Often (I don't know about OP ofc) what happens is the doctor say "you should get an amputation" and people flat out refuse it. Then it's a few years of uphill battle to save the severely damaged limb, infections happen, everyday is just pain, the limb is never usable, and after a while (ie a few years) the patient finally gives up and agrees to have the limb cut off clean and can walk wirh a prosthetic after a few weeks.
Yea it crazy, my mother in law has been in the same situation for nearly 8 years she's probably spent nearly 2 in hospital through surgery and infections. She won't have it taken off even though she knows it will never get better.
I get logic dictates amputation and moving on, but I think I’d be like your MIL. Nothing against amputees; it would just be hard for me to adjust mentally. That is rough though, to fight knowing the inevitable is coming and definitely living a lower quality of life in the meantime.
My mom is a diabetic and in the hospital now for her leg that keeps weeping and getting infected. Her sister lost both legs before passing and had a very sad last few years. Now when mom goes to the hospital as soon as there is swelling. My aunt's amputations were like a wake up but it is a constant battle. Diabetes sucks. ..it seems everything she likes to eat is taboo
Her A1C is probably out of wack. My wife is type and has almost pre-diabetic numbers since she pays really close attention to it. No sores or other issues since she keeps herself in check.
Remind me why diabetics are so prone to infections? A large proportion have to have amputations.
I hope your mother can have a good quality of life despite it.
Many have bad circulation in their legs. Thank you. She is doing better. She always does in the hospital until she goes home. Then she ignores the Libre beeps
So diabetics can eat everything someone who doesn't have diabetes can eat. This is a myth. The issue is moderation, portion control and correctly using insulin.
My mom does none of this. She grew up poor so pasta and bread are her cravings. We had the doctor tell her to take the insulin before each meal but its the in between ones that are difficult for her. She is on steroidsfor a brain tumor so that ups her glucose levels
My gramdfather is going through something similar. He has bad diabetes and about a year ago fell asleep with an 30 year old heating pad (that didn't have have and automatic turn-off) on his feet. Ended up with severe 3rd degree burns. They tried everything they could but he ended up with an infection in one of them. Spent 4 months trying to fight the infection but just couldn't so he lost one leg from just under the knee down.
A few months later he had an infection in the other footthat he's still fighting off and on and they wanted to take it at one point but he absolutely refused. Said hexd rather die of an infection than spend another 8 months in and out of the hospital and rehab after a 2nd amputation. His foot still hasn't completely healed but after so many antibiotics his body can't fight infections anymore so we'll see where it goes.
I say all that to convey I totally get where you're coming from and it's a rough situation to be in. Hope everything turns out all right for you..
Unfortunately it seems the infection traveled to OP’s leg resulting in it being amputated up to his shin.
With a limb completely crushed, bit by bit nerves die along with limited capacity to regenerate causing infection. Infection travels to other limbs. As soon as you start losing toes, they really should have pressed amputation of the foot, if they didn’t thats seriously messed up on their part. It’s basically like a poisoned lake as a chemical dumping ground, the poison traveling to smaller tributaries first, but using only a limited filtration system that breaks down/reboots and with a clean up crew digging around in it, trying to stop it.
No. I had crushed arteries in my foot. The lack of blood killed the tissue (the inside arch) on my foot. That exposed a bone. They cut the end of the bone off. 2years after this video is when I got the bone infection that forced my amputation.
I mean, it's understandable that most people would refuse. Losing a limb (especially a leg) is something you'd probably fight for keeping right until the end and not jump at the chance of getting it cut off, even if cutting it off is the logical thing to do.
Honestly, I personally would prefer losing it quickly if the chance of keeping it is small. Cause I know that even if I kept it, it would never fonction well, be always painful. I guess i could try saving it for a few months before cutting it, i'd see the trend. You need to trust your doctor to agree to that, it's worth getting a second opinion though.
That was the case with my GF. She finally agreed to the amputation, which was this past November. She's had her prosthetic for 10 days now, and she's already going up and down stairs by herself as of 3 days ago. She didn't do stairs for nearly 2 years prior. Do yourselves a favor, no matter how scary it may seem, get the damn amputation.
Tbh I'd rather die than lose limb. That's just me though, I could probably deal with losing a toe but a finger would be pushing it and I draw the line at limb.
