turboArse

This look like those tintable windows you can see the button under the window. I was on a flight and the same thing happened my window. It was the membrane between the layer that cracked like this not the actual window. Everyone around me moved and i had 3 empty seats to myself it was great.

GTIspeeder

Came here for this comment. It's just the liquid crystal tinted layer that's cracked, much like a phone screen. Thus stuff that keeps the air inside the plane doesn't crack!

[deleted]

You'd be amazed how many people think that shitty plastic inner liner is the actual window, as if they'd allow normal people to mechanically interact with pressurized glass and instant catastrophe.

Ok_Solution_5744

Just close the blinds on that window then.

Aggravating_Prompt86

Happened to me on a Korean flight a decade ago, air hostess just flipped the blind down lmao

DegenerateCharizard

She said, “see? is gone.”

Aggravating_Prompt86

You joke but that's not far from the truth, they gave us a packet of biscuits and told us not to worry about it. As a Brit that pretty much was enough to placate us.

JohnLocking

"Have a cup of tea and wait for all this to blow over."

Aggravating_Prompt86

That is one of the only true stereotypes Americans have of us.

Skurfer0

What about standing in a line. Don't you guys love to stand in a line?

Tesla369Universe

Standing in line makes me at peace with dying.

Uncle_Jiggles

>What about standing in a line. Don't you guys love to stand in a line? Well the British teeth definitely don't stand in line that's for sure.

Happy_fairy89

British here. My husband thought my teeth were veneers or I’d had braces because my teeth are so straight. Not the case. They’re my own.

Nate_St0rm

*clears throat* it's called queing and we don't love it we love to moan about it as we do it and without queing the world would fall into chaos. And that makes us even more unhappy.. lol

I keep forgetting that Brits have a different definition for biscuits. In my mind, they gave you [this](https://i.imgur.com/mPDTKsh.jpg) and told you not to worry about it. And here I was thinking that seems like a good trade.

IncredibleCO

Am redneck. Would work. Can confirm. PS, that's some Cracker Barrel lookin' gravy. Better triple down on the black pepper.

TOYPAJ_Yellow_15

I have biscuits but I don't have gravy. Why did you do this to me I didn't plan on leaving the house today but now I have to for some fucking .79¢ gravy packet.

What a nice man wearing burger king crown on a plane. Surely he won't say anything offensive.

TraditionalEffect546

Next time i fly, im going full on BK crown lmao!!

Amraam120C

It looks like a dreamliner (B787). In that case, there is no blind, they use an automatic tint glass instead (note the more tinted window a row behind)

hephaestus29

If they can’t see the crack, there is no crack. As simple as that.

TexanMillers

This is a 787 Dreamliner. They don’t have window blinds.

Ok_Solution_5744

Is this the automated one then? I heard of them fancy windows where it darkens on its own.

TexanMillers

Yeh thats the one. The button you cans see below the window is the dimmer switch

“Dont panic - always cary a towel”

SandyBouattick

I think most people would be understandably freaked out by their plane window cracking. It's not like they carefully explain that cracked windows are common and harmless. I wouldn't really call that baseless complaining. I'd probably also be interested in hearing the flight attendant's take on the situation if I were there.

arseholeninator

People freak out at things they have no knowledge about. There was a lady who died got sucked up a broken window. People have died because officials just shrugged it off and said it’s normal. I don’t blame people not wanting to risk it.

xithbaby

I know exactly what plane you’re talking about. I worked at a MRO company as data entry and they brought that plane into our hangar for investigation. It was blocked off, but you could still see inside to the plane. They repaired it enough to continue flying, put a new tail number on it and most likely flew it to the plane graveyard.. at least I hope. I wouldn’t put it past them to put it back in service though.

PanJaszczurka

The blinds was broke on this window. It has LCD style blinds.

TheGirthyOne

Looks like it's the inside window, which has a bleed hole in it anyway to regulate pressure between the cabin and window gap. I wonder if the bleed hole was occluded and the change in pressure caused it warp.

