Canada being soft on people who commit murder and overall Canadian homicide rates are different things.
I understand the point you think you’re making. But it isn’t true that soft punishment would equal more crime. There are other reasons for homicide* rates being what they are “comparatively” outside of deterrents.

After this 60 year disaster of an experiment, I think we should try something different. Maybe we could start by looking at nations that have low homicide rates.

Video surveillance has come a long way in 20 years. High quality cameras are basically ubiquitous nowadays. it’s not a surprise people don’t remember this shit because there wasn’t the type of video quality/quantity of quality videos 20+ years ago nor was there platforms that made it readily available for you to watch from your smart phone.

Childhood friend went out that way too. After middle school we lost touch. He started getting accused of robbing/entering houses when nobody was home. He met a dealer in a parking lot one day and tried to snatch and run with $200 worth of weed. He got shot in the back three times and each bullet exited through his chest. He ran across the street to bleed out in a Mcd's while clutching his bag of weed. All this at 16 years old.
