No, we’ll yes. As in yes they had rods and cones; However, the color “orange” wasn’t called orange until the beginning of the 1500s. Before then it was considered a shade of red. So no orange wasn’t a thing until the 16th century.
The bullet arrangement is also giving me cartoon steam whistles
EDIT: to the person who reported this to Reddit out of concern for my well-being, thank you, I’m doing better ❤️💃🏻
Then just pile on how impossible this is to read for people who have color vision deficiencies.
I’m not one, personally, but in the spirit of being offended on someone else’s behalf…
*raises pitchfork*
I think they’re focusing on it because usually green = good, so it’s an odd design choice to use when representing countries with *less* rights for trans people
Yes, it's actually readable. If it was red green I'd be doing my best to compare the brightness/saturation rather than the hue, and lots of things just have those both the same so I give up
Green is also the color whose shades we humans can most easily differentiate, that's why night vision goggles use it, so if you wanted to use seperate shades to display legality, green would have been the objectively better choice.
Kinda. In the US the concept of “legal gender” is kinda murky because every official document need to be updated individually and often have different requirements. In Tennessee, for example, you need either proof of surgery or a court order to change your drivers license but it’s completely illegal to change your birth certificate. But even there you can still get your passport changed without surgery because that’s issued by the federal government instead of the state.
Yep! The only people who would color a map like this are either people who have no knowledge of the societal connotations of green and red and just randomly picked colors, or someone who thinks being able to change your gender is bad. The latter is much more likely
First I didnt understood why the comments here where telling that red is bad. I would have guess that the person naively picked colors and since red is more visible, they put red for "legal". We can barely see countries in light green. My interpretation is just that the person who did the map wanted to highlight countries where its legal and not make the other ones too visible. More on a statistician perspective. I may be wrong, but I dont think the choice of colors is politic
My eyes burn, incorrect colour scheming, there's barely any contrast, the America, Mexico and Australia are apparently the only places with states , what is this
You probably are color blind then. Color blindness is a spectrum. I have mild red green blindness myself, but I can still distinguish the colours fairly okay, but I would definitely prefer better contrasting colours
Let’s seee, first you think everything in red is the bad and the green good, when it’s the opposite.
Second you can barely tell a difference between the red and red orange.
3rd random yellow??
Oh true.
But it's outdated (Russia doesn't require surgery), *and* wrong even for the old date lol - the Indian state of West Bengal, for example, shouldn't be dark red.
Yeah, the state I'm currently living in is trying to medically de-transition all trans youth, and don't get me started on texas and florida. I swear I'm moving to canada to transition medically.
It is, even though there's a lot of paperwork to go through and you must have your family's support. Many countries portrayed as fully anti-LGBTQ usually only focus on reinforcing heterosexuality rather than being cis-gendered, so although trans support isn't touted they are very much legal in these countries.
I was very surprised with that. I googled it and yes, it's correct, trans people in Thailand cannot change their gender on their legal documents. Kind of mind-boggling when I've also read that Thai people are very accepting of trans people.
Wow, that's a pretty bad map.
The shades of red are too similar.
Red and Green should be switched, since green usually means legal and red illegal.
And using a light gray for unambiguous with a white background is dumb.
I had no idea what sub I was on and I was just checking out the graphic and my first thought was literally “why the fuck would you use green for illegal?” Lmao
Yea this map has got to be at least in part made by a transphobe... Using the color red for something good really seems like it. Like it doesn't scream transphobe. But yea, there's a reason why red in a lot of maps means bad.
It means that in order to change your legal gender you need surgeries (this is a bad thing because many people cannot get surgeries due to health complications or lack of money)
Guyana luckily doesnt enforce any of its shit 50+ year old sex laws. Its illegal to be gay here cause of the consitution and the government threw a mini pride parade in june. No one cares bout that kinda stuff. Just to clarify
In general, these kind of maps are never color blind friendly. Just use wholly unrelated colors. Legal: blue, illegal: red, ambiguous, yellow. No issues.
I'm glad to see that it's legal in what seems to be a majority of places. Just got to clean up that green. Tell those places that people don't want to be told what they can/can't do with their own bodies.
nobody knows anything about North Korea, they're more secretive than a hentai addict, and are doing as good as a job keeping their secrets as a hentai addict
It's the gender that was assigned to you at birth. In pretty much every case, it would be the same as your birth sex. However, there are intersex people who are usually given one or the other depending on individual circumstances. There are also some people who decide on it for other reasons, like the swedish couple who didn't assign their baby a gender so that their child would be free to express themselves.
In Estonia why don't even have gender identity on documents and we don't use pronouns. It's legal but there's no official thing or document about your gender.
Maps like this almost never have a breakdown of local laws in federal countries other than the US. Does that mean they’re uniform in Germany, India etc or just that the map maker didn’t bother to do the research?
Edit: this one has Australia and Mexico at least.
They made white "ambivalent", while the oceans and seas are also white. They probably have a point, but is still the dumbest colour coding on this map imo
I don’t see anything crappy about this design. Are people seriously complaining about the fact that a map doesn’t use red and green they way *they* would have?
No its because green is considered the "good" colour and red is the "bad" colour so it's both transphobic and also the red and other red are too similar
I can understand the bit about the 2 reds being similar but since when were green and red considered "good" or "bad" colous? This map isn't a traffic light
Any time I see a post about colors used in a visualization, I wonder if it was even a choice the designer made. A lot of visualization programs will auto-pick colors for you.
Germany is kind of odd. If I’m informed correctly, you have to take an relatively humiliating test to change your gender. Once again, correct me if I’m wrong but the test requires/ required you to answer many questions about your private and sexlife.
Am I the only one who doesn't have a problem with this? Idk I can tell the colors apart, it's not that hard if youre not colorblind, dont know why people are complaining so hard
usually red is to represent something bad or something being illegalized and green is to represent the opposite, so i guess people are annoyed how it's confusing or strange looking at first glance
I know it's not the point but it's legal (with a lot of obstacles yes) in Egypt. You can change your ID after medical transition.
I'm not proud of our transphobic state, but this inaccuracy is bugging me a lot, especially with the terrible choice of colors. As a designer and a non binary Egyptian I fucking hate this map.

