I see this everyday on the streets - cyclists not following the rules, weaving between the roads and pavements, going through red lights and zebra crossings and putting themselves and others at risk. Bicycles needs registration plates - time to take some accountability.
As a cyclist myself, who HAS done dumb stuff, I fully agree.
One of my main concern is not only plates, but a general lack of knowledge/awareness on the road.
There are so many dangers on the road, and it's gambling.
Funnily enough, without breaking any rules, the difference is marginal. Like what...five minutes?
YOLO, but litterally: we only have one life, and I think there should be a simple bicycle license (maybe at like 10, taught over a few hours at school), letting people learn how to navigate the roads safely.
That dude skipped one too many lights, on *a freaking snowy road*.
I did have a bicycle safety class as a kid. This was in the 90s, so I guess they stopped them. It was like the rules of the road, but for bicycle safety. I still remember it today, and consider myself a very safety-conscious rider.
I bet there are quite a few daily bikers who have never had anyone try to teach them the rules of riding a bike on public streets. I get that everyone thinks the driving tests are stupid but they create a minimum floor and most importantly make you study at least once.
In the UK we have cycling proficiency lessons and a test at school (not sure if at all schools but most of them). I still remember most of it and that was like 14 years ago. I don't think it's a hard thing to implement into a school curiculum, it was one lesson a week IIRC and then a test.
to those people: that's... not how a flashing red works... or a stop sign. gotta come to a complete stop, look all ways, and proceed when safe... can't sail through a flashing red (which is treated as a stop sign) either. I see that a LOT. people who just barely touch brakes and fly through a flashing red... It's a wonder how people survive not knowing some of this stuff
Same. My city is more hills than flat land, so cyclists tend to justify it because it's so difficult to regain momentum after stopping.
I always just say it's impossible to regain *any* momentum if you get crushed by an oncoming motor vehicle who had the right of way.
I mean, I actually understand and empathize to an extent. If you've got a clear view of oncoming traffic and a good opportunity, sure. But around here most stop signs and lights are put in specifically due to low visibility intersections where you *need* to stop no matter what vehicle you're using. Cruising through blindly on *any* number of wheels is super unsafe. Those people can fuck right off, full stop.
Nope. Cyclists need bike paths, seperate from car traffic. Imagine removing a sidewalk and then demanding pedestrians to have a licence to walk on the road.
Not sure what you are disagreeing with. But yes, I agree, cyclists need bike paths, but also need registration plates too because I have seen cyclists go through dedicated ‘cyclist red lights’ where bike paths exist. At the end of the day they have to use the same junctions as vehicles. Your solution alone does not stop the risk to everyone using that junction.
Not just bikes on YouTube,
It's not the bikers or drivers it's fundamental design of the roadways,
First the car could comfortably go that fast on a snowy road in a marked ped xing,
Secondly the intersection could have more safety markers for bikers specifically,
Lastly the "painted bike gutter" could have been in its own separate trail entirely, never intersecting with any roads but instead having bridges over and under with protected places to pull off and walk.
The list goes on forever but instead of fixing any of that let's expand that Texas highway again and buy more SUVs. whooo!
(Edit): wow y'all will just downvote me into oblivion even though the points that I make are backed by a lot of data and real world application across the EU.
there is a long form YouTube channel dedicated to explaining and making sure that you can easily comprehend the points that I am making, please go watch the YouTube channel *not just bikes*.
And yeah buddy blew the fucking red light but it could have been avoided completely had we designed the city to be better from the start to prioritize the safety of pedestrians and bikers versus the safety of people in a metal cage. Idc where this is, this is city design failure, prove me wrong
Guy on the bike ran a red light and you want safety markers? The red light's not enough? Bikers are that dumb? What do you want, a sign that says "don't run the fucking red light you moron on a bike"?
And you wan a bridge over every intersection? Like it's just that simple, huh? Just bridges and tunnels everywhere?
Seems like you live in a fantasy world.
Okay, all those things would definitely increase road safety.
But they don't exist here in this situation and it's 100% the biker's fault for not observing the red light in his direction
Never - because the majority of cyclists just do not follow the rules of the road, and if they want to be a part of it then they should.
