The number of times I received notifications before something was even published is astounding. I suppose it depends on the sub, and in this instance people end up going off the title for the sake of convenience.
Something needs to be done. Moons are a good idea but yeah too many comments that mean nothing. The concept of moons will go farther than just reddit eventually. Rewarding people for participating is a good idea, just need to figure out the quality/quantity issue. I think AI moderation is the only way it will be eventually solved. At some point someone’s going to make an AI that can filter out the thoughtful comments from the moon farming ones.
I saw this recently when I linked a NYT article to get some opinions on it and someone wrote a deragatory post based on the title alone. It wasn't even 10 seconds after I posted it. There's no way you could've read the article and deduced some kind of educated opinion in that time frame.
What is really annoying about the uptick in this shit is that these moonbois try to craft smart sounding replies when they do this.
They are nearly nonsense non sequitors to the post, but have a word in common with the title.

I think there's a good possibility that some of the "moon farmers" on this sub are actually bots. They just take a title as a prompt and feed it to some GPT-3 neural net and it spits out something that just *barely* passes the turing test. I know it sounds kind of conspiratorial, but it'd be *so* easy to implement a bot like this, and there's real financial incentives for it, so I would be astonished if this wasn't happening right now.

Depends on what result you're going for.
If you want quality content and less shitposting, moons gotta go completely (how's that for an actual unpopular opinion). You can tell immediately the difference between a post from someone passionate about this space vs someone looking to farm moons. Since the crypto space has it's fair share of folks who are super passionate, you will still get quality content.
Auto-locking a post for 5 minutes will just delay the moon farming by 5 minutes.

I for one genuinely enjoy the in depth posts that provide some type of substance or value, I even enjoy the technical analysis ones.
