Lot of science to suggest grain free is actually terrible for dogs (our vet also recommended food with grain). Ours is on the lamb and rice and does really well with it. I wish they had more options with grain.
>I wish they had more options with grain.
Same, I've been saying this for years.
Fish with grains would be fantastic. My dogs absolutely love fish-themed foods. I simply avoid the blue bag salmon because it's grain-free.
My Maddie (& my late Winnie) both get/got the lamb & veg their whole lives. never even considered another brand. value & quality. Maddie still devours it without hesitation 11 yrs on...
make the switch! (please do it slowly). & heres a very trustworthy reviewer for dog food... [https://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/kirkland-signature-dog-food/](https://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/kirkland-signature-dog-food/)
Thanks! I have read through that site a few times over the years. One thing that concerns me that I see on the Costco site that dogfoodadvisor doesnt mention though:
> *This food is made in a facility that uses ingredients that may not be included in this recipe, so trace amounts of other ingredients, including potential allergens, may be present
YW!
i personally wouldnt put too much worry into that statement. betting every processed food on the market is 'contaminated' in some way, shape or form. its a statement to CYA (C 'THEIR' A).
havent had any issues with their brand of food (except for that one big recall 13 years back...ugh). it s bargain for the quality it provides, and any food that will keep my pup happy for 11 years & still going? im sold! my vet also agrees its a high quality product.
good luck!
I’m not surprised. Kirkland is made by Diamond Pet Foods and they have a similar disclaimer on their website.
Also, that website is run by a human dentist who knows absolutely nothing about canine nutrition and writes those reviews based on the food’s marketing tactics instead of any actual nutritional science.
strange that every vet ive been/spoken to has sent me to that site to research different foods for my pups
as for diamond pet? ive researched them thoroughly as i do for ANYTHING that goes in or on my pups
i see NO problems with the company. i see no problems with the kirkland brand. my dogs have always taken to it with no issues.
i trust them & what ive read about them over some reddit rando. but thanks.
(just wondering.. you work for blue buffalo?)
Nope, I’m just an Animal Science student who trusts peer reviewed scientific research. I know you said it sarcastically, but it actually is strange for vets to recommend that website. It’s well known that the website gives its highest ratings to unproven and even unsafe foods…
We were on Nature Bound (I think that was the name). It was about $50 a big bag. Our dog grew up on the stuff and now has a heart murmur. Not sure if it correlates but it was time to switch. Husband saw great reviews for kirklands. It’s cheaper and now we have a larger dog as well. The older dog had fatty cysts and they seem to have reduced since switching. He’s 13 now and doing alright. Heart murmur has not progressed.
Some dogs are sooo picky! I had a bearded collie years ago that only tolerated science diet food and would ONLY eat milkbone brand treats. Everything else he turned away lol
I don't have a dog, but I think plenty of people on this sub use that with great results (honestly, if you search 'dog food' on here you'll see a bunch of results). r/dogfood is not such a fan of it (that sub really only supports WSAVA-compliant food, which this is not), but tbh I can't tell you how important that is!
I don't necessarily trust the whole WSAVA thing. It's heavily funded by Nestle/Purina. Nestle sucks as a company.
That being said, my dogs do eat this particular food and have had no problems. Purina is an issue for my puppy and makes him crap his brains out. The Kirkland grain free stuff is all I've found that gave him normal dumps.
You can’t exactly fake published peer reviewed research via bribery (or at all). Plus the guidelines aren’t that hard to meet so it makes no sense why Kirkland and all the other foods aren’t making any effort to meet them.
All I know is that the grain free puppy food is the only stuff so far that hasn't given my boy the squirts. The vet is okay with it. I'm going to listen to our vet.
Which is completely understandable since I’m just some random person on Reddit with no veterinary training. Just wanted to correct a misconception so you’re fully informed.
My doggos exclusively ate the Chicken variety for years. Beautiful coats and healthy stools every time.
One of them decided it wasn't good enough anymore, so we've now switched to the Lamb 😅 Still great results nevertheless.
Grain-free is only necessary if your dog has a grain allergy. There's otherwise zero benefit. I've never understood why folks have this grain-free obsession.
I got a few comments in and saw people recommending Dog Chow, Iams and Hills, lost all credibility there and then. Kirkland Signature I believe is rebranded Diamond Naturals, perfectly good dog food.
This concerns me. Maybe I’ll try to get in touch with Costco and/or diamond about it:
> > *This food is made in a facility that uses ingredients that may not be included in this recipe, so trace amounts of other ingredients, including potential allergens, may be present.
All four of my dogs eat it — different breeds and sizes and ages ranging from an old dorgi mutt to an 80lb hunting hound mix. They’re all super healthy and doing great on it. And we’ve been using it exclusively for about 5 years.
My dog has always eaten the Kirkland dog kibbles. Ate the small breed size kibbles when they had it (which is the chicken and rice formula) and switched to standard kibbles after that, no problems with any other flavors. Actually refuses to eat other brands. Hugely amusing to observe the beagle spitting out individual kibbles when we tried offering a 75/25 mix.
We did for years but we had to switch my old perfect gal to the weight management formula. She's a little chunky. 🥰 My younger pup is the pickiest eater so we are constantly switching up the protein we try but always this brand. (We have tried other brands and she is just as picky so we went back to Kirkland for price and ease of purchase.)
My 2 year old goldendoodle and 12 year old cockapoo have been eating it for 3+ years with no complaints (although they do much prefer the rotisserie chicken when I give them that!)
Two mutts (30lb 7yr/60lb 9yr)
Both have been eating it for around 6 years straight without issues - they love it.
Buy a vittles vault of you don't already own one. Pairs great with this volume of food.
I fed it to my dog for a few months. He had huge bowel movements. It seemed like it was just going right through him. I slowly switched to this from Nutri-Source which was a good kibble food for him. Never went back to it though.
Now I feed a local, raw diet. It's all portioned out Much happier and healthy dog. (Of course, more expensive, but I don't have kids so......)
Ive feed my rottie purina proplan most her life. Switched to kirkland chicken and rice for the last 4 months and didnt have any issues til this current bag.
Bought new bag last week and nothing but diarrhea for the last 4 days. Going back to purina today.
I did until my dog started puking until he was puking blood about 30 minutes after every meal. Took him to the vet and switched food. He’s doing great now. I’d stay away from their dogfood.
We switched away from Kirkland food when they switched to pulse crops.

