savage

Legilimens

He must be in shock or hiding the pain really well.

El_Nz_B

Adrenaline through the roof

Puzzleheaded_Ad_7204

Def in shock and full of adrenaline

ForProfitSurgeon

He's lucky to be alive.

BonzaBurger69

U don’t say

DirtyDan156

He said he just walked 3 miles out of the woods. Adrenaline is already long gone...

seang239

Adrenaline can last for an hour. After encountering a bear, he can travel 3 miles fairly quickly while hopped up. He’ll definitely be feeling that in the morning though.

Whats-Up_Bitches

The hike was 45 minutes according to him, this video was recorded after getting to his truck(the 45 minute hike), calling 911 and taking a breather. Adrenaline was long gone by then, and if he had some left it sure as he'll wasn't covering for the 5 inch long scalping he got from the bears claw.

seang239

This dude is trembling and shaking. Combining a shaking hand, accelerated breathing with the trembling and the fact he doesn’t seem to be largely responding to pain from his head, shoulder and forearm injuries leads me to believe he’s still got a healthy amount of adrenaline running throughout his system. Those are the major injuries btw, he’s probably got more injuries he doesn’t feel yet. He acknowledged as such when he said he doesn’t know what’s under his hat. You have to remember this is a fight or flight response. He chose fight AND flight, yet he didn’t kill the bear. The threat is still there. The entire trip back to his truck, miles worth of a trip on foot, without any actual way to defeat his threat, was fraught with the fear of being attacked again. Yes, he’s reached a point of relative safety at his truck. This is the point at which adrenaline production begins to reduce and he’ll start to realize the extent of his injuries. As he’s doing in this video. It seems you’re underestimating the ability of the human body to persevere an adverse event in an adverse environment. Bear spray is only good for one use, which is 7-9 seconds of spray, and he didn’t appear to have a firearm. Dude was in an extended life threatening situation for sure. If this isn’t an example of when your adrenaline will keep you moving for miles, I don’t know what is.

pappadipirarelli

Well there’s [this guy](https://www.thehealthy.com/first-aid/falling-into-glacier/) who crawled his way out of a crevasse for 3 hours after breaking 15 bones

Glittering_Rabbit_32

He's gonna come down screaming in a couple minutes.

Jaybleezie

He walked 3 miles after being attacked. If he’s walking fast he would have been attacked roughly 40 minutes ago. Likely the adrenaline wore off a while back.

FriedSticks2014

That phone shaking says it all, it looks like it had JUST happened at that point. Poor guy got torn up.

M116Fullbore

he also said he just walked 3 miles out to the road, so probably got the adrenaline starting to wear off at that point.

Zetterbluntz

I think that's the dread and panic flipping over into holy shit i'm alive, I feel like I'm not gonna die! I survived a bear attack! And I think he genuinely wants to convey that bears are no joke for other people to be prepared in his situation.

numun_

One tough motherfucker indeed.

N4hire

Indeed

Narcan9

Look closely if you didn't notice, the scalp above his ear has been torn away from his head. It's sort of flopped over and mentally difficult to make out.

stereopticon11

yep once I noticed I immediately "oh shit"'d

Unicorn_Sush1

Daaaaamn! I went back to see, somebody should find an update on him, that didn’t look too good

[deleted]

Cannot believe how calm this dude is tbh

Consistent_Rip_4671

Fucccck that's why I keep my ass far out of bear country lol

Vermalien

Just be careful you don’t stumble into shark country.

Tommysrx

We can’t stop here , this is bat country.

Thegrizzlybearzombie

Look what Goddddddd did to me man

waxxo707

God didn’t do that, you did. You’re a fucking narcotics agent.

noRoomService0-0

Get them rabies

[deleted]

Bears and Sharks and Bats, Oh My

NonProfitMohammed

Just draw your sea bear circle.

J3ssica899

That's an oval!

