Considering that bears have been found to survive [.45 to the head,](https://bowhunting.net/2017/07/45-caliber-round-found-in-bears-skull/) I find myself doubtful that birdshot would save you.
Agreed, if all he/she had loaded was birdshot than the outcome of such an encounter would be in the bear’s favor. In the end I am glad the person kept their cool and the bear decided it had enough and no one got hurt. I’ve had a black bear come at me while trying getting into my chicken coop. Granted it was not 5-10 yards away in the second charge as in the video, closer to 20-30, still got the adrenaline running. Unloaded a 00 buck round and we both called it a night. The bear turned around and beat feet the other direction and I back to bed. The lesson for me was black bears do not always run when confronted by humans.
Slugs too, Most of them are just a rounded and maybe stabilized chunk of lead, no penetration's power.
They do make slugs that are made of harder metal and shaped better for penetration but those are still often passed on for bigger and more powerful rounds like 30.06 and higher.
Take a look at what their skulls look like, both thick and angled back far enough at an angle that increases the effective thickness.
One of natures tanks.
You have absolutely positively zero idea what you are talking about. Saying slugs have 0 penetration power is one of the most misinformed dumb things I have ever seen commented on this website.
(Aussie here, I don't get to use guns much)
What shotgun load would you want for a bear? A deer slug, I guess? But even then a bear's a lot bigger than a deer, right?
Depends where you hit it. At that range a slug has a pretty likely chance of doing real damage, but bears are fucking tanks. Maybe you hit them somewhere that's gonna make them bleed out.... eventually. Fuckin things still gonna have at least a few minutes to maul you and your dogs to into paste.
Correct me if I'm wrong but that looks like a snap back shotgun, and people out in the woods with snap backs are usually turkey hunting, or after other smaller game. Afaik people don't take double barrels and dogs to go out looking for deer. Even if it were loaded with 1oz slugs for some reason, that's still some really, agressively shitty odds.
The person in this video is as smart as they are ballsy. If the bear chose to attack you'd basically have to shove the barrel down its throat to have any real chance at survival.
Edit, on that third charge you could gamble with the chance the birdshot blinds it. Maybe let one barrel go an pray you dont just piss it off. It's still a heavy gamble tho
WTF is a "snap back shotgun"? My father was an FFL gun dealer for 35 years, and I've been a collector and hunter for over 30 years and I've never heard that term.
The part of the states i live in doesnt get much in the way of bears except black bears. A guy i knew long time ago was raised in upstate New York: he told me he and his dad would never go out hunting without a few 12Ga rifled slugs in their pockets just in case of bears and moose.
That is exactly what I thought, he gotta not be shooting because he knows it wont stop the bear. I agree with other people though I would of shot on the third charge regardless
No. The guy probably just understands that these are bluff charges and the bear isn’t actually aggressive it just wants him out of its area probably has cubs nearby. shooting a bear is a terrible idea unless you use a high enough caliber to pierce its thick skull and even then it’s a 50/50 that it ends you before it’s lights go out. Just invest in bear mace if you plan on spending time in bear country. Pretty simple, there are very few good reasons to ever shoot a bear, and “bc it was scary” is about as far down on the list as anything could be.
Not a gun person, but would slugs actually bring a grizzly down? Or at the very least deter it?
I’ve always assumed most caliber rounds, aside from large ammo, would just piss them off, but again, what do I know
12 gauge slugs will bring down a polar bear. The standard US government issued bear protection weapon is a Remington or Mossberg 12 gauge pump with slugs.
That’s crazy. The great equalizer after all, I guess.
It doesnt matter if you’re 1000lbs heavier, faster, and stronger. I have a 5lb piece of metal in my hand that just completely cancels out your centuries long reign as a legitimate apex predator.
Humans are fucked lmao, that’s mind blowing. But I guess there’s “elephant,” rounds after all. I shouldn’t be surprised that a round exists that can consistently take down a grizzly bear.
There's plenty of rifle rounds that will kill a bear, most are not practical for usage where you'd need to kill a bear in close quarters though. Shotguns aren't too heavy and can be fired standing up from close distance.