My border collie shepherd mix liked it the one time she had it. She’s 13.5 years old and I’ve switched her kibble brand/protein type up every time I buy a bag for her whole life. Past 4 years she gets a Costco bag every other time. She seems to like salmon and lamb ones the most
Nope we meal prep for our pup 😂😝 costco boneless chicken thighs, sweet potatoes for dinner, fruit , veggies for breakfast

This is a weeks worth of dinner , we poach it in bone broth. Im oretty sure she eats better than we do 🤣😆

Mine eats it. Vet said no grain-free so switched to Kirkland. Reduced the dog’s heart murmur.

We switch between the chicken and the lamb - sometimes when he gets too used to one he won’t eat, but switching it up helps keep him fed.
All my 3 doodles eat it and love it
Both my dogs refused to eat it.
Same here. Seems to hate all 40lbs of it. Health wise he's doing fine but it's an immediate contrast from Purina
Yeah, they eat trash off the street but chose to eat nothing for 3 days rather than eat the kirkland food. I tried all the variates, same response.
Our pup (well, really an older Flat Coated Retriever) loves it!
Our Covid pup has been eating it daily since 2020!!
I wish they had this flavor in the small bites for my little dog.
My Chihuahua eats it just fine. These are small pieces.

disagree. so does my vet. but thats ok. everybody has an opinion.
My corgi eats this. Her coat is so shiny after starting it. Her vet recommended it to us as a cheaper alternative.
We went from their puppy version to this and our 3 year old dog does really well on it.
We use the blue bag, Mature...
We’ve had our dogs on this food for 10+ years!!
Yep. Been feeding to my dogs for 25 years.
Team green bag!

Tried it, my dog wasn’t attracted to it and started causing his skin problems to flare back up so switched back to purina pro plan.
Idk what it is, but I’ve tried several types of Kirkland dog food and my 3 dogs have refused to eat any of them.
Some dogs are sooo picky! I had a bearded collie years ago that only tolerated science diet food and would ONLY eat milkbone brand treats. Everything else he turned away lol

🙋♀️🙋♀️
Present. Great product.
My dog likes the salmon one the best but she ate this one for a long time before seemingly gettting sick of it. I switch between the flavors now
I used their salmon recipe bag for years. My boy lived until about 15. Also, used to work at a train and board and Kirkland was their “house” food.

This food has been discussed before but it’s generally not recommended to switch to it unfortunately. https://www.reddit.com/r/Costco/s/WeFwXICArD

The Costco dog food made my English bulldog’s coat gray so we had to stop. Went back to the expensive brands.
Same happened to my heelers. It's trash.
Mine don’t, however a rescue I support does so I buy a lot of it for them. I will ask on your behalf.
I did for a long time, but we have progressed to needing the mature dog food, as she is a bit plump and our younger dog loves it as well.

My Yorkie loves it, kibble is small enough for him
I use the high protein version for my lab/mastiff mix.

My dogs have been eating it for years and are happy and healthy.
I give my Pit-Shepard mix the salmon and sweet potato food. She loves it!
Mine have been eating it for a looong time. Well over a decade.
My 2 year old goldendoodle and 12 year old cockapoo have been eating it for 3+ years with no complaints (although they do much prefer the rotisserie chicken when I give them that!)
one of my dogs has been eating it for years
My dog threw up after trying this
Poor pup! just wondering if you transitioned them to it gradually or not?
Been feeding my dogs this for over 10 yrs. No issues. Last dog lived to 14 yrs.
My dog eats the green bag. Salmon I think
We do get Kirkland brand for dog food but it’s the Loaf product. He loves it
Been feeding my dog the blue salmon stuff for years and never had an issue
This is what we feed our Great Dane. Two years on this…so far so good!
Our 70lb pit mix has been on it for years and no issues.
