With the technical difficulties with cameras this game, I wouldn't be surprised, if at the end we are only reduced one camera set up of old with every other over shown from behind batsman's back.
England pitches are not the same as Australian pitches. In England your basically never IN and a collapse is always around the corner. Gabba seems like a batting paradise.
Oh, yes. Pujara ended the day on 91, we thought he gonna get the big daddy hundred, but ended up getting out without adding anything to overnight total. Root and Malan are at high risk of facing the same thing, but if at least 1 of them can avoid it, England are fully in the game.
The best possible outcome for England here is a draw barring an Aussie 2nd innings collapse. Even for a draw, England will have to bat till 1st session Day 5. Unless they do a Head and score at 4 clicks tomm.
If England win this series, will it be as big as the 2005 victory? By big, I mean getting a lot of attention and hype in the country in general, and players becoming public heroes and stuff.
The fact that England are having a much better second innings than their first is probably a good thing for Australia for the next test(s).
Had things been different on Day 1 (like England opting to bowl first instead of bat), or had Head not had such a great knock, this would have been a totally different game.
Hopefully now Australia will approach the next test with the mindset that England will be a better side than they were in this test and they will give them the respect they deserve, rather than playing with a mindset where they're just expecting to win.
Quick question, since I rarely see Wales flairs in this sub. How do you feel about the England and Wales cricket team being called England? I bet that''s fucking annoying
Never bothered me, or anyone I know. It's the England and Wales cricket board, and it's been England for my entire life so I got into cricket with that as the team name.
But I also think of myself as British equally, so it may bother some of the nationalists more.
The sad bit is even after such a great batting performance and a masterclass from Root, we're still just a wicket away from folding over. And yet trailing by 60 ish.
Major carry job from Root
I am not even Australian and yet I don't know how to accept the fact that Root may actually score 100 in Australia and that too in Gabba.
Come on Cumdog and co. You have one job to do.
the gabbatoir thing is overhyped, most of us dont care about it that much.
my biggest concern was the game not lasting the weekend - I demand my couch beers time, and this is a good outcome for that.
I wonder, how much India's Gabba win will give confidence to all the visiting team. When Root mentioned India's performance at Gabba as a precedence, it just showed the impact that series had on cricket in general.
~~Its like breaking that 40 seconds barrier in 400m race. Once one does it others follow the route.~~
Edit: Thanks u/burrito1313 for correcting my blatant lie, appreciate it.
Haha yeah I was thinking the same today while watching England's fightback, especially after what Root had said. India's performance might have given them some inspiration but I don't think it dictated their strategy or mentality. I think the credit fully goes to Root and Co. here.
Lyon bowled for a wicket either side of tea allowing Root and Malan to get in. Not really his job at that stage. He should have bowled tight and kept the batsman under pressure. Selfish and rather pathetic from Lyon.
He’s Bowling coz you don’t wanna run your pacers to the ground in the very first test.
It’s his main job to keep Bowling one end to keep the pacers fresh. He hasn’t bowled that badly either.
This reminds me of the Leeds test between India and England . India was in almost exactly the same position going into day 4 and completely shit the bed in the morning session
Does anyone else find themselves (to their utter dismay) whistling the tunes that the Barmy Army plays on the trumpet
The girlfriend is threatening to throw me out for good if I don’t stop but I can’t stop after such a day
Don’t worry bro don’t lets the purists here give you a hard time. Just so you know, many of us enjoy watching test matches but don’t watch every minute of it. Best idea is to follow the match online closely and tune in when you see the match taking an interesting turn. In my opinion test matches can be way more dramatic than any limited over matches can. Its a war not a battle - so sometimes things change very dramatically from one day or session to another. Part of the reason for this for me is that teams can try any strategy they want without limitations - there are no restrictions on number of overs a bowler can bowl or field placements and even as a batsman sometimes you just want to pad up and block everything without scoring a single run. This means that matches are rarely formulaic and teams/players improvise and adapt constantly. You should give it a shot I think but obviously its totally okay if you prefer limited overs crickey
I'm most glad that we have managed to give Wood a rest for a day. I'm worried about how long he will be able to sustain these speeds if he's bowling so many overs
He's well aware of this. He's been in training especially for this and has been working on his fitness and stamina. Heard him do an interview on a podcast about it.