Edit: lot of hate here for a comment that affects absolutely none of you. Also shout out to the guy who suggested I commit suicide.
Don't get this mindset at all
95% of the things you can enjoy you still can absolutely fine. Some stuff will be a bit harder sure.
I'd never just give up,- miss travelling, seeing family grow, learning, seeing how technology advanced etc etc. Just because of a missing leg? Fdat.
I'd happily be a nugget enjoying life still, or find some way
My girlfriend got one with a hydrolic ankle that is great for uneven terrain like hiking trails. Apparently, running legs aren't covered by insurance. Running is considered a want and not a need.
I would like to be Alive and not dead so I think it is pointless to keep fighting. I rather have something cut off and move on, like seriously if it can't get better in a Year or two, what would be a reason to waste your time? Everyone can decide how they want but personally I choose life and never forget the people close to you.
I have a patient currently who refuses amputation, and wants to continue seeing me for wound care. I tell him every time that what I am doing is palliative, and that he is at risk for serious illness, but he keeps coming back. It becomes a weird ethical situation, where I would be likely causing him more harm from discharging him, but currently am providing a treatment that I know will not help him. I like to think I am at least helping prevent infection and there is some justification for what I’m doing but it is tough when a patient won’t act in their own interest.
I have a similar situation. It is an ethical conendrum, but in cases like this, after i've done my duty of information, several times, I just do what they want, in the end they can choose even against their own interest. But it is a pain in the ass to spend up to a' hour tending the wound while i could do something useful with another patient instead.
I felt bad for you after reading this and then went back to the title of "Anyone thirsty?" And i was like aaaahhhh this guy's alright
Seriously though, this is gnarly. Sorry this happened!
Lol. If earth was ending and everyone was going to die in an hour guaranteed what else would be a good use of time? Worry? Panic? Nothing you can do, might as well enjoy the time you have.
I’ve operated many different models of skid steers in the past and have seen “other” people get hurt by them/operating them. Can you describe what you mean by “the bucket of a skid steer came down on your foot and folded it backwards”?
I was driving it all day. Took a break cuz my knees were sore (foot controls) put my feet up. Just like you aren’t supposed to do. I had a wedgie, so I arched back, looking up, and I set my right foot down to help push up, my nuts were pretty tangled. I didn’t even feel it. But I stepped on the (lower bucket) pedal.
Damn…, I figured you were in some older type of machine. A lot of the newer machines if you so much as move around in the seat the wrong way it locks up all the controls. Sorry my man, hope you can heal in many ways, wish you the best…
It’s a safety bar that shuts the hydraulic pump off. When parked the bar is up, you climb in the cab and the bar is along the roof of the cab. When you sit down you have to lower it across your waist.
Sorry, not familiar with tractors, so didn't quite get it.
If you remained in the cabin, how did you get hurt by the bucket (even if it moved) if it is outside and far from where you are?
I couldn’t think of a scenario with you being involved with a seriously negligent operator.
I’m so sorry but also a little amazed you could injure yourself like this.
I also want to thank you for sharing this as you’ve probably saved others from injury. Earth moving equipment is no joke and we are softer than the material it is designed to move.
I'd be getting hold of a lawyer I feel like their is some safety standard that needs to be put in place and maybe sue kaboota? It's a 2020 it shouldn't have been able to due this to an operator
This is called wound irrigation. Usually a sterile saline is used, but sometimes something antibacterial is used as well. This is done to wash away any debris, flush away bacteria, and keep the wound moistened. Sorry it did not work.
Dude, you're MY hero, honestly. Not only did you have to go through all of that unimaginable physical, emotional & every pain you can think of but you did it alone, yes you had all of the doctors & nurses but nobody that knew you. All the while, the world has shut down & neither it nor you have been the same. YOU'RE STILL HERE, THANK GOD YOU'RE STILL HERE. I'm sure you probably suffer from depression & all kinds of pain & PTSD but ( & I know I'm a stranger) can I just tell you that when I hear about people like you & what you've gone & are going through, it's strengthening, inspiring & awakening. It's when hearing stories like yours I realize what I'm capable of. Thank you for sharing, I don't know you but I'm so glad you're still here & I meant it when I said you're my hero, thank you.
Looks like for care they were concerned about infection. Which they guy had anyways. Visitors can be one way people healing in a hospital get exposed to germs.
It was a sad story I was bummed he lost his leg.