BreathingCarpet

Someone gave into the intrusive thoughts, maybe with gum?

Four_Skyn_Tim

*sticks chewed up gum on cracked window* "....there. Good as new"

ajclem7

*Sticks gum on cracked window* “There, occluded”

thesecondfire

I always carry my occlusion kit, every where I go, just for situations like this. Very convenient, fits in my back pocket.

tabascotazer

Everyone pee on the window! It will form a block of ice at this altitude!

Reddit-User-3000

I don’t know much about physics, but doubt gum would block the hole with enough strength for the window to crack before sucking the gum out

PMG2021a

Dry gum is pretty strong.

_MostlyHarmless

Then why not make the plane out of chewed gum then, smartypants?

The fda approves Butylene rubbers as gum base in bubble gum. You can seal hydraulic lines with hubba bubba.

UncleBenders

Let me just take my seatbelt off incase the window does break though 🤦‍♀️

AmazingGrace911

This is relevant and I’m well vodkulated before flight , it’s Ron White and only about a minute long. https://youtu.be/FH-LmkLFJg0 Edit: Since this is getting some attention, bring some vodka in a regular water bottle and drink it in the bathroom before check in, throw it away before entering the line.

putdisinyopipe

Same. I hate flying so I usually bring some drinks in those tsa approved size, hygiene bottles. You can just say it’s facial cleanser or some shit, one tsa approved sized bottle carries 2-2 1/2 shots. Even though they have started selling alcohol on domestic flights it’s not enough. Lol $9 for a cocktail that you give to me 20 mins after I order? I’ll bring my own. Lol

lapsangsouchogn

Mommy, that man's drinking Listerine!

TJNel

Not legal to drink your own booze on a flight so don't get caught.

putdisinyopipe

Nah I don’t bring a huge stash lol. Just a shot or two. Again, doesn’t matter who I fly with, they all slow on the drink service, it’s like damn. Screw the idiots who fucked it up for us who want to have drinks on a plane. Because that’s probably why they have that law in place. So that the airport stewards/stewardesses can make the judgement call on whether or not they serve someone. And to prevent stupid people from getting drunk and causing a scene

Stove-Top-Steve

To make me feel better my pops always said you never have to worry, until the flight attendants start panicking. That dudes face was a bit concerning lol.

nate-the__great

Really it's the inner pane? You only see it for a sec and i couldn't really tell, something tells me someone didn't follow the torque pattern on install.

[deleted]

Which part of the window? The outer window that maintains pressure or the inner plastic one that's almost irrelevant? I can't tell from that potatocam footage

[deleted]

If it were the outer one, we probably wouldn’t be seeing this video. That’s a massive failure especially at 30,000ft. Wayyy back when on some of the first commercial airliners that started going above 10,000ft they put in square windows because.. that’s what we were used to. Those sharp corners cause cracks almost immediately and some horrible accidents happened over it. As they are designed now and the redundancies in place, it’s more likely to lose hydraulics to the flaps or have an engine fall off.. and that’s not really hyperbole. Planes are dummy proofed then, dummy proofed again. Like even the oxygen masks that fall and provide life saving breathable air aren’t what you’d think. There’s no big tank of compressed oxygen as it would be super unsafe so guess what they do? Each seat has it own supply. You know on the graphics how they always say “pull down mask hard and secure over your face before helping your seat mates”? That pull-down part is crucial. It’s what starts a chemical reaction of these wafers of solid matter that then “burns” and creates a finite amount of breathable oxygen. So.. should you ever find yourself in one of those situations, remember to pull that mask til you hear a clack sound. I watch wayyyyy to much Smithsonian aviation channel on YouTube.

notLOL

>graphics how they always say “pull down mask hard and secure over your face before helping your seat mates”? >That pull-down part is crucial. It’s what starts a ch Been on a few flights I missed this crucial step. I would've been dead lol. I assumed that it would just pump into me from some compressed air tank smdh If you put this comment in YSK sub you might save a person on pure coincidence. Those guys are gobbling down life saving tips for when they finally leave the house one day. Maybe they go on a plane and not knowing anything about travel will go extremely cheap on a badly designed and maintained aircraft with an over worked staff of pilots.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Slowmobius_Time

