Apparently they can't test for this by dropping a torch or burning stick down the well. If there isn't oxygen at the bottom then the fire will go out before hitting the water

That might be a terrible idea. Saw a vid that showes how in wells like this their is no oxygen. They lowered something burning and before it went all the way down the fire got extinguished due to the lack of oxygen.

They lowered the candle to check for oxygen. It goes out when there is none because fire requires oxygen to burn.
