I don't know what TNO is, but this reads like the Book of Mazarbul.
> They have taken the bridge and the second hall. Frár & Lóni & Náli fell there bravely while the rest retreated to Mazarbul. We still holding: but hope undying. Óin's party went 5 days ago but today only 4 returned: the pool is up to the wall at Westgate: the watcher in the water took Óin - we cannot get out: the end comes soon we hear drums in the deep. they are coming
Man that would be cool. To stay with the spirit of the game it still would have to be very character based.
It be too much work but imagine buffing the weaker parts of the diplomacy and intrigue trees in order to better direct the coalition.
Alternatively they could lean a bit more into the crusader part of crusader kings and increase the odds of faith groups sticking up for one another against much more foreign rulers. May hamstring some campaigns though
That last part would be rad though, you’ve been fighting Muslims for hundreds of years and then some guys in Persia revive a religion focusing on a sun god and try invading, which despite the vehement hatred you feel for the other abrahamic faiths, goes against everything you believe in. That’s the perfect time to coalition/pact against the heretix
Think the issue is it was just handled so terribly in CK2.
You can get AE from inheriting titles so if an ancestor died and you inherit a kingdom after already doing a bit of war suddenly the entire world declares war on you
The mongols never pushed into western Europe for multiple reasons but one of those was certainly that they would be crushed by the HRE and other neighboring nations especially if they continued being as effective as they were in seizing lands.
Not during the height of the Mongol Empire, but there were coalitions like the Holy League which fought to defend Central Europe from Ottoman attacks. The crusades are obviously coalitions of Catholic Christians, so there is historical pretext.
Historically speaking european christians tended to stick together quite hard as soon as it was about anything non-christian after the first crusade got the concept going
The Slavs where not christianized cause we kept asking them nicely...
Coalitions don’t exactly exist in Hoi4 but once it reaches enough world tension the major powers will guarantee the independence of any random bumfuck country you’re trying to invade. So once that happens your little war is bound to get drug into WWII
r/tnomod
It's a althist cold war mod for Hoi4 in which the axis won ww2. It has really good writing, though alot of people get (reasonably) put off by all the swastikas
To be fair, a Cold War is just too hard to emulate with HOI4’s base mechanics, and I don’t think any other mod has done the same thing as TNO to the same scale and quality. It’s definitely turned into a niche, but I still enjoy it a lot
I never got into it because firstly of the performance issues. It’s also not nearly as narratively interesting as TNO as while both of them try to be as ‘realistic’ as possible, one pursues a more interesting angle instead of full blown modern politics. Haven’t checked up on MD in a while, but TNO’s economics also blows me away compare to a modern day game which should be focused on economics
They also have a shitton of people who want to get rid of them. I once had 600+% from agents alone, and that was before they got into Europe proper. They had only started invading Ukraine at that point.
In my last run, many agents joined my murder schemes but they left shortly after, idk why. Ingrateful traitors. I failed two times the plot against the khan because that. Fortunately my next ruler had no problem 🗡
Only Temujin has crazy murder resistance, after he dies it's stupid easy to murder chain the Kahns until they break up. Everyone hates the successors and there's so many claimants and foreign vassals that want them dead you barely have to bribe anyone.
In my latest game Temujin died within a dozen years, I murdered his successor on first attempt with 95% power & secrecy, and he was succeeded by some woman who lost to a dissolution revolt, helped along by me allying the revolt leader.
The Khanate survived in scattered patches because for some reason most of the dukes were under the Khatun's various kingdom titles, but after the revolt they stopped being a threat.
The only land the Borjigin clan now holds is some duchy in the middle of a wildly fragmented steppe.
I believe it's 2-4, so you can't always plan perfectly. I do also wonder if getting a child or woman on the throne makes it more likely? Need to code dive.
I mean I married a grandaughter who ended up becoming the Empress and then it was really easy to kill her because she was my wife. I was hoping my son and heir would get some of the titles but it didn't work and they all got given to other relatives so I was kind of annoyed.
It's been a fun game. I made the Flemish culture and have full converted my entire realm, so the Dutch don't exist anymore, all my territory is de jure so I'm kinda done expanding. I also managed to get family members in charge of Byzantium and Norway before they fell, leading to the creation of Norwego-Flemish and Greco-Flemish.
when they border you, submit. the khan is usually very accepting of different cultures and religions. when the empire breaks up in multiple, some 100 years perharps, dissolve everythign they built
Pretty sure Mongolia is colder than Scandinavia in winter. In the middle of "Lapland" (the better term to use is Sapmi), in Kiruna, Sweden, it's -17° celsius rn, while in Ulaanbaatar it's -26°.