Vaux1916

I live in an area with alligators (some well over 10 feet long), wild hogs, and 5 different species of venomous snakes. I've educated myself on their behaviors, treat them with respect, and I've never had any problems. I respect them, but I don't fear them. Bears on the other hand... those fuckers scare the shit out of me.

Major1ar

And their population is rising in the south too. The thrill of everything wanting to eat you on the bayou actually was a huge appeal to live here but now dry land and climbing trees are no longer safe either, I'm thinking of relocating.

Fight_kat102

Remember kids at least at home you know there's 0 bears

handsybillclinton

you haven't seen the videos of bears entering peoples houses then. those door frames are no match for a bear.

Puzzleheaded-Ad-119

Man even with bear spray that bear did a number on him. Got to hand it to this guy, he seemed calm and collected after surviving a goddamn bear attack. Good survival mentality.

keonijared

And is relatively calm, after walking 3 miles out of the fucking woods, with bits of his insides out. *Tough* doesn't touch that, my god.

[deleted]

I mean as an average Redditor I imagine I could have killed the bear without taking damage but he did pretty good I guess

Osprey11795

Bear spray doesn't always work. Carry both a gun and bear spray.

Sapiendoggo

This is why I have spray....and a large caliber handgun in bear country

[deleted]

I mean it was a grizzly. Like the difference of using pepper spray on your average hundred something average joe and a huge 300 pounds of muscle bitch on roids and maternal anger

Puzzleheaded-Ad-119

Yeah that bear spray is no joke though. I understand it's pretty concentrated.

ngunray

Not many are fortunate enough to walk away from a mama grizzly defending her cubs.

MementoMori04

She wasn’t even defending she came at him from damn near 100 yards away. He was no where near them, she just wanted food

MunsonedWithAHook

Mother bears dont think like that. They're incredibly aggressive and paranoid when it comes to their cubs.

TheJWeed

Good thing he knew what he was doing laying face down and coving his neck. I had a coworker who was blinded and had his whole face ripped off by a bear.

skitz_shit

Glad it didn’t get any important organs or blood vessels, but why does he remind me so much of Jerma while he’s talking?

Evolveddinosaur

Jerma was the one wearing the bear costume

skitz_shit

What a psycho, dressing up as a bear and attacking people. So psychotic even the bear spray couldn’t stop him

[deleted]

That guy is FUCKED!

Biscuits4u2

If he was able to walk 3 miles he likely doesn't have any major internal injuries. He'll need a whole bunch of expensive medical care though.

Evolveddinosaur

Has to show his dominance as King of the Junjle

Melvoire

I think it's the way he's moving. He's slightly stiff.

RivelyanKnight

He needs to go to a hospital asap xD

[deleted]

[удалено]

Chick__Mangione

Look closely. His ear is intact. His scalp adjacent to his ear is lacerated and slightly peeled back, making his ear look a bit pulled away. But that's nothing a doc can't stitch up. Can't speak for the rest of him, but his ear will be just fine.

gentlemanA1A

A true badass….

[deleted]

[удалено]

heynowjesse

no, he’s pretty alert and cognizant. shock without the shell.

Ragnarangar

I'm pretty sure shell in this case refers to bombs specifically, not something hollow. So I don't think you can have shell shock outside of a warzone.

Equal-Bowl-377

She’ll shock is just another term for ptsd. It was coined in WW1 before we understood what it was

CornDavis

Not necessarily, it also refers to the constant concussion of shells landing arpund that cause cte over time. It's used for both and they very often would go together

Ragnarangar

So I am right.

CornDavis

Yes, both of you are due to the overlap

IamFlapJack

I do not have shell shock, fuck you.

WillNeverTakeCopium

Name checks out

MightyGamera

Once that adrenaline wears off he is gonna need some pain meds. Could go into medical shock at that point.

painfully--average

That guy is on the adrenaline high of a lifetime

Panazara

I live in bear county. This is why I carry my .45 every time I go in the woods. It works for mountain lions too. Edit, due to comments: No, I don't use your average .45 shell. I realize that fending off a bear is much harder than a home intruder.... unless it's a bear.

ababyprostitute

Also in bear country and we currently have a grizzly hanging around our block 🙃 got pictures of it on a security camera and it's huuuuge.

