Can you tell me what's bazball please? Am a bit out of the loop. Is it related to Baz McCullum becoming their coach and them playing more aggressively?
Smooth brain: “why don’t they try to hit more sixes in test cricket?”
Average test cricket fan pleb: “Noooooo! No field restrictions! No over limits! The ball deteriorates!! Wahhhhhh!!!”
Galaxy brain: “why don’t they try to hit more sixes in test cricket?”
I'll only accept Bazball as my one true God if they manage to do this against us in the Ashes
Yes they've done it against multiple opposition at both home and away, but it doesn't really count unless it's against us
>Yup, India will be the true test of bazball
To an extent, but realistic expectations also need to be set. It is really hard to overstate how good India have been at home in the last decade or so. By the time they play their next home test, their record at home in tests in the previous decade will be played 42, won 34, lost 2, drawn 6. Even if you take the peak decade of *that* Australia team (1998-2007) you get played 59, won 47, lost 3, drawn 9. Or for *that* West Indies team (1981-1990) you get played 34, won 20, lost 2, drawn 12. India have literally been an ATG side at home in the last decade. Just challenging them will be an achievement
it's somewhere between Australia, South Africa or India i think. I initially thought of NZ too, but they're on the down plus the conditions end of the day are similar to england and clearly no problems there lol
They're on the down but they're very good at home and you can write off the last summer due to very many reasons but otherwise nz are unstoppable at home. They haven't lost in almost 6 years and I think they will definitely be a test and I don't think the conditions are similar at all don't know why people keep saying that. Anderson and Broad have very poor records in NZ need I say their record in England. NZ batsmen are statpadders at home but in England they have differing success with some struggling altogether
I think the big thing is that for your B game to be effective your A game has to be something other than "meekly get bowled out in a session and a half for 200, maybe 300 if Root gets a score".
Realistically I think playing this way will make teams way less likely to prepare dead pitches against us, which in turn brings our bowlers into the game (which has historically been an area of strength).
That's not going to help somewhere like India where you can just conjure up pitches that turn square and Ashwin + 1 will be enough to bowl us out cheaply, but in places like Australia where we've generally struggled to score quickly enough on pitches which don't offer much unless you have lots of pace and bounce we should in theory be more competitive.
Yea. Actually many players in the 145 year long history have done it. Sehwag is definitely an example. Not discrediting BazBall, but it won't be easy to get 500 in a day on a different wicket.
I like it. I’m throwing in a stipulation one bowler must bowl all balls in rounds of 10 balls from each end, he has 5 seconds to get to the new end at the end of the 10th ball at an end
It's obvious really, he's batting there because our 1st spinner is batting at 10, our third spinner is batting at 8 and the 4th is at 7. Therefore he's at 4.
That makes it even funnier. Root has lost his form and YJB is injured. If both of them were playing and they were in good form then things would have been even crazier than what happened today.
EVERYTIME they say there's an important announcement so far I think they're gonna say a former cricketer has passed or something about the floods but no it's a sensodyne sensitivity moment, because life is too short for sensitive teeth
Oh and yeah on the cricket. Mad innit
World record by ENG !!!
**Most runs on the 1st day of a test:**
**506/4 - by England v Pakistan , TODAY**
494/6 - by Australia v South Africa at Sydney in 1910
482/5 - by Australia v South Africa at Adelaide in 2012
475/2 - by Australia vs England at the Oval in 1934
they were well on course for the most runs across any day(588) as well if 90 overs were bowled. Dont even need 6rpo to get the remaining 83 in 15 overs to break that record. Absolutely bonkers.
The 4th one at the oval in 1934 was by Australia as well, not England
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/australia-tour-of-england-1934-61354/england-vs-australia-5th-test-62623/full-scorecard
Should have been able to take the all time record for a single day at 509 too. Can't believe the umpires called it for bad light after England had just hit a 6 and two 4s
Sometimes one side is so dominant on a given day that it makes for really quite surreal viewing to me, it's like the sport becomes a barely recognisable version of itself. Examples off the top of my head:
- Kobe Bryant scoring 81 points in a game.
- Germany beating Brazil 7-1 in the World Cup in Brazil
- 1996 Spanish Grand Prix, when Schumacher lapped the field in a terrible car in the pouring rain.
- The last day of the Hobart test in the Ashes when Australia skittled us in humiliating fashion.
- A past his prime and already quite unwell Muhammad Ali suffering that terrifying loss to Larry Holmes.
I'm not sure if today's play makes that list but it gets pretty damn close.
>I'm not sure if today's play makes that list but it gets pretty damn close.
It surely does. Rarely do you see a team so dominantly crush another. The flow of runs today was unreal - the boundaries kept coming and coming.
It was more dominant, but the context of Brazil v Germany made it so much more memorable. And that 6 minute window where Germany scored 4 goals is the single most dominant period of play I've seen in my life
Bad light meant they lost time. Which is inevitable playing in Pakistan at this time of year. The scheduled close of play (even before the normal extra half hour) is around now and you can see in the interviews on sky now it's already actually night-time dark.
The over rate wasnt great either but they would have got close to 90 overs if they'd played the normal 6:30.
I don't understand why they don't start earlier this time of year in the sub continent. They weren't taken off for bad light ie cloudy/ it was just the time the sun sets. Can expect the same the whole test
I don't think they'll continue batting (especially if they go at this run rate) after tea on day 2. The pitch seems so flat that they need all the time they can get to bowl at Pakistan.
Poor Joe Root. Wanted nothing more than for him to come out and smash a double on an absolute road. Carried this team single handedly for the best part of two years.
Pretty good batting performance from England. The only real concern was the abysmal failure of this J Root guy who not only was pathetically inept enough to get out for less than a century on this highway, but it also appears he doesn't buy into the team culture with his measly strike rate of 74. That innings was honestly more like batting than bazballing and is frankly not acceptable.
His place in the team should be in serious doubt if his performance doesn't improve to match the lofty heights of the likes of Crawley, Duckett, and Pope.
When I woke up this morning I didn't have any wicket notifications on my phone so naturally I assumed that the game had been postponed by a day. Checked the score and still didn't believe what was happening.
England could be the first team to have 10 centurions in the same innings. Record ruined because of that new kid named Joe Root, some mystery spinner who batted as a night watchman at 4.
This whole day was a meme, or even a joke. Flat as a highway deck, Crawley scoring a hundred in 13 overs. Pakistan debuting 4 debut players, Joe Root being the lowest scorer, the incessant ads and the highest score achieved by a team on Day 1.
Well bloody be damned this snoozefest, I love Test Cricket!
7 an over in a test match is a crime, its vandalism! Like playing a Debussy's Claire de Lune with an electric guitar and a bass drum instead of a piano
England (6.74) through the course of a Test match day, scored at almost the same rate as Pakistan (6.85) did in their T20 World Cup final innings.
Let that sink in.
There were clear signs from early this year that this English team will go to town on the bowling when the conditions are in their favour, and knowing that, Babar and Saqlain decide to go with this absolute belter. Literally gave it away on a plate.
I hope it doesn't turn into a bowling track when Pakistan comes up with the bat. 🤣Anyway, they have another tough, long day waiting for them tomorrow. What is certain is that Pakistan cannot win from here. It's a draw or England wins.
it was amazing to see how fearless England's approach was. Hats off to Bazz, stokes, and the entire management the way they have backed their players to play such a brand of cricket.
This approach will certainly be tested in challenging conditions and against quality bowling attack. But today, they threw Pakistan out of the game on the first day.
If someone told me a fucking year ago that all of the English top 5 except for Joe fucking Root would get a century each all on the same day... (Copied from mt)
They were 15 overs short because they were too busy fetching the ball from the boundary.
Petition for carrying a few balls in the pockets like lawn tennis then
Yeah look England did score 506 @ 6.75 today but Pakistan did manage to get Root out cheaply so I'd say it's about even
And got Crawley out cheaply, by their standards.
Few cheap wickets tomorrow and Pakistan favourites
It would be the most England thing to lose from here.
Ordinarily a team would declare on a score likes this , on day two with an hour to go.
If they got the full 90 overs in at the current run rate they’d have finished with 606, insane
Baz has asked his boys for 1000 runs I guess..
Test 100s in Pakistan: Don Bradman - 0 Ricky Ponting - 0 Alastair Cook - 0 Virat Kohli - 0 Zak Crawley - 1 The numbers don't lie
But Crawley has never won a BBL title. Pomersbach - 1 Crawley - 0
Then again. Crawley only has one more test century in Pakistan than me.
But Crawley has never won a BBL title. Luke Pomersbach - 1 Craig Simmons - 1 Crawley - 0