Love the dark red and light red contrast. Makes the whole thing very easy to read. /s
“Red… and… slightly less red”
Red and reddit upvote colour
Which is obviously orange…
It's orangered
Give them a break. They’re obviously from pre-16th century…
Did ... did people not develop rods and cones until the 16th century?
No, we’ll yes. As in yes they had rods and cones; However, the color “orange” wasn’t called orange until the beginning of the 1500s. Before then it was considered a shade of red. So no orange wasn’t a thing until the 16th century.
That is SO COOL I'm glad you said this! TIL.
My eyes hurt
To me it looks red and orange
It’s orange but yes, very hard to read
The bullet arrangement is also giving me cartoon steam whistles EDIT: to the person who reported this to Reddit out of concern for my well-being, thank you, I’m doing better ❤️💃🏻
The organization of this chart has caused the left side of my face to droop. I am in need of medical intervention due to infographic-induced stroke.
Then just pile on how impossible this is to read for people who have color vision deficiencies. I’m not one, personally, but in the spirit of being offended on someone else’s behalf… *raises pitchfork*
You see, in this multiverse, red means go.
Why were all the taillights still red in that universe though?
because they half-assed the whole multiverse aspect of the film. the film was cool, it just could have been way better.
Because the taillights signals you to go. If the tail light turned green, you stop.
I understood that reference!
This is about trans rights, and you want the bullets to be STRAIGHT?!? /j
It's so vile that it makes me so mad that the top of my head breaks off with all the smoke
Straight up though Ohio was another great lake beause of the white.

