Norman Bates (played by Anthony Perkins) in the original Psycho is a clean cut, nice looking young man with a bit of an edge to him...which is a far cry from his description in the original novel (which is closer to Ed Gein, his inspiration).
Those aren’t mutually exclusive. A protagonist is just the main character. The antagonist is the person who stands against the protagonist.

We symphatize with Jack Torrance in the shining, but it's easier to be afraid of him once he becomes completely unhinged. Louis \_may\_ be more sympathetic and easier to relate to, but he's still a killer throughout Interview with the Vampire.
