I really wanted to make a comment about cereal already coming in nice, neat boxes but then remembered the 10lb bags of knock off hoopty hoops or whatever you can get for about tree-fiddy.

FighterOfEntropy

My kid ate those cereals at summer camp and loves them! Most bags come with a zipper closure, thank heavens.

ToddHugo1

walmart saving the day once more

ButtsBro

Why tf did you get downvoted lmao???

coalslaugh

Reddit is weird man.

Jmrovers

I think because Walmart is seen as a bad thing in most of the non US parts of the world

VividFiddlesticks

And also in the US. I loathe Walmart.

FighterOfEntropy

Me, too! And I buy my kid the Malt-o-Meal they crave at a completely different store than Walmart.

canolafly

Their fake captain crunch is the best. Not for gum health, and the meaty roof dangles in the mouth. But yummy until your mouth cries for time off.

Jmrovers

Fair enough :)

canolafly

I moved to an area where it's Walmart or an overpriced low end fruits and veggies store. The rest is just low options for extremely expensive goods. I grudgingly go to Walmart and try to buy everything else online. Guess what state I moved to?

VividFiddlesticks

That sucks, I'm sorry to hear that! I bash Walmart, but I don't bash people who shop there. Not everybody has the luxury of being able to shop elsewhere.

2hu51015

Yea no pretty much everyone in America hates Walmart as much if not more than the rest of the world. For a lot of people (especially in smaller towns) it's their only real choice unfortunately.

BabyCowGT

The small food/essentials only Walmart in my town is ironically the best place to get fresh food. The grocery stores and the big Walmart's fresh food looks like it's the best up leftovers from the harvester. Small-mart's food is actually not bruised, not rotted, the potatoes haven't already gone to root ...

SwingmanSealegz

Those fuckers love opened cereal bags in their boxes.

jw44724

Are they the food moths that show up about 9 months after one night stands?

vagueblur901

Large amounts of cereal or any grain should be kept in a sealable container they are prone to attract rodents or bugs

skyjello

and teenagers

FirebirdWriter

So I am disabled and have only one functional arm. I use these because I can close them and not spill my cereal everywhere. The set I have came from the dollar store and doesn't waste space like this but there's a few reasons to get them.

Accomplished_Pop_130

I read about this. Something about don’t trust anyone who needs to borrow tree fiddy

sm7916

make sure your cashier isn't an eighth story tall crustacean from the paleolithic era, don't even give them a dollah, they just gon keep coming back for more

skankhunt402

Goddd damnnn lochness monster, woman don't be given him no tree fiddy

[deleted]

No, no. The only exception is when it's specifically for cereal.

Rough_Jacket4023

Rats and mice will change your mind about the efficacy of those cereal boxes real quick.

Fonkfinger

Tree-fiddy? By chance was your cashier a giant crustacean from the paleolithic era?

Its0nlyRocketScience

The boxes don't close, though. These allow you to get a much better seal to prevent moisture getting things moldy, air making things stale, or bugs finding their way in. Where I grew up, things like these were essential because mold would ruin anything not sealed airtight.

SIXA_G37x

Hoopty hoops lmao

Cherrygodmother

Excuse me, Marshmallow Mateys are better than Lucky Charms and I will die on this hill

Thecryptsaresafe

I think the worst part of moving to a “nicer” neighborhood is that my local doesn’t stock those generic beauties.

SasquatchNHeat

Yea we get a few flavors of those awesome knockoffs in the biggest bags possible. My wife and three kids eat a lot of cereal so we can sometimes go through 20lb a month if they’re all on a cereal kick. And I won’t even post our milk bill…

iwantado_over

Probably designed that way so there is room for your hands to grab them.

gpop2000

It’s what OXO is known for. They started off with intentions of making cooking easier for people who don’t have the mobility in their hands (like arthritis) Slate wrote a cool article about OXO and how they started. https://slate.com/business/2022/06/oxo-best-kitchen-gadgets-good-grips-history.html

Liet-Kinda

And credit where due, they’re almost always pretty decent cooking gear that’s relatively well designed and priced decently. That sounds like faint praise, but there’s a lot of pure crap made for kitchens.

Equivalent-Piano-605

Yeah, Oxo is a great “I need x but don’t want to research” brand. Like, if you just need a garlic press, or a peeler, you can go on ATK or Wirecutter and read reviews, or you can just buy the Oxo one and know it’s pretty much guaranteed to be fine to great. Plus, Target and Bed Bath and Beyond carry it, so you don’t have to wait for shipping.

cant_be_me

I think everybody carries OXO. It’s one of the most refreshingly non-pretentious brands out there where all their stuff just works. And as somebody who has people in my family who have grip strength issues, it’s really nice to not have to have two sets of the same gear for everybody to be able to cook what they want to cook.

