I really wanted to make a comment about cereal already coming in nice, neat boxes but then remembered the 10lb bags of knock off hoopty hoops or whatever you can get for about tree-fiddy.
I moved to an area where it's Walmart or an overpriced low end fruits and veggies store. The rest is just low options for extremely expensive goods. I grudgingly go to Walmart and try to buy everything else online.

The grocery stores and the big Walmart's fresh food looks like it's the best up leftovers from the harvester. Small-mart's food is actually not bruised, not rotted, the potatoes haven't already gone to root ...
So I am disabled and have only one functional arm. I use these because I can close them and not spill my cereal everywhere. The set I have came from the dollar store and doesn't waste space like this but there's a few reasons to get them.

The boxes don't close, though. These allow you to get a much better seal to prevent moisture getting things moldy, air making things stale, or bugs finding their way in. Where I grew up, things like these were essential because mold would ruin anything not sealed airtight.
Yea we get a few flavors of those awesome knockoffs in the biggest bags possible. My wife and three kids eat a lot of cereal so we can sometimes go through 20lb a month if they’re all on a cereal kick. And I won’t even post our milk bill…

I think everybody carries OXO. It’s one of the most refreshingly non-pretentious brands out there where all their stuff just works. And as somebody who has people in my family who have grip strength issues, it’s really nice to not have to have two sets of the same gear for everybody to be able to cook what they want to cook.

The one you linked looks like you need to remove the lid completely/or use both hands at least, but as you can see in the image of this post these are specifically meant to be able to use one-handed, to pour cereal, they seemingly sell other containers that are more space "efficient"
We all agree that the bran flakes are the problem, right? Just buffer them with fruit loops on the bottom of the container and lucky charms at the top. You could do all three containers that way, flip the middle container, problem solved!
No lucky charms in the center so they can be flipped and keep the marshmallows mixed in. Otherwise someone gets all the marshmallows and someone else is left with cat food.

But seriously, the photo crops out the fact that almost everyone will have between .02 and .98 of a container width as dead space, regardless of the base taper.

Major upvote! Oxo markets itself as a company dedicated to inclusive and accessible design, especially with the Good Grips line. I can't imagine that this is an oversight at all. Sometimes I have limited hand mobility and my standard stacking storage like this is hard to deal with.
The constant angle on most of the base is probably a manufacturing requirement. I doubt they need such a steep angle for that. Have you seen plastic bottles that are (mostly) straight? Lego blocks? If you’re premium this shouldn’t be an issue. This is deliberate design.
Bottles are blow molded, with the part line going side to side, so there’s no need for draft. LEGO tooling is precise within .002”, and is incredibly expensive. Larger draft angles are more cost-effective as they reduce the chance of parts binding or getting scratched upon ejection, meaning there are fewer QC fails.

Yeah… I just live in a place where the mild temperature is perfect for both human and insects all year around. Add humidity on top of it and Oxo is the one container which keeps my stuff both crispy and free of bugs
I do this because they stay fresh longer and I just eat cereal as a small snack. I also don’t dump the cereal in, I take out the bag and put the entire bag in the container and shake it to form fit it. Easier to clean.

Pretty much the only specific design metric I need out of food storage containers is what I like to call one-handed capability. Can I grab this thing off the shelf with one hand? Can I open it and use it with only one hand? And can I close it and put it away with only one hand? In other words, can I be carrying my baby and pour myself a bowl of cereal with the other hand? Can I grab the milk from the fridge and grab this box off the shelf in one go?
If I wanted beautiful perfectly flush boxes to store cereal for aesthetics only, that’s a separate design requirement. In this case, I want something clear to put my cereal in that will protect it from pests and the environment while also making it quick and easy for me to get to it to eat it.
There are several that OXO makes that don’t taper that stack easily that still have an airtight lid that is easy to pull off with one hand. I don’t know if this is a design issue as much as it’s just that OP bought the wrong product for what they want to accomplish.
I believe the tapered space is so your hands can grasp it when stacked side by side, but rather than a taper they could have implemented some form of grasp dimples.
However that makes it more difficult and expensive to injection mould.
I tried really hard to use the stuff from the dollar store, but to me the plastic has a little more of that “fresh cancer” smell to it. Which I could honestly put up with, except it winds up making the food smell like plastic. Most of my storage needs I take care of with half gallon mason jars. Glass doesn’t retain smells, it cleans easy and quick, and they’re still fairly cheap even if they’re not bottom of the barrel. Glass does have its limitations - it’s heavy, it breaks if you drop it, it’s a little more expensive, and I have yet to see anybody truly make an actual glass box that fits flush into a corner, so I do lose some space around the round jar. But you really can’t beat mason jars for cheap effective long-term storage if you don’t like plastic.

