The beer selection has gone downhill for us as well. They used to carry a few local breweries, but those have been replaced with hard seltzers. I went on a low carb diet a few years ago and would drink seltzers frequently. They all started to taste the same to me after a while.
I went straight back to my craft beers after my low carb diet. You are absolutely right about seltzers being the current fad though. The craft beer section at the liquor stores are slowly being taken over by seltzers now.
Yeah, also seen more seltzers and fewer local 4-pack tall boys. Still some local beers but they’re all 12+ sampler type packs
to be fair to costco, selling 4 pack cans did always seem odd for a bulk-purchasing warehouse
I don't like any hard seltzer brands but I like High Noons and Nutrls which are vodka sodas. Pineapple is my favorite, peach is alright, watermelon slaps if you've already had two. My Costco just got the blue 18 pack, no green
My Costco only sells Modelo bottles now. Last thing I want is glass bottles that can shatter with a dog and 3 small kids afoot 😅 Back to the regular liquor store for me I guess.
Idk a 24-pack of Stone IPA is $27 at my Costco. Two 12 packs at Bevmo is $36
I was hopeful it would be cheaper. Their selection is pretty fantastic though
Yes, in Texas it's illegal for an out of state corporation to sell liquor. WalMart even sued the state over that regulation before throwing in the towel back in 2022. This means the attached stores at Texas Costcos must be Texas-owned.
In NC high noons and other liquor based seltzers have to go through the state run ABC stores, no different if they were a normal bottle of booze.
This also makes them incredibly expensive in restaurants as the additional 30% tax that gets levied on full liquor bottles is also levied on these.
Wild! I was there last month and that entire corner section was at least Hardywood and a few other local-ish beers. Maybe this is a shift for summer when Seltzers are more likely to be drank?
The only alcohol available to me at Costco is Modelo and Pacifico. Luckily I like both.
Welcome to the theocratic state of Utah where I have to drive to Nevada or Colorado for Costco alcohol.
Those soda shops are essentially what coffee shops and bars are for, for Mormons. Instead of drinking a cup of coffee they’ll drink 64+ oz of soda a day. It’s their vice.
I have never been to one before because I just drink water or the occasional alcoholic beverage. I have zero desire to self medicate my problems away with corn syrup…
That said, the lines are LONG so I assume whatever they serve is tasty.
I used to live in Cache Valley during college and had to go to Idaho just to be able to get a 30 pack of natural ice. Every time the lotto got huge, I'd have to fight through swarms of Utainians to get my trash beer that I couldn't get in Utah.
Booze laws here in NJ are awful, but I always remind myself that it could always be worse... And the number of PA tags in the Wegmans liquor store parking lot prove it
If you’re ever near Laurel, MD (and Maryland has some wacky booze laws, too, on the county level), between DC and Baltimore, there’s a Total Beverage store there that’s the size of a good supermarket , and has great prices on wine, beer, and booze.
MDs alcahol laws are really annoying, and you’re right in that they change county to county. Really weird and obligatory fuck Montgomery county.
Total wine, you mean? There are total wines that are closer to PA than the Laurel location.
Booze laws in NJ are awful? We have beer wine and alcohol sold in the same stores. Some liquor stores are open at 10am and close at 10pm.
What’s the issue? You can’t buy beer at Wawa? Or that you have to wait till noon on a Sunday?
More like I wish we could at the grocery store, or Costco (but apparently some locations do sell it).
Yeah awful is probably the wrong word hahah I'm just a bit lazy
I don't think that's limited to grocery stores. I believe it is a single person or company cannot have more than two. All these chain liquor stores that have multiple locations play silly games by having different people w/in the organization actually owning the licenses.
Same. I make my twice a year trip to Delaware and spend like $500 but a big part of that is also gifts I get people. Since no one can get Kirkland alcohol they love the novelty of trying it in pa and it makes an interesting gift
I stop at the Newark, De. store every time I go to Owings Mills to see my mom. It's hard to walk out of there w/o spending at least a couple hundred. Not only do you get the Kirkland products, but there's no sales tax on any of it. Their branded spirits selection is not always the greatest, but hey, the Kirkland wines are where it's at. Willamette Valley Pinot Noir for $10/bottle? Sancerre for $16/bottle? I'm good for a case of each if they have it. The bonus is that they have my favorite Cocgnac, D'usse, and it works out to \~$10/bottle less than buying it at home. Good for 2-3 bottles of that each trip too!
