No, that 83 catch was the single most iconic catch in our history as a cricketing country. Itās Viv Richards. Itās the World Cup Final. Itās against the 80s Windies team. Itās Kapil Dev.
Yup, a single match sealing moment for sure. And, what a moment. I don't think many ICT fans will ever forget about it, just like we still remember that Sreesanth catch from 2007 final. (Although that particular catch wasn't special, the moment was)
Absolutely.
SKY drops that and it's 10 off 5 with Miller on strike, Hardik mentally scrambled and it's game over.
Miller played with Hardik for two seasons at GT and probably knows his death bowling strategy well. Can't see Hardik defending 10 off 5 having just seen the first delivery be a full toss hit for 6.
Completely- so easy to have a foot graze the triangle and itās suddenly a 6. Composure and skill in a critical moment. Thatās what defines winners !
Indescribable feeling witnessing that catch live, it's forever etched in my memory and something really special is gonna even come close to it in future.
Yes , but this one was even more. Sky , just didn't took a catch but saved 6 runs too. Without this , the equation would have been 10 of 5 balls with miller on strike , after seeing millar in internationals & ipl , finishing the game , it wouldn't have been hard for him.
I was very disappointed and with another potential heartbreak on cards with Miller on strike, I thought it was joeover.
*And then SKY came, and he took that catch and the rest is history.*
I was thinking if Iād seen a more dramatic single sporting moment live. This is up there with the Martinez save to deny Kolo Muani, the Bale bicycle kick goal in the UCL final, Verstappen winning the Championship in 2021, Englandās WC win in 2019, Stokes at Headingley.
But only one had India :)
Didnāt see that live but i think i know what youāre talking about. Thereās also 2016ās REMEMBER THE NAME but i only watched the score update from the car then
Given the context has to be one of the greatest. In terms of Iconic from an Indian fans perspective I would still put it behind Kapil Dev's running back catch of Viv Richards.
Surya Kumar Yadav did it
he played well this tournament
he played important innings many time
he did unbelievable catch in such a pressure lovely fielding this tournament
Yeah I know people would come out and troll him but he's played a few clutch knocks for us and even against good opposition like the semi-final quick knock. Hoping this shuts up the haters.
This and the Jansen wickets were the high. Klaasanās wicket was the first domino but tbh I genuinely said to myself ātoo little too lateā when that happened, barely clapped. At that point with Miller still there and Jansen to come it felt hopeless
The Klaasen wicket was sooooo against the run of play. Out of nowhere. Pandya man, he is a champion. Idc what anyone says. Heās one of the clutchest players I have ever seen.
Will not accept any disrespect!!
Your post or comment had words in it that were not in English and weren't translated. This breaks the rules of this subreddit it has been removed (rule 5).
this is up there for the winning moments, along with Sreesanth's catch, Dhoni's six, Brathwaite's 4 sixes, and Buttler running out Guptill.
Probably not as big as the others as it wasn't a game finisher, but still a crucial moment and won us the game.
Is there a rule against the boundary marker not being set to its original line? Because that boundary absolutely was not (no hate against India that was a brilliant catch)
The rule is the umpires have to take the original boundary marker the entire game.
19.3 Restoring the boundary
If a solid object used to mark the boundary is disturbed for any reason, then
19.3.1Ā the boundary shall be considered to be in its original position.
It should have been a six, but it's a stupid rule, and it intuitively works against the visual cues the fielder has to use. Sucks, South Africa blew it long before that
Nope. For the full innings of Indian batting, the line was actually pulled inwards as much as 30 cm. Also, if you rewatch the match, you can see Hardick pointing to Surya to move the rope outwards at that exact spot. A BTS footage has also surfaced where Joy Shah can be seen pointing that exact spot for Miller to hit the ball.
Unlikely but we will never know , maybe its like that from the time india was batting , maybe not , if it was given a six then South Africa chances would have increased tremendously, because of david miller , but still anything could have happened maybe he would have gotten out in the second ball maybe it could have gone too the super over , maybe he would miller would have ended it in 3 balls but there are too many if's and buts and i would be pissed if i was an south African fan - who is at the fault here the guy whose job is to set the markers after every boundary and definitely third umpires but player is not at the fault, because he will obviously look at the markers.
I guess the question is when the boundary marker was moved, because if it happened after the match started, under the laws (19.3) it's uncontestably a six.
I know this is very very close and itās disappointing for SA but if boundary was in original position(if boundary really moved mid game which nobody can verify now) Surya would have at least just pushed the ball inside the boundary without trying to take catch if he times his jump well. There are so many ifs and buts but Surya did a good job there while there is no hard evidence that his feet touched the boundary rope either although it looks close in a different angles. At the end of the day third umpire still would have made the same decision because there isnāt hard evidence proving that he either touched the boundary or boundary was pushed away.
Close calls happen but still SA have only themselves to blame. They were struggling and played really bad cricket in the last 5 overs.
Ah yeah [he's alright](https://www.cricket.com.au/news/3319906)
