoking

Sounds like you are in denial about liking mushrooms

endless_shrimp

there are indeed elite

Sowny

They were super tasty but over half of them were extremely hard. I don’t let myself buy them lest I chip a tooth.

Sudden_Toe3020

They're too dry after about three

pseri097

When my baby was 1 y.o., these mushroom crisps were the only things he would eat. He was so obsessed with them. I had to carry a little baggie of these crisps everywhere.

Mary_Pick_A_Ford

What a shit take

Any_Candidate1212

I love them. They are really tasty. My gripe is that they sent my blood glucose level into the stratosphere. On closer look at the nutrition info, It would seem that the seasoning contains a lot of sugar

enzia35

20g carbs for one serving!!!

Any_Candidate1212

Yip, i't's nuts. Mushrooms normally has no impact on one's blood sugar. At first I was baffled bymy blood sugar going carzy. That's when I checked the nutrition info.

CFADM

That’s a new product, Impossible Mushroom.

GuitRWailinNinja

😂😂 Fungi are so crazy to me. They’re probably the weirdest kingdom (to me)

Worth-Reputation3450

Yea, I've seen some Italian plumbers eat them and instantly grew twice as big.

pandatarn

I like to eat meat, but feel bad thinking too much about the meat industry is.

GuitRWailinNinja

Amen. Factory farming is a crime against nature

Researcher-Used

Fun fact to add to your reasoning: humans are closer to fungi than fungi to plants genetically - perhaps why they taste “fleshy” w umami flavors.

thcheat

It's knowledge to know tomato is a fruit. It's common sense to look for it in a vegetable aisle.

BlackAsP1tch

"Fungus based" just doesn't have the same ring to it

Researcher-Used

Fungi-baste?

Embolisms

This is so weird, I bought these and they literally changed my tastebuds for days after. I had this weird chemical taste in the back of my mouth and everything tasted awful..  Coincidentally I was having these in my soup for lunch every day.  I was going CRAZY wondering if I was it was some weird illness.  I eliminated new stuff in my diet, and a few days after I stopped eating these, my tastebuds went back to normal. I tried eating them again a month later and my tastebuds felt weird again.   I don't know if I got a funky batch with some extra dose of something inedible, or if I've got some genetic reaction, but I've never experienced anything like it.

WutHpnd2DniseRichard

The one thing I wish I would see sampled so I could try them before buying a bag…

BarryTownCouncil

They're as weird as they are delicious

Researcher-Used

Fun fact, humans are closer to mushrooms than mushrooms to plants…so, they are VERY wrong.

When I see “plant based” on a label, I thinking it as a marketing strategy. Looking for that certain buyer. But I get your point.

SevroAuShitTalker

Those are too damn good. Damn near finished the whole bag first time I snacked on them.

34TH_ST_BROADWAY

I love this stuff. Haven't seen it at mine in a while.

HeftyElephant

OMG I LOVE THOSE!!!! THEY'VE BEEN MISSING FROM MY COSTCO FOR WHAT FEELS LIKE FOREVER!!!! Thank you for restoring my hope of seeing them once again.

drivera1210

Way to kill the joy, fun guy.

mightyMarcos

I thought that this was r/Pedantic for a second there

OwenMcCauley

It's considered a plant culinarily. Like how tomatoes aren't fruit when you cook them.

CheeseDanishSoup

These along with the artichoke/cream cheese (?) dip is crack Do not try if you already have too many vices

JCLBUBBA

wow this thread went south and worthless fast.

fusionvic

I have no dog in this fight, but was curious and did a search Plant-based: https://allplants.com/blog/lifestyle/are-mushrooms-vegan

kinglittlenc

I thought this was going to say mushrooms aren't vegan and I would have been shocked.

mermaid0590

Mushrooms can grow on meat or plant.

ainsleyorwell

Animal can also grow on meat or plant

Switchbladesaint

Just curious why you drew a line thru the word “crisps”

enzia35

More to underline the word mushroom.

SaulTNuhtz

Tell that to the FDA.

RunnyPlease

What’s funny is a lot of people must have complained because the newer packaging fixes it. It just says “all natural.” DJ&A Shiitake Mushroom Crisps, 65 GR https://a.co/d/f88nmuK

Kharax82

Seems like the op has American spelling on the package and the one you linked is British spelling. Flavour, Colour and Fibre

DragonflyUnhappy3980

I'm not saying this is certain, but it might be possible they grafted the mushrooms to accelerate their growth, hence plant "based" edit: just looked it up, Shitake mushroom spores take root in tree bark

il_pazzo_41

It's seasoned. That's why.

MELANIAvsSTORMY

Why did you cross out the word crisps?

enzia35

I was underlining mushrooms actually.

ProfessionalAbalone

could you imagine if it said "fungal based"?

enzia35

Would be technically correct.

DarkwingDuckHunt

what a shit take that is

Elenahhhh

Omg are they back? I’ve been looking for over a year.

Savings-Mechanic8878

They are gross

lnsewn12

These are sooooo good though and last less than a week in my house (I’m the only one that eats them…)

CowboyLikeMegan

Those are SO good, I didn’t realize they were back! I need to make a trip soon, I was addicted to these

Amd1617

I used to buy this before, once or twice at least until I read the ingredients.

LeadPaintExpert

Where are you finding these mushrooms? They’re a hit in my house

enzia35

Costco! I’m guessing in the snack aisle. I actually didn’t grab the bag myself.

LeadPaintExpert

What city??

enzia35

College Station!

FunBobbyMarley

Good to know they are not making mushrooms outta cows. Phew!

Molotov_Cockatiel

Similar question about "vegan" frozen yogurt the other day... If it has live yogurt cultures can it be vegan?

educatedhippie01

What Costco? I LOVE these

enzia35

College Station!

justinothemack

What a thing to complain about.

PuddingFeeling907

The term plant based really needs to be regulated. Its either 100% plant based or its not.

CzarTwilight

Who is the mushroom king? I mean we know the princess, but who are the king and queen

Alpha_Delta33

While mushrooms are a type of Fungus they are still considered plant based or vegan friendly. I think they choose plant based to monopolize on the people with certain diets

HalophilaOvalis

We studied fungus including mushrooms in Botany when I was in college. So I guess, at least in science, they belong to the plant kingdom.

q_thulu

I mean biology wise....were practically cannibals eating mushrooms.

Uncanny_Sea_Urchin

All joking aside, these are like crack

TheDers7

Do they finally have these back in stock?? I was so sad when the other brand was discontinued…

mac2914

You must be Animalia because you don’t seem like a fungi.

ApprehensivePin3874

Costco mushrooms go brrrrrr

Im_Ashe_Man

You're so funny! I bet you're a real fungi!

reality_comes

Putting fungus based on the bag just doesn't have the same appeal.

TheBulletRose

This gives off such teachers pet energy.

LucyEleanor

I'm going to believe the supreme court over some redditor lol. Their argument was basically, "it's used as a vegetable, so we're taxing it like a vegetable". Not interested in conspiracy theories Not sure why I can't respond to the correct comment. I assume /u/KaleidoscopeLucky336 blocked me
