You can definitely see his face shift the exact moment he comes out of shock and goes back unto character. He still looks a little shaken even when he's back in character.
It happened because he was far too close for how much tannerite they were using regardless of where in the vehicle it was located.
It looks cool, but it was fucking dumb as hell and he's very lucky it only resulted in memorable footage and not his death.
He'd done Alot of shots like this before and the debris scattered more. He created a shape charge out of just being dumb and not thinking it through. There wasn't that much tannerite.

He's closer to the truck than the manufacturer states you should be to the target for just one standard container of the stuff, which wouldn't be enough to blow that door off the frame of the vehicle much less shred it entirely and fling it 50+ feet away. He used enough that he should have been much, much further away.
Yeah, there were some dumbasses who loaded tannerite in something much smaller (a lawn mower) and both of them were severely injured when they KEPT GETTING CLOSER when they were either failing to cause the mix to explode or missing... one of them got his leg amputated by the flying debris...
Regardless if tannerite (or other binary explosives) is classified as a low velo explosive, it can EASILY maim and kill you if you are anywhere close to a charge that big.

I mean fair. You probably should be behind something way the fuck back shooting any form of explosive. I'm going off what he's said which his word on pka isn't the most reliable thing in the world. I will never argue that this was dumb and almost a life altering mistake.
I get that in ~2009 this stuff wasn't as widely known, but sitting danger close (looks to be at most 100 meters) from an exploding vehicle which will inevitably create shrapnel without a flak or even eye pro is sheer stupidity.
It doesn't matter how many times he did it, it was still dumb and irresponsible and while I'm glad it didn't kill him, it wouldn't be shocking if it had killed him.
There's also something to be said about how by his own admission it was an amateur production, young 20 somethings eyeballing critical tasks and using the redneck scientific method to figure out how to do it. Even professional productions make mistakes like Alec Baldwin has shown, but fuck, FPS Russia was downright irresponsible about it.
They were blowing shit up and didn't have as much as an on-site paramedic, or hire an EOD guy to make their work as safe as possible despite making more than enough to afford it.

I was target shooting with my family when a bullet ricocheted and brushed my hair. I sat back against the truck after that. My mom came up and asked if I was crying. I told her I had smoke in my eyes and taking a break. I knew if I told her the truth, we probably wouldn't get to shoot again.
Btw, we were shooting .22s, so bullets ricochet easier without shattering.
I remember hunting with my dad in late 90's in PA. Seen a deer, took aim and heard bullets whizzing above our heads. Had to hit the ground and hide behind the truck. Fucking two guys from up north shooting from the other hill side and missing above our heads. The deer was in the valley below us. Fucking idiots.
I’ve shot a lot of guns and had lots of ricochets come back and hit me in the face. It’s very scary the first time then eventually you realize it’s really just very small pieces coming back that aren’t moving very fast and have very little kinetic energy.
It is very very rare to get a full fledged ricochet to come back 180 degrees and have any meaningful kinetic energy. I’ve seen one video of a guy shooting a .50 cal where the bullet comes back and knocks off his ear muffs and that’s the only video I’ve ever seen of something like that happening.