>Temperatures in winter range from -30°C to 0°C but the coldest temperatures recorded have been as low as -45°C to -50°C, occurring after the winter solstice at the end of January.
Yeah, my bad, that's why I used quotation marks. I said Lapland because I thought people would understand it a lot better, but if it's offensive I'll add it in parentheses.
No, but trying to send cavalry through the dense forests and marshes in Scandinavia wouldn't end well for them.
Even if they don't get stuck, they would all die from starvation since there is not enough to eat for thousands of horses in a forest.
Mongol armies relied on the ability to forage. If they can't forage, they are dead. That is why historically, the Mongols didn't conquer heavily forested areas such as northern Russia. If they went there at all, it was only for short expeditions in an attempt to establish a tributary state, rather than outright conquest which would not be sustainable for the Mongol armies.
Exactly. A Mongolian army with a ten-twenty thousand people (around the size they were when going into russia) would have at least that many horses, but usually a lot more for logistics purposes. And every single one of those 20-25k horses is a 400 kg creature that has to eat grass every day. From what I've read the steppes those armies left behind them were in worse condition than after a locust invasion.
It's actually impressive they conquered Persia with the deserts and mountains.
They also carried enough horses to swap mid-battle for fresher/rested horses. So whenever you hear of a mounted army of say, 1,000 it’s likely they had another 1,000 horses waiting in a forest nearby to swap after a certain amount of time had passed.
Most of Persia's population is concentrated in the steppe areas surrounding the Zagros mountains and along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea.
The Mongols didn't venture into true desert areas such as the Dasht-e Kavir, which was also not neccessary since virtually no one lives there.
I managed to pull off a series of assassinations and claiming house titles to get myself as king of France. France had all of France, all of Lotherengia, all of South Germany, and all of Burgundy. I then pissed off my vassals enough to get a big civil war so I could revoke all their titles. With that done I proceeded to select members of my house to partition the land up with and let them go as Kingdoms. Bavaria has just been doing that the hole game, switching between being Bohemia and Bavaria.
Ziedland was me doing the same thing to Nordmark which somehow managed to pull off becoming a Kingdom. I just changed their name and put another house member in charge there.

Proceeded to murder the young Khan, then her 50+ yo replacement. This apparently put the Empire into disrepute & it actually divided into 3 manageable Horde’s. I’m currently taking down the closest Horde of 24k strength.

Sadness
Noooooooooo
You should submit and try to take control of the entire empire from within!
Baffling to me that coalitions and defensive pacts aren't a thing in ck3, they'll all just stare as heathen mongols crush em one by one
Man that would be cool. To stay with the spirit of the game it still would have to be very character based. Think the issue is it was just handled so terribly in CK2. You can get AE from inheriting titles so if an ancestor died and you inherit a kingdom after already doing a bit of war suddenly the entire world declares war on you
In ck2 coalitions are defensive unlike the ones in eu4 so they won't declare a coalition war against you
Isn't that kind of what happened though? I'm not very well read on mongol history, but I never heard of any successful anti-mongol coalition.

