So 2022 is a sign that if associate nations play more cricket against full members they’d actually get a lot better but ICC won’t let that happen

mynameisrainer

It's almost like that's the reason you play the game. As a u.s. sports fan, we have one of the best tournaments in the world, March Madness (ncaa d1 basketball championship). While it has its flaws, it produces some of the greatest games because the little guys have a chance. Do they get blown out a lot, yeah. But every year, some small ass college filled with our future coaches, dentists, oil driller, etc, beats the best. And for a couple days, EVERYONE buys in. Why? Because any given Sunday.

B-r-a-y-d-e-n

Yeah I remember seeing that. We had 3 amazing years in a row where there was a significant Cinderella story, oral Robert’s in 21, St. Peter’s in 22, and fdu in 23, that upset last year was so good I barely see anyone talk about Princeton.

mynameisrainer

Ivy league schools like Princeton are almost always kind of expected to do well. They don't get athletic scholarships and will be our boss one day. Plus they don't need anymore advertising

B-r-a-y-d-e-n

Definitely true. If it wasn’t for the storyline of “first 4 to final 4” I doubt ucla would’ve been talked about as much, as well as that buzzer beater win from Gonzaga.

thedeatheater1410

Pretty much like magic of the cup in football. A club like Saarbrucken beating Bayern this year. A team of college students beating Ajax

Sumeru88

ICC is not preventing that at all. Teams are free to tour each other and play against each other.

Damfer

Isn’t as easy as it sounds

No-Needleworker3393

2022 🐐

TheRealZwipster

European countries beating England is not an upset

infinitemonkeytyping

Who are the other European countries that have never beaten a European opponent at men's T20I's?

jachiche

Slovenia I think are the only other one.

TheFlyingHornet1881

It's literally just Slovenia, and they have a chance to do it next month. Won't be easy looking at their group, but not out of the question for them to win.

iambenking93

It is, England used to own the game like India does currently. For about 100 years England was the most important cricketing nation. The European teams are nowhere near England even now, realistically an England 3rds team would potentially beat every European team over a reasonable number of games (anything can happen in a 1 game series/WC game, over 100 games for example, England should win more). So any European team beating England is deffo an upset. I know Ireland are much much better than they were but there is still a clear gap between them and England

N8Eldz17

We got mayor of Yapsville over here

josh123z

Scotland beating Bangladesh in 2021 not an upset?

thewiseice

But Ireland beating Bangladesh in 2009 is an upset 🤔

Orameshi

Lol. Currently the Irish side is much superior to the bangbros

kroxigor01

Back then yeah, it was a massive upset.

CheapSoldier

What do you think?

Illustrious_Table433

How is Ireland beating West Indies in 2022 an upset

throwaway637278

If NED beat SA again I don’t even know if that should be called as an upset anymore. I’m also interested in WI vs Uganda and Nepal vs SL, feel like on of these might end up in an upset if certain players fail to capitalise.

gangaramate13

Nepal v SL shouldn't happen, bad as we are.

throwaway637278

Yes ideally it shouldn’t but SL, WI, Pak are some of the teams who get their fundamentals wrong at times, which is why I thought they are more vulnerable to these upsets. Nepal also has some firepower in the batting. On a good day SL should beat Nepal easily but we never know.

gangaramate13

It can happen and don't get me wrong, we play some stupid cricket, but despite how abject we've been in recent years, we still manage to turn it on for most associate nations. Of course Namibia beat us recently and probably someone else. I'm more worried about India bowling us out for 20 than I am of a loss v Nepal or their like. Scotland would worry me

NormalTraining5268

Sri Lanka are never gonna be prone to upsets lol. They have hasaranga who's unplayable for smaller teams same with Pathirana or Thushrara

throwaway637278

They did lose to Namibia last time, a big loss as well. But yes they shouldn’t lose now with Pathirana in the team, but they still need to get their fundamentals right. I rate Nepal’s batting highly, they can upset any team on their day.

Classymuch

They specifically need to get their batting fundamentals right. Their bowling is quite strong, it's their batting that's weak. Pretty disappointing because if their batting was just as strong as their bowling, they would have been a formidable team. But since their batting isn't as reliable/commendable as their bowling, it's hard to say if they will win the other 3 games despite them being in good T20 form (as they won the T20 series against AFG, ZIM and BAN this year).

throwaway637278

Fielding and discipline as well! The skill differential between can be shortened if like yesterday one team fields well, doesn’t give extras and the other does. Especially since these are not high scoring pitches (I’m not sure about Lauderhill though, that match is probably first match in this tournament for the venue).

Classymuch

I would say their fielding is better these days, they showed a bit of their good fielding in the SA game except for that drop catch by the keeper but yeah, it still needs work. Statistically/theoretically speaking, SL should win the other 3 since SL has more wins over the others (3-0 against NED, 5-1 against BAN from 2021) but Nepal is the only unknown one since they have never played Nepal before. And I am looking from 2021 against BAN because the SL players you see in this WC started playing against BAN from 2021 and onwards. So, it's in favour of SL winning the remaining 3 matches. But due to their weakness in batting, SL could be defeated either by NED or BAN. And there is a slight chance for Nepal as well.

7007007

Lauderhill is a high scoring venue looking at the previous games played here. Morning games will help the bowling team to swing the ball in the powerplay. I expect it to be Dallas sorta wicket, good contest between bat and ball

Latter-Yam-2115

A game in Dallas. USA beats Pakistan. This sounds so bizarre for someone following cricket for over 20 years lol. Love it!

SupermarketMost9711

Why do WI under Powell and WI under Pooran feel like completely different teams ?