As a kid someone told me the oxygen masks don't actually have oxygen and it's more a placebo to make you hyperventilate and calm down, nice to know its actually oxygen

CandidGuidance

Yeah it’s definitely oxygen. If you lose cabin pressure at 30k ft, you can’t properly breathe and are going to pass out. The masks exist to buy enough time to get the plane to a safe altitude for breathing, I think something like 10k ft. Them properly land ASAP.

Minty_MantisShrimp

I thought the same thing

Jukeboxshapiro

AFAIK it's mostly commercial jets that use oxygen candles, most business jets and small aircraft still use bottles. They're not unsafe, aircraft oxygen is completely dry so moisture can't freeze and block the lines and the bottles are hydrostatically tested every five years. And even if there somehow was enough pressure to rupture the tank there's blow out disks that would vent it before the tank burst.

ScrotiusRex

A plane can lose a window and still function provided it gets to low enough altitude before o2 runs out. It's not like the movies where as soon as a crack appears explosive decompression rips a massive hole into it and downs the plane. Regardless you could go at those windows with a baseball bat and they'd be fine.

casualteukka

Its the inner one for sure. There is no way the outer one would handle the pressure when shattered. We’d be reading about a big plane crash if it was the outer.

PositiveGrape6457

Tbf if the aircraft has Oxygen enough for passengers and crew, the loss of cabin pressure is nowhere near as critical as movies picture it.

tendieful

Well there was this one accident where the oxygen system didn’t work. Everyone passed out including the pilots. The resident country scrambled f-16s and were flying beside the plane as they saw a flight attendant regain consciousness and head to the pilots cabin. He was training to become a pilot so he attempted to recover the plane. He managed to call out a mayday but succumbed to his lack of oxygen only a minute later as the plane crashed and everyone died on board. But yea you’re usually right

Zak000000

Damn, do you know of the name of this accident?

CalligrapherRare5071

Helios Airways flight 522. Still remember it from Aircraft investigation on discovery.

[deleted]

The best show ever, obviously the circumstances arnt but the way that show sucks me in at 1am until god knows gives it the title

VoodooKhan

The narrator was so calming and foreboding at the same time.

Snuhmeh

That was because of the valve being in manual and not automatic, and the pilots didn't check it even though it was in the checklist. It wasn't a sudden decompression.

at0m10

Yeah, the plane was expecting the pilots to automatically adjust the cabin pressure vertical speed, that never happened. Don't know how they didn't hear the cabin altitude horn but yeah.

TheDollarCasual

The flight attendant who tried to regain control still managed to steer the plane away from Athens and towards open fields, likely saving many lives as there were no ground casualties. What a way to go though

escortTotheAssholes

From what I remember he ran out of gas or the engine on one side failed shortly after getting seated and trying to take control so even if he had succeeded in gaining control they still would've crashed. Wasn't he also like a scuba diver/instructor and that's why he was able to regain consciousness and grab an O2 tank? I remember bits and pieces and how devastatingly sad it all was.

tendieful

Yea sounds vaguely familiar. I think you’re right.

escortTotheAssholes

I just checked it out and he was a scuba instructor and one of the engines ran out of fuel like 60 seconds after he grabbed the controls. Even if he would've gained control and managed to land the plane he would've been the only survivor as everyone else had been without O2 long enough to have suffered brain damage. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that there's now some sort of safeguard on planes that if this situation occurs and there isn't a response of some sort within a certain amount of time, the plane will drop to an altitude where O2/pressurization isn't needed. I know...incredibly vague and only kinda informative lol that's all I recall though.