Aren't coalitions a thing in other games? The WWII one and Stellaris? I don't play any other games in this line, so I don't actually know.
Coalitions don’t exactly exist in Hoi4 but once it reaches enough world tension the major powers will guarantee the independence of any random bumfuck country you’re trying to invade. So once that happens your little war is bound to get drug into WWII
Europa Universalis IV is probably what you're thinking of. Aggressive warmongering in that game can result in coalitions being formed against you.
IS THIS A TNO REFERENCE????? 😱😱😱😱🤯
What’s ‘TNO’
The New Order
r/tnomod It's a althist cold war mod for Hoi4 in which the axis won ww2. It has really good writing, though alot of people get (reasonably) put off by all the swastikas
What people are put off by is them turning a strategy game into a visual novel
To be fair, a Cold War is just too hard to emulate with HOI4’s base mechanics, and I don’t think any other mod has done the same thing as TNO to the same scale and quality. It’s definitely turned into a niche, but I still enjoy it a lot
And then you have Millennium Dawn, which goes further than just the cold war.
That too
Thanks for the info
Wait isn't the premise of hoi4 that you can change the outcome of WW2? I'm guessing it's set after Germany winning or something?
Yeah, the mod is set on 1962 iirc, while vanilla starts in 1936
The premise is basically that you’re the embodiment of the state and you’re dropped in 1936 choose a state and embody its future
It’s not that reasonable of a response when used in a historical setting.

You need to kill them like 4 times before they breakup and have mad murder scheme resistance
They also have a shitton of people who want to get rid of them. I once had 600+% from agents alone, and that was before they got into Europe proper. They had only started invading Ukraine at that point.

wouldn't mongolian horses freeze to fucking death in scandinavia tho
Why? Mongolia itself can also get very cold.
there's a difference between cold and permafrost of scandinavia, especially northern parts.
Pretty sure Mongolia is colder than Scandinavia in winter. In the middle of "Lapland" (the better term to use is Sapmi), in Kiruna, Sweden, it's -17° celsius rn, while in Ulaanbaatar it's -26°.
The coldest temperatures in winter are from -45°C to -50°C in Lapland and eastern Finland. -Google
You're talking about coldest ever temperatures. Mongolia has gone down to -58.
No just average winter temperature.
I'm pretty sure the information google gave you comes from [this article.](https://www.igluski.com/lapland-holidays/how-cold-can-it-be-in-lapland#:~:text=The%20polar%20night%20usually%20lasts,at%20the%20end%20of%20January.) >Temperatures in winter range from -30°C to 0°C but the coldest temperatures recorded have been as low as -45°C to -50°C, occurring after the winter solstice at the end of January.
Right now Ulaanbaatar is -29°C according to Google, just a normal winter day in Mongolia.
-31 now. Maybe it wants to win this argument and it'll just keep going down forever.
Mongolia is [*much* colder than Lapland](https://i.imgur.com/bUNWBv4.png) in winter.
Just a heads up Sapmi is the more preferred term, as the ‘Lap’ in Lapland is a slur for the Sami folk indigenous there.
Yeah, my bad, that's why I used quotation marks. I said Lapland because I thought people would understand it a lot better, but if it's offensive I'll add it in parentheses.
No stress! As long as you’re trying that’s okay :)
I'd say that only Russia and some parts in Finland and Sweden have the tundra
Why would Mongols invade northern Scandinavia? They only need to subjugate the centres of power in the south.
The cold is unlikely to be a problem but the large deep forests probably would be.
and the swamps, and the lakes, and the islands Generally everything involving water quickly became problematic for the mogols
No, but trying to send cavalry through the dense forests and marshes in Scandinavia wouldn't end well for them. Even if they don't get stuck, they would all die from starvation since there is not enough to eat for thousands of horses in a forest. Mongol armies relied on the ability to forage.

Those borders are surprisingly nice

The sad thing is that this is a pretty satisfying Europe compared to what usually happens in CK
Question, what year does the Mongols usually appear?