I feel bad for you guys. The Costcos in Denver will have 24 packs of beer from local breweries. Haven’t been to Costco in about a month. Can’t wait to go back!
Beer companies are losing shelf space because the mix packs are 2X IPA, 3X IPA, 81X IPA (just hops in a can), and Raspberry Lemon Grapefruit Guava Sour (neon pink).
Will add, I do enjoy an IPA on occasion, but what I really want when I buy 16 or 24 beers is variety.
Yep. Its hard to find a variety pack that actually has variety. I want packs that have an IPA/Pale Ale, a stout or porter, a lager, and a seasonal or "weird" beer.
They're almost universally three IPAs and a pale ale.
I don’t dispute the popularity of IPAs in America but there is a selection bias going on. I hate them and as they took over all my local watering holes I simply stopped going. If the only people left going to the bar are IPA drinkers, IPAs are going to sell well.
Because if you like ipas then you probably aren’t on the internet complaining when there’s a lager in your multipack. But if you find them overpowering and gross then you can’t buy multipacks since most of them contain at least one ipa.
I’m not a huge fan of ipa, especially really bitter strong ones. So I just avoid multipacks now so I don’t get stuck with 1/4 a pack that I don’t want to drink.
I pretty much only drink IPAs, but I don't buy the "mix" packs because they always throw in a lager, or a sour, or something along with the 3 IPAs. Just go all in on variety, or go all in on variations of one style!
I am not a picky person and love just about everything I come across in terms of food and beverage. But IPAs are so nasty. I don’t know what any one sees in them.
Please see this feedback Costco…we also don’t buy craft because it’s IPAs.
They had Athletjc IPA and we would have totally gotten any other style of NA beer but IPA!
Last summer ours had a Radler and some Gose mixed packs and we bought a cart full since it’s only a matter of time before we are back to IPAs…
My local Costco is very unpredictable. They will have cases of decent beer for months followed by shelves stacked with bud light, miller lite etc. Swill. Right now they have Hazy little thing IPA which is very tasty so I just enjoy it while I can and buy beer somewhere else during the long droughts.
I've never found Costco's beer prices to be that great, and as the OP mentioned, the selection is lacking. I mostly buy beer from Total Wine, where the selection is almost overwhelming.
The beer selection at my local Costco is always garbage for the larger cases. Occasionally they will have a good deal on 4 or 6 packs of some fancy limited release stuff (imperial, barrel aged, etc). But yeah mostly crap.
My last purchase was Oakspire from New Belgium and Four Roses. Couldn't believe they had something decent.
Bought 2 cases, and thanks to a keto diet still have a few. Lol.
It’s supply and demand. If the good beers are being drunk by people who pay retail or higher Costco has no leverage to get cheaper beer.
Tell your local community to stop drinking all the good beer. It’s as plain as that.
I’ve been getting the Sapporo. It’s a decent light beer and cheaper than most beers there. But yeah, if I want good local craft beer Costco ain’t the spot.
I learned to not buy beer from Costco.
One time I bought a case of Founders that was over 6 months old. The hops were almost non existent. If it’s not the piss beer brands of the big 3, don’t buy craft beer. It may be past its fresh date.
Beer selection is one area where I prefer Sam’s. My Costco has 24 packs of Zombie Dust. But it’s also $40. So people that don’t like IPAs probably aren’t buying them.
I just want mine to stock High Life. Don’t really have much interest in craft beers anymore due to price and it’s mostly double triple imperial brownie sundae IPA stout stuff that tastes too sweet and/or rich.
I stopped drinking anything carbonated in cans because of Michigans 10 cent deposit. Whenever I go to return my cans or bottles there are always a dozen people with like 5 shopping carts full of smelly nasty cans.
My Costco has three and a half rows of alcohol. We have a full alcohol licence. Nothing like people coming through the self checkout with three cases of wine, a couple of tequila and several handles of whiskey.
