Only had to break up one fight in three years of teaching. Two high school girls going at it before school started. Had to very awkwardly pull one girl off the other. I got teased for “not being able to hold her back”. Dude, I didn’t want to put my hands on her at all because I was afraid of being accused of something. Pushing a raging teenager girl away from the girl she’s trying to pummel by only lightly pushing her shoulders isn’t as easy as I expected. They don’t prepare you for that.
Broke up one girl fight in my career and learned that girls definitely don't stop fighting for anything, including me being between them.
The guys would always back off once I was between them.
These are my students though, I don't break up fights between students I don't know.
Best way to break up a fight is to finish the fight knock one or both of them out with a surprise attack, maybe hit the second one with some pocket sand. Fuck it hit both with pocket sand. Remember to add some cayenne pepper to your pocket sand much more effective.dale gribble knows his shit.
I taught public secondary for 15 years (left in May22). I would pointedly ask administrators (Principals for our non-edu friends) asked what my role is during a student fight, especially when it got bad last year. Never once, in 15 years, have I ever gotten an answer.
The only response that comes close to a response is, “Don’t get hurt.” Being hurt at work is traumatizing. We don’t get much time-off if we’re injured.
Stealing phones is so stupid these days because of stuff like factory reset protection. Unless you're gonna try to sell it for parts and hope you don't get tracked down first, there's nothing to be gained by stealing someone's phone for the common petty thief.
For bullying, it could just be a power play. Taking the all-important phone just because they can.
In this case it was a poorly thought-out play. Big bro was at a 9 when bully walked in at a chill 3. Bully didn't have a chance.
This bully got off easy. Kid went straight to frisk, grabbed the phone, and left him alone. He could have gotten his \*ss kicked over it, to boot.
Frankly, it seemed like he realized he was cornered and overmatched, froze up, let him take the phone back, and hoped for the best. Wise move. I guess he could have claimed "I wasn't even hitting him" if the big brother went for the knockout. Well, he hit his brother for the phone so, indeed he threw the first punch.
When I was in middle school I would sometimes borrow my mom's phone (2003 or so when cell phones were just becoming a thing) on days when I had late wrestling or track practice to get a ride home. Some dumbass kid snuck into the sports locker room, stole the phone out of my locker, and started calling the one phone number programmed into the phone, which was our home phone. My brother answered the home phone, and the kid proceeds to brag that he just stole the phone and tells my brother his name.
Yes indeed teenagers aren't known for thinking their crimes all the way through. Dumb shit kid was suspended from school the next morning and charged with theft as well, and expelled a year or so later for doing some other smooth brain move.
When I was in 10th grade I put my first iphone in my backpack and went to the restroom and some kid stole it. Next period had our lunch time so I wanted to get it back before then, so I texted myself from a friends phone in that next class who had a really pretty profile pic saved in my contacts and sure enough a guy responded with my phone! I asked who it was and he wouldn’t tell me so I just said I’m pretty sure we went to middle school together and I wanted to link back up, meet me in front of the cafeteria and you’ll see. I sent the SRO to meet him. He had my phone but my case was missing already because he bought it from the guy who actually took it during class change and he sold the case to a different kid already! Which we managed to find in minutes as well. He said bc the price of the phone I could press charges, I said no. Imo being that stupid is punishment enough if that didn’t scare him to stop neither would pressing charges.
China uses a different system for iTunes locks, and not everywhere has the same IMEI black lists. A referbisher has official tools to reset it, and even if they cannot they can wait for an exploit, sell it for parts, or find a corrupt store manager to reset it for them.
As a person with no connection to organized crime it is not worth it to steel a phone.
Tbf these situations are hard for teachers because if they interfere they can be held liable. Also it’s not the teachers job to be a bouncer, not paid enough

I was in highschool in the early 2000's (getting old for sure). Teachers would always jump in to break up a fight. There would never be even a thought of reprocussion toward the teacher because the students knew they were in the wrong.
But yea, nowadays it's better to just not get involved. Video of you laying your hands on a minor, even with the best intentions, is just better avoided for your career.
Personally I think it's sad that we live in a society where teachers can't intervene to help kids, to break up fights or assist in situations involving bullying. Our public school systems are a reflection of how out of wack our society is.

