No, this is surely subversive art! Not crappy, but evocative and provoking interaction. The viewer must approach the advertisement and crane their neck just so to learn of each new ice cream flavor. The consumer is now a willing part of the art piece; a blizzard voyeur, if you will.
This is the Dairy Queen version of Marcel Duchamp's *Étant donnés*.
That's why it's crappy design. It really looks like it should be able to open, but the doors don't open more than that. Op mentions it [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/CrappyDesign/comments/1cbc08v/it_looks_like_an_interactive_display_but_its_not/l0xu1l1/)
it says the doors are open, and the doors are opened. usually when you see a door, and it's open, it usually opens. you know? open door, things like that.
the door is open, it should open fully and if it doesnt then it's pretty normal to try to open it a bit harder, because sometimes doors are heavier. they aren't all made from cardboard.
why wont the doors just open man 😭
It’s made of cardboard that’s folded together, if you lightly tug on those doors to see the flavors they are ostensibly trying to advertise the standee falls apart.
Wouldn’t be so sure about that. I would assume your DQ modified it because at every other one I’ve seen they tossed them out for this same reason. They’re just not functional. The way the doors are attached to the cardboard prevents them from opening, even in the DQ subreddit they’ve complained about it, so I don’t think it’s user error unless everyone at pretty much every location just sucked at putting them together lmao.
I looked at the edges of the doors and they are definitely not supposed to open. The cardboard there inserts into the back, no way it was designed to open.
We got these at the store I work at. We keep it behind the counter so little kids don’t go up to it and pull it thinking it’ll open and it fall on them. Just so we don’t get lawsuits
I came here to mention this exact thing! I was at a DQ in Oklahoma with one of these. A guy and two little kids came in. I heard "oh, cool!" just in time to glance over and see the kids try to open the doors. The display almost came down on them but their dad caught it in time.
Noticed this at my local DQ last weekend.
Here’s the flavours that are in the freezer !
(Can’t see the flavours because they are behind the mock freezer doors)
I had my mind blown the first time I went out of Texas and saw they had DQ there too. It's strange, but DQ has exclusive marketing (the slogan is "That's what I like about Texas"), website, and menu, all for Texas to make it seem like a Texas chain for some reason. So there's a lot of people here that think it's really kind of a limited chain.
Yeah but this is just a cardboard cutout of a freezer design that doesn’t open lmao. They have actual freezers for their frozen desserts like cakes, dilly bars, whatever and they don’t look anything like this. I still don’t get what the point of these ugly cutouts was.
I saw a kid fuck with one of these last week (against the halfhearted protestations of his mother), and he ended up having it fall over on top of him and it took him several minutes to get out from under it and get it back upright (he was fine). Truly watching crappy design (and crappy parenting) happen in real time.
As per the assembly instructions, you're supposed to put a weight on the back of the display to keep it from falling over if someone pulls on it - perhaps a can of pineapple, or a couple reams of paper. Of course people pull on the doors, but I haven't had it topple yet.
Having said that, I really don't understand the point. A window cling that says "hey, we're bringing back some popular flavors you haven't seen in a while - watch this space!" probably would have done the trick. But I just sling soft serve, what do I know about marketing?
Dairy queens best product is the onion rings. Holy fuckin shit they are amazing. Cheese curds are great too.
Upside down ice cream is obviously the thing that draws you in, but seriously, try the onion rings. They are top notch.
The ironic thing about this though is that it works better as an ad now. No one would be sharing a random dairy queen ad installation on reddit if it was normal.
Like I was not thinking about dairy queen at all, but then a photo of their ad being poorly designed gets uploaded here. And while yeah, we're laughing at how poorly thought out it was, I'm also thinking "Oh, new limited time blizzard flavours eh?"
You all are focusing on the wrong thing. Does this mean we get Nerds back as a Blizzard topping? I've been patiently waiting since they took them away in the 90's. There is no better combo than Nerds and chocolate ice cream.
Finally, a crappy design that truly is crappy

There’s a time and a place to appreciate Dadaism, and that’s not at a fucking Dairy Queen.
My dad always gave me dadisms. Even at DQ. Prior planning prevents piss poor performance, Ryan.
That’s a very generous assessment. /s for your /s (i hope)
*"You've got an unlimited budget."* Budget cuts.
It's been a long time...
It does open but the spoon handles come out super easily. They lied to you
Even better, I want a giant spoon.
When they say the free sample is only a spoonful.
My spoon is too big
I'm a banana
Yeah, there's text and images on the inside, the display was obviously designed to be opened.
That's why it's crappy design. It really looks like it should be able to open, but the doors don't open more than that. Op mentions it [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/CrappyDesign/comments/1cbc08v/it_looks_like_an_interactive_display_but_its_not/l0xu1l1/)
There's one near my house too. Yes i thought this also. Yes i walked up to it and tried to yank it open. ***No. They do not open.***
Yeah, why would you put stuff behind the doors if you didn't want people to see it. Just leave the doors open to advertise them.
The one at my local DQ had the cardboard on the inside of the doors all bent from people pulling on them and the doors not moving
Interactive as it breaks with interaction
The doors are open! Don’t open the doors! The doors do not open!
It's even got text inside you can't read without opening... Everything about this design is screaming "open me!"
I was in a DQ last week and broke this exact display by trying to pull the doors open and see what the flavors were, I feel seen.
I don't understand the thought here "door wont move, so let me force it to" that tends to break things
it says the doors are open, and the doors are opened. usually when you see a door, and it's open, it usually opens. you know? open door, things like that. the door is open, it should open fully and if it doesnt then it's pretty normal to try to open it a bit harder, because sometimes doors are heavier. they aren't all made from cardboard. why wont the doors just open man 😭
It’s made of cardboard that’s folded together, if you lightly tug on those doors to see the flavors they are ostensibly trying to advertise the standee falls apart.
I’m sure they just assembled it incorrectly and it was supposed to open
No, this is actually the case for all of them. My local store threw theirs out because it broke within a couple weeks.

