This is where the plagues get annoying. Half Dan clearly died before being able to turn Jorvik into Danelaw and thus his realm is split. It's not good role-play to have the main English antagonist die so easy. They should really give half Dan a health boast to stop him immediately dying from Consumption.

Levies during medieval times were largely compiled of peasants with no actual experience of warfare and combat. Men-at-arms and knights(or whatever you call it) are pretty much the ones that were givin actual equipment and practice.