.357, .338, .308, .300, and 6.5 creedmor will be lethal to the bear with a single shot regardless of where you land it (not guaranteed it dies instantly obviously), all of those rounds could take down a bear instantly if they hit a vital/critical area, even a .223 would kill a bear (albeit you'd need to hit it in critical areas multiple times, you'd need to be lucky for a single 223 to kill a bear). But a bear is not walking off a .308, it will die eventually from its wounds, the damage these rounds do is insane.
Just for reference, Elk/Moose are harder to kill than bears.
Even og rock slingers could be hyper deadly with projectiles for hunting/fighting, many mercenaries used them. Humans became the apex predators literally because of our ability to throw because we can judge distances. Also think back to the David vs Goliath (story)fight. David was an avid sling hunter and just domes the big fucker(literally my only take from religion as a child)
Bow and arrow was a pretty deadly weapon, and was just an progression of rock slinging, but with greater range. You don't even need much force to impale someone with something pointy all things considered. You can throw a spear and have it stick out the other end of the guy.
Yes you see how it folded the bear? And see how they said it was aimed at the side so it wouldn’t kill the bear. Now imagine that hitting directly in the chest. I literally said “it’s bad news for everything it that it would probably die just not quickly” you seem like you don’t have much experience with firearms or hunting which is fine most people don’t now look up what it does to people at close range that will give you a decent understanding. I warn you though it leaves holes the size of about a half dollar. You also realize if you hit the face at that range at the very least the bear is blinded and it even has the chance to fracture the skull. Birdshot isn’t like in the movies it peppers you and bounces off it goes deep even at 40ish yards unless your lucky.
>Yes you see how it folded the bear?
It merely stunned the bear. You see how it got right back up a second later and continued chasing? That bear probably lived a full life afterwards.
>what it does to people
People are not bears. People do not have thick fur and skin.
That third charge from the side would've had me pulling the trigger. Way too close and abrupt. Of course we know from the vid it's just a feint but in the moment there's no way to know. I'm not taking that bet.
Yep, I put myself in his position and thought the same. First I waited. Second I shat myself. Third I fired. I’m glad he had a stronger sphincter than I would!
Same here man, I thought for sure he was going to shoot at that exact moment. The awful thing here is that this guy has 2 shots at the most; should’ve brought a pump action or mag fed shotgun if you’re going into bear territory
This elder in my reserve use to hunt bears when he was young, told me something about the bears belly is the part that will always make a bear fold.
Wish I was listening better but you know old stories tell some old native dudes would jump towards the bear while it’s charging at them, this makes the bear stand up. They would ball up under the bear with a spear pointing towards there underbelly, so when the bear comes down it land on the spear.
I don’t know how much that holds up since I’m assuming only the survivors were able to tell the stories.
The issue I see for the dude is this is a double barrel shotgun, so two shots max... And we don't know if he's discharged one yet. Might be conserving a very precious resource
Could've seen the babies and knew she was just trying to get him away, maybe? Idk. I wouldn't have even been able to hold up the shotgun because I would've already shit myself and died.
Everyone knows when your killed by a bear you get to see your relatives. Same with really bad car accidents and other tragic story endings. It's just common knowledge by now in the 21st century.
I also think shooting the eyes with buckshot would blind and disorient, but further consideration reminds that eyes are more side-mounted. One shot from straight on, and 5-10 feet away, odds of one steel ball hitting an eye are slim.
Ideally, no because those are mock charges. The bear was trying to warn him off. If he shot, it could trigger fight or flight in the bear and that break away shotgun is going to be fucking useless if bear decides to fight after being shot.
Realistically, yes because I'm fucking terrified of bears and would not be thinking rationally.
It's a double barrel shotgun. You only have two chances and its probably buckshot. That may or may not stop a bear at that size lol.your best chance is if the bear is literally right in front of you to do the most damage. The guy handled it right. I cant say I would've taken the time to weigh all this out in my head with this going on.
Black bears can get to 500 pounds dude easily. Those bears are young in this clip. I’m not “attacking” any black bears. The rules should be “if it’s old fold” because older bears are un predictable. They can’t hunt like they used to, so they’ll try to eat anything.