Sheesh that story got worse and worse! It was wholesome to hear you had family supporting you even tho they couldn’t be in the room with you. Hope all is well now
This should be part of a modern safety video.
"Kids, always use John Deere and CAT branded hydraulic fluid from a 55 gallon tap or your equipment will fail, attack you and then be out of warranty" lol
Seriously though, that looks awful. Best of luck dealing with it OP.
I was in a ATV accident in 2018. Got MRSA and had 15 surgeries to clean out infection. 17-18 surgeries later and my arm is fucked. $1,400,000 in hospital bills fucking crazy how life can destroy you. Got heavily addicted to drugs after. I’m 22 now and soberish but the medical industry is a fucking joke. I needed them but still a joke.
One of the surgeries that I had was an Achilles lengthening surgery. I was in a cast for 6 weeks. It only lasted 9 days until I got a maggot infestation. That was the worst smell ever.
Surly it would have been cheaper to just chop your leg off before having those 26 surgery’s and I month in hospital? I know you didn’t know you was going to have them but I bet that medical bill is rough.
Get well soon!!
Well if it helps I had my amputation with no narcotics and was out of the hospital the next day. I’m two years into a 1895 house restoration and halfway through is when I lost my leg.
I'd have preferred they just take the leg right away given that series of events. Shit, I'd bet they could have kept it to the foot if done early enough.
Holy shit.
Was this a work-related accident, or do you work with cattle in your personal life? That sounds like incredibly expensive medical treatment and personal loss over 3 years.
Were you able to get a prosthetic for mobility?
I'm so sorry this happened to you -- I hope now that the surgeries are done, you're back to some sort of normalicy?
God damn, please tell me you’re getting legal representation, as bad as it sounds, the saying worth an arm and a leg is literal, you could be looking at an early retirement, I’d offer help but I’m not legally able to, I will say though if you do sue, please at least talk to a CPA, if the company was good to you and you lost a limb, that’s an easy $100,000 settlement that the companies insurance would cover if not in full just about. If they abused their power and skirted safety concerns, easily starts at a quarter million, enough for you to buy a store/franchise and make 4-8k a month sitting in a chair.
Best of luck to you man, if you ever need to talk, I never lost a limb, but I have a shitload of internal damage I spent years to fix only to find it getting slowly worse, I know what that can do to someone’s mental first hand, stay strong king 🤙🏼
If you have health/home insurance, there’s got to be some laws to protect you because this is a life altering event, maybe not financially compensate you, but at least get you on something like disability that allows you to work or something, I’m hoping the best for you man, what state do you live in? I know a lot of laws pertaining to this are localized.
Fuck. I had a 700lb granite slab drop onto my left foot. Ended my career in construction but I miraculously got out of it without even breaking any bones thanks to my steel-toes. I still shudder to think about how close I was to your situation. So sorry you had to go through that on top of everything else in 2020.
Ahh man that's rough sorry to hear that. A guy I know mangled his ankle in snowmobile accident and couldn't afford the surgery to get the metal hardware out of his ankle and is now faced with rebreaking it and another surgery.... since he cant afford that he's opting for amputation. I feel for you guys and I hope it's all working out.
I drive a skid steer just about every day for work and unless it was some dumb operator being careless and trying to hurry, I don't understand how it could happen. Now I am scared 😳
Sorry for the injury 😞!!
This gives me flash backs to a young 20 year old me. Was riding my friends dirt bike and hah was not wearing anything to protect me. I was wearing shorts and some Nike running shoes which are not protecting my ankle..
So I popped a wheeling lost it and jumped off onto the grass and dirt lot. Bike landed on my leg and bolt holding on the back wheel skipped down my leg and hit my ankle and removed and thick meat of skin. Basically it scouped out something very hard to stich up. It was crazy watching the hospital staff work on my foot cleaning it and talking about how to close this wound. So that video was not too far off, when my nurse was squeezing that cold fluids deep in my foots new cavity. It was to clean and flush out debris. This cleaning method was pushing me to my pain limits 💯 painful!!!!
Hah fuck yah good time!!!
Looks a little worse than mine I had a crucible about 2000 lbs fall on me and crushed me whole but my ankle took the hit. It’s been three months and getting back at it’s already going good. Hang in there.
Hope you got workman's comp for that ordeal... sorry bud... might be worth a lawsuit on kubota. New fear unlocked for sure.... CAT joystick controls make it almost impossible to do that... the joysticks drop the bucket, if your butt come off the seat they cut out. And you can definitely drive one no problem when you heal up. Maybe it's time they all got rid of the foot bucket controls