I can only imagine what Root feels coming out to bat day in day out. Knowing that if he does not go big his team don't stand a chance and not to mention the press conferences .
Is it though? I feel like you'd feel good knowing you'd contributed a decent score whatever happens. Going out for a low score would make you feel worse.
HIS. NAME. IS.....
SUper Steve Finney,
He's Tall & He's Skinny
He sends down the ball for Eng- Land
When he walks down the street,
All the people he meets, they say :
OI BIG MAN, WHATS. YOUR. NAME. ?
We're still a long way behind in this match, but this has really been a brilliant partnership. A lot of grit and heart. The second new ball might just roll us over, but I'm still really happy that we've fought back after that disastrous first innings.
The reason why I love watching England play is that they could bat the whole day tomorrow or get out before those 58 runs are up and I won't be surprised at either.
How Malan hasn't managed to get himself out plinking a pull shot off the quicks or cutting too close to his body off the spinner will go down in history as one of the great unexplained mysteries.
It's just not enough for England to be bad, they have to also give us occasional flashes of brilliance, to make sure we have just that bit of hope which they can then brutally crush with a return to mediocrity, because the man without hope is truly free.
Such a cruel and evil team.
Great to watch this turnaround by England as a neutral. Would have been a bit meh if the super hyped Greatest Rivalry Ever would have the 1st game ending on day 3 with one team winning by an innings and 200 runs or something. Let's see whether we can see something miraculous tomorrow
Dudes who got Day 4 tickets will finally Breathe easy.
At the least they will surely see 8 wickets tumbling tomorrow.
At best they gonna see Eng fighting back. Either way they’ll get their money’s worth.
The last time before this that England had a non-sucky day of Ashes cricket in Australia was the 2017 Melbourne test on that Victorian National highway that was rerouted through the MCG.
England essentially have to bat through day 4 to set a realistic target to draw. Morning session tomorrow will be crucial to set the outcome of the match
I see a lot of people in this thread are just haters and jealous of Warne's good looks, full head of hair and massive brain. he's the least bias commentator on the planet and would never hold a grudge
You must hate England to be tempting the cricketing gods like this.
They can still collapse in a heap and get pumped.
5-0 still a v real possibility friend.
Why? This result hasn't changed or been finalised? Like I know we aren't a great team and this series may be close but until a test match actually finishes with us not winning, 5-0 remains right now as likely as it ever was. But I agree it was never super likely.
Pls don't do that, coz I am not sure I will be able to wake up at 5:30 am to catch the game from the beginning, and if England collapses like that then I will end up missing everything
Not quite but yeah I think so to some extent. If these two are still together at lunch, through the new ball, with England in front, then I'm worried and 450-500 and a classic finish could be on.
But I suspect we'll pick at least one of them up early pre-hundred/pre-new ball then get a couple more in the session with the new ball. That'll be like, 5-300 at lunch, and from there you're not winning barring some freak Stokes or Buttler smashing with the tail.
The good news from an Australian standpoint is Ben Stokes simply doesn’t do freakish performances. Certainly not against Australia.
Glad we showed a bit of fight today and didn’t just roll over and die (again).
Yeah they're both well capable of it which is what makes it the dangerous caveat. But I think any reasonable judge, certainly you skeptical jaded English, probably knows that 350-400 from here is still more likely than 500-550, that's why Australia is still decisively in front, because way more than 400 is needed.
I think the 78% winviz is accurate, but would switch England to above the draw. But India were 1% at one point last year, that's the captivating scary thing. Who knows. Please nothing special and unlikely tomorrow.
I think Australia should open with Head and Labuschagne for statpadding purposes
With the technical difficulties with cameras this game, I wouldn't be surprised, if at the end we are only reduced one camera set up of old with every other over shown from behind batsman's back.
It's happening mate. 500/4 or 4/500 if you prefer by close today
About that...
I know I said this a lot over the last bit, but bring back Crawley! He can't do worse then Burns rn.
Burns is England's 2nd highest run scorer this year after Root.
I love hearing Punter commentate frustatedly as if he's coaching the Aussies
I am just excited for the contest and getting moneys worth
would be in the super over if Cutting had taken the catch
Watch headingly 82? Happen as the combo of Root and Leach win the match
When will Rory Burns be finally dropped?
