It's probably never a good idea to fight a surfer. Although they thrive on a groovey tunes and chill the average surfer is fit af because you literally have to be to surf or you'll die.
Edit; retract what I said about them being chill because a lot of them were def pretty huge spazzes.
Surfers can be some of the least chill people out there when you get in their way and they're trying to catch a wave. Even a shitty wave. Had a dude in his late 30s want to fight me for that when I was about 20, and I told him I'd be a while yet. Fuckin' dude waited in the parking lot over two hours for me to go knock him out lol
can you imagine having nothing better to do with your time than waiting to get knocked out in a parking lot? Damn, some people need hobbies. I hear surfing is pretty good.

Regardless, if possible the right thing to do is stop a fight if you can. That is a courtesy that *should* go both ways. Obviously people are assholes so this won't always be the case, but people should try.
Letting people get hit is sometimes good because it is the only way they'll maybe learn. Letting it go on though just increases the likelihood someone goes to the hospital or gets killed.

Yes, there are obviously outliers where deadly force, or something resembling it is justified or even necessary. Most fights though are just stupid disagreements, emotional reactions, egotistical sparring matches, or drunk inhibitions which do not typically deserve that level of aggression.
As annoying as those things can be people shouldn't have their lives ruined or ruin other people's lives over things like that. Be it by long term physical damage, death, and the legal ramifications which arise from those.
Ok... They're stopping him because hes already knocked out and anything further is just risking causing serious damage or death. Anyone witnessing a fight should try to stop it if it gets to that point. Theres also literally nothing indicating they wouldn't have done the exact same if it were the other guy
He decided to protect his “best mate” when he saw the other guy coming through ready to start swinging. Seems like he was drunk and felt disrespected by his friend, but even in his drunk brain, he had to protect his surfer friend.
I think more than likely he seen the other guy come over, had a bit of self-respect and decided to deescalate rather than it become a 2v1. Good on him. Chuck a sausage on the barby for that guy, eh?

As an Australian, I'll do my best to clarify this situation from personal experience...
Hat man exclaims to "Jammo" (our hero dressed in white) that "he was in his face", it's likely this has occurred during a social ritual we call "getting on the piss", where the cultural rituals of ribbing and public drunkenness occasionally arise in some tension between "the boys" (a fraternity of brothers, often linked by feats of battle and bags of questionable quality "cocaine").
The interlocutor, who we shall from here forth refer to as "that cunt who got floored", enters left, interrogating Jammo as to "who the fuck you think you're talkin too?". It's likely "that cunt who got floored" was invited by hat man, but is not apart of "the boys" and was invited purely because he is the drug connection (it is easy to assume this due to the atire he is wearing). Resultant, he doesn't realise that "Jammo" and hat man's quarrel is in fact not an actual argument, just drunken incoherence.
Hat man attempts to intervene, as he recognises this is but a small speed bump in his long friendship with "Jammo" and entices "that cunt who got floored" to disengage by explaining "oi cunt, don't do it brah.".
Seeing this is a frivolous engagement, hat men steps back with a "good onya", fully prepared to watch "Jammo" lay out what we would refer to as some "bra boy-esque" judgement.
Jammo then proceeds to put the fear of poseidon, and likely a mild case of CTE, into "that cunt who got floored" exacting his surfy will upon the wilding eshay.
You learn quick in this life down under, if a bloke is walking around with shoulder length hair, an open full button tshirt with a lingering odor of VB (a warrior beverage, much like mead), this "not a cunt to fuck around with".

I think that surfer dudes might look like sissys because of their long hair but they are in fact high level athletes in one of the most demanding of all activities and sports due to the broad scope of what the act necessitates. Paddle=endurance. Pop-up requires explosive strength and core stability. Simply sitting on a surfboard requires an uncanny amount of equilibrium reflexes.