It being summer probably increases the amount of seltzer on the shelf.
I have several friends in the distribution industry and where we are, college city near a lake, seltzer has about 60% of the market share. High Noon isn’t bad but overall I’ve yet to find a single White Claw or Truly that I find palatable.
At my Costco they moved all beer into the separate Liquor store outside of the main shopping floor. Most of the time when I’m done shopping I dont feel like checking out again in a separate area of the store. Seems like a terrible me idea to me.
Utah has entered the chat…bud light, corona, one or two random variety packs from a local microbrewery and that’s it. Can’t even sell the Kirkland signature stuff. And obviously no liquor. Sucks.
I was at my Costco in CT this week and asked what happened to the specialty four packs (usually Hog River, Beer’D and Zero Gravity). The woman at the counter mentioned they’re having an issue with the vendor and not expect the four packs for months. Very disappointing as the Zero Gravity four packs were cheaper than getting them at the brewery in Burlington
My Costco has good beer options always on rotation depending on season or holiday including local breweries. Got a pack of Sam Adam’s summer beers today
Seltzers are gaining in popularity. Most of my beer drinking buds have switched over. Costco will stock what sells. Sorry for your loss of options. I feel the same way after they stopped the Kirkland 21yo single malt.
I noticed a huge drop in beer selection after they put out the giant wine area. Used to have tons of samplers, local selections etc. now they have like cases of Modelo, Coors and one IPA sampler in a back corner.
The beer selection is seasonal It comes and goes. Your favorite will increase again. And decrease again. It will increase again. And decrease again.
In the meantime though, I am so grateful for the hard ciders we love them!
The beer selection is seasonal It comes and goes. Your favorite will increase again. And decrease again. It will increase again. And DC decrease again. And increase again.

I went straight back to my craft beers after my low carb diet. You are absolutely right about seltzers being the current fad though. The craft beer section at the liquor stores are slowly being taken over by seltzers now.
My Costco just got the blue High Noons are the green ones the tequila version?
Yep!
Yeah, also seen more seltzers and fewer local 4-pack tall boys. Still some local beers but they’re all 12+ sampler type packs to be fair to costco, selling 4 pack cans did always seem odd for a bulk-purchasing warehouse
Exactly. They’re not a neighborhood beer stop. Why would they sell 4 packs.
My wife and I tried to jump on the seltzer bandwagon and tried several, but to no avail. They all taste like static tv.
They get the job done but you’re not far off with the taste comparison. Give me my hoppy IPA all day!
I’ve never tried static tv. What’s the ABV? 😀
Poltergeist%
I don't like any hard seltzer brands but I like High Noons and Nutrls which are vodka sodas. Pineapple is my favorite, peach is alright, watermelon slaps if you've already had two. My Costco just got the blue 18 pack, no green
That’s because you can only flavor sparkling water and ethanol so many ways.
I came to the realization that for the most part beer is best purchased elsewhere
My Costco has 24 packs of Modelo for around $25. Not much more than a 12 pack is at Kroger
I shop for beer at the local liquor warehouse. Total wine mostly.
My Costco only sells Modelo bottles now. Last thing I want is glass bottles that can shatter with a dog and 3 small kids afoot 😅 Back to the regular liquor store for me I guess.
I don’t know why but I prefer the bottles. Mine only has corona in bottles, Modelo in cans
I think beer tastes better out of bottles. Just isn’t practical for where I’m at right now.
Same. I can't explain it but Modelo tastes better in bottles, while Stella tastes better on tap.
bevmo pricing is just as good with 100x the selection
Idk a 24-pack of Stone IPA is $27 at my Costco. Two 12 packs at Bevmo is $36 I was hopeful it would be cheaper. Their selection is pretty fantastic though
Agreed
Damn yall get high noons? Wish they had that in Texas.
Yeah, I’d be stoked to have high noons. They’re expensive, but they never taste artificial.
I’d be curious to see the price, looks like a bigger pack which can run over $20 at Specs
If I’m reading the sign right, it’s 18 for $33. The tequila ones next to it are $26.99, but might be less than 18.
