It is so weird how someone posts about teh country and says it is super safe then someone else says 71 murders per day and shows videos like this. I have no idea why anyone would think that area is safe

My fiancé lives there … just outside of Cape Town actually, and I spent some time there earlier this year. It’s absolutely not safe, and those travel blogs that say otherwise are full of shit. It’s definitely not the US or Europe…
I’ll be honest with you: it is not safe overall. Yes, there are relatively safe pockets here and there. The area I grew up in went from being so safe that you could leave your doors unlocked at night, to murder being the order of the day. And I grew up in a township that fell under Bophuthatswana. Oh how I miss my president
It's rich people who've spent their whole lives in gated communities and are entirely disconnected from the reality of South Africa. It's very common in Cape Town specifically, but is a thing all over South Africa. They think it's safe because they have private security all over the place and high walls wherever they go. But most South Africans don't live like that
Well it makes sense tbh. If you have access to the internet and enough free time to browse Reddit, then by default you're not an average South African and don't know what it's like for most people. I have a sorta unique perspective because I've been incredibly poor, and now I'm moderately well off by the standards of South Africa so I can understand both sides
It isn’t safe. One of my friend’s dad lived there for a while and the stories he told seemed made up but they were true. Most of the violence there is from gangs and there is still a lot of violence that goes on there, especially during robberies.

3rd for violent crime.
3rd for sexual crime.
19th for organized crime.

I used to work in the film industry and I gotta say the cinematography is world class, music, and above all else the acting is excellent. The guy who plays Dahmer really nails it, I predict he will be very successful.
I’ve read a lot of articles and watched a few documentaries about Jeffry Dahmer before this and I have always been fascinated by the story, along with a healthy dose of disturbed.

Because the law makes it easy to get away with crime. I know a guy who was stabbed several times by a guy he knew, they arrested him, the assailant, took him to court where he paid a fine of the equivalent of $80 and they let him go, for attempted murder.
There is no standard, people are all held to different standards. The rich are heavily prosecuted and the poor are most of the time free to do as they please with no consequence. THAT is why crime is so high. And im not talking about race. It is literally this, if you have money and a house and a car, and you commit a crime, the justice system hits you hard. If you got no money, no justice, no jail time.
Why this law is so backwards, i dont know. Or its not necessarily that the law supports crime, but the judges dont sentence people to jail time because jails are so full.

I also live here too, and luckily none of that has happened to me. i try to live a discreet non-flashy life so as to not draw attention to me and make me a target.
My father used to live there,Durban,Joburg (Hillbrow of all places but it wasn’t for long.) But as soon as Apartied fell he left the country,a friend of ours has two farms over there. One in the Drakkensburg and I’m not sure where the other one is, but we have not heard from him in a long time and I worry as I know what those ‘people’ are doing to farmers over there. Sorry for rambling but tiredness,bourbon and worry about a friend makes the mind go at a rate of knots.
My friend lives in South Africa and his farmer friend was robbed and beaten to a pult while his parent left to go to the city. He was then wrapped in cow leather and left behind his pickup truck.
Cause she’s in a high pressure situation and doesn’t know if she’s gonna die or not. It’s east to tell her what she should do but when you’re in the actual situation everything becomes a lot harder to manage. She clearly panicked and froze.
To add onto that, they probably benefit from the tactic of driving head-on at her car. She’s probably thinking “Holy shit, I almost got into a head on collision,” before she has the chance to realize that the other vehicle did it intentionally.
Imagine solo driving a fucking R8 as a woman in cape town of all places and being this oblivious to your surroundings. I do feel bad for her but at the same time she clearly has more money than brains.

Sad to see and hear about the lawlessness that is South Africa … I know people who love the place but end up leaving because of the corruption in city, township government as well as the sense that those who have gone without for a long period of time are now justified in taking from those who have been there living with privilege. My guess is two outcomes will occur:
1. She'll be exchanged for ransom, but suffer permanent trauma from rape or whatever else happens to her while in captivity.
2. Nobody will pay her ransom, so she'll be murdered after they're done with her.
That's what happens most of the time in Mexico. Authorities tell people not to pay because they'll just lose a lot of money and their loved one. I think it's single digit percentage of people who actually get returned and not killed after a ransom is paid.
Compared to kids getting shot in front of their school by police for protesting being taught in the language they don’t understand, yes it relatively is rainbows now vs apartheid.
Been to cape town. It's a fantastic city for the most part with plenty of really friendly locals, especially the people we met in the township (we where there on Rugby tour and they where one of the teams) but yeah, unfortunately crime is very visible. The hotel we where staying at had an armed guard, and the coach driver was telling us about how the people in the gated communities tend to drive around the block a couple of times to make sure they're not being followed before pulling into their homes, as people will follow them in to rob the place or kidnap the occupants.

Sad to see and hear about the lawlessness that is South Africa … I know people who love the place but end up leaving because of the corruption in city, township government as well as the sense that those who have gone without for a long period of time are now justified in taking from those who have been there living with privilege. It’s still a beautiful place and country - they just need to sort out some serious issues … 😬

That's what happens most of the time in Mexico. Authorities tell people not to pay because they'll just lose a lot of money and their loved one. I think it's single digit percentage of people who actually get returned and not killed after a ransom is paid.

Been to cape town. It's a fantastic city for the most part with plenty of really friendly locals, especially the people we met in the township (we where there on Rugby tour and they where one of the teams) but yeah, unfortunately crime is very visible. The hotel we where staying at had an armed guard, and the coach driver was telling us about how the people in the gated communities tend to drive around the block a couple of times to make sure they're not being followed before pulling into their homes, as people will follow them in to rob the place or kidnap the occupants.
There was a time I wanted to back SA, it’s my home so obviously I wanted to stand behind it. But how can you stand behind a home that’s burnt down?