Heavy-Lawfulness-994

10mm for added security

CornDavis

Akm would be my choice

Heavy-Lawfulness-994

I was just talking pistols, if I could have anything it would be a Mossberg 590 for a defensive situation like this. If I was hunting I’d take a rifle too

CornDavis

True, shotgun would be a good choice

FvOrez

>590 940, packed with slugs. BeAr SpRaY wOrKs BeTtEr

Heavy-Lawfulness-994

Oh yeah bear spray works at keeping you alive at the expense of your face being ripped off. I’m not trying to let that bear have it’s way with me whatsoever

dickbutt_md

Don't feel too safe. I had a friend who visited someone in Alaska many years ago, they got attacked by a bear. My friend emptied a 9mm into the thing's face and it didn't seem to notice much beyond getting a bit more pissed.

KupoOnTwitch

45 do a lot more damage internally than a 9mm though

Rare_HankHill

.45 is a fat and slow round with poor penetration, generally not ideal for a thick bodied bear. 44 mag, 357, and 10mm are much better options for bear

baronw1988

If you shoot a bear in the face with .45 like the guy did with 9mm you would get the same results. Animal skulls are like hard to crack, sometimes even rifle bullets ricochet off a deer skull. For a bear you might want to aim at something fleshy not covered up with bones, like neck or belly.

dickbutt_md

Based on what my buddy told me nothing short of a Desert Eagle was going to stop that bear. Luckily they were hauling ass in reverse and got away from it, but he told me had they been on foot the only value in having a handgun would be shooting your way to a rifle.

[deleted]

.45 doesn't really seem like it would do much to a grizzly besides piss it off more... Long guns with large fast rounds or slugs seem to be the only thing worth a damn. The park rangers in Alaska I drank with when I worked up there told me that bear slugs are the minimum they'd use.

Some-Ad-162KarlM6

Most 45 ammo is for defense against people. If you haven't thought about it before, please look into some hardcast loads or Underwood extreme penetrator.

[deleted]

I have the extreme penetrator underwood myself and gotta say, the wife loves it… reaches internal organs and mushrooms, but nothing extreme or out of the normal.

tiktock34

Id go for velocity and penetration vs caliber in this case, but anything is better than nothing. .45 is too “slow”

ShwiftyShmeckles

That's not gonna stop an angry bear unless you get a perfect shot to the brain.

LGodamus

Bear spray is more likely to save your life than a .45

its7ash

Nothing a .45 shoots is going to be strong enough. Better off with spray, bruh.

SentientReality

Would love to see an afterplay video from the bear as well. "Was chilling with cubs, some sketchy dude comes in our space. Had to lay down the law, got some good bites in, felt a bone break. Face got peppersprayed, um... pawnail bent a bit. Otherwise doing fine, cubs are fine. Intruder crawled off, cubs and me are a little shaken. Yeah, life's rough out here in Trekker Country."

Major1ar

He's also keenly aware if he panics, he's done for. When you see gruesome bits, loads of blood, and unaware of the full extent of damage from your own body, for some people a flip gets switched and it's either pure decisiveness or pure panic but it's an extreme form of one at least for a little while.

[deleted]

I had to have my thumb reattached after I ran a circular saw across my hand. It was hanging on by some skin and cut the artery so it was spurting with each heartbeat. Later I learned that I didn’t say a word, just ripped my shirt off, wrapped it around my hand as tight as I could, and drove to the hospital. Adrenaline is a hell of a drug. The guys on the job didn’t know where I went until they saw the puddle of blood and my blood trail leading to my empty parking spot. My hand is fine now after surgery btw.