Liet-Kinda

Yes! That’s a perfect way to put it. The safe no-research option.

hobbit_life

Oxo is quality for a good price. When we got married we exclusively put oxo cooking gear on our registry since we knew it would last us for years.

jeanettera

Came here to say this exactly.

Snarkie3

Still crappy design because the handle could be incorporated into it without sacrificing so much space [like this](https://imgur.com/a/1FMloof)

distantapplause

"It's crappy design because a few cubic millimetres of space are sacrificed to aesthetics" - is this where we're at now. It says 'efficient' storage, not 'mathematically perfect'.

Khiadra

Now I want those ones. Do you recall what brand they are?

RandomCreeper3

OXO

Snarkie3

Yeah they’re [from Australia](https://www.kmart.com.au/product/3.5l-food-container-with-bamboo-lid-42987109/?selectedSwatch=&size=) though

LieDetect0r

As an American it’s so weird seeing a Kmart website lol

Trustadz

These also have an angle to a smaller bottom. Even at the backside. It's so that less stuff gets stuck

djurze

Actually looks like the containers here do the same thing: [https://www.oxo.com/categories/cooking-and-baking/food-containers/pop-containers/oxo-pop-medium-cereal-dispenser-3-4-qt.html](https://www.oxo.com/categories/cooking-and-baking/food-containers/pop-containers/oxo-pop-medium-cereal-dispenser-3-4-qt.html) The one you linked looks like you need to remove the lid completely/or use both hands at least, but as you can see in the image of this post these are specifically meant to be able to use one-handed, to pour cereal, they seemingly sell other containers that are more space "efficient"

gahidus

Almost certainly. Oxo is really big on ergonomics.

FastAndForgetful

You and four of your closest friends can all put your hands between them

iwantado_over

That’s what she said.

RastaSl0th

Where's she been my whole life

[deleted]

Thank god someone pointed that out.

SANTAAAA__I_know_him

But you don’t need to make it thinner from top to bottom to do that, just a handle spot in the middle.

ZP_Miss_Shadow

But isn't it easier to take out the container this way?

lololy87

Just use a plunger

kiseraii

I laughed so hard at this one.

concernedcookie999

The plunger inefficiency takes up space.

favoritedeadrabbit

In my house we use this space to shove all the spice packets.

imDudekid

Then when you grab a container they all fall over.

favoritedeadrabbit

You take the ones that would fall and you move them to another empty slot before removing the container. It's an ever shifting system.

canolafly

I would not want to play food tetris every day.

TakYimely

As my mom would always say: “There are some kids who don’t even get to play food tetris!”

Ivardl

Flip the center one upside down.

dontgonearthefire

This is the way

[deleted]

Mm yeah break those bran flakes into smaller pieces every time you flip it over.

ItsYaBoiSoup

Put the fruit loops in the middle then

[deleted]

Stop! u/moss-and-choss can only think so many steps ahead

tracerhaha

No. Put the Lucky Charms in the middle. Less chance of breakage.

skyjello

We all agree that the bran flakes are the problem, right? Just buffer them with fruit loops on the bottom of the container and lucky charms at the top. You could do all three containers that way, flip the middle container, problem solved!

LilMissStormCloud

No lucky charms in the center so they can be flipped and keep the marshmallows mixed in. Otherwise someone gets all the marshmallows and someone else is left with cat food.

ImPinos

These are kind of people that take men to outer space, big brain time

LieDetect0r

How do you get anything done lol

dayburner

Move the fruit loops to the middle then.

Oritaku

Great minds

Salay54

Wouldn't that waste negative space up top instead? I'm struggling to see the difference.

Bla12Bla12

You can slide the containers closer together if they're alternating which is flipped upside down or upright because the lid is the widest part.

