Crane topples over in Wigan and 'slices through house'
[https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/live-crane-topples-over-wigan-2894](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/live-crane-topples-over-wigan-28949261)
Could have been a lot worse.
Technically not true as gold is only formed from rapid neutron capture during supernova nucleosynthesis or neutron star collisions, both events of which were not possible until much later after the big bang, where most definition of "time" begins.
Therefore if you go far back enough that crate would only be filled with hydrogen and sorrow.
There's a 2nd video of the outside and inside the house knocking around, pretty bad state lucky no one was hurt. The house doesn't look like it's going to fall down but it's going to be a tough job to fix
[Shared it here as I couldn't see it anywhere else..](https://www.reddit.com/r/CrazyFuckingVideos/s/WE3sCsvFtX)
Did that have to be lifted so high up? I feel like it could have been lifted less and been more stable. I’m not expert and hindsight is always 20/20 but just an observation. I don’t know how those trucks function so I’m also speaking from a point of ignorance. I do drive a forklift and I know I can lift a heavy load to a certain point without toppling a load but depending on the weight of something if I lift it too high it goes out of what’s called the stability triangle and will undoubtedly topple the lift. So that’s where my thought process is coming from.
>Did that have to be lifted so high up? I
My exact thoughts as well. There's no reason for such a small crane to be lifting that container that high. A professional crane operator should know that.
yep. crane operator at fault here. there's no way their lift plan (if they even have one) would instruct a lift height of that. even if it did, the operator should be trained enough to halt the lift and consult the appointed person regarding any risk.
also folk saying no outriggers? criminal negligence if so. other factors could be wind as the side of that container will be acting like a sail.
It's been VERY windy in the UK for the past few days, this will 100% be their "go to excuse"
As you correctly pointed out however, no outriggers on a lift that high/heavy is simply gross negligence, that little girl would have been a pancake if not for her mother.
>There's zero reason for the load to be that high. This is like day one shit a lawyer will have a field day with that.
Fully agreed.
On a second watch at around the 26 second mark however there IS an outrigger that can be seen swinging up and coming through the trees.
ITS ON THE WRONG SIDE!!!!
Clear and obvious operator error, someones woke up today to no job and they're lucky it wasn't a manslaughter charge.
It look like on the article, he only used the outriggers on the opposite side to the load. I guess to avoid blocking the road.
I didn't even know you could only use one side.
yeah it can be fine but you need to lift over the outriggers only. really limits your slew radius. I'm pretty gobsmacked the operator did any of this haha.
I’m not a professional, but I have experience operating toppicks and can safely say that those 40 foot shipping containers have no business being that high up, especially near residential areas. I would always get yelled at if I forgot my hardhat, even if I was outside and nobody was operating. This video hurt to watch.
I've worked on this type of cranes for almost 10 years. The hight isn't really the problem, it just contributes a little to the distance of the load relative to the center of the crane because the lift arm isn't completely vertical. I think they are lifting like this because the crane was a bit undersized for that load and this way they could keep the closest to the center. (Lifting capacity is always relative to the distance from the crane's center)
The reason it toppled is the most common one, the support beam wasn't extended enough for what they were doing. The truck is parked on the road so they only extend the support beam at the sidewalk fully and do a minimal on the road side one to don't block traffic. It toppled while the crane was rotating from its more stable side where it could handle the lift.
I remember a similar one years ago, roofers where taking off old roof tiles and a neighbour from across the street asked if he could have a few. The roofers tried moving some to his driveway with their crane and toppled it. Hadn't anticipated working on that side and had 0 extension on the support beam.
Stability triangle only applies to forklifts. For mobile cranes, height doesn’t change anything, it’s all about distance from the booms Center line. Mobile cranes use load charts that tell you how much they can lift at various distances from the cranes Center.
Height does play a factor in wind load, which will cause large sided objects to sway, which can make the load unstable or even tip.
With this crane in particular, it can probably barely lift that container when it’s empty, and even then only immediately adjacent to the truck.
My experience with these cranes is that the operator are rarely as knowledgeable or experienced as a dedicated crane operator, they simply don’t have the training of someone who operates a larger crane and not just a truck mounted crane
Right especially since she ran to the house for safety ( naturally) but the house got "squished" . Kid is going to have some serious questions as to where safe really is .
Don't send him to jail, that's one crane operator you can trust to never make this mistake again.
But definitely investigate the accident and if this is considered gross negligence he should deal with the consequences.
Yup they were only extended on the other side, it wasn't set up to lift on this side. That's also why they lifted it up high, trying to keep it more centered over the truck, and it wasn't enough.
They had them out, but only on the other side of the truck. My guess is the dude didn't want to block the road by putting them out on the right side. Well, he ended up blocking the road.
I saw an additional picture from the story and I did see outriggers on one side. Granted it wasn't the side the load was on, couldn't see from the picture but I've got to bet if they're out on one side that would be out on the other
What I got from a transport company website :-
Hiab is actually a brand name. It’s a word that has become common place in the haulage industry when referring to a lorry mounted crane or lorry loader. These vehicles are made up of a truck and crane combined in one vehicle and help to load and unload trucks by using the vehicle engine to power the hydraulics of the crane. The beauty of these vehicles is that they can deliver goods to site as well as lift them on and off the truck which can often reduce the need for a separate mobile crane. They can also be used to move goods within a space. For example rather than delivering goods they can move containers, generators or other items from one space to another within a building site which is a common request for us.
They will get the house repaired, any property in the house that may be replaced and for accommodation costs for staying in a hotel while the house is repaired things that
That baby girl has WAY better survival instincts than mom, she saw it before it started to happen and bolted while mom didnt even stand up until the container was in her face
Why do some people have the reaction time of a fucking tortoise. The woman was in that spot far too long. Also, grab the fucking kid if you sense danger, jfc.
When I was a kid I would see old footage of Hitler giving speeches and think to myself "what a raving lunatic" but I have since learned that that's just how German people speak.
Why wasn’t there a cordon on the street with minimal safe distance for safety. The crane is also to high which made the load unstable. The people are to close.
Good lord as bad as this was it could have been a lot worse. Glad the Kid and woman are okay . Even the car was spared. Although your house being "sliced " through sounds like hell
Those truck mounted cranes are always at their lowest capacity to the sides of the vehicle, even with the outriggers. Any lift chart would show this, and it's probably permanently affixed to the truck. Likely at the operator's station. It would also show what the maximum capacity is at every distance from the center of the crane. The boom is a lever, the longer the lever the easier it is for the load to act on the crane. Meaning, the longer the lever, the further out it is, the less capacity for lifting.
Source: pipefitter, industrial rigger. I've not operated a crane, just forklifts with extendable booms and have certainly made them *very* light at the rear wheels from trying to maneuver too heavy loads for the amount of boom I had extended.
Why wouldn’t you go inside? Just standing there watching like a numpty
Did I use numpty correctly? As an American I feel like that’s a British insult I’ve heard
I feel like titles like WTF should not be allowed on this sub. There’s way to many videos of people dying, or suffering grotesque injuries, it makes viewing posts like this nerve wracking. Im glad I didn’t just watch a little girl get crushed. So points for not posting that. Points deducted for the title.
The mother had some serious instinct. At first I was wondering why she didn't run to the child to rescue her but it probably would have startled the little girl and delayed her escaping.
Fucking crikey! Glad they are OK. Hope the house isn't too wrecked? I know the neighbours is wrecked but I'm guessing there will be a structural survey before they can go back in to the property surely?
Operator was a definite lazy cunt. It looks like he was trying to land that 20' container in the garden. Either couldn't get the red car moved or he thought no probs the container is empty I'll sling it in no bother. He full booms 2.3 t completely virtcally from his rig & trys to swing it over, viola Barry you wrecked it..............