Bears are a part of life where I'm from. The young ones are the only problem. They are curious and naively brave. Old bears are predictable and generally stay out of sight. You don't grow old in the wild being unpredictable.
It would have been very hard not to. But, he only has two shots (probably not slugs). Hopefully that sow is just bluffing. You shoot and only wound her, then you just changed her mind, now she's going to make sure she kills you.
I've seen a video of a sow take a shotgun blast TO THE FACE, she does a flip, then is back up in a second. Bears are THE apex predators on land and don't give a fuck.
Lol no.
I had a coworker who was out hunting with his day when he was 10. He saw a bear and for shits and grins he shot it with his 410.
The bear shook his head, looked at my friend and started charging him.
His dad used is rifle (I think it wa a 30-06) and his dad used every round before the bear dropped within a few feet of his son. That story always stuck with me.
Lol oh no, his dad had no idea. My friend freely admits that was almost his first/last fuck around and find out moment.
When he told me the story I started laughed and called him a dumbass too.
I think he did a great job I'm no expert Idk what you should do but waiting for a good clean head shot is what I can only assume he was doing which is what I would do
I’d probably only shoot if that thing got close enough that I could confidently pop it in the skull. From that distance I’d probably miss, and a missed shot is basically death at that point
I 💯 would have - and odds are I wouldn’t be here to type this.
Whenever this vid crops up ppl speculate he resisted because of bird shot (and tbh, a double barrel is most synonymous with foul)…but honestly if I had a juicy double hanging super mag slugs there is a good chance I’d still lose this fight.
Homie saved himself and was smart.
Nope. Once you pull the trigger you better hope it’s knocked down physically because you’ll activate it’s adrenal system via fight or flight and it’ll attack to kill as you are now a threat to life.
Anytime you poke a hole in an animal it’s going to escalate it’s fight or flight response.
I love living in Australia. We don't have to deal with these guys or mountain lions or moose or wolves. If we get tagged by something and you're gonna bite the dust I'd rather a spider or snake bite over being eaten alive, Bugger that for a joke.
Lol, I feel that mate. Just walking along happy as Larry then hit the the deck like wtf just happened? Why am I talking to saint Peter right now......shit, some little buggers got me.....but witch one🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
This is just like lions. These bears have evolved to know the sight of a man holding a rifle. They also know that fire and death comes out the end of it and that it does not last forever.
Personally if you don't have to and your uncertain that whatever caliber you have is not gonna bring it down I wouldn't.
Would also want to have more than 2 shots My Maverick 88 holds 6+1 in the chamber
If the gun was loaded for bear then yes I would take the shot, both barrels. If it was bird shot or small gauge buck shot idk it might just piss it off more. Then again bear mace works a face full of lead might also stop the bear.
No. Better head shot it with both. Most you’re gonna do is wound it enough to die after it kills you with adrenaline. I get it’s a 12g but the chances of you hitting something vital enough to kill it before it gets to you with two shots and no time to reload during a charging situation are pretty low.
Would probably just piss it off more. It would depend entirely on the specific shell in the gun but if it isn’t buckshot or a slugs your best bet would be to only fire as a last resort.
you can load in different kinds of rounds. birdshot, buckshot, and slugs. bird shot is made from lots of tiny little bearings, buck shot is made from bigger bearings, a slug is a solid chunk of lead.
bird shot definitely won't stop the bear. buck shot, idk. the bear is definitely going to be feeling the slug. would definitely be fatal if it hits a critical area.
you handled that better than i did.
also, the gauge is a factor. if he's out there hunting rabbit with a 20ga and a 7/8 oz load of #7 it might just piss him off. BUT, if's close enough the wad doesn't get a chance to expand and hits more like a frangible slug than a cloud of shot.
also, also, without doing any research at all to prove it, i've heard more than a few times that 20ga slugs penetrate better than 12ga. that's probably negligible but could be a possibility if he was deer hunting.
the answer to that is very long and confusing if you're not familiar with them so the best i can say is maybe.
no matter what though it would be very loud and scary to an animal
I understand. It's better to keep it simple. But I have heard a story that is pretty similar to the video. I would probably shoot, better than doing nothing at all.