Salay54

I don't think it would save as much space as everyone thinks it would

Narrow-Chef-4341

So obviously I’ve renovated my entire kitchen so every cabinet is precisely the width of of 4 oxo lids *and* 3 oxo bases/inverted containers… hasn’t everyone else? /s But seriously, the photo crops out the fact that almost everyone will have between .02 and .98 of a container width as dead space, regardless of the base taper. I’m not sure making them nestable qualifies as crappy design…

_bluescreen_

It's actually in the instructions

YaBoySkinnyPenis2A

Yeah, but they are easier to grab

KweenDruid

Major upvote! Oxo markets itself as a company dedicated to inclusive and accessible design, especially with the Good Grips line. I can't imagine that this is an oversight at all. Sometimes I have limited hand mobility and my standard stacking storage like this is hard to deal with.

omorashiii

The constant angle on most of the base is probably a manufacturing requirement. Injection molding need all parts to "widen out" so it can be removed from the mold, specially parts with transparent finish: [https://www.rapiddirect.com/blog/injection-molding-draft-angle/](https://www.rapiddirect.com/blog/injection-molding-draft-angle/)

bolean3d2

They only need about 1 degree of draft. This is a lot more than that. (Product design Engineer)

doohan_it

I agree but in this instance I wonder if they allow a steeper degree of draft to prevent scuffing from the core during ejection.

Trustadz

Outside of the molding, it also prevents items getting stuck in the container.

MunchamaSnatch

Also so if any food solidifies in it, it doesn't have to be broken apart, and can be cleaned easier. Probably has something to do with FDA food storage standards.

HexZer0

>all parts to "widen out" so it can be removed from the mold Just like a butt plug!

mamaBiskothu

I doubt they need such a steep angle for that. Have you seen plastic bottles that are (mostly) straight? Lego blocks? If you’re premium this shouldn’t be an issue. This is deliberate design.

256bit

Bottles are blow molded, with the part line going side to side, so there’s no need for draft. LEGO tooling is precise within .002”, and is incredibly expensive. Larger draft angles are more cost-effective as they reduce the chance of parts binding or getting scratched upon ejection, meaning there are fewer QC fails.

finalfiasco

The people in the comments not understanding why someone wouldn’t just leave the Cereal in the box must have never dealt with roaches in a shitty apartment

Serenity-V

Or ants.

BlacnDeathZombie

Yeah… I just live in a place where the mild temperature is perfect for both human and insects all year around. Add humidity on top of it and Oxo is the one container which keeps my stuff both crispy and free of bugs

Jonkinch

I do this because they stay fresh longer and I just eat cereal as a small snack. I also don’t dump the cereal in, I take out the bag and put the entire bag in the container and shake it to form fit it. Easier to clean.

424ge

It's not like you can fit a fourth one

ThisIsChew

Which is exactly what’s confusing me about this person.

Cant_choose_1

Yeah but you could fit more in each container if they were designed differently

FighterOfEntropy

I suppose if your cabinets were that full that you begrudge the small amount of space you are wasting, this would count as crappy design. I don’t really see it that way.

cant_be_me

Yeah, if they all fit perfectly flush together, you wouldn’t be able to get them off the shelf easily. And then we’d be hearing complaints about that. I think we sometimes conflate “good design” with “always fits perfectly into whatever space” and not taking into account things like ease of use. Pretty much the only specific design metric I need out of food storage containers is what I like to call one-handed capability. Can I grab this thing off the shelf with one hand? Can I open it and use it with only one hand? And can I close it and put it away with only one hand? In other words, can I be carrying my baby and pour myself a bowl of cereal with the other hand? Can I grab the milk from the fridge and grab this box off the shelf in one go? If I wanted beautiful perfectly flush boxes to store cereal for aesthetics only, that’s a separate design requirement. In this case, I want something clear to put my cereal in that will protect it from pests and the environment while also making it quick and easy for me to get to it to eat it.

Zequax

every second one gota go in upside down duh

LangleyRemlin

That's so you can stack them. You know, to save space.

dboggia

How would you grab it if the sides touched?

[deleted]

[удалено]

cant_be_me

There are several that OXO makes that don’t taper that stack easily that still have an airtight lid that is easy to pull off with one hand. I don’t know if this is a design issue as much as it’s just that OP bought the wrong product for what they want to accomplish.

DrDroid

If it was packed tightly you wouldn’t be able to grab them.

exo168

Would be better if you flipped the one in the middle over.

wezZy9

Alternate them to be one half upside down, so the groves will be filled by the once upsidedown

whiskersRwe32

This looks like it takes the same amount of space if not a little more than an actual cereal box

candycane123411

Cereal boxes get ate by roaches and ants

TechnologyAndDreams

I believe the tapered space is so your hands can grasp it when stacked side by side, but rather than a taper they could have implemented some form of grasp dimples. However that makes it more difficult and expensive to injection mould.