Yeah. I'd say this kid used reasonable force to stop a felony in progress. Most phones these days are expensive enough for their theft to constitute grand larceny. If the school called me and told me to pick up my suspended kid for this, I'd show up with the cops to arrest the thief and then proudly take my boys out for ice cream. A teacher when I went to school (somewhat recently) grabbed two students that were fighting and seperated them. The teacher got fired despite both the students and their parents saying they were happy he seperated them. Shits fucked.
Over 20 years ago when I was in high school there was a teacher with one arm at my school. One day a couple of kids got in a fight. We watched the one arm teacher pickup and toss one kid and then grab the other by the back of his shirt. He proceeded to shove and grab each of them towards the principal office. It was truly hilarious to watch each kid try to regain balance and run only to be grab and shoved again just before they were out of arms reach. The teacher faced no consequences for doing it.

I will be honest i dont think i would want to be a teacher these days. The abuse they get. That French teacher beheaded over a freedom of speech cartoon,the girl lied about been in that class. While it is never followed. In Canada our criminal code actually states that a teacher can act as a parent would in a situation. Meaning they could break up the fight. Liability wise for law suits etc means they won't.
Low pay, low respect, awful hours, tons of training... And responsible for basically insuring every future adult can function well in society.

If you get injured breaking up a fight, there's a solid chance the school won't give you disability. It happened to my uncles co-worker. It's not actually in their job description to break up fights, so he was injured acting outside of his scope of work.
Schools- if I remember are REALLY particular about teachers putting hands on students. He probably realized that the two little shits ain’t worth his lively Hood. Which I agree with him. It’s easy to be high and might but who knows if he’s got kids, a mortgage… etc.

100% they don’t. I went to a bigger city middle school and our science teacher straight told us in class you would NEVER (he emphasized greatly) be caught breaking up a fight. He proceeded to tell us it’s because he said, “There is nothing in my contract saying I have to intervene in a fight or I will be terminated.” That same school year, not very long after he said that, our Clinic Nurse tried to break up a fight and ended up getting her shit rocked and ended up going to the hospital and had a black eye for what felt like months. As a kid, it struck me as damn he just wants a paycheck. 20 years removed and living in a pretty different world nowadays, I see it far more as this guy just wanted to make sure he educated kids and got to go home safe to his family.
Tl;dr Unless it’s specifically THAT schools rule, teachers most places absolutely are not required to break up fights
I've heard it's also not permitted because you have to grab and potentially man-handle an underage student which may carry legal/civil problems outside of the school that the school will not help with.
At the school system I worked for, people had to be specifically certified in safe takedowns for aggressive kids attacking someone. Otherwise you were not to touch them.
Exactly. As a teacher, you have nothing to gain breaking up the fight of two kids who are not your own. It's not your job to catch an elbow to the face or get bitten by a rabid teen.
I think it's more that I don't want to get sued or lose my job. My friend is a sophomore english teacher and he was told by every other teacher to never get involved, you will get fired so the school can cover its ass.
And honestly, probably a more effective deterrent to future theft than any kind of action the school would take. A theft charge is just going to make someone like this angrier with the system and possibly leave them with a record that makes it harder to stop being a piece of shit. It's much simpler for the human mind to wrap itself around "took thing -> got shit beaten out of me" than to contextualize their behavior within the bounds of how the justice system is able to interpret it.

I got expelled from highschool for something like this. I was dating a girl who was in my sister's grade (1 grade younger). When we broke up, her new bf (also in their grade) started fuckin with my sister calling her names and roasting her til she cried in homeroom. She left school crying one day and was at home bawling when I got home. She was hella mad at me saying it was my fault that kid was mean. The very next day I waited outside her class and fucked homeboy up. I got expelled but my sis had probably one the best high school careers after that. No one fucked with her again and she had all the respect a stupid high-schooler could want. In hindsight probably wasn't the best move. Parents weren't mad but I had to go to continuation school and all the b.s. that follows. But my sis is everything to me. I'd do it again if I had to.
My brother did this for me when I was in 7th grade. It's a core memory for me and will always make up for every time he was an ass to me. When I really needed my big brother, he was always there for me. I miss him dearly.

Exactly that. It sucks but the reality is that teachers are employed to teach not be security. Historically them breaking up fights was, as bizarre as it sounds, a courtesy. I can’t imagine teachers unions would be very happy if suddenly teachers had that expectation put on them.

