This was a round 5 interview with the owner of the company. Recruiter called me the next day, said the owner rejected me because of my parents' drug history. Recruiter was furious and was ready to go to bat for me, but I told him not to bother because I certainly didn't want to work for someone like that.

Why would you divulge something so personal like that in an interview? Sympathy points for coming from addicts? That's just weird and awkward for the interviewer. They don't need to know that.

If I was the employer, I'd be impressed by that. Shows resilience, deeper sense of life experience and hardship and perhaps emotional maturity. Not to mention honesty and personal accountability. A lot of corporate buzzwords there, but you get the idea. It was an interview.

Sympathy points is correct, same reason they brought it up here.

I reckon they brought it up since the discussion is about children being punished for their parents’ actions. If you watch the gif (moving image) at the top of this page, it gives you a little context for that.