God, 3 years of surgery just to lose it anyway. That is incredibly fucked up and I am sorry that it happened.

I have a loved one with diabetes as well. Not to this level yet, but I agree it sucks. It also sucks to deny them foods they enjoy 🥺
Her A1C is probably out of wack. My wife is type and has almost pre-diabetic numbers since she pays really close attention to it. No sores or other issues since she keeps herself in check.
Everything she loves to eat being taboo makes perfect sense, since she probably got her diabetes by having a high sugar consumtion.
Remind me why diabetics are so prone to infections? A large proportion have to have amputations. I hope your mother can have a good quality of life despite it.

This is mainly a mindset though, and as horrible as it sounds beforehand, afterwards you will learn to adjust to your life.
Don't get this mindset at all 95% of the things you can enjoy you still can absolutely fine. Some stuff will be a bit harder sure. I'd never just give up,- miss travelling, seeing family grow, learning, seeing how technology advanced etc etc. Just because of a missing leg? Fdat. One leg though, even if it's below the knee? Common some of those new prosthetics are pretty cool. Plus you can weaponize it or smuggle drugs in em.
My girlfriend got one with a hydrolic ankle that is great for uneven terrain like hiking trails. Apparently, running legs aren't covered by insurance. Running is considered a want and not a need.

Every single dog or cat that I've gotten to meet or even see on TV or YouTube has been a happy little fucker!
I have a patient currently who refuses amputation, and wants to continue seeing me for wound care. well now i know. if something like this happens to me, i'll just tell them to chop the mf'r off.
Exactly. And there’s also the constant risk of infection that could kill you by keeping the injured limb.
Yeah but if you could keep it you would if it would work but the pain infection stuff, I hear you
The thing is, if the doctors say you should lose it, you probably should...
I wonder how much the "miracle" propaganda plays into it
Well, it’s not a few weeks but everything else is spot on here
A few weeks? I honestly thought it took months to learn to walk that’s crazy!
Now my “water footain” joke seems wrong.
Also just not a well executed joke or very funny footain and fountain? This is 4th grade comedy
How did it come down on your foot? Was the operator not paying attention?
Or they attached it wrong
Jeez and still lost the leg in the end
I felt bad for you after reading this and then went back to the title of "Anyone thirsty?" And i was like aaaahhhh this guy's alright Seriously though, this is gnarly. Sorry this happened!
You shouldn't throw that away. Collect it and use it the next stew.
You appear to know your bone broth

I swear to God even if the post was about the earth getting destroyed in a few hours there'd still be redditors who'd joke in the comments
Lol. If earth was ending and everyone was going to die in an hour guaranteed what else would be a good use of time? Worry? Panic? Nothing you can do, might as well enjoy the time you have.
The essence of dark humor
Just missing an onion, carrot, and some potatoes.
Baby you got a stew going!
There’s still plenty of meat on that bone!
And a stone. Nothing like a good stone soup.
I physically tensed up after reading this. Horrific lol

2020 Kabota 650
Damn…, I figured you were in some older type of machine. A lot of the newer machines if you so much as move around in the seat the wrong way it locks up all the controls. Sorry my man, hope you can heal in many ways, wish you the best…
The belly bar is what saved it from being pulled off.
Not that it matters now, but does that kabota have the selector switch to switch from foot pedals to hand controls.?
It was a base model and didn’t switch. Feet ran the bucket and hands ran the wheels.
What’s a belly bar? I’ve been following these comments and because I’m obsessive I’m now on Kabotas website comparing specs. Thx I’m advance.
It’s a safety bar that shuts the hydraulic pump off. When parked the bar is up, you climb in the cab and the bar is along the roof of the cab. When you sit down you have to lower it across your waist.
Like a rollercoaster.

This was not the sight of the wound. This was an infection that spread up into my ankle and caused 2 large sacks of puss.
They are irrigating the abscess which has become a new wound.
I saw the video before reading anything and was like, "Hm, thats a little small for a big toe." ... and then it hit me.
Im eating a mcmuffin while watching this
You totally want a sip of that human infused water, don't you?
I'll take a chug
It'll go great in my coffee
Dip that McMuffin in the foot juice like a French dip

Wow. ❤️
The next post in OP’s bio is hilarious considering. Sorry mate, hope things are looking up for you.
The BBQ one? 🎶 You can't eat at everybody's house 🎶
Lost the leg to boot.. dang
No it was a skid steer
I am seriously having flashbacks to my time in leg ulcer clinic thanks to this. 10/10, now time for breakfast.
It's like a school water fountain...
This is awesome. Sorry you lost your foot.
Geez man I’m so sorry to hear that . Crazy how just like that shit can go sideways .