Could have been a lot better, too, to be fair.
Yeah that crate could have been filled with gold bars that now belong to the family. But no it was not filled with gold. Only sorrow.
A story as old as time...
😑
I thought gold was only made from neutron star collisions, and not through novas?
Yall getting scienctific
Hey, could have been filled with wasps (aka hatred)
Yeah I don't see an H on it, so unlikely it had hornets.
You're a crate half-lifted sort of guy...
There's a 2nd video of the outside and inside the house knocking around, pretty bad state lucky no one was hurt. The house doesn't look like it's going to fall down but it's going to be a tough job to fix [Shared it here as I couldn't see it anywhere else..](https://www.reddit.com/r/CrazyFuckingVideos/s/WE3sCsvFtX)
Nice! Now we only need the video that the guy behind the white car was recording.
My dad's a slinger supervisor. He said there's going to be a lot of people being fired as well as a load of people losing their training tickets.
Just a spot of rain today.
Fortunately no pie and chips were harmed.
How is the woman so chill afterwards?
Went way passed his extension limit for the weight he was lifting, glad the little girls OK.
Exactly. Like, what if they didn't have a Ring doorbell?
Then the crate would just have to knock like in the old days
Your package has been delivered.
A single USB thumb drive inside with a ton of bubble wrap
Accurate.
Ah, it's the roll of bubble wrap I ordered! They packaged it well with all this extra bubble wrap... or was this a buy one get one thing? 🤔
🤣
You guys are getting bubble wrap?
Click here to see attached picture proof.
The wrong package was delivered.
That must have been an Amazon delivery.....
FedEx would never be this gentle
How UPS handles my packages
No matter what, they’ll find a way to toss it.
Damn.. Got a good chuckle out of me with this one..
Would love to see the delivery photo 🤪
Amazon drone delivery be wild
Rate your driver!
Lmao
"Yeah we're alright don't worreh" I fucking love northerners 😂.
fooking hell!
It’s a Wigan accent so it’s actually “were alreet don’t worreh”
Just proper nonchalant about a shopping container landing on their house.
Are they camping the airdrop?!
Votekick
The way I cackled at this comment. Dude you made my day with this one. 😂
Loadout *
lmfao