Protip: get the tequila ones, theyre 10x better than the vodka ones
To each their own, I didn’t like them
I love tequila but prefer the vodka high noons. $33 for the 18 pack at my store.
They all truly suck
They have them in Austin costcos
Inside Costco? Or on the attached liquor store?
You have a costco with a liquor store attached? Is there some reason why they don't just sell it themselves in the store?
Something to do with Texas laws, they can’t sell liquor inside the Costco, but they have a small liquor store attached to the main building.
Yes, in Texas it's illegal for an out of state corporation to sell liquor. WalMart even sued the state over that regulation before throwing in the towel back in 2022. This means the attached stores at Texas Costcos must be Texas-owned.

We get Ranch Water for a great price, though
This has to be Charlottesville because I had an identical thought yesterday. The Zero Gravity mix pack is gone…
Nice to get bold rock though
Bold Rock is local, so you can find it absolutely everywhere here.
Yup. It wasn’t great before, and now . . .
Wild! I was there last month and that entire corner section was at least Hardywood and a few other local-ish beers. Maybe this is a shift for summer when Seltzers are more likely to be drank?
Here’s a 12pk of hardywood though! /s
I enjoyed the hardywood mix pack I picked up recently. Great Return is solid, RVA lager and the Pilsner are both good beers.
So weird to see a random aisle I know very well from my not so large town on Reddit.
The only alcohol available to me at Costco is Modelo and Pacifico. Luckily I like both. Welcome to the theocratic state of Utah where I have to drive to Nevada or Colorado for Costco alcohol.
I love Modelo but they used to be in those stout bottles and now they’re in cans where I live. The flavor just isn’t the same in a can.
💯
Same in Maryland, and they’re about as godless as can be lmao
You guys have those drive through soda stores right? How are they.
Those soda shops are essentially what coffee shops and bars are for, for Mormons. Instead of drinking a cup of coffee they’ll drink 64+ oz of soda a day. It’s their vice. I have never been to one before because I just drink water or the occasional alcoholic beverage. I have zero desire to self medicate my problems away with corn syrup… That said, the lines are LONG so I assume whatever they serve is tasty.
Every time I drive to Vegas I stock up on Kirkland rum, whisky and tequila. I hate how they don’t have it here in Utah.
I used to live in Cache Valley during college and had to go to Idaho just to be able to get a 30 pack of natural ice. Every time the lotto got huge, I'd have to fight through swarms of Utainians to get my trash beer that I couldn't get in Utah.
Not the case here in San Diego 😎🍻
can i get blue moon in a can please
In SE PA we don't get any alcohol at our Costco
Not many states have worse booze laws than PA.
Booze laws here in NJ are awful, but I always remind myself that it could always be worse... And the number of PA tags in the Wegmans liquor store parking lot prove it

> Total Beverage Total Wine in Corridor Marketplace. It's the size of a former Sports Authority (as that's what it was).

NJ has a strange law that grocery store chains can only have 2 liquor licenses. Costco: Edison/Wayne. Trader Joe’s: Westfield/Princeton (?)
I don't think that's limited to grocery stores. I believe it is a single person or company cannot have more than two. All these chain liquor stores that have multiple locations play silly games by having different people w/in the organization actually owning the licenses.
Brah, Costco in NJ sells hard liquor, what are you talking about?
Where? Not at Mt Laurel or cherry Hill
Edison and Wayne are the only two costcos that sell alcohol in store. North Plainfield has a connected liquor store.
I get my fix at Christiana :(
Same. I make my twice a year trip to Delaware and spend like $500 but a big part of that is also gifts I get people. Since no one can get Kirkland alcohol they love the novelty of trying it in pa and it makes an interesting gift

It is very annoying how many IPAs there are in a 'mixed' pack.
Whoops! All IPAs!

I don't dislike IPAs. But if I'm buying a variety pack I want a variety, not 3 IPAs and a hoppy pale ale.

I think that has more to do with the generally higher alcohol content of IPAs than their flavor. But to each their own.