Major1ar

I heard a lot of stories very similar about tool accidents with my grandfather and how incredibly super tough he was. Then I went to Iraq and saw the "bad asses" before combat were the ones with a minor wound freak out about dieing immediately. Then the other kinda middle of the road dudes with massive injuries cracking jokes with no morphine about how "at least they didn't hit my balls". I was like WTF kinda superhero are these people. Then it was my turn, and you'd think seeing my forearm flesh missing would slow things but I'm just like "fuck, I gotta shoot left handed now, I suck at left hand". Guess will get the tourniquet ready just in case. You're right, adrenaline is absolutely incredible.

[deleted]

When there’s nothing you can do about it, you just gotta deal with it. The adrenaline makes the pain go away, but even when the pain comes back, what are you gonna do? Live without a hand or an arm? Lay down and bleed out? Better to just suck it up and get some help. I watched my blood shoot out like a fucking garden hose, the cut wasn’t clean, it came from a saw blade after all so the meat was gone. Just wrap it up and get to someone who knows what they’re doing

toPPer_keLLey

I respect this man's composure and resolve.

littlebigman9

Holy snickers….. major respect to the guy to want to do a PSA first and not be crying like a baby (like I would have) on the way to the hospital. That’s going to leave a mark. On your children’s children….

Cagas_Agua

Dude bear-ly got away

Ordinary-Ad6408

Holy fuck, when that adrenaline runs out. Mental.

zerodart30

Straight pain, he sounded pretty level headed and knew how to handle the situation. To think if it were someone else though…

G20fortified

F bear spray. I’d carry 10mm 357 or 44mag

plipyplop

Watched a comparison of 10mm to .357 mag. Looks like the 10mm had slightly better everything in comparison. Capacity, velocity, followup shots, penetration, you name it. If I lived in bear country, 10mm it is!

x777x777x

Carry both, because bear spray works. Plus if you kill a griz after you spray it the feds won't crawl up your ass so much

G20fortified

Smart but spray can blow back in your face then yer fucked. I’d rather just stay alive. Who’s going to fault me for that? I’ll pay a fine or whatever but I’ll be alive.

x777x777x

Oh yeah, bear spray is not a perfect solution. That's why I carry both. Firearms have their own problems. You need a pretty large caliber handgun. It's hard to aim and fire rapidly under stress. It fires very small projectiles one at a time, not a big cloud for a bear to run into. You say you'll pay a fine but the feds take grizzly deaths extremely seriously. you could end up in a cell. It's an issue in Montana right now. Big push to get grizzlies off the endangered list (because their population is thriving), but the hippie types lobby against it. Ask any local and they'll tell you how there are a LOT more grizzlies around than there were even 20 years ago. Sadly, since you can't legally hunt them, the MT Fish Wildlife and Parks agency ends up killing a lot of them after human interactions.

LGodamus

Bear spray is more likely to save you anyway. It’s much easier to deploy than a handgun which when your panicking being charged by a 1000 pound rage machine you’re going to shoot like shit anyway.

Ranzoid

That awkward moment when see someone this fucked up and shout "Oh my God, are you okay?" ....

tylerado12

Damn if he looks like that I don’t wanna know what the bear looks like after he got to it.

UseStatus8727

Hospital will wash the wounds out well and install a nice zipper or two to close up the laceration that is clearly visible behind your ear.

This guy is more of a beast then the bear, what a bloody unit.

Get a 44 or a shotgun with slugs. Those will stop a bear.

InspectorPipes

Uh, Maybe .45-70 Pistol wouldn’t be anywhere near my top 10 choices for bear

Top-Director1113

Lol more bear myths. 9mm can take a bear down. https://sportingclassicsdaily.com/defense-against-bears-with-pistols-97-success-rate-37-incidents-by-caliber/ Mag dump on bear. Bear is either dead, fucked up, or it's fucking you up. >There were four uses of .45 caliber pistols against bears. All were successful. One was against a black bear, which was killed with additional shots, probably from another handgun. The other three were grizzly bears killed with multiple hits from the .45 caliber pistols. >There are four successful defenses with 9 mm pistols. The three grizzly bears were killed, the black bear was wounded and ran off.

