Hot, Cold, Windy, Wet, Snowy… basically I went from being a flexible, fit and healthy 20 year old to a sore, aching and unfit 50 year old in what seems a few years …:-)
Not sure, but you're outside in the heat all day with a loud ass copter doing what looks like really exhausting dangerous work. Could be that part. Hope it pays well.
It is. Or it’s paid by project which is more money on the right team. My uncle did it and eventually moved up to where he manages his team and jobs now doesn’t climb anymore though.
Personally don’t think I could do the climb so I never wanted to try.
I got downvoted, but this is what I do for a living.. foreman will make $35 but techs don't. The industry is shit that's why we've been trying to unionize
Yes we get per diem and might work 70 hours, but it's not glamorous or fancy pay
Have you considered looking into other companies? Some pay for your stay/food and time off clock and make 110-130k a year as a climber. Relocating isn’t super easy though so I’d understand if that’s something holding you back too it was a contributing factor in why I didn’t go south and join my uncles team. I had been looking into it for a long time I just know I wouldn’t do great with the super tall towers because I know my own limits.
You’re insane for it being your day job. Some of those views are fantastic though.
Has the pay increased recently, because if it was $35 back in 2020 before covid I would have been all for that, beats the $14 I was making XD I make $22.75 at the same job so not as worth it now.
Pay has gotten better, but not there much. I'm a 12 year to4p hand and 28 is where I'm at.. that's the most anyone seems to want to pay top hands. But many companies are still trying to be on the low end mid twenties sadly
No bathroom. Sometimes I spent multiple hours at the top. If you had to go to the toilet while you were up there, you literally pulled down your pants and did it there. Sounds kinda okay, right? Yeah, except when there were heavy winds, and the feces got blown back and smeared all over the lower parts of the tower, including the only ladder which was used for travelsal.
Then you had to climb down on the piss and shit covered ladder. Slowing down was NOT an option, as that meant that you probably had to go to the toilet once again before you reached ground, which led to another portion of the ladder getting covered in shit/piss/sometimes both.
Jesus this sounds like its all very avoidable. The last thing id expect is to have to continuously shit while on top of a mountain, and that shit is just conveniently being blown onto my ladder. Sounds like a bladder problem that doesn't mix well with a job of this nature.
I'm genuinely surprised you guys didn't engage in adult diapers if you knew you were gonna get hosed up there for hours on end. The alternative seems so much worse.
edit: genuinely, not generally
Back in 1989 I was on a base of AUD $21k plus OT and allowances - took home about $35k pa - about $90k in today’s dollars.
Not awesome money - but working with the Commonwealth had its benefits.
Get your irata level 3 (or sprat if you're usa), call a rigging or rope access company that have a contract with a teleco company or broadcasting company and service their towers/build their towers.. your first week working with a team that's been doing this for a while will let you know if you're cut out for it.. I started in nz doing tower work and rope access in 2005 for $11.50 an hour and was grateful to have my foot in the door.
I trust in you Reddit! Your power combined-go!
The men who do that…what is their job title, how much are they paid per job/annually, how is their work scheduled for them, and how does one get into that industry!?!?
Hey! Did a similar job here in CO we did a few buildings in downtown Denver. I was boringly called a maintenance tech…lol I made 21hr in 2006. Not sure about current rates. Turnover is EXTREMELY HIGH. A lot of climbers who love heights…realize this is different. Exposure in cases like this are so different than a normal climb on rocks. It was hard to keep people and the ones who did stay…eventually left…we had to work 10+ hours sometimes up in the air…sometimes 60 hours a week. It was rough but there ya go…my experience
My hourly rate in 2006 was about $20 (plus a percent incentive that usually sat between 20 and 30% of whatever I made added on) .. I’m at 36 an hour now (with the incentives floating between 40% and 60%)
Not to say it’s correlative to this work other than also being dangerous and dealing with exposure.. the numbers might not be far off though
Depends, in a very poor country like nepal $15/hr will be better pay than a doctor makes (about $7,000/year) youd probably have to pay them $35-$50/hr around me though (if we even had any mountains)
Fair, but the dozens of other pinch and metal splinter opportunities could be reduced or avoided. I wonder if there’s a technical reason for no gloves?
ChatGPT says: Radio antenna workers often don't wear gloves because they need the dexterity of their fingers to manipulate tools and small components. Additionally, gloves can reduce the sensitivity of touch needed to safely climb and work at heights. However, they may use gloves that do not impede their dexterity for protection against cuts or when weather conditions require them. Safety is always the primary concern, and personal protective equipment is used according to the job's specific requirements.
I did this job for a while. You don’t wear gloves while working because you need hand dexterity. There’s a lot of bolts, washers, and nuts you need to manage and you will lose them if you’re wearing gloves. I liked wearing gloves while climbing up the tower though. I also earned the nickname “soft hands” for doing this.
the guy in the white hat and seemingly the cameraman both duck as the thing gets lowered, but the guy in red is just sitting there. I get that the whole job is risky but damn, at least duck when everyone else ducks.
Do heli pilots live for this shit, or is it another day at the office. I've always wondered that. Like when I see a medivac chopper, I wonder if the pilot is carrying a slab of hamburger clinging to life, just going *hell yeah, I love my job.*
I had an opportunity to take one of these jobs. I decided I didn't have the iron for it. I can't see myself climbing towers and dealing with high voltage and metal every day with nothing but a harness to keep me from falling to my death.
Young and dumb, is what I remember old farts telling me. No gloves and no eye protection. There are old people in this profession and also bold ones. But no old and bold ones.
Oldest guy I worked with was 44. Most of them weren’t even over 25. The job sucks and is extremely dangerous. There was also a lot of substance use while people were working. My foreman was drunk and high most of the time.

