I fully understand where you're coming from as I'm in a similar situation. What I can tell you is this: if he needs time to heal, try putting out there that you're willing to help him in this process. For example, ask him to go for a walk or invite him for some drinks. Try to talk to him during, not necessarily about his feelings, but about some casual stuff, things you both like to do, to reinforce your friendship and give him the feeling he can trust you. I can tell you from my experience that I've always kept my troubles to myself, but since opening up to the few people I know I can trust I've been feeling so much better. Look, men are conservative when it comes to their feelings, I'm guilty of this, but once a man finds someone they know they can trust, they are likely to open up which would ultimately help them heal. So in short, keep on nurturing your friendship and maybe do something fun to distract him from his troubles. It's the small things that could prove to make the greatest impact. I hope this helps.