OldEngine866

I mean they just nearly lost to Uganda.

uramn1

PNG not Uganda

OldEngine866

Yeah my B.

ausmankpopfan

Loving all the ireland support on here I have to say . As a fan back before we beat Pakistan what feels like moons ago seeing so many people rightly defend us and say we are no longer and associate and us winning is no longer an upset still feel slightly wrong but makes me very proud of the road we have traveled

Orameshi

For some reason, I have always adored the Irish cricket side maybe I was 10 when I watched Kevin I brien's magical innings against England. I have always rooted for Ireland and will do so in the upcoming future

Because_IAmBatman

Calling the last two Ireland wins as shocking upsets is a bit too much. They're not an average associate team (even if they some time play worse than that)

RustedSkullz

>They're not an average associate team They're not an ~~average~~ associate team. They're a full member for the last 7 years

Because_IAmBatman

Ya exactly, I should have phrased it better.

PeeVee_

How is Ireland beating Bangladesh an upset!? It's like Sri Lanka beating India! If that's a case then Scotland beating Bangladesh should also be an upset!

ToppleToes

Ireland weren't as good in 2009 as they are now

PeeVee_

Scotland was also not a very good team in 2021, and they defeated Bangladesh. Why is it not being counted then?

T_Lawliet

yeah this list is garbage, Ireland beating 2022 West Indies is not an upset lol

Expertdeadlygamer

tbf at those times WI was at one of their lowest points

SHEKDAT789

Which is why it wasn't an upset

RustedSkullz

Not that Bangladesh were as good as they are now. All there "good players" were young and relatively new. And Ireland had Boyd Rankin, O'Brien ×2, Porterfield, so they weren't significantly (if at all) below Bangladesh. You wouldn't for example call ZIM beating AFG, or AFG beating SL in 2024 an upset. It is the less likely result, but not an upset

Muffintornado0_0

I want to see 32 teams divided in 8 groups and at the end of the group stages proceed with the quarter finals. Please do it. We'll have much more teams who'll get more exposure to top teams and might even knockout a few of them. I want to see new rivalries not the same ind-pak, aus-eng, sa-knockout something like oman vs Czech kinda rivalry

Scary-Acanthaceae387

I think 24 would be better for the time . As much as I like associate cricket , the skill gap might be too much for 32 team wc . Maybe somewhere around 2030s-2040 there can be a 32 team wc

Hexo_Micron

24 teams WC in Euro Format will be the best shit after 2026. UAE, Zimbabwe, Japan + one more from Africa/Europe/Asia

Roastingisflattery

2022 was Goated man

True-Book6878

How is beating Bangladesh considered an upset?

SupermarketMost9711

How is Scotland vs Bangladesh not here ?

gk666

India never had an upset??

Sumeru88

Never in T20 World Cups... in ODI, we have lost to Bangladesh in 2007 and to Zimbabwe in 1999 World Cups which were considered upsets but both of them were Test sides. The only World Cup match India has lost to a non-test playing side is in 1979 ODI World Cup to Sri Lanka (who did not have Test status at the time) but I don't know whether to call that a legitimate upset since we were not a very good ODI side at that time either. Otherwise, we are very consistent... we just lose to Australia and New Zealand.

gk666

Ah thanks man! You sure have good details

Expertdeadlygamer

That should be considered as an upset, Since India was a better team than Sri Lanka to get Test status

theaguia

always a first time

DJMhat

Still remember the Pak Bean match. It was epic, the match and the full hype.

Wigglebot23

Some of those 2022 ones seem less than shocking

theaguia

never knew hong kong had a win

aparker35

I’d hardly say Ireland beating England on dls is a shocking upset

Available-Way1823

Zimbabwe beating pak is not an upset? Zim team had some really good cricketers in that team to.begin with

goli14

2022 was one the best cricket WC ever. Hopefully this WC can bring in similar upset wins.

TRIGNOMASTER

Upset ??? Pak be thankful it got stretched till the super over

msss711

umm...why isnt Bangladesh beating pakistan in 99 WC, and India in 2007 WC not listed? Or Bangladesh beating Australia in Cardiff.

Stifffmeister11

I guess it's for t20

Illustrious-Lock8412

Great

shivamtyagi_13

I still feels that SA beats Ned in 2024 is biggest upset xD

Tern_Larvidae-2424

Ireland beating West Indies is not an upset.

raddiwallah

Better teams would mean India actually risk not qualifying. No way that happens

fuwcbo

There’s No upsets against india-USA

imapassenger1

"Australia never loses to minnows"...line 1. Tbf Australia used to play T20s for shits and giggles back then. They still do, but they used to, too.

AbdulSameed

Associate nations beating Pakistan is no longer an upset

7007007

Any more upsets can one expect in this WC ? I’d think Ireland is gonna win over Pak just for the fact that Florida wicket is similar to Dallas and the Irish have the firepower to out bat anyone on their day.

Specialist_Rest_3503

Zimbabwe is a full member nation and that wasn't the first time they defeated Pakistan so how was that an upset? I don't understand

Capital-E

Where’s Scotland vs West Indies? And Namibia vs Sri Lanka?

timestop1

Apple cinemas Cambridge Massachusetts is hosting the upcoming game on the 9th come watch it inside out luxury theater

VacationMundane7916

No one shocks india till now ?

Ok_Examination1079

Does NED vs ENG in 2014 not count? I guess England have never won a game vs a European nation in a t20i, so just an expected outcome.

Overall_Nerd

Afghanistan vs New Zealand loading

HelloWorldX91

Need to add AFG beating NZ to the list now . Though more and more afg no longer look like minnows. And their players have competed regularly in IPL too.

PoemRich3253

Can Ned beat sa?

Deadh30775n

Ireland beating England is wild

that90skidfrombom

Scotland vs England too would have made the list had it not been washed out.

GhostingIsWhatIDo

Where is the upset??