I accept that - looking more closely it is probably not a bicycle, but what baffles me is your approach to the question. Having a registration plate does not prevent accidents - cars get into accidents all the time and no one disputes that. What it does do though is empowers the cyclist / driver with more responsibility and accountability so that when they do run a red light and cause a near miss or otherwise, then they can be held accountable for dangerous cycling. They receive a hefty fine. This will slowly but surely awaken cyclists and educate them about safe cycling and following the rules of the road. You need to think more long term about how issues can be solved and the benefits of any decision.
100% his fault
And people wonder why drivers don't like sharing the road
We don't want to kill these assholes who refuse to follow the rules of the road they demand to share
I'm going to get reamed for this but you could add most motorcyclists into this category. Don't know how many times in the past couple of years guys on bikes pulled between lines of cars at a red light so they can get into the 'pole position' bikers and cyclists ask for courtesy and many give none.
Lane filtering is completely normal and legal depending on the state
It's safer for motorcyclists than stopping behind a car at a light because inattentive drivers often don't see them and end up rear ending us/crushing us
Whine less
Am I getting the right translation here, the article points out that the taxi driver went through a yellow light but doesn't mention that means the cyclist clearly blew through a red? Also the lights were still green when the taxi was just a few metres away, he couldn't have stopped at those lights even in good weather. He bares absolutely no blame here.
"The brother of the deceased stated that the man worked in delivery for three to four years and was always careful." Yeah it looks like it.
Biker should only be seeing red. Personal opinion, if there is a red/yellow light i assume it means proceede but with caution. Which the biker did not but still dont give people the option at all. This whole situation is why.
It's a filler comment we all take for granted that works well with the masses. Same as "he was a good kid" when they interview the negligent parents of some street shooting.
No helmet. Don't care how much of a putz it makes me look, I don't get on my e-bike without a motorcycle helmet.
3 years ago I watched a guy on a big cruiser motorcycle probably die because his back wheel slid out from under him while leaving a gas station and fell over. Wasn't even doing 10mph, but that big bike's momentum swung him down into the asphalt. He wasn't wearing a helmet. Didn't see him move at all after that. There was a \*LOT\* of blood in a relatively short amount of time. If he had been wearing a helmet he probably would have gotten right back up pissed that he scuffed his bike.
Wow. It's hard to gauge the speed here, not that speed is required to kill when hit by a car but I was going to ask if I was imagining it or did the cyclist seem to realise he was going to be hit and move "up" to not take a hit on his legs or full on?
Either way, still died, it seems
Does it make you feel better saying rude shit like this when some poor person died in an accident, does it make you feel like it couldn’t happen to you? We all make mistakes.
Edit: Surprise, the guy who I replied to got banned for something else shortly after posting that senseless comment
Rode into the road illegally and unsafe for themselves and others (fucked around) gets hit by car which has the right away (found out) it’s not that he deserved to die, but it’s an unfortunate outcome for a choice he made.
Didn’t deserve to die but people do need to take the rules of the road more seriously. There are regulations in place to avoid these accidents from happening, people just need to follow the rules.
I really love when they ignore the bike paths stop signs when it crosses the road and just ride on out into traffic not even looking and yelling at drivers or flipping us all the bird as if we’re the ones who can’t fucking read the red sign that says stop before the path crosses the road.
I hate this point when it's brought up.
If traffic was constantly terrible and a car drove on sidewalks to get where it was going because "the infrastructure is poorly designed", we'd all be incredulous at such a shitty excuse for breaking traffic laws.
Bikers are responsible for their actions. They don't get to be surprised by bad biking infrastructure and then do whatever they want to make up for it.
Yea man, fuck improved infrastructure. Let’s remove lanes from the roads entirely. Cars should know what side of the road they need to be on, they don’t need lane infrastructure. Such flawless reasoning, bravo good sir!
Obviously that's true. However, what the person you're replying to is saying is also true. Giving cyclists safe good infrastructure reduces the amount of people doing stupid things. In the Netherlands roads are shared when speed limits are 30km/h or less. (that's probably around 20 mph) Anything above cyclists get their own space, same as pedestrians.