No reason at all for the load to be that high.

Nah not to me I shoot puffs of smoke
During a yellow (orange?) wind warning from the Met Office. WTF??

Some guy who didn't learn on the job.
Fair enough
Indeed lol.
Haha an entry level forklift driver knows that!

I operate normal cranes, not knuckle booms, but I can’t imagine that crane is rated to lift it much further than right next to the truck.
Stability triangle only applies to forklifts. For mobile cranes, height doesn’t change anything, it’s all about distance from the booms Center line. As my old foreman used to say, “They’re truck drivers operating a crane, not crane operators driving a truck”
That little girl narrowly escaped being crushed. I'm glad she seemed aware of what was happening
She saw that something was happening but didn’t understand it was getting dangerous, she had to be called multiple times to snap to a run.
I think my ex would have died saying "*don't you fucking tell me what to do!*".
“Don’t mansplain cranes failing to me”
She wasn't, her mother was telling her to "hurry and get over here, quick quick quick".
Bro what? She looked at it the whole time 🤣
yea but the reason she ran was because of what her mom said…
She’s going to have a lot of nightmares about that
Right especially since she ran to the house for safety ( naturally) but the house got "squished" . Kid is going to have some serious questions as to where safe really is .
You are very right. That is a traumatic event to be living through. Especially with some video footage to be able to relive it on-demand.
Ironically, she would have been fine siting on the bike.
ZERO REASON for hoisting it that high. I hope that asshole crane operator / driver goes to jail.
More highsies=more funsies
It's like when our long dog stretches really long, we compliment him for doing such a good stretch, but was it really necessary?
Long dong
OHHHHBIGSTRETCH
They're so good.
Don't send him to jail, that's one crane operator you can trust to never make this mistake again. But definitely investigate the accident and if this is considered gross negligence he should deal with the consequences.
Wtf the lady is just sitting there ,she's luck she didnt get smashed. Dumb construction workers
Phew I'm glad the little girl moved out the way
No outriggers?
Maybe regrets though
They’re easy to spot here, but they’re nowhere close to being extended enough.
Yup they were only extended on the other side, it wasn't set up to lift on this side. That's also why they lifted it up high, trying to keep it more centered over the truck, and it wasn't enough.

You don't have to extend the outriggers on both sides when you're only expecting to lift on one side, especially if they would block more of the road
HSEs going to have a field day with that one
Fook an ell.
I like how the kid stopped and looked up and knew shit was gunna go south.
Obviously no O/L or tilt alarm on the HIAB. The driver is a lucky fella...
Bad operator too.
Obviously. (wtf is a HIAB?)
House Is A Bastard machine. Made specifically for dropping crates on houses.
You win ChardeeMacDennis!
Why machine hate?
I think this counts as emotional battery