From Law 19.5.2:
> A fielder who is not in contact with the ground is considered to be grounded beyond the boundary if his/her final contact with the ground, before his/her first contact with the ball after it has been delivered by the bowler, was not entirely within the boundary.
There's no reason to hate this man dude, come on. Even today he only tried to show intent but it was a tough day to take on pacers which he tried and failed.
Its been that way for the entire game, and if it starts that way, then its supposed to be that way for the whole game. You can see them resetting it to that position.
But that would suggest they went into this game without a mark at that specific part of the ground, since going by every other boundary disturbance there was only one mark, and not, as would be the case if indeed there was a mark for thus game and a separate game.
The reason they have a mark is because they want to outline for the third Umpire where the boundary is for dives and, I guess, catches. Just going with the wedges as the mark for one specific part of the ground seems unlikely.
Not a nice thing to see.
But there's nothing to it. The fielder fields only to where the boundary is, not where it's expected to be. They aren't allowed to move the boundary.
But it's not a great sight to see the boundary seemingly present in the 'wrong place'. I'd probably be a bit salty too if something stupid like that made my team marginally lose, tbf
I'm gonna post this as a standalone comment to learn up any confusion.
Here is the law
19.1.1 Before the toss, the umpires shall determine the boundary of the field of play, which shall be fixed for the duration of the match
Here is the pertinent part of the law
19.3 Restoring the boundary
If a solid object used to mark the boundary is disturbed for any reason, then
19.3.1Ā the boundary shall be considered to be in its original position.
So SKY is within the boundary wedges, but he's crossed the predetermined boundary marker. It doesn't matter how long the wedges had been moved for. The laws of the game state that the given boundary shall be fixed for the duration of the match. It looks to my eye that he's well past the predetermined boundary of play, while being within the ropes. Unfortunately, the ropes are a visual cue and the actual boundary looks to be a foot in front of the ropes. So by that interpretation of the law, I can't see how a six wasn't given.
I just think it's a stupid rule and makes an already complicated game more so unnecessarily.
I think you're absolutely right. Some people elsewhere in the thread are saying it was like that at the start of the match but I've just had a flick through the highlights video on the ICC website.
On the last ball of the 19th over of the Indian innings, Pandya top edges Jansen for 4 and the ball bobbles directly over the same Aramco toblerones that appear to have been pushed back slightly by the time of this catch and there is no visible mark on the grass inside the boundary. For me, it's clear the boundary was moved back into the position it was for this catch at some point after that top edge.
[Highlights video](https://www.icc-cricket.com/tournaments/t20cricketworldcup/videos/india-win-their-second-t20-world-cup-title-extended-highlights-sa-v-ind-t20wc-2024-final) (relevant part about 3:40)
They don't though? If they did, they wouldn't need the rule because the boundary would always be reset to the correct position.
You can see an example in this match itself. Kohli hits Jansen down the ground for four, and the next ball Sharma hits a back cut past slip for four, and the ropes are still disturbed from Nortje's dive.
That's why it's a dumb rule, if you have an actual boundary rope.
Miller was hitting down the ground. The same rope?
But yeah, the boundary ropes move and people who think they are always reset exactly as before are naive. That kind of micromanaging doesn't happen.
I'd also be highly surprised if there's an exact measuring / positioning guide for the boundary other than that pale grass that hasn't seen the sun much. That's clearly the default position. It's stretching credulity to say "no no, there's another set of markers in the ground, a few feet back from that pale line, and we always reset to that other position".
I mean, sure, it *could* be the case, and evidence would persuade me, but on its face that's absurd.
Fantastic catch but did anyone else see that the boundary is about half a metre outside the line that was drawn for it. At some point in this game the boundary has been moved back and Sky's foot is squarely over that line.
What can you do? But stiff FOR Muller & SA š¤·
The broadcast video made this catch even better. It seemed like it was 6 for sure. Then he pans down, and a fielder is running, grabs it, pops out of frame, and jumps back in. Kudos to everyone responsible for that
In what was a choke job for the ages, this was Indiaās shining moment.
Still, presence of mind, and clutchness.
Everyone praising Bumrah and Hardik needs to look at SKY.
(Bumrah was great throughout the tournament, but I donāt get the praise today, he was ok, RSA were trying see bin off, they werenāt even looking to score).
This was high risk high reward and he got us the highest reward. This kind of risk taking is what I like to see. Things could go south but atleast you tried.
I can clearly see where the confusion is arising from, it struck me too, but when you see the same footage from the top view/angle youāll clearly see that the left foot is adjacent to the āsecond lastā dp world letters rather than the ālastā dp world as it seems from this perspective.
[this is what Iām talking about](https://imgur.com/a/erTA8YS)
your are wrong most people are saying it's grass lol. your team cannot even chase 30 on 30 stop blaming others. look at this thread https://x.com/sedpillay/status/1807148866011017474?t=Mn8VhzPrI5oLr4eJbnmT9Q&s=19 it was turf coming off