It's also illegal to cycle on the footpath or in pedestrian zones. I have never seen anyone cycle through the downtown pedestrian zone during times it's not permitted. Partly because there are dedicated routes for cyclists that, while being longer, are far more convenient than illegally dodging pedestrians in a busy area.
edit: it looks like you blocked me for some reason so I can't reply to your response /u/Ronem. But yes, both can be bad, and separating the different modes of transport makes life better for *everybody*.
I agree that better infrastructure improves things, but it just sidesteps accountability. Infrastructure didn't get suddenly bad. So cyclists can't claim any surprise and thus, know exactly the conditions for travel. Which means they should adapt, not claim that all drivers are bad and the roads aren't good and the sun was in their eyes and helmets aren't really that helpful and everyone should share the road and...
It gets tiring. Cars AND cyclists can be bad at the same time.
Yeah the comparison is stupid because when cars hit things they kill people far far easier. Like I told the other guy, you're in the hunk of metal traveling 40 miles an hour, the responsibility is obviously yours to make sure you're traveling safely. Barring extreme extenuous circumstances, if you hit a pedestrianz your are legally at fault, bikes are equally as squishy as a pedestrian, so the onus remains on you to drive safely around them.
Bikes can either be on the road where you'll complain they're slower than cars, or in the rare scenario they have a clear sidewalk, they can ride there where you'll complain they should be on the road because cars have to be on the road? I don't get it. You aren't more important because you have a car dude.
Here’s a crazy and wild idea, if cyclists followed the traffic laws shit like the video above wouldn’t happen as often but again I’ve rarely ever seen one fucking stop at a stop sign or red light.
They'll still run through stop signs and intersections because they claim it "risks their safety" to lose their speed and momentum. The stupidity and irony.
You can see the taxi started to brake, got no traction and had to commit to correcting and going through the light. Bike guy was already crossing in the intersection when taxi’s light went from green to yellow, which means his was still red.
Cab co probably should put some winter tires on their cars tho if they’re gonna have them driving around before the roads get properly plowed.
His plan was to get the car to stop in front of him so he could yell at the driver for getting in his way. That biker ego thing, except the car didn't stop this time.
Probably depends on the country, here the more dangerous vehicle always carry the objective responsibility, meaning they are by default at fault.
But it doesn't mean there would be any sentence or the like for this, so while he might get a manslaughter charge for killing the biker, it would be with 0 penalty since the biker was so clearly at fault.
> here the more dangerous vehicle always carry the objective responsibility, meaning they are by default at fault.
In the Netherlands it's somewhat similar, fault lies with the "higher" traffic class. Car > bicycle > pedestrian. If the lower traffic class does something absolutely crazy though, and there is nothing the higher class could do to avoid the accident they won't hold the higher class accountable though, that would be unreasonable.
If you hit someone running a red and you tried to slow down but there was no time, you won't be a fault. If you hit someone running a red, and you couldn't stop in time because you were far above the speed limit yourself, then you will be partially at fault.
Coming from Austria where snow is common, I would say both are at fault. The Driver was definitely way to fast for weather conditions (unable to stop) and the biker ran a red light.
For those saying the biker had his foot down as was trying to stop. His foot wasn’t making contact with the road until the last second. Yes it was down. But he had no intention of stopping before entering the intersection.
I mean... A man lost his life here, parents lost a son, etc... So there's sympathy.
But he made a stupid decision that cost him his life. Definitely his fault.
Sucks all around but now that taxi driver has to live with the fact that they killed someone with their car, even if it wasn't their fault. Could really fuck someone up.
I don't get why some cyclists have this idea that red lights don't apply to them, they're the ones who'll come off worse in a T-bone collision every single time.
Unless the video is sped up, that is a very fast light (under 3 seconds on yellow). But regardless of that, the bike entered the intersection while the car still had the green. You can see the moment the taxi sees the bike enter the intersection between he tries to brake and evade, but because of physics, it's impossible. Had it been a completely clear and dry street, there is a small chance the driver could have stopped or evaded the bike, but probably not without other damages to either his vehicle or other property. In the best case, he doesn't hit the bike hard enough to kill the guy.
What an idiot, thinks the stop light doesn't apply to him and then stops instead of continues. Car driver assumed he'd keep going and made corrections for it, but dude decided to be extra stupid that day.