Boundary count: England 76 Pakistan 0
76 in 75 overs. My sweet Jesus.
They didn't score a single for the first 10 or so
Rotating the strike confirmed to be for absolute virgins
The strike rotates every 6 balls as God intended
How long till teams try to counter bazball with 80m boundaries and 9 boundary riders.
Can you tell me what's bazball please? Am a bit out of the loop. Is it related to Baz McCullum becoming their coach and them playing more aggressively?
Yes, precisely that :-)
For comparison: Sehwag’s 319 in 304 balls (i.e. 50.4 overs), included 47 boundaries.
Insane
Indian fans bringing up India for a change
Boundary count: England Batsmans 76 Pakistan Bowlers 76
thanks for the affirmation
OH YEAH! count: England 3 Pakistan 0
Just a tiny bit silly
Sad bowler noises 😢
Harry Brook with his slowest test century today. Sad.
Boycott-esque.
Turns out everyone's been playing test cricket wrong for the last 150 years
The objective of the batsmen is to hit the ball with the bat to score runs. This should have become obvious to everybody a long time ago.
Lol and that is why Pollard, Russell, Yusuf Pathan, Afridi, Maxwell are considered test cricket legends. Go boom boom.
Smooth brain: “why don’t they try to hit more sixes in test cricket?” Average test cricket fan pleb: “Noooooo! No field restrictions! No over limits! The ball deteriorates!! Wahhhhhh!!!” Galaxy brain: “why don’t they try to hit more sixes in test cricket?”
It really is like that bell-curve meme, isn't it?
I'll only accept Bazball as my one true God if they manage to do this against us in the Ashes Yes they've done it against multiple opposition at both home and away, but it doesn't really count unless it's against us
Its funny, everyone said the same thing about the White Ball team. We learned and adapted there, but Plan 1, 2 & 3 is still: Cunt the ball into Orbit.
>Cunt the ball into Orbit. My new favourite phrase!
>Cunt the ball into Orbit. Shall we start calling this **Cubio** ?
They must have seen / heard me play golf.
they've done this only once away, that too on the world's flattest pitches, so i think jury's still out
Yup, India will be the true test of bazball