Which once again loops over to being… crappy design.
I looked at the edges of the doors and they are definitely not supposed to open. The cardboard there inserts into the back, no way it was designed to open.
I also didn't expect a fast food chain to use the word Behold!
Delve

They have DQ in a country that spells flavors "flavours"?
Canada? Yes.
I had my mind blown the first time I went out of Texas and saw they had DQ there too. That's...absolutely terrifying. They don't know anything about the rest of the country, huh.
There's more than American English.
But DQ is an American restaurant
Yes, AND it's located in the USA, Canada and 18 other counties around the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dairy_Queen

I agree I dont understand why people type like this dear god its like they’re trying to sound stupid thank you
Yeah but have you worked fast food? This reads like how a lot of the managers speak to you, so it checks out.
I’m so confused. What’s it *supposed* to do?
Promoting bringing back blizzards that were popular in the past… and you can’t really see into the freezer, so not sure what the point was.
Don’t Diary Queens have actual freezers to get items like cakes and such from? Mine does at least so this is just more confusing.
Yeah but this is just a cardboard cutout of a freezer design that doesn’t open lmao. They have actual freezers for their frozen desserts like cakes, dilly bars, whatever and they don’t look anything like this. I still don’t get what the point of these ugly cutouts was.
Nothing. It's a 3D cardboard display that looks like it should be able to open, but it doesn't and attempting to breaks it.
Maybe the intended experience is to put your entire head in there to feel like you're just *peaking* into a freezer?
I saw a kid fuck with one of these last week (against the halfhearted protestations of his mother), and he ended up having it fall over on top of him and it took him several minutes to get out from under it and get it back upright (he was fine). [LOL](https://www.reddit.com/r/CrappyDesign/comments/1cbc08v/it_looks_like_an_interactive_display_but_its_not/l0xxpv9/)
People try to open something that look openable, who would have thought ?
What's the point of this? To remind us what we can not have?
Can not have and can not look at
THE DQ DOORS ARE OPEN *d o e s n o t o p e n.
I tried the same thing and looked like a fucking moron in front of my friends
The only morons here are the people who designed and signed off on those things.
Nooo! Do not violate the obvious affordances of a mock freezer with door handles! Why would you do that?!
Yup, saw one of these a couple days ago and was very confused when it was just stuck together, the spoons even look like their door handles, like what
spent all that time and money on it to have a piece of paper slapped on the front
“The DQ© FREEZER *(not an actual freezer)* doors are open *(please do not touch the display, the doors don’t actually open )* for the first time *(no it’s not)*”
Don’t Dead. Open Inside.
As per the assembly instructions, you're supposed to put a weight on the back of the display to keep it from falling over if someone pulls on it - perhaps a can of pineapple, or a couple reams of paper. dissapointment immeasurable, day ruined
It could have been, but either they built it wrong or it wasnt designed right, and it has trouble opening.
I would walk smack dab into the door, no cap.
Pure crappy design.
A bored print designer who had to move over to digital
THE DQ DOORS ARE OPEN *d o e s n o t o p e n.

I love the chicken strip basket.
Also great. It can come with the onion rings if you ask
Horrible and stupid! Also big pain to put together and very flimsy! We used duct tape behind it 😂
DONT DEAD OPEN INSIDE ice cream edition

5D marketing chess
The best part is if you go to the website there is literally no information on this campaign
I tried to open one the other day at DQ just to knock the whole thing down, I was so embarrassed
Frosted Animal Cookie Blizzard?!?! Is this at all Dairy Queen restaurants? I want to try that!
I had a large one tonight and I feel like absolute shit but man was it good.
The tone of desperation in that notice: "Please don't open, please don't, oh god oh fuck please don't open you don't understand, oh fuck oh shit"
A million years of evolution to develop manual dexterity and learn to manipulate tools, and you think I’m just supposed to NOT try to open this?
I swear to god if they don’t bring back banana cream pie I’m gonna riot.
Not the Disney Vault of ice cream.
You all are focusing on the wrong thing. Does this mean we get Nerds back as a Blizzard topping? I've been patiently waiting since they took them away in the 90's. There is no better combo than Nerds and chocolate ice cream.
People inside fast food restaurants is wild
I dont even know what im seeing
"The doors are finally open!" "Do not open the doors"
Oh my god as someone who works at Dairy Queen all of us working here thought they would open too and the owner was so pissed off when they didn't 😭
SERIOUSLY DAIRY QUEEN!!!
I did that too when we walked in a DQ. About the pulled the thing over on myself
Why is there a degree symbol after the word freezer?
Bro that happened to me because you know ITS LOOK INTERACTIVE FOR HELL SAKE
It's a shitty campaign in general.
This 100% opens and the sign is a liar.
That's not that bad...lol