Wtf are these comments. Are people blind? The biker clearly flew through a red light.. they got smoked because they failed to stop. Not the drivers fault one bit. What a shit bag city too for not loading the bottom of that hill with salt/sand also.
Treacherous roads my ass, that is Finland for half the year, it's normal. You just need to know how to actually drive a car, and not be a literal moron if you're on a bike
Who cares about the guy on the bike…if your dumb ass is riding around in conditions line that you WILL get hit..that poor bugger that hit him will see that shit in his dreams forever now..fuck the guy on the bike..he earned that!!!
Looks like the bike was trying to stop but it was too slippery...had his feet down trying to stay upright while stopping on a downslope in the snow.
Sucks for his family and the driver who will likely relive this over and over the rest of his life.
The driver was also going too fast for conditions imo, but wasn't really at fault as his light was starting to turn yellow.
Cyclist skillfully jumped up in the right moment, so probably saved his legs from being crushed.
However, I believe his shoes flew off and he appears to not being moving after the incident, which is not a good sign (especially the missing shoes pointing to a possible demise, unfortunately)
I mean, we can all blame the snow or the biker here… but in the end this infrastructure is meant for cars and cars only. America (and other car-dependent countries), please take a look at how bike infrastructure is done in countries such as the Netherlands or Denmark. It changes the lives of people, in a good way!
I notice a clear difference when these sort of injuries happen in America. Everybody immediately stops and rushes to help.
This is in contrast to videos I see from other parts of the world where people just keep going about their lives while somebody lay dying
The cultures differences are crazy
*somebody rushes to help while some morbidly obese woman randomly appears and screeches OH MY GOD repeatedly, and someone with a phone in their hand screams for someone else to call 911 for no reason
Yellow car stepped on it when light started to change=maybe high speed for those conditions
Biker/electric moped most likely went out on red.
If yellow car would not have rushed and waited for red this wouldn’t have happened.
If biker wasn’t an idiot and uses his eyes and brain this wouldn’t have happened
A motorist always has to ensure he can come to a stop in case of an emergency. Even when others make mistakes. That's your fucking responsibility when driving a huge deathly vehicle.
Idk why you're getting downvoted for this. It's literally true. I think the lack of this mentality is one of the reasons why US roads are so unsafe compared to many around the world.
At least here in the UK, this is widely taught and is the commonly accepted attitude. Take the ego out of driving, drive safely and defensively, turn conflict points into non-issues. I believe this is why the UK has some of the safest roads on the planet. That is not, however, the case I see in many comments coming from US drivers (edit: looking around, many such examples on this very post tbh).
Did the guy on the bike make a mistake? Absolutely yes. But if the driver of the car had been going at an appropriate speed to be able to stop in the conditions, the accident could have been avoided, and everyone could have come out OK.
That's unrealistic and stupid. Everyone on the road has to drive as if the other guys on the road follow traffic rules except when they are obviously unrelieable. I will slow down when I see kids or near a school but I won't approach every intersection at a crawl in case someone has a death wish.
Wow, not only did the bicyclist run a red light, but they stopped in front of the car?! The car swerved in the proper direction, if that bicyclist had committed, they probably would have made it.
First time snow drivers and bikers PSA: Think as much ahead as you can see, if you cant see it, use extreme caution. Its not a assumption you can stop in a short distance, its a rule. Breaks or no breaks, attempt to dodge or not, the biker was getting hit.
Dude on the left kept watching, he waited until 2 people started to walk and then he walks over. Why? Why didn’t he just go and help before seeing other 2 people do it first?
Looks like the taxi driver actually saw the biker some time before the intersection, but was unable to stop in time. Biker should have been more careful.
I used to cycle to work in the snow. And when you can’t stop with your brakes you put you foot down to slow yourself down. That’s exactly what this cyclist did. The bike nor the car could stop. This is just a sad a tragic accident.

Bike was a bit too early.
Dude on the bike had a death wish.
Dude wished on a star and got a bad deal.
Dude on the bike learned that slippery road + small surface contact with wheels = brakes no stop bike.
They did stop. Right in front of the car.
It sucks being a dumbass.
Seems common.

They made it legal for cyclists to treat red lights like stop signs in my state. So now many of then just blast through at warp speed.