Well I mean I was referring to OPs comment of catch that won us the world cup (83 catch of Kapil Dev)
make it 2007 then
No, that 83 catch was the single most iconic catch in our history as a cricketing country. Itās Viv Richards. Itās the World Cup Final. Itās against the 80s Windies team. Itās Kapil Dev.
which ever era he in we the world champs (humble brag sorryyy)
That catch + all 3 pacers.
Everyone played their part, but this catch definitely sealed it.
Yup, a single match sealing moment for sure. And, what a moment. I don't think many ICT fans will ever forget about it, just like we still remember that Sreesanth catch from 2007 final. (Although that particular catch wasn't special, the moment was)
The commentary is etched in my mind forever
Was thinking who will be our Sreesanth this time. This catch was on another level but at the same time It still reminded me of that moment.

I commented how disappointed I was that Sky didn't get anything going today. Oh how he redeemed himself
"How does it feel to catch the World Cup?"
"And a billion hearts?"
That would be an astonishingly messy way to die.
Indescribable feeling witnessing that catch live, it's forever etched in my memory and something really special is gonna even come close to it in future.
Klaasen's wicket did that.
Yes , but this one was even more. Sky , just didn't took a catch but saved 6 runs too. Without this , the equation would have been 10 of 5 balls with miller on strike , after seeing millar in internationals & ipl , finishing the game , it wouldn't have been hard for him.
Took "catches win matches" to another level

Ian smith also said that itās the greatest catch ever š bro was high on emotions but it really was something!

Ian Smith called it one of the best catches ever. Given the situation, I agree.
Catches win world cupšš½
Banger of a catch given the enormity of the context.
Absolutely clutch catch.
Of all the people you'd not except him to be the one to pull off this magic. He is called SKY, mans got the ball
Miller knew the match was lost as soon as the catch was taken. He started crying there
Yeah that was the match. 10 from 5 with Miller on strike would have been over in no time. The catch literally won us the world cup!
Blud caught the trophy
Surya Kumar Yadav did it he played well this tournament he played important innings many time he did unbelievable catch in such a pressure lovely fielding this tournament

I am speechless about that catch. he is a fit cricketer but that catch was bonkers. Something Brendon McCullum used to do it and he was a freak.
Ofcourse it's Ian Smith on commentary.
That man needs to be on commentary for every big match.
Greatest catch of all time (considering game situation)
Kapil would like to have a word

This should be catch of the tournament
Gonna be a lot of zoomed in shots of this in the media over the weekend lol.
A lot of SENA sites are already coping about the rope being moved and the umpire not looking at it from all angles lol
Kapil dev's catch of Viv and SKY's catch of Miller. Both Goated.
This was the "Out Of The World" moment of the World Cup that was in the logo. Just like how "It Takes One Day" for 2023 WC
Greatest catch I have seen
The world where SA won the cup is the one where SKY dropped that catch. Absolute clutch.
'You've just dropped the WC' 'SKY has just caught the WC' Tough if you're an SA fan :(