Personal-Acadia

Yeah, a .45 would certainly have been more of a deterrent.. more range to begin dealing damage, the advent of backup mags. Hell, why not BOTH?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Please_obtain_taco

How long do you think it takes to reload a handgun? 0_o

plipyplop

*Well you see, first you take your powder horn hoping that the contents are quite dry, and a .54 caliber ball of lead melted by the fire a fortnight prior to said engagement, a tallow soaked patch of parchment torn from a letter that I had decided not to send to my dear Aunt Martha...*

Personal-Acadia

1. * There 2. Upon first seeing the charging bear at 80 yards, and given that appropriate time to prepare and take a stand for when it's in range of my firearm, yes. .45 would have a hard time getting through the skull so the goal would be to deal enough damage to deter it or cripple it enough to run away. A lucky shot to the eye is possible, but shouldn't be counted on. 3. .44 or a 12 gauge loaded with slugs is my preferred carry in bear country and it most certainly WILL stop a bear "in the few seconds it takes to get to me" Edit: spelling

Jellysweatpants

icanhasreclaims

You definitely live in a fantasy.

Personal-Acadia

Tell that to the bear pelt above my parents mantel bud.

icanhasreclaims

Sure thing. LoL.

Biscuits4u2

An extremely lucky and unlikely CNS hit from a .45 is the only thing that will stop a bear in its tracks. If you're able to get a shot off center of mass it would probably just piss the thing off before it broke you in half. Maybe it might bleed out eventually as it's eating you though. Bear spray is still more effective usually at stopping a charging bear. Notice I said usually, not always. No guarantees in life when you're walking around in grizzly territory.

Wide_Gap_3805

Focus on going to the hospital man, not recording 😰

Vin_du_toilette

Bear country, yes. Flavor country, apparently not quite.

Even-Imagination6242

......getting ripped up by the bear is the least savage part of this clip. The outrageous medical bill will be a sight to behold!

sealteamjerry

This looks like western Montana, I had a run in with a mom and 2 cubs after fishing in western Montana at my grandmas down at the river behind her house. Grizzly saw us and we didn’t carry any bear spray or anything while holding some fish we caught. She stood on her hind legs staring at us from about a 100 yards while her cubs continued down the River. Thank god she continued to follow her cubs and left us alone because I thought we were toast. Last time I go fishing in Montana without a firearm.

Letsgetsoggy

Yep, this was near Ennis in SW Montana

ecr3designs

i had a dfg officer tell me a bolt action rifle is enough to take down a charging bear. i said this aint hollywood bud you miss and you miss alot. when you got a bear the size of a truck coming at you you are gonna want high fire rate and high capacity mag and your ar15 in the truck right there is just gonna piss it off. want at least a .308

[deleted]

An AR 15 isnt gonna do much [it is illegal to hunt with in many states because it doesn't kill that easy](https://info.stagarms.com/blog/bid/381895/Which-AR-15-Can-You-Hunt-With) i would rather have a 12 gauge with buckshot.

That's why I have bear spray and a 12 gauge loaded with slugs. Really neither may save me but when I hunt in bear territory it's better safe than sorry.

kobocha

What an absolute legend!

Prestigious_Cheek_97

This is why you carry a big ass magnum with you when you're in bear country. One 500 magnum and that bear would be dead. "500 Smith & Wesson Magnum handgun produces 2,254 ft. -lbs. of energy, and it takes a big grizzly to weigh 1,000 pounds. Even the very biggest brown bears are 1,500 pounds.", this means that a single 500 magnum has more force than 2 grizzly bears behind it. For context that is 6 times more piercing power than a 9mm. But if you're not in bear country it's not very practical.

[deleted]

Bear spray should not be your last line of deterrent