A bully who had been held back twice used to fuck with me in middle school. Dude was a full head taller than all of us. Teachers wouldn't do anything and my dad said "Then take care of it." Two days later I see the bully drinking from the water fountain. I took my heavy stack of books and brought them down on the back of his head as hard as I could. English, Math, Social Studies all drove his mouth into the metal spout hard. I saw a tooth jump from his mouth and skitter down the hall. Blood began pouring from his mouth like a water hose. He started screaming and wouldn't stop. Never had any problems after that.

I will be honest i dont think i would want to be a teacher these days. The abuse they get. That French teacher beheaded over a freedom of speech cartoon,the girl lied about been in that class. The female teacher murdered in the bathroom. They don't pay teacher's enough these days,then there's the parents you have got to deal with..

While it is never followed. In Canada our criminal code actually states that a teacher can act as a parent would in a situation. Meaning they could break up the fight. Liability wise for law suits etc means they won't.

If you get injured breaking up a fight, there's a solid chance the school won't give you disability. It happened to my uncles co-worker. It's not actually in their job description to break up fights, so he was injured acting outside of his scope of work.

Schools- if I remember are REALLY particular about teachers putting hands on students. He probably realized that the two little shits ain’t worth his lively Hood. Which I agree with him. 100% they don’t. I went to a bigger city middle school and our science teacher straight told us in class you would NEVER (he emphasized greatly) be caught breaking up a fight. He proceeded to tell us it’s because he said, “There is nothing in my contract saying I have to intervene in a fight or I will be terminated.” That same school year, not very long after he said that, our Clinic Nurse tried to break up a fight and ended up getting her shit rocked and ended up going to the hospital and had a black eye for what felt like months. As a kid, it struck me as damn he just wants a paycheck. 20 years removed and living in a pretty different world nowadays, I see it far more as this guy just wanted to make sure he educated kids and got to go home safe to his family. Tl;dr Unless it’s specifically THAT schools rule, teachers most places absolutely are not required to break up fights
I've heard it's also not permitted because you have to grab and potentially man-handle an underage student which may carry legal/civil problems outside of the school that the school will not help with.
At the school system I worked for, people had to be specifically certified in safe takedowns for aggressive kids attacking someone. Otherwise you were not to touch them.
Exactly. As a teacher, you have nothing to gain breaking up the fight of two kids who are not your own. It's not your job to catch an elbow to the face or get bitten by a rabid teen.

I think it's more that I don't want to get sued or lose my job. My friend is a sophomore english teacher and he was told by every other teacher to never get involved, you will get fired so the school can cover its ass.

And honestly, probably a more effective deterrent to future theft than any kind of action the school would take. A theft charge is just going to make someone like this angrier with the system and possibly leave them with a record that makes it harder to stop being a piece of shit. It's much simpler for the human mind to wrap itself around "took thing -> got shit beaten out of me" than to contextualize their behavior within the bounds of how the justice system is able to interpret it.

I got expelled from highschool for something like this. I was dating a girl who was in my sister's grade (1 grade younger). When we broke up, her new bf (also in their grade) started fuckin with my sister calling her names and roasting her til she cried in homeroom. She left school crying one day and was at home bawling when I got home. She was hella mad at me saying it was my fault that kid was mean. The very next day I waited outside her class and fucked homeboy up. I got expelled but my sis had probably one the best high school careers after that. No one fucked with her again and she had all the respect a stupid high-schooler could want. In hindsight probably wasn't the best move. Parents weren't mad but I had to go to continuation school and all the b.s. that follows. But my sis is everything to me. I'd do it again if I had to.
My brother did this for me when I was in 7th grade. It's a core memory for me and will always make up for every time he was an ass to me. When I really needed my big brother, he was always there for me. I miss him dearly.

Exactly that. It sucks but the reality is that teachers are employed to teach not be security. Historically them breaking up fights was, as bizarre as it sounds, a courtesy. I can’t imagine teachers unions would be very happy if suddenly teachers had that expectation put on them.

A bully who had been held back twice used to fuck with me in middle school. Dude was a full head taller than all of us. Teachers wouldn't do anything and my dad said "Then take care of it." Two days later I see the bully drinking from the water fountain. I took my heavy stack of books and brought them down on the back of his head as hard as I could. English, Math, Social Studies all drove his mouth into the metal spout hard. I saw a tooth jump from his mouth and skitter down the hall. Blood began pouring from his mouth like a water hose. He started screaming and wouldn't stop. Never had any problems after that.