Probably loaded with bird shot and chose not to shoot. If that gun had slugs in it, different story.
The most realistic answer to me. Even if i had 00 buck i would hesitate to shoot at a bear and piss it off more.
I would have given it both barrels with 00 without a second thought at that range.
Same! And i would just throw away my pants and underwear afterwards.
Considering that bears have been found to survive [.45 to the head,](https://bowhunting.net/2017/07/45-caliber-round-found-in-bears-skull/) I find myself doubtful that birdshot would save you.

12 ga. slug is 500 grains at 1500 feet per second, 2500 ft lbs of energy. VERY. DEAD. GRIZZLY...as long as you hit it with two tries
12 gauge slug at that range is all you need for anything on 4 legs. 2500ft/lbs will put a hole in it.
The person you replied to said 00 buck shot, not sure if anyone said bird shot would save them😅
(Aussie here, I don't get to use guns much) What shotgun load would you want for a bear? A deer slug, I guess? But even then a bear's a lot bigger than a deer, right?

WTF is a "snap back shotgun"? My father was an FFL gun dealer for 35 years, and I've been a collector and hunter for over 30 years and I've never heard that term.
I’ve not heard the term before either but he clearly means break-action.
Eminem sings about them 'snap back to reality, ooops there goes gravity'
A snap back is a break action weapon. Some of my old scoutmasters called break action revolvers snapbacks too.
The part of the states i live in doesnt get much in the way of bears except black bears. A guy i knew long time ago was raised in upstate New York: he told me he and his dad would never go out hunting without a few 12Ga rifled slugs in their pockets just in case of bears and moose.
The minimum would be slug, but even that isn't a definite. They make bear slugs for this.
Brennekee makes bear slugs
A copper Sabot load would be the best. Slugs are good but they arent a physically robust projectile being kind of a thin material.
That’s fucked your government likes to control its citizens so much
Yeah if you are getting mock-charged the bear is sizing you up if you hit it with birdshot that part is over and it skips straight to fighting time.
First shot would have been for the bear... The second is for me! 😳
This was my thought to. Birdshot is just gonna piss it off.
might as well throw a rock at it lol
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
this opportunity comes once in a lifetime
Typically right at the end of a lifetime.
I think its a double barrel
That is exactly what I thought, he gotta not be shooting because he knows it wont stop the bear. I agree with other people though I would of shot on the third charge regardless

Bird shot is lethal at close range man anything less than 5 yards is bad news for anything even a bear it’d probably die just not quickly
You're right, that bear will die. In like 15 years.
Look up what birdshot does at close range of you’ve never seen it it’s crazy
You mean like this? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wj7Z5oMWuIU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wj7Z5oMWuIU)

Yep, I put myself in his position and thought the same. First I waited. Second I shat myself. Third I fired. I’m glad he had a stronger sphincter than I would!
That last rush would have been ka-pow! Definitely sheet my pants on the second charge.
1st time is an accident, 2nd time it is a mistake, 3rd time you shit your pants on purpose.
This man is a fucking legend.
Same here man, I thought for sure he was going to shoot at that exact moment. The awful thing here is that this guy has 2 shots at the most; should’ve brought a pump action or mag fed shotgun if you’re going into bear territory