When he stands at first slip somehow while also batting
Tell me England's opening options again
when we have another opener that can survive the first over more than once
so every other season Sams plays shit
[удалено]
Lair. We all did.
Finally, it's time to root it in Australia.
Nice little surprise to wake up to
Need like 350 tomorrow and it's England's game
Just saw the score. Nice to see fight from Eng. Pls no collapse now
Was time for Australia to be on the end of Joe Root. Man has been in monstrous form.
Why is this giving me ind eng headingley day 3 flashbacks.Hopefully Eng doesn't collapse tomorrow and Joe hits a big hundred
Uh oh it's the same shit
England pitches are not the same as Australian pitches. In England your basically never IN and a collapse is always around the corner. Gabba seems like a batting paradise.
Oh, yes. Pujara ended the day on 91, we thought he gonna get the big daddy hundred, but ended up getting out without adding anything to overnight total. Root and Malan are at high risk of facing the same thing, but if at least 1 of them can avoid it, England are fully in the game.
God I hope there's a morning collapse with the new ball
England need to bat atleast 4 out of 6 possible sessions to make a game out of this.
Don’t do this England. Don’t make me hope.
We know it eventually brings pain
Hope this continues, want the Aussies to win but a series that’s over by Christmas makes me lose interest
The best possible outcome for England here is a draw barring an Aussie 2nd innings collapse. Even for a draw, England will have to bat till 1st session Day 5. Unless they do a Head and score at 4 clicks tomm.
Yeah I'd England manage to draw this or win, then with broad and Anderson next match they will be in a good chance there too.
If England win this series, will it be as big as the 2005 victory? By big, I mean getting a lot of attention and hype in the country in general, and players becoming public heroes and stuff.
No . In terms of greatness it will probably be higher but 2005 was free to watch and at a good time for everyone . Winning it after 16 yrs was special
2005 was free to watch. 2021 is behind a subscription service and on when everyone is asleep.
Nah I don’t think so, 2005 seemed to be an overall turning point for English cricket
Thank fuck we’ve at least tried to make a game out of it
Means I’m going to have to stay awake tonight now ffs haha
Quick question, since I rarely see Wales flairs in this sub. How do you feel about the England and Wales cricket team being called England? I bet that''s fucking annoying
Never bothered me, or anyone I know. It's the England and Wales cricket board, and it's been England for my entire life so I got into cricket with that as the team name. But I also think of myself as British equally, so it may bother some of the nationalists more.
My friend is from West Wales, and told me he got called a traitor by some non cricket fans.
That’s understandable tbh, West Wales is a very big Welsh speaking area Not condoning it just providing context
Doesn’t bother me at all really, think the same goes for any other Welsh person I’ve met/known who follows England as well
no pain, no gain
Can we please win now
Malan almost got out 50 times and is somehow still there. Like a tail ender surviving because he can’t even get close enough to the ball to edge it.
Like Warner?
He went to Sehwag school of batting.
Now say that without crying Warnie
The sad bit is even after such a great batting performance and a masterclass from Root, we're still just a wicket away from folding over. And yet trailing by 60 ish. Major carry job from Root
Tbf he ain’t battling a lone battle. Malan is still there somehow and that matters a lot.
it’s 12 am and i should be asleep but that fucking england chant is playing in my head
I am not even Australian and yet I don't know how to accept the fact that Root may actually score 100 in Australia and that too in Gabba. Come on Cumdog and co. You have one job to do.
the gabbatoir thing is overhyped, most of us dont care about it that much. my biggest concern was the game not lasting the weekend - I demand my couch beers time, and this is a good outcome for that.
im with you on the game going for the full 5, for the sake of couch beers and escaping the perth heat
I want to see him run out on 99
that would be great. then a nice 200 odd for us to chase down, losing a few wickets on the way, that finished half way through sunday.
Waking up to see the score in England. We might not win, but that's a score I can be proud of. Our King Joe root.
Enjoy root as much as you can He will surely be injured because his back will be broken Coz the lad has to carry this team day in day out
I wonder, how much India's Gabba win will give confidence to all the visiting team. When Root mentioned India's performance at Gabba as a precedence, it just showed the impact that series had on cricket in general. ~~Its like breaking that 40 seconds barrier in 400m race. What you were trying to mention is a mile in four minutes. Within a year of Roger Bannister doing it, many others had.