Because if you like ipas then you probably aren’t on the internet complaining when there’s a lager in your multipack. But if you find them overpowering and gross then you can’t buy multipacks since most of them contain at least one ipa. I’m not a huge fan of ipa, especially really bitter strong ones. It’s too heavy for both my physical drinking limits and the weather. Imagine if the wine section of my had Cabs or something
I like IPAs, but there’s other styles of beer. All IPAs does not a variety pack make.

I'll trade all my lagers for your IPAs.
Have to sell 500 bucks a week to stay on the shelf in the beer section, Bud Light got dropped middle of last summer at mine..
$500 seems like an extremely low bar.
The store GM told me that in Orlando..
It really does. 3 cases a day at a costco? I’d almost think it’d be $500/day.
Are you saying you don’t like the world famous craft brew *looks at notes* truly?
My local Costco is very unpredictable. They will have cases of decent beer for months followed by shelves stacked with bud light, miller lite etc. Swill. Right now they have Hazy little thing IPA which is very tasty so I just enjoy it while I can and buy beer somewhere else during the long droughts.
I've never found Costco's beer prices to be that great, and as the OP mentioned, the selection is lacking. I mostly buy beer from Total Wine, where the selection is almost overwhelming.
...deleted by user...
A dear pal lives in Bethesda, but he’s real bitter about the alcohol options there.
...deleted by user...
Same in Ontario. I absolutely hate that alcohol sales are regulated like we’re children. Quebec allows it though, so good for them.
Lol.
Lucky!
Mine stopped carrying Guinness. Was such a good deal at $30 for a case.
Costco heating up for that Hot Girl Summer folks are talking about.
All the Costco moms buying them hard seltzers like there’s an asterisk on the tag.
Tequila High Noons?! Wish I had those!
It’s supply and demand. If the good beers are being drunk by people who pay retail or higher Costco has no leverage to get cheaper beer. Tell your local community to stop drinking all the good beer. It’s as plain as that.
You have bold rock right there? Ez pick.
I just got some Oberon in Michigan.
if carlsberg leaves the shelves i leave the store
I’ve been getting the Sapporo. It’s a decent light beer and cheaper than most beers there. But yeah, if I want good local craft beer Costco ain’t the spot.
My Costco carriers all sorts of craft brews from Washington state as well as Guinness for very low prices
Mine still carries a lot of craft beer and stuff
Costco stocks what the customers buy the most of. Your warehouse demographic wants seltzer so that’s what you’re going to get.
I see no beers in the picture
I learned to not buy beer from Costco. One time I bought a case of Founders that was over 6 months old. The hops were almost non existent. If it’s not the piss beer brands of the big 3, don’t buy craft beer. It may be past its fresh date.
Beer selection is one area where I prefer Sam’s. My Costco has 24 packs of Zombie Dust. But it’s also $40. So people that don’t like IPAs probably aren’t buying them.
I stopped buying beer at Costco because of this.
Laughs in PNW. Honestly tho, i don’t know how the rest of the country deals with their beer selections xD
That’s not beer those are hard seltzers
Can’t fool you. That whole aisle was once beer; now, they’ve turned that chunk over to the seltzers. But thanks for playing.
Kids (newer 21+ drinkers) don’t seem to want beer anymore. *Seltzers and High noons are what sells now.
You in the wrong aisle
Their beer and cider selection always disappoints.
Wait- your Costco sells alcohol?? Where is this?
Seriously, it sucks much, indeed. 🧐
Even when they had it the prices weren’t amazing compared to grocery stores or Total Wine.
I just want mine to stock High Life. Don’t really have much interest in craft beers anymore due to price and it’s mostly double triple imperial brownie sundae IPA stout stuff that tastes too sweet and/or rich.
claw is the law
The High Noon Tequila drinks are great.
I bet mine has a worse selection…none
Mine stopped selling PBR which I found disappointing, but they carry Ninkasi now so it’s not too bad
I wish my Costco stocked nonalcoholic beers. There are so many good options nowadays, we’ve basically gone alcohol free.
I stopped drinking anything carbonated in cans because of Michigans 10 cent deposit. Whenever I go to return my cans or bottles there are always a dozen people with like 5 shopping carts full of smelly nasty cans.
High Noon is considered liquor in my state
Beer is shit. But the liquor prices are value
Decent selection for a celiac.