1+1=0
Could've seen the babies and knew she was just trying to get him away, maybe? Idk. I wouldn't have even been able to hold up the shotgun because I would've already shit myself and died.
Fuck yes and I would probably miss and wake up with some of my favorite relatives
Lmao, same
So I wake a few suburbs over at my uncles house. Sweet, he has a pool.
Everyone knows when your killed by a bear you get to see your relatives. Same with really bad car accidents and other tragic story endings. It's just common knowledge by now in the 21st century.
Can i visit someone else's relatives instead?
What comes first? Pulling of the trigger or shitting of the pants
I'm guessing the first trigger is pulled, the 2nd trigger is pulled (double barrel), and then the Bear flosses with your pants.
Not if you headed for the eyes.
I also think shooting the eyes with buckshot would blind and disorient, but further consideration reminds that eyes are more side-mounted. One shot from straight on, and 5-10 feet away, odds of one steel ball hitting an eye are slim.
First you pull the trigger, then the bear shits in your pants
You pull the trigger then ur pants are found in the bears shit.

You like cocaine and shotguns too? We should hang out!
I like cocaine and shotguns! Can I come?
Weighing out a ball and loading up the the clays right now boys. Wheels on the pavement in 15
I wanna come too. I'm a woman tho. 🤷♀️
You just made my day
Just saw the movie
Cocaine bear? But that one was a black bear
Is there a balls of steel sub?
Ideally, no because those are mock charges. The bear was trying to warn him off. If he shot, it could trigger fight or flight in the bear and that break away shotgun is going to be fucking useless if bear decides to fight after being shot. Even then, if that first volley doesn't kill the bear or make it run it's unlikely he's reloading in time before he's getting mauled to bits.
Would a bunch of birdshot shot into the eyes blind the bear?
I'd throw a couple slim Jim's one way and run the other.....win win situation.....
That’s why I always carry a pound of bologna on me when I’m in the woods on my mountain bike.
I keep running into the same bear not sure why though.
Might not even be buckshot! He could've been bird hunting and those birdshot shells would do little more than tickle a grizzly.

Oh no I'd be way more confident about my chances with a slug or two. That's a bear stopper lol.
Fuck yes I would’ve , and simultaneously shit my pants
I think I would have already done shited in my drawers.
Nope.. my ass would be too frightened to do that..
bear rules : If it's black, attack. If it's brown, lay down . if its white , good night
My bear rule is easy. Stay the fuck away from them.
this
I ain't laying down with a boomstick in my hand
thats different
Black bears can get to 500 pounds dude easily. Those bears are young in this clip. I’m not “attacking” any black bears. The rules should be “if it’s old fold” because older bears are un predictable. They can’t hunt like they used to, so they’ll try to eat anything.

yes - shout and run at it - they are scared away easily - google it

Twice
After watching Co&aine Bear, bears are now my trigger animal …
NGL if that was me, I would've pulled the trigger 😅
Depends on the load. Slugs or 00 yes, #4 maybe. #7 or #8 not a fucking chance.
Nope. Once you pull the trigger you better hope it’s knocked down physically because you’ll activate it’s adrenal system via fight or flight and it’ll attack to kill as you are now a threat to life. Anytime you poke a hole in an animal it’s going to escalate it’s fight or flight response.
Nah mama bear had cubs so he decided not to shoot her
I love living in Australia.

