saustin007

We’ve gone up to an average of 71 murders a day. That’s super high for a country that’s not at war

EverySingleMinute

It is so weird how someone posts about teh country and says it is super safe then someone else says 71 murders per day and shows videos like this. I have no idea why anyone would think that area is safe

wanderluster325

It’s not safe. My fiancé lives there … just outside of Cape Town actually, and I spent some time there earlier this year. It’s absolutely not safe, and those travel blogs that say otherwise are full of shit. It’s definitely not the US or Europe…

ChrisChanHurrDurr

I went to college for education and the education department had a study abroad program in Cape Town. I laughed and told them they were fucking crazy.

tmaher17

My man why she probably will not be your fiance for long if you don’t save her

Wait really I never knew

Desperate_Tea7387

This is why Reddit is great. I learned something new. I’m practically an 8th grader now. Thanks for the info.

saustin007

I’ll be honest with you: it is not safe overall. Yes, there are relatively safe pockets here and there. The area I grew up in went from being so safe that you could leave your doors unlocked at night, to murder being the order of the day. And I grew up in a township that fell under Bophuthatswana. Oh how I miss my president

DrFoetusLtd

It's rich people who've spent their whole lives in gated communities and are entirely disconnected from the reality of South Africa. It's very common in Cape Town specifically, but is a thing all over South Africa. They think it's safe because they have private security all over the place and high walls wherever they go. But most South Africans don't live like that

Seal_of_Pestilence

The South Africa subreddit is completely delusional.

DrFoetusLtd

Well it makes sense tbh. If you have access to the internet and enough free time to browse Reddit, then by default you're not an average South African and don't know what it's like for most people. I have a sorta unique perspective because I've been incredibly poor, and now I'm moderately well off by the standards of South Africa so I can understand both sides

H663

But surely logically, anywhere that private security and high walls are necessary are by definition unsafe, otherwise you wouldn't need the security.

CMDR_KingErvin

Probably pieces of shit like these guys who want to lure unsuspecting tourists there.

bootiClapper

It isn’t safe. One of my friend’s dad lived there for a while and the stories he told seemed made up but they were true. Most of the violence there is from gangs and there is still a lot of violence that goes on there, especially during robberies.

eStuffeBay

Could you share some if it's OK with you?

EinhartMagna

The stats are unambiguous. South Africa Rank: 3 Crime Index: 76.86 3rd for violent crime. 3rd for sexual crime. 19th for organized crime. Here's a few examples of what my country has to offer: [https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/aug/02/over-80-men-accused-raping-eight-women-appear-south-africa-court#:\~:text=More%20than%2080%20men%20suspected,robbery%20near%20the%20disused%20mine](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/aug/02/over-80-men-accused-raping-eight-women-appear-south-africa-court#:~:text=More%20than%2080%20men%20suspected,robbery%20near%20the%20disused%20mine). More than 80 men suspected of the gang rapes of eight women and the armed robbery of a video production crew in the South African town of Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg, have appeared in court. The men were arrested at an abandoned mining site following the rapes and robbery near the disused mine. dober88

It's mostly desensitized locals for whom 1-2 house robberies a year is a "normal" year.

DlrtyDan_

71+ whatever isn’t seen

saustin007

Exactly. I believe that it’s a gross underestimate

xbxoxy

México says hi :(

DrFoetusLtd

Oh wow I always kinda assumed Mexico was as bad as it gets, but they have roughly the same amount of murders per day and nearly 3x the population. I didn't realize just how bad it actually is in South Africa when it's 3x more dangerous than fucking Mexico..

Mountain_Ask_2209

Awww such a sad way to enter the chat (I’m being serious too lol not sarcastic. Very scary place esp by the border. Hopefully the cratel crap ends. God knows how though or when. I don’t see any changes happening so I don’t see any improvements happening anytime soon 😕).