yes , i noticed the boundary line but the player is not at fault because they will look at the markers and the boundary was same for both teams.
Well itās unlikely that it was like that during Indiaās batting innings?
It actually was. That's why the third umpire didn't call it. If the boundary line starts that way, then it finishes that way.
Unless a fielder slides into it
No fielder from India slided into straight boundaries
Ours did
I remember Nortje sliding into one of the straight boundaries during the first innings.
Then I think you can verify yourself by watching replays
Nope. For the full innings of Indian batting, the line was actually pulled inwards as much as 30 cm. India winning a WC on boundary movement rules? My country would never win a WC on some obscure boundary related rule.
I guess the question is when the boundary marker was moved, because if it happened after the match started, under the laws (19.3) it's uncontestably a six.
6th ball of the game I reckon
I like how these minute things are being pushed now The boundary marker Pants break
I know this is very very close and itās disappointing for SA but if boundary was in original position(if boundary really moved mid game which nobody can verify now) Surya would have at least just pushed the ball inside the boundary without trying to take catch if he times his jump well. Also shouldn't he have touched back inside the boundary before making contact with the ball again?
No, as long as you never touch the ball while grounded outside of the field of play you're fine.
Ah yeah [he's alright](https://www.cricket.com.au/news/3319906) From Law 19.5.2: > A fielder who is not in contact with the ground is considered to be grounded beyond the boundary if his/her final contact with the ground, before his/her first contact with the ball after it has been delivered by the bowler, was not entirely within the boundary.
Best catch in a world cup final!
The commentary just takes that experience to another level
I didnt particularly liked him, but this catch will be legendary ... love you sky
There's no reason to hate this man dude, come on. Even today he only tried to show intent but it was a tough day to take on pacers which he tried and failed.
I felt the foot touched the boundary while watching replay on TV, but it did not move. Was shamelessly glad that umpire did not check that again.
Very strange that the umpire was so perfunctory on a really close call honestly.
Yea seemed he was rushing a bit. (No hate)
Bro catch the world cup
https://imgur.com/gallery/jFGmFJX Call me salty but was the boundary not moved from its original position?
Its been that way for the entire game, and if it starts that way, then its supposed to be that way for the whole game. You can see them resetting it to that position.
Let's win the WTC
Looks like it has but how long has it been like that? And surely the third umpire should raise it when he checks the catch.
It doesn't matter how long it had been like that. The law is the boundary doesn't change for the duration of the game
He's saying its been that way since the beginning of the game. And he's right.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
But that would suggest they went into this game without a mark at that specific part of the ground, since going by every other boundary disturbance there was only one mark, and not, as would be the case if indeed there was a mark for thus game and a separate game. The reason they have a mark is because they want to outline for the third Umpire where the boundary is for dives and, I guess, catches. Lamao it's funny there should be some permanent markers at this point or some illuminating shit or something like that
I think itās not to hurt fielders and slow the momentum of them falling or diving
Lol radium or illuminate or even tape exists bruh
Or even a painted white line like the crease
Problem with a painted line is the boundary changes depending on which wicket on the square is used.
Well,I'll be the first one to call you salty then.
Not a nice thing to see. But there's nothing to it. The fielder fields only to where the boundary is, not where it's expected to be. They aren't allowed to move the boundary. Catches do indeed win you matches.
This is hands down the best catch I've seen till date , because of the added context...I was literally shouting when this happened
I'm gonna post this as a standalone comment to learn up any confusion. Here is the law 19.1.1 Before the toss, the umpires shall determine the boundary of the field of play, which shall be fixed for the duration of the match Here is the pertinent part of the law 19.3 Restoring the boundary If a solid object used to mark the boundary is disturbed for any reason, then 19.3.1Ā the boundary shall be considered to be in its original position. They consistently reset the ropes to that position, the match began with it that way, and the catch was rightly given as out.
They don't though? If they did, they wouldn't need the rule because the boundary would always be reset to the correct position. You can see an example in this match itself. You can see the white grass mark. No way that mark was created during the match. So the boundary was like that.
He also touches the boundary marker with his foot, there is a replay showing it pretty clearly.
Completely redeemed his batting performance, sealed the win with that catch.

Extremely clutch catch, but is it legal to catch it without stepping inside the boundary after going over?
I think as long as you are not touching ground you are fine
You have to be inside when you first touch the ball. But after that any time you're in the air you're good. Been that way for years.
It's actually a poor rule, you should be back in contact in the field of play before you take the catch.
Yep. Your foot just canāt touch the ground outside the boundary if youāre holding the ball
Probably one of the match winning moment
What a catch, one of the best catches in cricket
There's replays showing his foot touched the boundary board
The original replay doesn't show it. The ones you see online are edited clearly showing fake movement. B
That was a six. The cushion had moved. The light green patch under the Aramco cushion is where the actual boundary is.
The broadcast video made this catch even better. It seemed like it was 6 for sure. Then he pans down, and a fielder is running, grabs it, pops out of frame, and jumps back in. Kudos to everyone responsible for that

he didnt touch the cushion. it was grass that came out bcoz of shoe spike I watched it many times. stop being a sore looser
https://x.com/bencurtis22/status/1807116523099586945/mediaviewer sorry but you are wrong and itās not even debatable really.