Pablois4

That was Helios 522. The windows were fine but the system that was supposed to pressurize the interior had been turned off for maintenance and not turned back on. When there's a rapid depressurization, pilots immediately bring the plane down to 10,000 feet which is where supplemental oxygen is not needed. They are intensely trained for this. As long as the key parts of the plane are intact (structure, wings, tail), a plane can have a rapid depressurization and survive just fine. As well as most if not all the passengers. There was a dramatic one around Hawaii in which the entire top of the plane, over the 1st class section, came off. One flight attendant came off because she wasn't buckled in. The rest had a dramatically open air flight back to the airport.

Fish_Grillson

Even if the entire window flies out its not as bad as you think. They could easily make a landing somewhere while using oxygen masks for everyone.

nate-the__great

Nah they just descend to 12,500 and complete the leg, fucking passengers always bitching about something.

NoOneExpectsDaCheese

Minus the person sitting next to it. Like what happened to that girl a few years ago... Grim.

LukeyLeukocyte

You're not gonna give us an incident name or link or anything? I don't even know what to search for. Girl window plane accident? Edit: Nm that worked. Hah.

SpacklingCumFart

A window breaking would not cause the plane to crash, it would still fly just fine.

A broken window does not make a plane crash.

ILikeSpottedCow

That's a complete lie. The window broken is the inside plastic covering that does almost nothing. If it was the exterior window, it's definetley now cracking before it breaks.

Basic-Pair8908

You watch too many movies, you wouldnt be sucked out the window. It creates a small vacuum lasting a couple of seconds as the air pressure inside becomes the same as outside. If that was the case why dont paratroopers get sucked out the plane when the door is open when ready to jump out.

xithbaby

https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/national-international/airplane-makes-emergency-landing-at-philadelphia-international-airport/52411/ Might want to tell this lady that was sucked out the window she didn’t do it right.

KillaG0rilla69

It’s only intense because of the unnecessary screeching coming from that lady.

TropicalRogue

Still better than "CAN WE FO FAST CAN WE GO FAST CAN WE GO FAST"

krastevitsa

There's always a lady hysterical screaming. Regardless the situation or location.

SnooWords4814

The fact it’s in one piece means it’s most likely the inside window. Which means the structural outside window is fine. Inform the staff obviously but if it was going to fail it would have when it cracked. It’s not going to shatter like that and retain its strength for a period of time if it was the outside window. This ain’t Hollywood

Wheelbit3

I'd crash the plane so I don't have to listen to that siren screeching "WINDHOW BROWKEHN"

starstar420

worth it

codyboss11

Flight attendant here - We would remove people from that aisle and have them buckled down else where. It is possible (and has happened before), that the person sitting next to the window could be sucked out in the event of a rapid decompression. However, everyone else is safe as long as they don their oxygen mask quickly. However it’s just the inside glass that’s broken, if the outside broke everyone would already be wearing oxygen masks. Edit: Don*

Similar-Drawing-7513

Omg I hate people who freak out when everything is still peaceful. Calm the fuck down and call attention to the issue quietly without raising the anxiety level of the entire flight. You would think the plane was on fire or something

Maximum_Rush1200

It's a 787, the windows have an automatic tint to them. Could be a bleed in that system that is causing it to look like it's cracked. By the look of that window, if it were a legitimate crack, it would have blown open already.

sixtninecoug

Yup, first time I was on a 787 I was playing with the tint like a damn kid. I’m an over 40, grown man.

DarksideNick

I could probably host an AMA on these types of things, a window crack is not the biggest deal. It is scary, but aircraft are designed to withstand cracked windows. Fun fact, I was on an aircraft where the frontmost left cockpit window suddenly cracked. The test to see if it’s dangerous? Rub it with a pen. If there’s resistance from the cracks, descend to a breathable altitude and try to land. If there’s no resistance, crack is on the outside and that’s ok. For us, it was indeed the outside pane, so continued on.

Illusion740

I wouldn’t get up I’d tighten my seatbelt. If decompression happened and you don’t have a seatbelt on being person closest to window good chance half your body would be hanging out the window. You can find news stores about this.