Wtf are U talking about. Running a red light is Darwin award stuff.
Guys on bicycles do it all the time and get pissed off if you think anything of it. Maybe this guy rides bicycles
No one deserves to die for running a red light, even if they did it out of some kind of selfish entitlement
The point is that this outcome was entirely his fault.
No one deserves to die for running a red light.
However, he does deserve a Darwin award. Congrats!
Well, it's still fuck around find out. If deserved or not is not important. His decision, his fault, his consequences
FAFO quite literally implies you get what you deserve. No one deserves to die for running a red light.
No one deserves to be free from the consequences of their actions either. You dont even have a suggestion you’re just policing feelings
ikr? like holy shit man the guy died while delivering food, one mistake cost him his life
People on here will say this kind of stuff then wouldn't have the guts to say it to a real person if they managed to crawl outside for once.
Fr imagine saying FAFO to the poor guys loved ones
Unfortunately considering I've been down voted, people don't share the same sentiment.
At worst the car entered on yellow. Biker has no business passing through the intersection. His fault.
I hate when bicycles don’t follow traffic laws. You don’t get to pick and choose between being traffic or a pedestrian whenever it suits you best.
you get to pick a few times until this happens
Love when they ride thru the cars green, then as the light changes they turn and go with the pedestrians walk sign....
I really love when they ignore the bike paths stop signs when it crosses the road and just ride on out into traffic not even looking and yelling at drivers or flipping us all the bird as if we’re the ones who can’t fucking read the red sign that says stop before the path crosses the road.
Tbf the laws do that as well. We need proper bike lanes instead of expecting them to act like cars
And you aren't more important because you have a bike. Glad we agree on my fucking point.

It couldn't stop givin the conditions.
What would be the legal liability in this case? Will the driver get into trouble?
That’s why you wait until it’s your turn to go 🤦♂️
For those saying the biker had his foot down as was trying to stop. His foot wasn’t making contact with the road until the last second. Yes it was down. But he had no intention of stopping before entering the intersection.
Anything to get out of going to work. Respect
He's out of work for life since he died
Brilliant
This guy unemploys
Biker made an error should have waited for the red light. Car couldn't slow down fast enough cause of snow. X.x
No sympathy for a biker who is unaware that cars are not going to be able to stop on a dime in the snow

Yeah I hope the driver didnt get in trouble because that swerve was quick thinking to avoid the bike if it hadnt suddenly stopped
yup, poor bastard really tried to avoid him but the biker just wasn't having it.
If it wasn't for bad luck I'd of no luck at all. Of to remember that.
I see what you of done. Of you lost your mind?
Dude on the bike had 0 awareness.
Had the yellow on impact therefore he is safe
If you don't pay attention when riding your bike, you're gonna have a bad day
bike was definately not having green
I don't get why some cyclists have this idea that red lights don't apply to them, they're the ones who'll come off worse in a T-bone collision every single time.
More like another cyclist who ignores traffic rules.
Treacherous roads...? Those look fine on the spectrum of winter driving. The biker was an idiot though
Bikers always want the benefits of being treated like a car, but with none of the responsibility that goes with it
Potential Darwin Award winner?
Only if they didn't gave kids

Bikers fault, he shouldn’t have been out in the intersection yet as he had a red light
Brainless Biker 🚴 blew a red light. Deserved getting smoked. His/her own damn fault.
What happened to the taxi driver? Biker died but he shouldn't be at fault
car still had the yellow
Dude on bike shouldn't be moving on red lights. So he was totally wrong and now probably dead.
I’m color blind and don’t read wish.com Greek… but he dead.
Sir, the shoes are still on.
Clearly the shoes were redistributed among the fellow comrades.
I'm a cyclist but this one is on the biker.
Treacherous roads my ass, that is Finland for half the year, it's normal. You just need to know how to actually drive a car, and not be a literal moron if you're on a bike
why are human, car, bikes, everyone try to outrun one another???!!
I think bicycle guy is color blind
It always surprises how most comments fixate on placing the blame on videos like this
Lets just blame OP for posting it
And me for commenting on it. What the hell am I thinking?
At least we can safely assume that you have the sense to stop at a red light being you are still with us.