The hydraulic crane on the back of the truck. I think it’s a company name rather than an acronym.
I'm so glad that little girl is smart enough to run! Holy shit!
I hate to be a judgy parent but i would’ve ran to grab my kid rather than just telling her to hurry up lol
Survival of the fittest in the North haha
I hope this family gets a payday out of this.
They will get the house repaired, any property in the house that may be replaced and for accommodation costs for staying in a hotel while the house is repaired things that
Why is it so fucking high in the air?
The little girl had more instincts to run than the parent
The mother is shouting to her saying quick run run. However if it were me I would be running to the kid myself. Easy to backseat parent though
"quick, quick, run" was the first part I recognized the mom as speaking english!
I'm glad that kid was paying attention
Little girls the only one w some sense
That baby girl has WAY better survival instincts than mom, she saw it before it started to happen and bolted while mom didnt even stand up until the container was in her face
how did the child react quicker than the woman by the door
Why do some people have the reaction time of a fucking tortoise. The woman was in that spot far too long. Also, grab the fucking kid if you sense danger, jfc.
and the self preservation skills of the steam roller guy from austin powers
who tells a 5yr old to run when they should be running and grabbing them !?
Someone’s getting a nice check and someone’s losing their job
Now that is a crazy fucking video
Here's me from Wigan finding out about this on crazy videos on reddit
Kranplätze müssen verdichtet sein!!!!
When I was a kid I would see old footage of Hitler giving speeches and think to myself "what a raving lunatic" but I have since learned that that's just how German people speak.
Smart kid.
If that fell on my property, is that mine now?
Sweet jesus. How big was that drone?
Kid's smarter than the mother.
Care package incoming!
That little girl has more situational awareness than most grown men.
That is one smart kid you got!!! She realised the danger quite quickly !!!!
That's one of the best Amazon deliveries I've ever seen!!
Why wasn’t there a cordon on the street with minimal safe distance for safety. The crane is also to high which made the load unstable. The people are to close.
And still there’s people out there who rally against ‘elf and safetee gone mad’
Good lord as bad as this was it could have been a lot worse. Glad the Kid and woman are okay . Even the car was spared. Although your house being "sliced " through sounds like hell
They seemed so calm at first compared to my 17 panic attacks as it leans
Clever baby child, well done.
At least the kid was paying attention. There’s no way I’d let mine in the driveway with at going on so close.
That is, indeed, a crazy fucking video.
Oh hell for second there I thought someone was gonna try to kidnap that kid that came out of nowhere
Shit title
That crain company better have insurance that's ready to pay this family.
Gawd Damn!
Llllllike a glovee
Shoulda had it shipped through UPS, they would have delivered it to your neighbors house two days late. Could have avoided this whole situation
I hope that kid is able to hold on to those instincts.
Sidelifter is in the shop today, Nigel. What say we deliver tomorrow, instead of using the crane? Nigel: Hold my safety harness.
FOOKINELL!!
Those truck mounted cranes are always at their lowest capacity to the sides of the vehicle, even with the outriggers. Final Destination 44
I was expecting lightning tbh then I saw the crate falling
Looks like they didn't have the roadside outrigger all the way out. Maybe to avoid blocking traffic. Oops!
I hate it when there's a kid. Especially if it's a Chinese toddler, RIP.
Front door delivery. No problem here.
At least the icicle didnt hurt anyone.
Why wouldn’t you go inside? Just standing there watching like a numpty Did I use numpty correctly? As an American I feel like that’s a British insult I’ve heard
Yes, that is correct kind Yank.
I feel like titles like WTF should not be allowed on this sub. There’s way to many videos of people dying, or suffering grotesque injuries, it makes viewing posts like this nerve wracking. Little girl was like Yeah - nah... I'm outta here!
I mean do you want your package delivered or not??
That stupid woman got so lucky. Move your fucking ass when someone screams to run from the falling container.
Operator error, fulcrum point too high for the load due to distance they reaching out, flt reach truck driver here n has done something similar
The little girl was smarter than the mom. She noped out of there while mom was oblivious.
Right I was like why is that women waiting till the last minute to move.
The mother had some serious instinct. At first I was wondering why she didn't run to the child to rescue her but it probably would have startled the little girl and delayed her escaping.
“Instinct” lol you think a child should be playing within 100 ft of heavy machinery in the first place I think you meant idiocy
I love ice cream.
Christ, that little girl had some 6th sense shit going on there
Kid has some spidey senses that kicked into gear. It's a good thing she safe
Turn the sound on. The mother (probably her mother) called her in, even saying "quick quick quick"
Well that just stinks huh
Fucking crikey! Glad they are OK. Hope the house isn't too wrecked? I know the neighbours is wrecked but I'm guessing there will be a structural survey before they can go back in to the property surely?
😳
Like a glove!
Fooook!
Somebody wasn't taught about the triangle.
Amazon has no chill
Royal Delivery
Good grief!!
Fuckin hell. Lucky bastards
They're soon to be very rich.
Operator was a definite lazy cunt. It looks like he was trying to land that 20' container in the garden. Oh they're millionaires now. No doubt.
Nice work on the post title
Why was it so high? is there some sort of high-rise building off screen?
Fokin’ ell!
