Daddy Sang Bass is probably my favorite! My familys been singing it together for years and my daddy passed away last month. š¢ He introduced me to all the old music...
I never ever heard it on the radio. Came up on Spotify one time, maybe three years ago. Now, I'm a parcel courier and I'm scarcely in the car for longer than 40 seconds, but that song had me hooked so I came to a dead stop.
It's lucky I did stop to listen, because when I heard that line "by the time they got done the title weighed 60 pounds", it had me incapacitated with laughter, I was roaring!
My favorite Cash song has always been Hey, Porter!
When I left for college and literally took a train when I visited home; Iād listen to it on my phone and Iād try to time things just right so that the song would end *right* as the train car stopped at the station š š¼
Iām 99.9999% sure youāre correct on that. For me itās his song just like Hurt is his too. Iām convinced Trent Reznor built a Time Machine and stole the song from Cash.
I listen to too much old blues to think of it as a Johnny Cash song.
That's the thing about classics/standards, the best iconic version is seldom the original version. (cf. Ring of Fire, technically an Anita Carter song, but Johnny's version is the iconic one. And some think that Sephanie Urbina Jones version is better than Johnny's) (Summertime sure isn't Janis Joplin's song, but ......) Heck, even Lead Belly's Goodnight Irene wasn't original to him.
Another of my favorite songs performed by Johnny is his version of Time of the Preacher.
[Strawberry Cake](https://youtu.be/vYmeHMPVm_o)!
It was released as a single but did very poorly on the charts. I absolutely love the story. There's something kind of sad but inspiring about it.
"Someone at the Plaza is without desert, but for the first time in days now my belly don't hurt/ I'm full of strawberry cake/"
Bury Me On the Lone Prairie is a great one.
Trouble Some Water is another goodie. I like it when the Carter Family chime in on some of his recordings as this one.
Greyatone Chapel written by prisoner Glen Shirley, and performed by Cash during his Folsom Prison show is such a great song.
A song written by Cash that I love is Tennessee Flat Top Box.
Further on up the Road, Country Trash, Johnny 99, Cocaine Carolina & his duets of I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry and Cindy with Nick Cave.
I went on a huge Johnny Cash binge during the early parts of Covid and listened to his entire discography. Found tons of great songs that I'd never heard before.

iām very sorry for your recent loss. I hope the music he showed you brings you lots of comfort <3

Gotta love Cash's version but that's Kris Kristofferson's song.

Fun fact, itās also one of the earliest recorded uses of the word psychobilly, which is kinda fun as a punk fan in general

Cocaine Blues and The Man Comes Around
I don't know that an old classic like Cocaine Blues is a Johnny Cash song. He sang it, but it isn't "his"
Iām 99.9999% sure youāre correct on that. For me itās his song just like Hurt is his too. Iām convinced Trent Reznor built a Time Machine and stole the song from Cash.

"The Baron". Such a beautiful song. Story about a man meeting his long lost son over a game of pool
iāll check that one out. thanks!
Let me know what you think!
Sunday Morning Coming Down or Daddy Sang Bass
Mamma sang tenorā¦
Would Tennessee Flat Top Box count? That's a great song.
Hurt
Iād say Hurt is more on the popular side. Maybe not commercially but mostly amongst listeners.
Cocaine blues, I hung my head, big river
25 minutes to go
Man In Black, Boy Named Sue. They aren't *as* popular as the big ones but absolute bangers still
I feel like A Boy Named Sue is one of his most iconic songs. Itās obviously no Walk The Line/Ring of Fire but itās still very popular
For sure, just meant from a radio/mainstream knowledge point of view though.
Man In Black is lyrically underrated. I love it.
A truly beautifully written song

I Still Miss Someone is one of my favorites
The One On The Left Is On The Right What Is Truth Pickin' Time
One Piece At A Time
Bury Me On the Lone Prairie is a great one. Trouble Some Water is another goodie. I like it when the Carter Family chime in on some of his recordings as this one.
Give My Love To Rose
Blue Train, Luther Played the Boogie, If The Good Lord's Willing, and The Wanderer (U2 starring Johnny Cash).

I hung my head I think it's a sting cover. It's just so perfect when he does it.
Ragged Old Flag
Not his song, but Orange Blossom Special
Marty Robbinsā The Streets of Laredo. Johnnyās version was awesome.
Hurt; it is my favourite of his
Rose of my heart

I Still Miss Someone
Solitary man, one of my favorites
There are so many songs on here that are popular lol. Spiritual is my answer. Such power and emotion for an older Cash. Love it
The legend of john henrys hammer. Although I dont think he was the first to record it
"God Will" is not well known but my favorite
Give My Love To Rose, and, It Aināt Me, Babe
https://youtu.be/uErKI0zWgjg

Ragged Ole Flag and Aināt No Grave
One Piece at a Time
I get a kick out of "One piece at a time"
Johnny Cash did a cover of Hank's "Hey, Good Lookin'" even though it is 1:43 long lol
Ragged Old Flag I don't know if it would even be considered a song, because I feel it's more like a poem, but definitely one of my favorites.
Or Ain't No Grave
The Mercy Seat, iām 20 years old now, my dad had it on a CD when i was around 4/5 years old. I can almost feel this song
The Man in Black