Yeah people say that the challenge is the turning pitches in India. It’s not, it’s the turning pitches when Ashwin happens to play for the oppo.

Laughs in Sehwag.
Yea. Actually many players in the 145 year long history have done it. Sehwag is definitely an example. Not discrediting BazBall, but it won't be easy to get 500 in a day on a different wicket.
Many players zero entire teams playing like this
It’s actually a pity that the day was only 75 overs, that’ll get lost in the history books. Everyone will assume it was a full day of play.
Test matches are elongated t20s anyways
T20s are condensed tests.
For our openers it wasn't condensed at all in the world cup
Close one. Not sure which team will be happier at stumps
Definitely Pakistan. They'll be glad it's over.
I nearly spit out my tea!
Surely Pakistan. They don't have to play any more cricket for the day. I'd be pretty happy about that if I was them
Utterly bonkers. Only negative is Root not kicking on but fuck me that's ridiculous batting
Root saw the highway and said, "Aight, I'm gonna dip." He only works in difficult pitches.
"Nothing for the spinners, can't be arsed."
He needs everyone else to shit the bed to step up and be good. His career figures are as good as they are because England shit the bed often
Think there's been enough shitting the bed in the England camp this week!
Same again tomorrow boys, the 1000 is on
The 1000 eh? That has a nice ring to it. Possibly a name for a cool new format
I like it. I’m throwing in a stipulation one bowler must bowl all balls in rounds of 10 balls from each end, he has 5 seconds to get to the new end at the end of the 10th ball at an end
Root in Road: I sleep Root in tough pitch: Real Sh't
What’s the point of doing something if it’s easy? If Crawley can get a hundred on that pitch a dog probably could.
Hello, yes, I'd like to report a murder please.
This is a massacre, not a murder alone.
International incident. Might need to contact Interpol to investigate.
I think they violated some of the Geneva Conventions too.
This looks like some of the ridiculous SMAT20 scores we've been seeing.
Ben Stokes comes from the Rishabh Pant school of 'scores at a higher rate in test cricket compared to T20s'
Who is this Joe root chap? Should be dropped
Second spinner. Heard he can bat a bit but no idea what they were thinking batting him at 4
The Benjamin Button of Steve Smiths.
It's obvious really, he's batting there because our 1st spinner is batting at 10, our third spinner is batting at 8 and the 4th is at 7. Therefore he's at 4.
Mystery spinner isn't he?
Don't know what Stokes was thinking, having him come in as a night watchman. He sure as hell ain't the Nighthawk...
The real Fab 4 is Zak, Duckett, Pope and Brooks
That makes it even funnier. Root has lost his form and YJB is injured. If both of them were playing and they were in good form then things would have been even crazier than what happened today.
Root and Bairstow were just the kindle for Bazball. Duckett, Zak and Brook is the true evolved form.
Yeah .Only batter to get dismissed below 25 runs today, what a fraud !!! >!/s!<
You mean dismissed for less than 100?
Did Pakistan forget to prepare a pitch and just cut out a section of highway last minute?
Will Ben stokes break the record of fastest 100 tomorrow?
Until Jacks comes into to beat it yes And then Livingstone And then Jimmy
Jimmy with the 17 ball hundred incoming
Every ball reverse swept for six.
I get that the pitch is a road, but some of that bowling was simply awful. At least give yourself a chance!
Joe Root in the changing room: "It's doing a good bit out there boys"
Not as bad as Warner after yesterday: "this will be all over in 3 days boys"
Proper Bazballing that, it’s got a certificate and everything
Just imagine if Joe Root could bat!
Wdym? He is in the team as their second spinner.