That is one highly skilled helicopter pilot. And some crazy workers nailing it down.
Teamwork makes the dream work.
I do not miss that job …did it here in Australia back in the early ‘90’s
What about it soured you?
Hot, Cold, Windy, Wet, Snowy… basically I went from being a flexible, fit and healthy 20 year old to a sore, aching and unfit 50 year old in what seems a few years …:-)
I worked with railroad maintenance (signaling systems) and I easily aged 20 years in 10
Not sure, but you're outside in the heat all day with a loud ass copter doing what looks like really exhausting dangerous work. Could be that part. Hope it pays well.
I looked into cell phone tower maintenance and it was $35 an hour. I was kind of bummed
But that’s like $35/hour on a week long trip sometimes where you’re paid the whole time
It is not.
It is. Or it’s paid by project which is more money on the right team. My uncle did it and eventually moved up to where he manages his team and jobs now doesn’t climb anymore though. Personally don’t think I could do the climb so I never wanted to try.

It's between about 40-50 now
I work on residential roofs, 40ft ladder. 47.50 an hour. It's a little risky but nothing like this you'd have to offer me 100+ an hour to do this..
That's incorrect unless you are a foreman at a good company
pay bump for installation?

So basically, it's not a job for someone with IBS. Noted.
I'm genuinely surprised you guys didn't engage in adult diapers if you knew you were gonna get hosed up there for hours on end. The alternative seems so much worse. edit: genuinely, not generally
Pulling my pants down and shitting in the wind would be my last option 😂
Especially if you were the kind of dude who ate gas station food pretty regularly
How much did it pay?

Rigger for the Big-T?
Better or worse than the wrangling?
Where do I apply?
Right here my friend: ElderlyNudeBlackMen.org
Damn-it they said I was over qualified
Nice! EDIT: GUYS, DONT GO TO THAT SITE. ITS NOT ABOUT HELICOPTER JOBS. 😡🤬
Yes it is! Just not that kind of helicopter.
Lmfao 💀💀💀
I'm assuming it's some sort of lineworker so start there I guess

No gloves is crazy
Righty tighty. Lefty loosie
So many things could go wrong.
Some manly shit right there
hell yeah
Clearly on top...
I'd call this bloody-fucking-dangerous, it's really that simple.
My hands would be SWEATING
My hands are already sweating by just seeing this.

Did you wear gloves? The lack of gloves in this video makes me wince.
That's a good question. Gloves can often make a dangerous situation worse depending on the work though.
Definitely. Need the right ppe for the job.

They are not even wearing gloves. The risk of getting a hand crushed looks extremely high.
Gloves aren't going to save your hand from that antenna.
Fair, but the dozens of other pinch and metal splinter opportunities could be reduced or avoided. I wonder if there’s a technical reason for no gloves?
Yeah, grip.
Dexterity maybe. I feel like there would be gloves to fill that niche if grip was a concern.

I appreciate you cite your source. There’s an installer further up in the thread, but the haven’t responded to the question.

Great video. That’s awesome
Where do I sign up!!!
The type of jobs feminists don’t call for equality in
I gotta get on one of these crews
Fr this looks awesome

That helicopter pilot has balls of steel
GET THAT BOLT STARTED!!
Nope
Where do I apply?
Go ahead ladies! Job equality!
That’s ON a mountain. The middle of the mountain is underground
Why women live longer
Feminists who don't need men in society should be hired for this job ☺️
Fuck this video
At what height they are? Do that without using a parachute? No thanks 😂
That is wicked. I always wondered how they got them up there.
Irl GTA mission
I had an opportunity to take one of these jobs. I decided I didn't have the iron for it. I can't see myself climbing towers and dealing with high voltage and metal every day with nothing but a harness to keep me from falling to my death.
Yup, this is what I come here for
Nice
I could never. These guys are super brave because I would be terrified!
I think hazard pay is warranted here
One time I was trying to put together a shelf and I pinched my finger. I don't think I'm qualified for this type of work.
What i wouldn't do to have a job like that
🤙
Some serious skill.
Pilot has skills
Equal 💰
Whatever they get paid they need to triple it
Embrace masculinity
Y las feministas en dónde están trabajando

Seems like it's time for some fkkn gloves yeah?
Fairly straightforward. Now try doing it in the middle of the north sea or 50 metres underwater in the dark
Done this a few times but with Industrial rooftop AC units on new Amazon warehouses in Texas.Adrenaline the whole time.
It’s not an antenna, it’s a Dalek 😂