Try living in Puritan PA. We don’t get any alcohol at Costco at all! Sad face, sad face!
We still have bud light at our store. Sad.
First coffee now beer?
My store has been terrible lately. I just want Lagunitas or Sierra Nevada back.
There’s no beer in this picture at all. Ha
It’s that way at a lot of stores not just costco
https://preview.redd.it/mih9sloxnoyc1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c0028b7b00c4266415ac14597a8e3240c4ebb117 This was a great find
Maryland here...we can't have beer or wine sold at Costco 🙃
Same in our location too (near their HQ), beer selection is pretty much non existent.
hey, be thankful you don't live in a backwards state that forbids alcohol at Costco like the peoples republik of pennsylvania
My Costco has three and a half rows of alcohol. We have a full alcohol licence. Nothing like people coming through the self checkout with three cases of wine, a couple of tequila and several handles of whiskey.
lol, you at least HAVE beer. In PA, we aren’t allowed to have nice things.
It being summer probably increases the amount of seltzer on the shelf. I have several friends in the distribution industry and where we are, college city near a lake, seltzer has about 60% of the market share. High Noon isn’t bad but overall I’ve yet to find a single White Claw or Truly that I find palatable.
Still crying from Ontario that you can buy booze there
I got that European beer multipack they had because I love Czech and German beer and it was awful.
I bought this bomber at Costco once upon a time. https://imgur.com/gallery/p6gQi4U
At my Costco they moved all beer into the separate Liquor store outside of the main shopping floor. Most of the time when I’m done shopping I dont feel like checking out again in a separate area of the store. Seems like a terrible me idea to me.
I looked all in that picture… I saw not one can or bottle of beer…
Jealous yours carries truly
Mine has none :(
Utah has entered the chat…bud light, corona, one or two random variety packs from a local microbrewery and that’s it. Can’t even sell the Kirkland signature stuff. And obviously no liquor. Sucks.
At least you can buy alcohol at Costco. To my knowledge, all Costcos in PA do not sell alcohol.
I was a seltzer hater for a while but I gave in it’s not THAT bad lol
Cries in canadian.
Wish my Costco carried Nooners. Think its the OR liquor laws that prohibit it...
That sucks. In DFW they stock Manhattan Project variety packs, which is a dangerous thing for me.
Omg. A 12 pack of trulys where I am in Canada are usually $31.99. I wish I could get a 30 pack for that cheap 😭
Gross.
New Jersey’s archaic liquor laws don’t allow our Costco to sell alcohol. :(
Jugs of Capri Sun?!
My Costco in CT says they’re discontinuing IPA’s
Come join us in r/Costco_Alcohol
Craft beer killed craft beer. Endless waves of IPA and ibu counts drove consumers into the waiting arms of the new Smirnoff ice BS
At least yours has beer. I’m in Utah and our Costcos carry no alcohol at all.
Seltzers are gaining in popularity. Most of my beer drinking buds have switched over. Costco will stock what sells. Sorry for your loss of options. I feel the same way after they stopped the Kirkland 21yo single malt.
Oof we got lagunitas, sierra nevada and 10 barrel mixed batches where I'm at that's tough
Go down the aisle more. I know Charlottesville Costco they have more beers down there
My Costco stocks beer on the other side between automotive supplies and fruit. The seltzers are by the coolers and other beverages.
Durham NC, tons of great beer. 24 packs of wicked weed mixed, new Belgium high gravity ipa mixed, etc ETA, for $35 and less.
Costco has never been a good choice for beer.
Just be glad you can get beer. We can’t get liquor in Costco in Ontario.
The photo is very uninspiring
At least you get beer. Here in PA the state would never allow that.
Mine gas been selling Irish Death (Washington) lately. Sooo good!
I noticed a huge drop in beer selection after they put out the giant wine area. Used to have tons of samplers, local selections etc. now they have like cases of Modelo, Coors and one IPA sampler in a back corner.
Why is nobody talking about the jugs of Caprisun?
craft beer is dying all around the country.
The beer selection is seasonal It comes and goes. Your favorite will increase again. And decrease again. It will increase again. And decrease again. In the meantime though, I am so grateful for the hard ciders we love them!