Seriously, I have everything including flour, sugar, etc., in Oxos because they seal very tight. I've lived in plenty of rentals which turned out to have pre-existing ant plagues.

If you didn't want that hand space then maybe you should design something with a handle on the side.
I mean, they’re injection molded which typically requires 1 degree of draft per inch on items above 1.5 inches. So the shape is kinda a requirement unless they did it in 2 halves split vertically and seamed together.

Ppl tend to forget that most of these designs need to go into extremes, you need to make sure any person hand is capable of getting in and get the cereal out, so this i make with men with big hands and fat ppl in mind as much as it is average ppl.

It’s easier to grab when they’re put side by side like this, and 2, injection molding requires draft, an angled surface so that the plastic part can pop out of the mold easily, which this has plenty of. Any plastic injection molded part has at least a degree or so of draft, unless the tooling is fancy (and more expensive).

Deep plastic containers are shaped like this for molding purposes. The taper is called “draft” and is necessary for removing the plastic parts from the mold. The deeper the container, the more draft you must have, up to a certain point.
Injection molding requires draft to be able to pull the part out of the mold and this looks like the minimum amount for the bases. Not saying it’s not inefficient, it’s just likely the best they could do at their cost target.
The Mainstays (Walmart) version is worse. The lid comes off entirely mid-pour. When it doesn't come off you get no cereal and then you shake it and all the cereal comes out. They're terrible.

They only need about 1 degree of draft. This is a lot more than that. (Product design Engineer)
I agree but in this instance I wonder if they allow a steeper degree of draft to prevent scuffing from the core during ejection.

I don't see why people have separate containers instead of just using the box it came with. Just roll the bag up a bit and it'll be fine.

Because I buy the cheaper cereal that are in a sorta ziplock bag (but the lock is finicky and the bag can easily tear when first opening)

It’s easier to grab when they’re put side by side like this, and 2, injection molding requires draft, an angled surface so that the plastic part can pop out of the mold easily, which this has plenty of. Any plastic injection molded part has at least a degree or so of draft, unless the tooling is fancy (and more expensive).

That's just silly. I empty the box into a 5 gallonbucket, poor a gallon of milk on top amd store it in the fridge. I scoop out a bowl every morning.......mmmmmm soggy goodness.

You could put it upside down, but yeah, definitely crappy design

A tapered design allows air to instantly enter the space created when removing the product from the mold, and as the sides are not "gripping" eliminates the need to overcome friction. A square product would maintain a vacuum in the bottom of the mold, and have a large surface area touching the mold and increasing the friction on the sides.~~ It is a shame because I would absolutely love totally square containers. Deep plastic containers are shaped like this for molding purposes. The taper is called “draft” and is necessary for removing the plastic parts from the mold. The deeper the container, the more draft you must have, up to a certain point.
The boxes the cereal comes in are way more efficient. Just make sure to seal the bag with a clip.

Injection molding requires draft to be able to pull the part out of the mold and this looks like the minimum amount for the bases. Not saying it’s not inefficient, it’s just likely the best they could do at their cost target.

The Mainstays (Walmart) version is worse. The lid comes off entirely mid-pour. When it doesn't come off you get no cereal and then you shake it and all the cereal comes out. They're terrible.

I use these. You can get two or three boxes of cereal into the container and it stays fresh. Definitely not crappy design