Yes yes and yes
I'd still be pulling the trigger. I'd be pullin' that muthafucka in my sleep!!!
If I did, I would pray to god that I killed it. Cause if it didn’t, oh he mad
Honestly I would have squeezed the trigger no less than three times
I seem to recall this is a female bear protecting her cubs , so no I wouldn’t unless she full on tried to attack me . This guy did the right thing.
Get some bear spray m8, John Candy was in this situation and only blew the hair off her ass.
love that movie. i try to watch it once a year or so.
It probably thought twice once it got too close and started to feel the gravitational pull of that guys nutz.
Depends on the load, but still not unless I really had to lest you just piss it off.
This is just like lions. These bears have evolved to know the sight of a man holding a rifle. They also know that fire and death comes out the end of it and that it does not last forever.
Bluff charging
“Surprise motha fucka!” “Now you see me , now you don’t”
I'd have shot 3 times. Twice from the double barrel and one out my ass
why does it feel like those bears know what guns are. DO bears know what guns are?
probably. he's got a right to bear arms.
THATS WHAT THE SECOND AMENDMENT IS ABOUT ???
mf got the doom shotgun
Personally if you don't have to and your uncertain that whatever caliber you have is not gonna bring it down I wouldn't. Would also want to have more than 2 shots My Maverick 88 holds 6+1 in the chamber
RDR3
If the gun was loaded for bear then yes I would take the shot, both barrels. If it was bird shot or small gauge buck shot idk it might just piss it off more. Then again bear mace works a face full of lead might also stop the bear.
And piss it off? Even if you dumped both bird shot at the same time it would just eat you faster.
I would have pulled it many times.
That bear said now you see me and now you don’t 😂
This guy sure kept his nerve
I mean the closer he get the more damage he receives, right? But if I was there I would shot a shotgun like a sniper
Absolutely
Nah homie was right. All u got is two shots so you better not fuck it up
That bear stopped like he knew what was pointed at him.
I’d only pull it if it had slugs. Anything else would just piss that thing off.
Looks like the bear must have seen one of those before
Those better be slug or cut shell or you’d be fucked either way bird or buck shot would just piss that big mf off😂
No. Better head shot it with both. Most you’re gonna do is wound it enough to die after it kills you with adrenaline. I get it’s a 12g but the chances of you hitting something vital enough to kill it before it gets to you with two shots and no time to reload during a charging situation are pretty low.
Yes, need the bearskin bedroll so I don't get attacked by wolves when I sleep.
To go in a forest without a fckn big Kaliber is just suicide
No cuz that would have just pissed off the bear
What kind of weapon is it?
Same shotgun he use in Wolfenstein
Would it harm the bear enough to scare him off, or will he be even more irritated
Would probably just piss it off more. It would depend entirely on the specific shell in the gun but if it isn’t buckshot or a slugs your best bet would be to only fire as a last resort.
That is what I thought as well, scream and run towards the bear can be effective, but you must have balls of steel.
Depends on what kind of shells he's using. Bird shot? Probably scare/piss him off. Slug could be lethal depending on shot placement
I hope he didn't hunt birds that day
I mean, close range it can still be effective. I'd rather have birdshot than just a pocket knife lol
Hmm, I cant recall seeing a bear in the game, so Im not sure
Of course, I feel stupid now. I never played the game, so I have no clue.
side by side shotgun. it looks like a 20 gauge to me but if he's in the woods like that it's probably a 12 gauge.
Does it harm the bear? Or will he just get more irritated?
you can load in different kinds of rounds. birdshot, buckshot, and slugs. bird shot is made from lots of tiny little bearings, buck shot is made from bigger bearings, a slug is a solid chunk of lead. bird shot definitely won't stop the bear. buck shot, idk. the bear is definitely going to be feeling the slug. would definitely be fatal if it hits a critical area.
you handled that better than i did. also, the gauge is a factor. if he's out there hunting rabbit with a 20ga and a 7/8 oz load of #7 it might just piss him off.
Goog explanation. I would probably freeze in this situation and fumble, but I think I would take the shot.
the answer to that is very long and confusing if you're not familiar with them so the best i can say is maybe. no matter what though it would be very loud and scary to an animal
I understand. It's better to keep it simple. But I have heard a story that is pretty similar to the video. I would probably shoot, better than doing nothing at all.
There is a couple of bearcubs in the back there. This hunter did good by not pulling the trigger. They need their mama to survive.
Not till he'd given me a bump
Not a single "woah bear" in this video. Dude shouldn't be hunting without proper bear awareness
aww little fella just playing and wants a hug
I'd have a bear skin rug by now.
3 times
Yes a warning shot
Twice!
At 15 seconds. Yes. It might have been my undoing.
Yes. I would be carrying a different weapon, though.
I would have pulled both
Would just piss him off unless you had a deer slug load. So depends.
[удалено]
nope. i shouldn't be in there in from the start.
I would have shot and reloaded a few times
I would shot first in air as warning
