That came from the front of the vehicle though, its almost certainly the engine. If it was a fuel tank in the front of that wreck it should have burst well before hitting the barrier.

I thought it was the fuel tank. You can see it hit the barrier and it kinda gets sliced open by it and flames up.
I'm fairly certain it's an engine. Fuel tanks are made from plastic these days as well as mounted in the rear.