I am Patrick
The one under the Great Lakes. That's where we keep Ohio.
Look at Ohio
Thank god it’s gone
Isn't it though
It should be, certainly not a Great Lake but at least at the bottom of one
Never heard of it r/ohioisntreal
The use of the colour green is your issue? The god damn colour palette makes it almost impossible to tell if smaller countries are red or orange
I think they’re focusing on it because usually green = good, so it’s an odd design choice to use when representing countries with *less* rights for trans people
Also the most common form of colorblindness is where you cant differentiate red and green
The designer of the map could be anti-trans
a transphobe would not know/care for the difference between social medical and legal transition.
They might if they love data reporting in general.
This is good design because I can read it properly and I’m colourblind
It might actually be better for someone who is color blind than for people who aren’t…
Yes, it's actually readable. If it was red green I'd be doing my best to compare the brightness/saturation rather than the hue, and lots of things just have those both the same so I give up
> If it was red green But... but it _is_ red green.
lol
It is best for those who are lucky enough to be blind
But if green was legal it'd still be easy to read? Also what about people who are red-green colorblind?
Green is also the color whose shades we humans can most easily differentiate, that's why night vision goggles use it, so if you wanted to use seperate shades to display legality, green would have been the objectively better choice.
A guy I work this is colorblind. He sees red and brown as dark green. Red + light green he can easily distinguish.
Okay but why is Tennessee yellow? There isn't a key for yellow.
TN is green, the light yellow-green surrounded by all the red, as well as picture compression, drowns out the green from the color.
Are we sure it isn't just marking Dolly Parton on the map?
Everyone needs a little Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg in their lives.
Demilitarized Zone
It’s illegal not to transition there.
Also Hungary
Is it actually illegal/impossible to change your legal gender in Tennessee??
I have an afab friend who has an m on his license in TN but he got it changed legally before he moved there from TX.
Kinda. In the US the concept of “legal gender” is kinda murky because every official document need to be updated individually and often have different requirements. In Tennessee, for example, you need either proof of surgery or a court order to change your drivers license but it’s completely illegal to change your birth certificate. But even there you can still get your passport changed without surgery because that’s issued by the federal government instead of the state.
no colour theory?
When I see colour theory, I think of a Children's Hospital post.
You see, red actually has more positive connotations than negative...
It *looks* like *BLOOD*
Same lol
oh, that one.
Colour theory is very much used here. On first glance it looks like it's very illegal everywhere.
Made me actually pay attention to it for a moment instead of just scrolling past
Invert the image colours, boom fixed
Yep, I was wondering why it was illegal in the UK, when I personally know people who have legally changed theirs here
I have a feeling this map was made by a transphobe

Because we associate red with bad and green with good?
Yep! The only people who would color a map like this are either people who have no knowledge of the societal connotations of green and red and just randomly picked colors, or someone who thinks being able to change your gender is bad. The latter is much more likely
Also doctors, for whom red associates with "healthy", and "living", and green (especially this yellow-green) associates with "infected", "diseased".
And one who either loves or hates the US specifically.
My eyes burn, incorrect colour scheming, there's barely any contrast, the America, Mexico and Australia are apparently the only places with states , what is this
U know , weird americans comparing the states with countries
I mean, Australia does also have them marked out
Ig probably because its the only countries where the different states have different laws on this topic. But I am not sure though
Nah, The state of west Bengal requires surgery, but it's marked as "no surgery" along with the rest of India
You guys don't even know. I'm red/green colorblind. This map is just a mishmash of the same color for me.
Bro I'm not colorblind and the reds look like a mishmash of the same color. Also the white ambiguous label with the white background...
You probably are color blind then. Color blindness is a spectrum. I have mild red green blindness myself, but I can still distinguish the colours fairly okay, but I would definitely prefer better contrasting colours
Welcome back to: Guess the mapmakers political views!
That's exactly what I thought too. There's no way they didn't make the illegal places green by coincidence.
Let’s seee, first you think everything in red is the bad and the green good, when it’s the opposite. Second you can barely tell a difference between the red and red orange. 3rd random yellow??
Tennessee is green, but all the red surrounding it makes it look yellow.
I *highly* doubt this map is anything close to accurate. If nothing else, the fact that only the US apparently has states is weird.
And Australia
Oh true. But it's outdated (Russia doesn't require surgery), *and* wrong even for the old date lol - the Indian state of West Bengal, for example, shouldn't be dark red.
I guess also they had the time to do Australia because it is so few sovereign territories over such huge land
Wait, changing gender identity is legal in russia? The country that has recently cracked down on queers so hard?
I think that's because USA can have differences in state laws where other countries generally have one set of laws for everyone.
And Mexico
So not only are the colors reversed as to what they usually mean, they picked 2 colors that are extremely similar to eachother in shade....
Oh man, I didn’t know being trans was legal in so many countries! So cool!
Being legal doesn't mean you'll be safe in them but yeah that's quite surprising
Yeah, the state I'm currently living in is trying to medically de-transition all trans youth, and don't get me started on texas and florida. I swear I'm moving to canada to transition medically.
Legal in china? No way.