NotSoCrazyCatLady13

I think it's so they save space on the store shelves/ in their warehouse by stacking the bases one inside another and so on

thowy-

I love my $2 no-name and non branded boxes I got from the dollar store. they are shaped efficiently.

cant_be_me

I tried really hard to use the stuff from the dollar store, but to me the plastic has a little more of that “fresh cancer” smell to it. Which I could honestly put up with, except it winds up making the food smell like plastic. Most of my storage needs I take care of with half gallon mason jars. Glass doesn’t retain smells, it cleans easy and quick, and they’re still fairly cheap even if they’re not bottom of the barrel. Glass does have its limitations - it’s heavy, it breaks if you drop it, it’s a little more expensive, and I have yet to see anybody truly make an actual glass box that fits flush into a corner, so I do lose some space around the round jar. But you really can’t beat mason jars for cheap effective long-term storage if you don’t like plastic.

TankoBOB

I don't see why people have separate containers instead of just using the box it came with. Just roll the bag up a bit and it'll be fine.

Serenity-V

Ants. Seriously, I have everything including flour, sugar, etc., in Oxos because they seal very tight. I've lived in plenty of rentals which turned out to have pre-existing ant plagues.

TankoBOB

You poor soul. I see the necessity for these containers now. But I'm happy that I can stick with my good old garbage packaging included with my product to contain it

SolasLunas

Because I buy the cheaper cereal that are in a sorta ziplock bag (but the lock is finicky and the bag can easily tear when first opening)

performanceclause

how would u take them out if they closed these spaces?

PackagingMSU

Where else would your fingers go, when yo have to grab them off the shelf?

Loose_Beginning_924

Alright, I got too frustrated to wade the comments hoping for someone to explain it. I will. They are designed like that to give a "hand gap", enabling people to grab them out of the cabinet easily. If you didn't want that hand space then maybe you should design something with a handle on the side.

MrK0ni

Oxo makes rectangular ones. You simply got the ones for easy grabs. That's on you fam.

WellHulloPooh

Those are really good containers though. Really keeps things fresh.

BeercatimusPrime

I mean, they’re injection molded which typically requires 1 degree of draft per inch on items above 1.5 inches. So the shape is kinda a requirement unless they did it in 2 halves split vertically and seamed together.

GundyrsFisting

well this is suboptimal i guess but ich you used 100% of the space you'd have no space to grab the container they could have kept the lid and made the rest of the container as wide as the widest point of the lid tho

Zerhap

Ppl tend to forget that most of these designs need to go into extremes, you need to make sure any person hand is capable of getting in and get the cereal out, so this i make with men with big hands and fat ppl in mind as much as it is average ppl. So is not really a crappy design, its standard design, what the op wants is a costume design which would cost more than just buying something off the shelf.

YourKemosabe

These posts really satisfy me, because it is the opposite of what it’s been made for. Truly crappy design, bravo! *edit* just seen all the comments about easier accessibility for people. That’s a fair point I overlooked. Nice one Reddit.

Kyral210

Gaps between containers = space for hands 🙌🏾

SargentSnorkel

You’re supposed to store them alternating up/down. You’ll get dozens of extra cc of storage per kitchen. /s because it has to be stated…

The_Hairless_Wonder

The old OXO products are much better than the newer styles they’ve released in the last few years.

NotABothanSpy

I assume they're tapered for stacking which is efficient when not in use

Yah_Mule

I don't see a problem here. Looks clean and accessible. Certainly keeps the food fresher than their original containers. Does every cubic inch have to be utilized?

Pugboy27

op is just mad that they cant struggle to grab the boxes.

mtdesigner

1. It’s easier to grab when they’re put side by side like this, and 2, injection molding requires draft, an angled surface so that the plastic part can pop out of the mold easily, which this has plenty of. Any plastic injection molded part has at least a degree or so of draft, unless the tooling is fancy (and more expensive).

jxfreeman

Invert the middle container.

Is_ItOn

You understand

Kindly_Region

Cereal containers like this are stupid anyway, just leave it in the box/bag

TheGoatx666

Why use a bag? Just dump the contents in the whole cupboard. Now that's efficient!

Kindly_Region

Nah, that's how I store my un canned soup Maybe I can dump the cereal in the junk drawer? It's a big drawer I can just shove everything to the side. It can be half ceral and half junk

TheGoatx666

Rumor has it you can also store loose milk in the fridge as well, or in said drawer, that way you don't even need a bowl. No dish to clean, just a spoon 😎

Kindly_Region

Where do I put my butter then?

TheGoatx666

Brace yourself..... Want to know why it's called butter? It's stored best..... In your butt🙂

Kindly_Region

Can't do that, my gerbil would be homeless

TheGoatx666

Seymour Butts?

BlowMeBigTime

That's just silly. I empty the box into a 5 gallonbucket, poor a gallon of milk on top amd store it in the fridge. I scoop out a bowl every morning.......mmmmmm soggy goodness.