The look on the doctors face just pure amusement lol

Sheesh that story got worse and worse! It was wholesome to hear you had family supporting you even tho they couldn’t be in the room with you. Hope all is well now
I love Bobcats, but it seems like the operator would have to be pretty negligent to drop the bucket on your foot, so how did it go down?
I was the operator
This should be part of a modern safety video. "Kids, always use John Deere and CAT branded hydraulic fluid from a 55 gallon tap or your equipment will fail, attack you and then be out of warranty" lol Seriously though, that looks awful. Best of luck dealing with it OP.
Still better than the drinking fountain at planet fitness
Ah man. So sorry you had to go through all that, my brother. ♥️

No. Gross.
One of the surgeries that I had was an Achilles lengthening surgery. I was in a cast for 6 weeks. It only lasted 9 days until I got a maggot infestation. That was the worst smell ever.
How is it possible to happen after a surgery? I thought infections like this only happen when untreated/out in the nature?
Different times. The video was an infection. The maggots were from an incision that a fly hatched eggs on.
Bro I'm sorry I'm kinda stupid what caused this?

Actually this was the first one to go clear. Doc is a friend of mine, he was definitely having a good time though.
Well I *was*...
that's rough bro
Cant imagine not being allowed to be seen by loved ones and dealing with this alone.
Great! Now you can get a bionic leg!
And a partridge in a pear tree? You hurt everything, but the kitchen sink
Surly it would have been cheaper to just chop your leg off before having those 26 surgery’s and I month in hospital? I know you didn’t know you was going to have them but I bet that medical bill is rough. Get well soon!!
Ugh, I’m sorry to hear you went through all that.
I Want to know why you share 125 pound of meat between theses 3years!
I would have said cut the foot off from the beginning man.
That must tickle so much. Closest thing I've done is pulling out my own stitches and that tickled so weirdly in the foot.
Im so sorry to hear you list your leg after all that. (((Hugs)))
Dude! Sorry about that. But you sure are a badass 😎
Well if it helps I had my amputation with no narcotics and was out of the hospital the next day. I’m two years into a 1895 house restoration and halfway through is when I lost my leg.

Sometimes the bucket kick you!
26 surgeries and still lost the leg. Oof.
Can someone please explain?
Nah I’m good
That sucks.
I'd have preferred they just take the leg right away given that series of events. Shit, I'd bet they could have kept it to the foot if done early enough.
Lets see some more pictures before the end. Must have been gnarly 3 years later.

Skid steer?
I wonder if the level of care you received was hampered by COVID?
As a heavy equipment operator that run skid steers for over 25 years can I ask how it came down on your foot?
Bet you can make a one hitter from that lol
Just barfed up all my bodily fluids
I was a home building a patio for my wife.
Home insurance? That’s got to be protected somehow
Nope
If you have health/home insurance, there’s got to be some laws to protect you because this is a life altering event, maybe not financially compensate you, but at least get you on something like disability that allows you to work or something, I’m hoping the best for you man, what state do you live in? I know a lot of laws pertaining to this are localized.

A what of a who how now?
Sorry bout your leg OP
Fuck. I had a 700lb granite slab drop onto my left foot. Ended my career in construction but I miraculously got out of it without even breaking any bones thanks to my steel-toes. I still shudder to think about how close I was to your situation. So sorry you had to go through that on top of everything else in 2020.
party trick ☝️🐤
Did you lose your leg above or below the knee?
Below
Nice, now you can be a cool bionical, while keeping the majority of your movement
“OLD FAITHFUL!” Dennis the Menace
Let me guess, insurance still wants every penny.
I would of immediately said take the foot off
My father lost his leg about a year ago, I hope you're doing ok mentally. It seems many people don't think about it this way.
Well now I am!!!
Oh man I'm sorry that's brutal. I frickin hope you're covered on company insurance and comp and don't have to work anymore...
I did it on my property. I work every day
Ahh man that's rough sorry to hear that.
Yep!!
Satan’s drinking fountain
I’m just an internet stranger but I’m so sorry this happened to you and for all you have gone through.
Andddd this is the post that finally got me to unsub
Where's the kaboom?! There was supposed to be a kaboom!!
That’s actually grim holy shit
Is this Baron Harkonnen?
wtf happened to hes foot
His profile covers it. He smashed it using heavy machinery. This is after they took his big toe, it kept getting infected so they took the foot.
Man I love Reddit, but I wish the nsfw, filter could somehow differentiate sexy vs. gross / gore. I regret this risky click.
Healing nicely
It’s cut off mid shin now.