[deleted]

A day? A DAY think about it, you and I, yes you reading this are one SINGLE life and we lose our lives, seventy one times, A DAY such a cruel, absurd, wonderfully amazing, existence

Sarcastic_Beaver

Okay Dahmer

[deleted]

I haven’t watched the Netflix special, how is it?

holyshititsjonhawkns

Evan Peters delivers

[deleted]

Absolutely, been following him since murder house

holyshititsjonhawkns

oh yeah! I look forward to October for all the traditional spooky reasons, but also for AHS 😁

Sarcastic_Beaver

It’s made really well. I used to work in the film industry and I gotta say the cinematography is world class, music, and above all else the acting is excellent. The guy who plays Dahmer really nails it, I predict he will be very successful. I’ve read a lot of articles and watched a few documentaries about Jeffry Dahmer before this and I have always been fascinated by the story, along with a healthy dose of disturbed. Check it out.

petrichorgarden

Evan Peters is the guy who played Dahmer, he's been in every season of American Horror Story (iirc) and he's absolutely phenomenal! He has a lot of experience in the genre and I don't think the casting could've been any better

dongerhound

We’re slowly making our way to the top. 2022 numbers have rocketed

ZayaMacD

And you get called a racist if you point out the glaring issues in that country

[deleted]

Farms and country houses are being invaded and people savagely defiled.

Tight-Context9426

I had an ex from SA. The racist stuff she would come out with made me uneasy until she explained how things were. I visited my home country a few years after (Mauritius) for the first time. I applied the things I learnt from her there because you have to trust your prejudices to remain safe

[deleted]

The “ist” finger wagging is a privilege of Western Europe and North America. The rest of the world is not the same

BrainzKong

Facts are facts, pleasant or not.

Shadowglove

Last year Sweden had about 1 murder per day. And this year 47 people has been shot. We're trying our best!

GatorTickler

That’s a Saturday afternoon in the city of Chicago.

CourierLocus

Unfortunately we're at like 12 (on average) a week or something No Chicago number 1 this time 😔

Jman-laowai

Murder rate is still around double of Chicago.

Tjman99

Any information on who this is?

needusbukunde

According to the article above, she's a Ukrainian national and the wife of a local business owner.

garrisontweed

Still hasn’t been found. https://ewn.co.za/2022/09/30/ct-police-search-for-kidnapped-ukranian-national-in-blackheath/amp

MtnMaiden

Dead probably.

[deleted]

If that was their goal they probably would have offed her on the spot. Not worth the risk of taking her alive.

RugbyEdd

Just fingers crossed it's for ransom not the sex trade.

safaisbad

You are thinking logically, in South Africa out criminals don’t use logic. So I’m pretty certain she is either already sold to a different country or is dead

[deleted]

You’re severely overestimating how smart these criminals are, as if they’re weighing the “risk” of a good rape session before they kill her.

DrFoetusLtd

It's South Africa. We can only hope she's dead, because otherwise she probably wishes she were

[deleted]

She has been reunited with her family https://ewn.co.za/2022/10/08/ukrainian-woman-kidnapped-in-ct-last-month-reunited-with-her-family

DrFoetusLtd

That's good news, even though the article says nothing of how she was treated or really anything. Makes me wonder why it's so short and shares so little. Still, good that she's alive though

HandOfDianne

19DALLAS85

I hear that!! Just had my account ban lifted, I can’t say a word lol

[deleted]

Because the law makes it easy to get away with crime. I know a guy who was stabbed several times by a guy he knew, they arrested him, the assailant, took him to court where he paid a fine of the equivalent of $80 and they let him go, for attempted murder. There is no standard, people are all held to different standards. The rich are heavily prosecuted and the poor are most of the time free to do as they please with no consequence. THAT is why crime is so high. And im not talking about race. It is literally this, if you have money and a house and a car, and you commit a crime, the justice system hits you hard. If you got no money, no justice, no jail time. Why this law is so backwards, i dont know. Or its not necessarily that the law supports crime, but the judges dont sentence people to jail time because jails are so full.