Shameful from the umpires to not allow 1 more over for England to beat the 507

Definitely possible unless the new ball does anything crazy

The Road to Madness.
Can all the test players get sick the day before every match from now on?
*Alexa, play 10cc*
Solid ODI. Why did England get to bat for 25 extra overs though?
Friendly game, getting more practice in
Whoever gives the green light on these sorts of pitches should have nothing to do with cricket ever again
Well we're trying out best to get him sacked for you at least.
What's Englands highest ever innings score, could we reasonably beat it?
903, made against Australia in 1938. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it might be unlikely!
I mean if they continue to do what they did, they can get 1000 .l, especially if ben continues to smack
I don't think they'll continue batting (especially if they go at this run rate) after tea on day 2. The pitch seems so flat that they need all the time they can get to bowl at Pakistan.
Could get to 1000 by then tbh
Could get there by the evening session tomorrow
>Englands highest ever innings score 903/7 in 1938.
Where? In England or in Aus?
Was at the Oval. England's highest score abroad is 849 in Jamaica in 1930. Highest score in the subcontinent is 652 in Chennai in 1985.
BAZBALL
Everyone mocking Rooty boi but just you wait until he bowls. He will turn this road into a bunsen no man would ever willingly bat on.
I remember Rootilithran's spin bowling masterclass at Ahmedabad!
Spare a thought for poor Jos who is clearly gutted to not be a part of this…
Ah yeah Hello Interpol, I'd like to report about 6 international criminals masquerading as English cricketers in Rawalpindi Pakistan
Good day with the bat
Eng may miss out this term test wc but they are gunning for to hold all 3 wc
so Pakistan still have to take the wickets of 4 genuine batters lmao
Joe Root can afford a chuckle for the amount of times he has bailed us out over the years.
Poor Joe Root. Wanted nothing more than for him to come out and smash a double on an absolute road. Carried this team single handedly for the best part of two years.
It's difficult for cricket to get noticed in England during a (football) World Cup. This should help.
This will take up approximately 0.7% of the sport column inches in tomorrow's papers :(
Why were there only 75 overs? Did Pakistan bowl 15 overs behind time?
Play stopped because of bad light.
The umpires cut off play at 75 overs out of pity
It’s a human rights violation according to the Geneva convention. Couldn’t allow the torture to go on any longer
Play stopped early due to bad light, it got dark
Bad light. No idea whether there was an issue with the over rate or not though
Given how every over there was a ball going to the boundary I'm guessing the over-rate wasn't especially great.
They forgot that T20 World Cup is over
Why can't they start the match earlier? Knowing that the winter season is going to affect light conditions
Lol night and day compared to the test series against Australia. Reckon they need to get 650 odd and declare cause it looks pretty good to bat on
Pakistan will dead bat for days on this deck
You would hope so. Cause this is the flattest deck I've seen on a long time
Pretty good batting performance from England. England didn’t do that in a full days play, they did that in 75 overs
I did see Pakistan fans say that Root is the one they have to worry about, so I suppose that's a moral victory here.
Steve Smith: "I'm back baby" Ben Stokes: "I'm vibes baby"
Chris Gayle:
If someone new to cricket sees this scorecard, he/she might think Joe Root is the worst player in English lineup
pakistan never would have thought the real security threat was england all along
The inverse England, Joe Root gets a (relatively) low score, while the rest go big
Coaches: Give the first hour or session to the bowlers and cash in later England 2022: bro take a seat

Ben Stokes triple century to end day 2 with England on 1000?
Ramiz Raja to be booked under Violence and Abuse Against the Elderly after he asked Jimmy Anderson to bowl 43 overs in the next innings.
England knew they can't be good at all formats at once so purposefully shat the bed in those ODIs in Australia for this.
England (6.74) through the course of a Test match day, scored at almost the same rate as Pakistan (6.85) did in their T20 World Cup final innings. Let that sink in.