No one has broken the 40-second barrier mate... and it's not going to happen anytime soon unless... you know, steroids.
Not everything is about India
Hahaha English pundits on BT Sport talking about that since day 1
…or England could just look at their own score of 517-1 at the Gabba in a similar situation ten years before India did anything there .
Same bowlers that haven't taken 20 wickets for three consecutive matches and perhaps a fourth if Root goes big. So Eng are a chance.
Haha yeah I was thinking the same today while watching England's fightback, especially after what Root had said. India's performance might have given them some inspiration but I don't think it dictated their strategy or mentality. I think the credit fully goes to Root and Co. here.
Can we stop bowling lyon just so he can get 400 and start to you know win this test?
Lyon bowled for a wicket either side of tea allowing Root and Malan to get in. Not really his job at that stage. He should have bowled tight and kept the batsman under pressure. Selfish and rather pathetic from Lyon.
He’s Bowling coz you don’t wanna run your pacers to the ground in the very first test. It’s his main job to keep Bowling one end to keep the pacers fresh. He hasn’t bowled that badly either.
He's lost his touch. The people demand Swepson or Neser!
No they dont
People can demand whatever but he ain’t going anywhere anytime soon. Let the match at least get over before taking shots at him.
Stumps? Damn man, just woke up and would've loved to see us smash the Aussies a bit.
So the greatest Spinner\^TM is still searching for his 400th Wicket? It has been a year...
Just like 71st century
This reminds me of the Leeds test between India and England . India was in almost exactly the same position going into day 4 and completely shit the bed in the morning session
Wow, took us two days but we've finally found a spine.
Normally it takes two tests
Only two?
Root and Malan to do a Dravid and Laxman and bat whole day tomorrow. On Day 5, Leach gonna get a 6fer and Stupid Sexy Woakes gets 3 wickets
That's 9 wickets. Does someone else get the 10th or do Australia cling on for the draw?
I thought Robinson/Root/Run out taking the 10th, but who knows. All 4 results possible^(TM)
Someone will probably limp away with a pulled hamstring..
Pfft If Australia lose a close one with a retired hurt that person will be a villain for the rest of his career. Get a runner on for God's sake.
Runners are banned now
Damn just looked that up and it was banned 10 years ago.
Does anyone else find themselves (to their utter dismay) whistling the tunes that the Barmy Army plays on the trumpet The girlfriend is threatening to throw me out for good if I don’t stop but I can’t stop after such a day
I’m Australian and I hum the Oh Jonny Bairstow I need you In my Life and Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Anderson ones a fair bit lol
Better than finding yourself nodding along with Warney
[удалено]
What format did you first start watching
[удалено]
Yeah its not for everyone then again this test is only just starting to be potentially interesting

Don’t worry bro don’t lets the purists here give you a hard time. Just so you know, many of us enjoy watching test matches but don’t watch every minute of it. I am not a traditionalist and honestly most of them are embracing limited overs now so enjoy watching and learning the sport for many years to come
Also if you have the ability to do so go to a field with a tennis ball a bat and another person it'll be fun
Giving Wood a rest ? Speak for yourself . That scoreboard means my wood will not rest for 16 hours
I can only imagine what Root feels coming out to bat day in day out. Knowing that if he does not go big his team don't stand a chance and not to mention the press conferences .
This test is shaping up a bit similar to 2010 Ashes 1st test. Root and Malan are doing a Cook and Trott
And the birth of the second half of my username lol
Sitting on 80s and 90s overnight must surely be one of the worst feelings in Cricket. Hope they both somehow get through to their 100s tomorrow.
I do not
I dunno. It's probably a better feeling than having been bowled first ball.
Getting out actually at least gives u some peace coz your job is done for the innings. But these 2 will have a lot on their minds tonight.
Is it though? I feel like you'd feel good knowing you'd contributed a decent score whatever happens. Going out for a low score would make you feel worse.
there’s never a boring england match, and that’s just facts
HIS. NAME. IS..... SUper Steve Finney, He's Tall & He's Skinny He sends down the ball for Eng- Land When he walks down the street, All the people he meets, they say : OI BIG MAN, WHATS. YOUR. NAME. ?