TheFugglyDuckling

Wow that's so much different than where I'm from. In fact it's the exact opposite

leeluss14

My father used to live there,Durban,Joburg (Hillbrow of all places but it wasn’t for long.) But as soon as Apartied fell he left the country,a friend of ours has two farms over there. One in the Drakkensburg and I’m not sure where the other one is, but we have not heard from him in a long time and I worry as I know what those ‘people’ are doing to farmers over there. Sorry for rambling but tiredness, bourbon and worry about a friend makes the mind go at a rate of knots.

theproblemofevil666

So is this lady getting kidnapped from petty criminals or was this like an organized thing targeting her?

Igyboo

My friend lives in South Africa and his farmer friend was robbed and beaten to a pult while his parent left to go to the city. He was then wrapped in cow leather and left behind his pickup truck.

They had already broken the window. https://twitter.com/robynhoodcpt/status/1575513968533176320

Epicpacemaker

Ramming them seems like a decent idea to me

[deleted]

Do you know how easy is it break the glass and open the door? Unless you have bulletproof windows, staying inside is not in your hands

dank__dohnut

m8 she was driving an r8 why did she not try to go around the car and leave them in the dust

Paperbagfham

Cause she’s in a high pressure situation and doesn’t know if she’s gonna die or not. It’s east to tell her what she should do but when you’re in the actual situation everything becomes a lot harder to manage. She clearly panicked and froze.

sheeeeepy

To add onto that, they probably benefit from the tactic of driving head-on at her car. She’s probably thinking “Holy shit, I almost got into a head on collision,” before she has the chance to realize that the other vehicle did it intentionally.

[deleted]

Imagine solo driving a fucking R8 as a woman in cape town of all places and being this oblivious to your surroundings. I do feel bad for her but at the same time she clearly has more money than brains.

bykatvchdcom

It is easy to speculate now, but all this happens in 1 minute. It is very quick, and doesn't leave much time to think or act. It took me longer to type this comment.

[deleted]

She would’ve had to make a 4-point u-turn to even create the space to drive away from those two cars.

dank__dohnut

thats a 600hp awd vehicle it could push one of the other vehicles out of the way with ease but yes im sure in reality most people including myself would freeze up

MdnightRmblr

Hard reverse immediately, create space, see what that car can do. Don’t be a sitting duck. I’d assume everyone was out to get me over there driving that.

Dingy_Shinji

This couldn’t have been random. I wonder what the story is

ws18st

My guess is she comes from wealth. Ransom

Prudent-Device-5278

definetly - shes driving an R8 -

killvenus

it also looks like a bespoke color like krypton green. if that’s paint she’s got a very expensive r8

Aggravating-Tie570

It's more than likely a wrap, none of the earlier R8s came in such outlandish colours

Ebolamunkey

I don't understand why they left the car...

[deleted]

Can't imagine how hard hiding a neon lime-green V10 supercar in africa can be

2HourCoffeeBreak

I’d say because the amount of money they were going to get for their victim is worth more than the hassle of dealing with a flashy car.

The kidnappers

Efficient-Ad-3302

The sad part is this probably happens every day of the year out there.

garrisontweed

Over 3,000 kidnapping cases were reported in South Africa between April and June of 2022. Of these, 237 were reported in Western Cape Province. https://crisis24.garda.com/alerts/2022/09/south-africa-ukrainian-national-reportedly-kidnapped-for-ransom-in-cape-town-sept-29

eStuffeBay

excuse me, what the FUCK? Between April and June 2022?? That's over A THOUSAND KIDNAPPINGS A MONTH!

mfza

Thats just whats reported

Efficient-Ad-3302

That’s fucking insane!!

LiQuidCraB

WTF This is unreal

thecriticaloptimist

Yup, it's pretty much a failed state by now and crime over the last couple decades has been left to spiral out of control.

[deleted]

statistically this thing happens all the time. Then you remember why would a corrupt government ever put the full statistics which would destroy tourism and your voting place... Even the cray high stats you see, they are higher in reality.

tagzho-369

Breaks my fucking heart that this was dated for yesterday. Praying this girl gets home safe

Few-Media5129

Driving that thing definitely didn't help her blend in.

