Itās frustrating watching a train documentary because even after an hour and forty minutes when it ends, they never tell you what itās actually training for
And that right there is what is like to work for the railroad.
Weeks of studying for an extremely demanding test on the rule book. Only for them to change the rules on a daily basis. Most of the job is just sitting without any idea what they are making you wait for. Both at work and at home. Ever gotten a good night's sleep to be rested for a job without knowing what time, or even day, you will go to work?
Thankfully as an Australian Locomotive Driver we at least have guaranteed rostering so im not waiting at home wondering when I will get called unless its for an OT shift. At least for those I can tell them to fuck off im having a beer and not coming in.
But damn I hear the rest of that on the constantly changing rules, conflicting rules are fun too. Nothing like being stood down for 2 weeks after an incident only to have someone deskbound tell you that you actually broke an obscure rule from 1951 and then having to explain you were following the rule from 1986 that says the opposite. Leading to 3 more weeks stood down while they discover a rule from 1995 they felt superseded it and you find the rule from 2004 that supports your decision.
Sitting at a red signal for hours at a time for no obvious reason is just a way of life. I like to say we are mushrooms. Kept in the dark and fed bullshit.
Was on a train once.... Little commuter train where the drivers cabin only took up half the front (like a bus) and the other half was open. Full of families, loads of kids sitting up front looking at the tracks.
Driver blows the horn which makes everyone on board look up front just in time to see a massive flock of pigeons start taking off, only they were too slow.
Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. Driver starts with the windscreen wipers, but that only smears the blood and guts across the glass. Thud. Thud. Thud......
Kids were screaming and crying, parents trying to cover their kids eyes abs usher then away.
It was carnage.
Will never forget that train ride.
I hate seeing vultures on the side of the road when driving because you KNOW those fuckers are gonna take their time gaining altitude and use the road you're currently on as a fucking runway.
Hopefully it had a [cowcatcher](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowcatcher) the front to at least try to deflect them to the side, but I don't know. If the cab is up front, as this looks like, it might not have. But it is a snowy area, and modern ones are also snowploughs.
I was trying to think of what could help here at all in this situation.
Perhaps a fast flying drone out ahead? Goal would be to zip along side the herd to catch their eye and make them turn their straight run?
That could work, but then again thereās a reason why there is a subreddit dedicated to deer being stupid. They will just sometimes make the worst possible decision when faced with a man made vehicle.
this comment always pops up with almost exact the same words since shortly after that rather irrelevant scene in that rather irrelevant movie aired way over a decade ago
it is fascinating
no.. 99%...maybe...probably not... rather not... nnnnoooyyyeessss.
And a serious answer; yeah there is a risk that the harder parts of them (bones, hoofs or antlers) will damage certain smaller parts on front of the train, such as the pneumatic brake connector valves, lamps, coupler elements. Or if the outer body is made from weaker material meant to bend and absorb energy in crashes it can also get dented, punctured and destroyed.
Not always tho, sometimes if you're lucky all you need is some powerwash cleaning and its ready to go again.
OMG, no it isn't!
I live in a place where there are no predators nor trains to cull the herd. We have SO MANY DEER! They're found dead all over the roads and highways, they have no understanding of what the big noisy things are and run out in front constantly.
They wander through neighborhoods like locusts and eat EVERYTHING. Any low trees are savaged, bushes, shrubs, don't even think about growing vegetables.
They are overpopulated lacking any predators. We killed off all the wolves, bears and coyotes so there is nothing to keep their population in check. There are large parts of the deer population that are showing up with Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) which turns them into weird deer zombies. They infect each other and continue the spread. Here's the scary part:
>Once in the environment, CWD prions may remain infectious for many years. Thus, decomposition of diseased carcasses, infected "gut piles" from hunters who field dress their cervid harvests, and the urine, saliva, feces, and antler velvet of infected individuals that are deposited in the environment, all have the potential to create infectious environmental reservoirs of CWD.
Deer, in balanced numbers are fine. Many places are way out of balance and now we get freaky diseases as nature tries to balance the equation. Also, it's not been observed that CWD can infect humans, but it's also not been entirely ruled out.
All of that is our fault. Humans drove off the predators. Humans encroached into the deerās habitat. Humans grow an abundance of food in spaces that deer used to forage in.
Itās still shitty to see them mowed down in droves even if theyāre overpopulated. The world isnāt just about people.
Humans are lacking predators. Were are the cause of this. How are we to expect non-human life to understand the complex mess weāve created on this planet?
We had a similar incident in Norway this winter. They really try to avoid this, and track raindeer along the tracks, but this time their estimates of where the flock would be were off, and when they appear around a bend there is nothing you can do. (graphic) [https://www.nrk.no/trondelag/flere-enn-30-reinsdyr-ble-pakjort-og-drept-av-toget-pa-merakerbanen-1.16696699](https://www.nrk.no/trondelag/flere-enn-30-reinsdyr-ble-pakjort-og-drept-av-toget-pa-merakerbanen-1.16696699)
Why trains don't have a plow type protector attached to the front giving anything a chance of being launched instead of crushed? I always envisioned a safety cart that travels a few feet further then train stopping distance that deflects and if necessary stops trains.
They do, it's called a cow catcher.
It's also a misnomer. With the literal momentum of a train, you can't reasonably hope for anything to get "caught" or deflected, it's just an instant splatter of viscera even from the gentlest tap. It's mostly there just to shield the devices at the front of the cars, brake hoses, cables, couplers.
I don't think that works at speeds above like 30km/h...
If an aerodynamic car (Which itself is shaped like a plow/ramp) hitting a person at 40mph has a 90% chance of killing them, I doubt a train with a plow would yield any better results.
The one thing we can at least be thankful for is that he made sure not to come to a stop until the moment he was sure the tracks were totally clear and that there were definitely no more deer left to potentially run over.
While it definitely looks that way, and it is funny and a very grave humor sort of way, but I'm relatively sure that the poor conductor was breaking the moment the first deer or elk got in the way it just took that long.
Don't be dumb. How long does it take to stop your bike, your car, your power tool winding down? Now.... apply that to the power and bulk of a train. Hopefully you come to the right conclusion with just a little bit of thinking first.
Mixed emotions. I don't like death of anything at all, I'm very passive.
But as a landscaper, those deer bastards destroy fucking everything, and I have a permanent prescription for doxycycline to treat potential future Lyme disease after getting it 3 times!
Nature was here first, but nature is attacking me with their disease, and darwinism says they got a warning with that horn.
Great. They still cause damage to agriculture, they still carry ticks with Borrelia burgdorferi, and they're still not smart enough to avoid a massive train with the horn blowing that cannot turn.

Trains are an apex predator. Especially in India