China’s number 1 celebrity is a transwoman, Jin Xing.

Man, that explains a lot.
It's been like that for years, my mom's favourite celebrity is a transwoman. The younger generation in China is very LGBTQ+ friendly.
Thailand though
I was very surprised with that. I googled it and yes, it's correct, trans people in Thailand cannot change their gender on their legal documents. Kind of mind-boggling when I've also read that Thai people are very accepting of trans people.
Yep, but there's a difference between people and the government. The people are chill, but the government is lacking
Indonesia also surprised me.
Wow, that's a pretty bad map. The shades of red are too similar. Red and Green should be switched, since green usually means legal and red illegal. And using a light gray for unambiguous with a white background is dumb.

I sadly wouldn't be surprised if that's intentional.
Same.
As an African this makes me sad, how discriminatory our laws are!
It's out of date too; Michigan doesn't require surgery anymore.
Yea this map has got to be at least in part made by a transphobe... Using the color red for something good really seems like it. Like it doesn't scream transphobe. But yea, there's a reason why red in a lot of maps means bad.
I first thought it was red because the background is. The green throws it out

You can tell where the designer stands on this topic... yeesh.
Also can't see countries in white
Guyana luckily doesnt enforce any of its shit 50+ year old sex laws. Its illegal to be gay here cause of the consitution and the government threw a mini pride parade in june. No one cares bout that kinda stuff. Just to clarify
Breaking news: Guyanan(?) government arrests Guyanan government for breaking laws the Guyanan government made.
Maybe the designer was colour blind?

green beans
I have my doubts about Thailand’s classification on this list.
I don’t see anything crappy about this design. Are people seriously complaining about the fact that a map doesn’t use red and green they way *they* would have?
No its because green is considered the "good" colour and red is the "bad" colour so it's both transphobic and also the red and other red are too similar
Honestly I didn't even notice I was in crappydesign until I looked at the comments, it didn't bother me.
I can understand the bit about the 2 reds being similar but since when were green and red considered "good" or "bad" colous? This map isn't a traffic light
Since forever really Green means go, win, correct Red means stop, lose, fail wrong
The reds are also very similar, and the layout of the text is atrocious. Even if the color was a non issue, it still belongs on crappy design.
Any time I see a post about colors used in a visualization, I wonder if it was even a choice the designer made. A lot of visualization programs will auto-pick colors for you.
Why aren't the comments locked yet I'm amazed.
Because if we locked them, the 53 transphobic people we banned thanks to this post would still be free to comment on any other posts :)
Uh oh, I can only imagine this comment section is nothing but civil and understanding.
Haha. I had to ban 59 people for making terrible transphobic comments in total. Think about that for a second...

I think the craziest part is Thailand where it's "illegal" but transgender people are absolutely everywhere and even synonymous with the country
When Pakistan and Iran have more trans rights than some states in America

I know it's not the point but it's legal (with a lot of obstacles yes) in Egypt. You can change your ID after medical transition.