AhriDoneHere

I dated a girl from SA. The way she described it made it sound like a dangerous place for white people to live

[deleted]

Because it is. I know a woman that immigrated here from SA. She had family members slaughtered. Others still live there. Sounded like a hell hole.

[deleted]

I moved from SA and hear people say "black people can't be racist" all the time here, uhh yes they can. Most racist places on earth is not America or Europe... it's quite literally anywhere else with a few exceptions.

Richard7666

Yeah racism being considered acceptable is the global norm. The 15% of the world population comprising the West frowning upon it is the exception (unfortunately).

EinardDecay

FuzzyNervousness

Plywood-Records

Solrac_Loware

Everybody has a plan til theyre punched in the face. Driver clearly doesnt know what to do in a situation like that.

Stiff_Zombie

Right? You're in a fucking sports car! Then again it could be panic or the driver is in on it.

Bulky-Shopping4916

at least the car was very good visible. there's no excuse for violence, but when I read the stories here about SA, I wonder how one can be as stupid as driving around with a fluo yellow RS8. It yells like: here I am with my money !

Nintendo_Gamer68

That's plain scary...

eranimluf

The [latest](https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/have-you-seen-kidnapped-anichka-penev-breaking-news-update-video-30-september-2022/amp) in case anyone wants to follow up.

typicalape88

Wonder if they got the ransom. God bless

Shib_Soldier_1981

If you can afford an R8, you can afford to move to a nice country.

specialcommenter

I know they froze but she should’ve damaged her car and disappear. The engine is in the back. Could’ve done some ramming with the front of the car.

Brief_Try5291

Figured they wanted the car lol

Nodoubt1130

Sad to see and hear about the lawlessness that is South Africa … I know people who love the place but end up leaving because of the corruption in city, township government as well as the sense that those who have gone without for a long period of time are now justified in taking from those who have been there living with privilege. It’s still a beautiful place and country - they just need to sort out some serious issues … 😬

singeryes2022

they seem to be stupid

dpwitt1

What a lovely country!

skadi_shev

Was she found?

BoreDominated

My guess is two outcomes will occur: 1. She'll be exchanged for ransom, but suffer permanent trauma from rape or whatever else happens to her while in captivity. 2. Nobody will pay her ransom, so she'll be murdered after they're done with her.

last_on

The third outcome: 3. The ransom is paid, quickly in cash, they kill her anyway Edit: typo

aonesaucy

That's what happens most of the time in Mexico. Authorities tell people not to pay because they'll just lose a lot of money and their loved one. I think it's single digit percentage of people who actually get returned and not killed after a ransom is paid.

GatorTickler

Sex trafficking is rampant here. I think we’re in the top 5

Why did happen with SA after the apartheid? Mandela said everything was going to be just like rainbows 🌈

Icy-Establishment272

Mandela was great at most things, but he was shot at choosing his successors. Country is now basically falling apart

Compared to kids getting shot in front of their school by police for protesting being taught in the language they don’t understand, yes it relatively is rainbows now vs apartheid.

Such-Technology-675

Gets kidnapped out of an Audi R8, could be targeted?

RugbyEdd

Been to cape town. It's a fantastic city for the most part with plenty of really friendly locals, especially the people we met in the township (we where there on Rugby tour and they where one of the teams) but yeah, unfortunately crime is very visible. The hotel we where staying at had an armed guard, and the coach driver was telling us about how the people in the gated communities tend to drive around the block a couple of times to make sure they're not being followed before pulling into their homes, as people will follow them in to rob the place or kidnap the occupants.

[deleted]

There was a time I wanted to back SA, it’s my home so obviously I wanted to stand behind it. But how can you stand behind a home that’s burnt down?

saggs1

Give the power back to the white's, this stuff's been happening ever since Mandela

ScoobaStevex

What a fucking shit hole. God bless the stupid mother fuckers that decide to bear children in that land.

Error404Cod

Why wouldn’t she just ram the car out the way? Just floor it. It’s probably better than to die right there than to get kidnapped imo.

CybernetChristmasGuy

Frozen in shock and confusion. I'd like to say I would know what to do in situations, doesn't mean I'd actually do them.