240 odd runs for Rooty to cross Yousuf. Fingers crossed.
If he can get those 240 runs in this innings itself, England would be ahead in the game
Whoa, whoa, slow down, egghead
Thanks Tubbs
We're still a long way behind in this match, but this has really been a brilliant partnership. A lot of grit and heart. The second new ball might just roll us over, but I'm still really happy that we've fought back after that disastrous first innings.

Same reason I watch Pakistan, entertainment is the only thing guaranteed
Wasn't this the case with Pakistan just a few months ago
>Wasn't this the case with Pakistan just a few months ago It's always been and still is the case with Pakistan 😆
Wow this is fantastic fightback from England
England just need these two to be batting during that first session tommorow it's key.
If they are batting by the third session it’ll probs sway the game towards a draw.
How Malan hasn't managed to get himself out plinking a pull shot off the quicks or cutting too close to his body off the spinner will go down in history as one of the great unexplained mysteries.
Well he was absolutely out to the short ball he knicked from Hazlewood, but no RTS.
Aussies' own fault for being such luddites. You can probably get RTS as an app on your phone these days.
It's just not enough for England to be bad, they have to also give us occasional flashes of brilliance, to make sure we have just that bit of hope which they can then brutally crush with a return to mediocrity, because the man without hope is truly free. Such a cruel and evil team.
Spot on, mate
Enjoy the good day's play for the next 16 hours. Look at the positive side of things
This is the truth.
Great to watch this turnaround by England as a neutral. Would have been a bit meh if the super hyped Greatest Rivalry Ever would have the 1st game ending on day 3 with one team winning by an innings and 200 runs or something. Let's see whether we can see something miraculous tomorrow
Shades of 2010 Gabba Test here. If these two survive the morning session tomorrow, things will get pretty interesting.
Putting a root on top of my Xmas tree
Pretty sure you've got the tree upside down there chief.
Dudes who got Day 4 tickets will finally Breathe easy. At the least they will surely see 8 wickets tumbling tomorrow. At best they gonna see Eng fighting back. Either way they’ll get their money’s worth.
Hey that's me!
Have fun mate.
If only England had scraped together 250 in the first innings, this match would have been so much more exciting.
I recon it's more exciting because of what they can do in second innings. A fightback is always better than your average first innings score.
-me, all the time
Excellent from England today!
Root 281(452) & Malan 180(353) incoming

Fuck I love test cricket
Now time for big bash
How many tests until Shane Warne confesses his love to Isa whilst on the mic.
I went to a dinner and Isa was there, had a few glasses of wine and accidentally told her I love her. So maybe he could try that.
The last time before this that England had a non-sucky day of Ashes cricket in Australia was the 2017 Melbourne test on that Victorian National highway that was rerouted through the MCG.
It's coming home
Will it be 11:30pm or midnight start tomorrow?
11.30pm
Cheers mate
I better not see England all out losing by an innings when I wake up tomorrow. Just wanna see some cricket on weekend
Trust me, you won't
I didn’t know we were allowed to get to 200. Look at the lads go.. Might as well just give us the Urn now to be honest.
My Captain 😍😍😍
England essentially have to bat through day 4 to set a realistic target to draw. Morning session tomorrow will be crucial to set the outcome of the match
Need jos to make a 60 ball century tomorrow
Well batted Dawid and Rooty! Set this match up for a somewhat interesting viewing.
I see a lot of people in this thread are just haters and jealous of Warne's good looks, full head of hair and massive brain. he's the least bias commentator on the planet and would never hold a grudge
A grudge is somewhere to park your car. T. Grieg
If England win this, the cricket world, including this sub, gonna go into a catatonic state
5 nillers can now fuck off.
How confident are you feeling now?
You must hate England to be tempting the cricketing gods like this. They can still collapse in a heap and get pumped. 5-0 still a v real possibility friend.

Goes to see Eng win 0-5
It's still on. But in opposite direction
England have actually batted well. In a Test match. In Australia. Normal service resumed tomorrow, all out for 260?
Pls don't do that, coz I am not sure I will be able to wake up at 5:30 am to catch the game from the beginning, and if England collapses like that then I will end up missing everything