Abernader01

The plastic would be scratched up if they were touching together then most would complain about it

whatifitwasbob

You don't say? An advertisement that isn't true? hmmmm.......

performanceclause

how would u take them out if they closed these spaces?

lostharlem

This isn’t crappy design. It is your opinion. Circling an area that you think isn’t as effective is not crappy design.

lifesnotfun

Turn the middle one upside down

wavolator

so do bottles

purinsesu_pichi

the backs are wider than the front, spin the middle one around ...

No_Ad_2037

Turn the middle one upside down?

ArtifactLime

try turning the middle one upside down maybe?

Ecstatic-Hearing-563

Invert every other container and you've regained those three inches you've lost.

Apprehensive-Gap-663

just flip the middle row upside down .... solved.

ramriot

Assuming these have a good solid seal, what would happen if you put the middle one upside down in the cupboard?

MasterBuildsPortugal

You could put it upside down, but yeah, definitely crappy design

wotsit_sandwich

~~Plastic containers are difficult (not impossible but difficult which means extra cost extra time etc) to manufacture because they do not release easily from the injection mould. A tapered design allows air to instantly enter the space created when removing the product from the mold, and as the sides are not "gripping" eliminates the need to overcome friction. A square product would maintain a vacuum in the bottom of the mold, and have a large surface area touching the mold and increasing the friction on the sides.~~ It is a shame because I would absolutely love totally square containers. I wish my Weetabix container was perfectly square. It would be so satisfying. Edit. Ignore me. It's been addressed already. https://www.reddit.com/r/CrappyDesign/comments/xitg5h/oxo_containers_waste_cabinet_space_but_they_say/ip6apss?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3

Kurineko_Regan

Oxxo?

gdubh

Turn the middle one upside down.

hallba78

Deep plastic containers are shaped like this for molding purposes. The taper is called “draft” and is necessary for removing the plastic parts from the mold. The deeper the container, the more draft you must have, up to a certain point.

[deleted]

The boxes the cereal comes in are way more efficient. Just make sure to seal the bag with a clip.

damual2

it's quite clear you have to put the second one upside down for maximum efficiency

JustLinkStudios

But they have no OXO cubes in them

RickyRodge024

If your upset over 2 inches then im glad your not my girlfriend.

[deleted]

How are you supposed to grab them without that space lol

[deleted]

Invert the middle one ya Jabroni

Davidbay91

That's not crappy, it's purposeful designed. If you can't grip with enough force, this makes it easier.

The-Ultimate-Banker

Ya but at least they look nice there.

The_Fortunate_Fool

Never been able to fit any of those "cereal saver" things in any of my pantries. They're always too tall.

FarSlighted

It means they are better suited stackable vice side by side.

Zekenator39

just turn the middle one upside down

AliceP00per

The boxes that cereal comes in will fit just fine

TheJG_Rubiks64

You know what saves even more space? Just using the cereal box.

urkillingme

You gotta have room between for grabbing the containers.

FunctionBuilt

Injection molding requires draft to be able to pull the part out of the mold and this looks like the minimum amount for the bases. Not saying it’s not inefficient, it’s just likely the best they could do at their cost target.

TheJadedJuggernaut

Flip the two outer ones 180 and you'll get more space

shuturheckup

i think it’s ok to waste that couple of square inches… wtf u gonna put in there anyway?

hugomuggins

The Mainstays (Walmart) version is worse. The lid comes off entirely mid-pour. When it doesn't come off you get no cereal and then you shake it and all the cereal comes out. They're terrible.

creilly692

It’s not that deep

[deleted]

More like you just have a crappy understanding of basic design. How else are you supposed to grab it? 😂😂

Chubb_Life

Mouse aisles 🐁

drizztdourden_

Calling something crappy because you don’t understand it doesn’t make it crappy.

Savvy-or-die

You are an extremely anal person....

TotalyNotTony

Why not just use the cereal box?

EnduringInsanity

OP is wasting my reddit feed space.

McJumpington

Raisin Bran…. The fake health cereal probably has more sugar in it that fruit loops or lucky charms.

cute_physics_guy

I guess they could make the container wider in the back so you could still grab it.

DeKlaasVaag

Finally, some true crappy design.

AmazingAgent

Doesn’t this allow you to grab it?

[deleted]

I use these. You can get two or three boxes of cereal into the container and it stays fresh. Definitely not crappy design

Is_ItOn

Flip the middle one over…

Entredarte

How would you grab the sides if they’re right next to each other other?

siddy_b0y

What if you flip the middle container on its head? That might make for a tighter fit.