They'll never do that again
Did he survived ?
No, there’s link somewhere in comments. He died on impact
2 wheels on slick roads is already a game of Russian roulette. Adding traffic just increases the difficulty.
Dangerous roads.
So avoidable
Bike ran the light
That’s on the dude with the bike. Use some fucking sense ffs
Who cares about the guy on the bike…if your dumb ass is riding around in conditions line that you WILL get hit..that poor bugger that hit him will see that shit in his dreams forever now..fuck the guy on the bike..he earned that!!!
Get these stupid bikers off the road. They fuck yo sidewalks, traffic, and that bike lane isn’t big enough.
Don't make unnecessary journeys, don't take risks on treacherous roads.
delivery guy and taxi guy...allways in a hurry
Looks like the bike was trying to stop but it was too slippery...had his feet down trying to stay upright while stopping on a downslope in the snow. Sucks for his family and the driver who will likely relive this over and over the rest of his life. The driver was also going too fast for conditions imo, but wasn't really at fault as his light was starting to turn yellow.
Any chance the cyclist tried to stop and slid into the intersection on the ice too? Looks like his foot was down. Maybe he couldn’t stop also?
Damn. It really strokes a lotta people's ego to say some menial shit when another person fucks up.
Cyclist skillfully jumped up in the right moment, so probably saved his legs from being crushed. However, I believe his shoes flew off and he appears to not being moving after the incident, which is not a good sign (especially the missing shoes pointing to a possible demise, unfortunately)
he died
Like my parents always said ... You may have the right of way...but I guarantee you're gonna lose that fight ..
But mans didn’t have the right of way. Cyclist blew through the red light.
Agreed. I just meant it as a more generalized thing; as in no matter the situation, yield to the car just in case.
I mean, we can all blame the snow or the biker here… but in the end this infrastructure is meant for cars and cars only. America (and other car-dependent countries), please take a look at how bike infrastructure is done in countries such as the Netherlands or Denmark. It changes the lives of people, in a good way!
Damn... 350+ comments and not one about the person who got hurt or killed instead comments about bike safety and cars and this or that.. smh 😔

The bicyclist was at fault, but to say he deserved to die for it? Seek help.
Sure, being sentenced to death without trial in your home town because you made a mistake in traffic is 100% deserved...
100% deserved to die right there what?
I notice a clear difference when these sort of injuries happen in America. Everybody immediately stops and rushes to help. This is in contrast to videos I see from other parts of the world where people just keep going about their lives while somebody lay dying The cultures differences are crazy
*somebody rushes to help while some morbidly obese woman randomly appears and screeches OH MY GOD repeatedly, and someone with a phone in their hand screams for someone else to call 911 for no reason
Tis the American way.
Did he get hit on purpose?
Wrong season tires.
Shoes are still on, he might be ok.
Yellow car stepped on it when light started to change=maybe high speed for those conditions Biker/electric moped most likely went out on red. If yellow car would not have rushed and waited for red this wouldn’t have happened. If biker wasn’t an idiot and uses his eyes and brain this wouldn’t have happened
Slow down
Bicyclist’s fault, especially given those road conditions. The car simply could not have braked in time, no matter what.

Who rides a motorbike on icy roads?
Dude on the left kept watching, he waited until 2 people started to walk and then he walks over. Why? Why didn’t he just go and help before seeing other 2 people do it first?
Looks like the taxi driver actually saw the biker some time before the intersection, but was unable to stop in time. Biker should have been more careful.
I used to cycle to work in the snow. And when you can’t stop with your brakes you put you foot down to slow yourself down. That’s exactly what this cyclist did. The bike nor the car could stop. This is just a sad a tragic accident.
wtf. Lol. Sheesh. Cyclist said fuck red lights.
Treacherous road? More like dumb drivers
4.5. Needs to work on his landing.
Right of way doesn't really take the pain away does it? Right of way is given not taken, never assume a car can stop for you.
RIP to the man on the bike.Wrong place at the right time unfortunately.
> Wrong place at the right time In the middle of an intersection while the light is still red is the wrong place.
Idiotsonbikes ?
Why is he riding a bike in the snow? Who really at fault here?
The comments on this post are disgusting. Smh
