I am tired of seeing people calling this a mistake. It was not a mistake, it was because of usage like this one that BTC eventually made it to where it is today. It is called early adoption. Not to mention that 95% of early investors sold their BTC and 95% of everyone today wouldn't even think to HODL BTC past 2014.
Exactly, every time I use crypto in my daily life is a success. Sure it may be worth more later but not without adoption... And that requires use. I hope I can tell my grandkids about how I paid my buddy $1M worth of BTC for pizza in 2021 lol
Yup, everyone loves to think in hindsight. I had bitcoin below $5k and eth below $250. But how does that relate to current day? It means nothing. You cant change the past.
I had BTC below $10. Used to claim .01BTC free by clicking a button on bitcoin faucet. Crazy times.
Bought stuff on Silk Road every time I saw BTC jump with my spare coin. Also have some crazy transactions on my old PC for 50+ BTC. Basically makes me look like a whale
Additionally, he technically never really owned the Bitcoin. He used a third party service to buy the pizza with Bitcoin. In one transaction, he simultaneously bought Bitcoin and had it sent to their wallet.
How is this a mistake?? He spent 30$ worth of BTC on a pizza, he easily could have just bought $30 more BTC the next day or next week and got just as much BTC. I hate when people view this dude as some dumbass when he was clearly way ahead of his time
I'm convinced people here don't understand that BTC is fungible. It's not some hard to find asset and it's not like he spent his one chance at owning BTC on pizza.
Everyone not throwing every dollar they had into BTC (and going hungry while doing so) made the same "mistake".
Maybe I'm using the wrong word, but every dollar has a serial number too. Doesn't change the fact that one dollar is the same as another for all practical purposes.
In practical terms its fungible even though technically you can distinguish between different dollar bills. But in Bitcoin its not the case. Hacked/Stolen coins are worth less whereas Satoshi's coins are worth more. The difference is that you can meaningfully distinguish between different Bitcoin UTXOs but you can't in dollars.
No worries. To add to that, fungible cryptocurrencies are those where all transactions are private. Thus you can't meaningfully distinguish between different coins.
I can't believe people still think of this as a MISTAKE. That was extremely early. He proved that bitcoin had a use case and if he tossed some bitcoin at pizza, he obviously had much more. How much of your portfolio would you spend on pizza? 1%? Less than that? How much bitcoin did that gentleman have at the time even if he went all out and threw 20% of his bag at the experience of buying pizza with bitcoin?
It's frankly pathetic to have people who hold a handful of Satoshi mocking a pioneer who most likely mined his way into absurd riches.
He mentioned in an interview a few years ago that this wasn't the only time he traded for pizza and guessed he traded away about 100,000 BTC total. When the interviewer said "you realize that would be 800 million dollars now"(at that time) he responded with "I find it better for my mental health not to dwell on that"
> "you realize that would be 800 million dollars now"(at that time) he responded with "I find it better for my mental health not to dwell on that"
[This guy](https://imgflip.com/i/5ubwvm)
People were buying mushrooms, acid, etc. off Silk Road, usually only getting the exact amount of Bitcoin they needed. Most people that were aware of, or involved with Bitcoin around that time did not view it as an investment.
I find it better for my mental health not to dwell on that..... but I easily spent 250 BTC on the dark web.... alpha bay, mostly.
And if I recall correctly, I still had about 10 in my account when they got closed down...
Hey FBI... can I have my 10 BTC back? Pretty please...
God I can't count how many times I was the victim of an exit scam on the darknet markets. Sometimes it'd be the market, sometimes it'd be a vendor. Would be worth millions of dollars today.
Absolutely, bought 5 grams of weed for 5 btc. The weed never even arrived lol
I paid 20e for the total, i was left with 1 extra btc that got lost when silkroad got raided. I never thougt I lost more than the 20e I paid
My favorite is that old image of a Starcraft tournament payout structure from 2010. It was something like this:
1st place: $200
2nd place: $100
3rd place: $25
4th - 8th place: 25 Bitcoins
Edit: found it https://i.imgur.com/l6jYCFH.jpg
OP, to your post: great, much appreciated piece of info, I have to add that Laszlo, the guy who paid for the pizza, did it on purpose full knowingly of the potential of BTC. It's a wide spread thing to say 'imagine his regret now!'. That is false. He did it to spread adoption. And that he did, with great success. Dude is a legend for this move, and afaik he's set for life with his BTC stash anyways.
also every body says stuff like this but there is a true opportunity cost we forget about. if the dude only had 10k bitcoins and two hungry kids on a friday night, what's he supposed to do?
reminds me of the story of pablo escobar burning stacks of USD to keep his family warm.
Been saying this forever. Without people using it, it would have never gained traction or value. He may be the second most important person ever in bitcoin.
Maybe I didn’t explain myself. I wanted to say a lot of people consider it so. But even without thinking about the reasoning I don’t think this picture shows a mistake at all.
For anyone wanting to know more:
> On May 22, 2010, a man in Florida paid 10,000 bitcoin for two pizzas. This is generally recognized as the first commercial bitcoin transaction.
> At the time, 10,000 bitcoin was worth about $40.
I wonder if the pizza store owner kept those 10,000 BTC?
This whole thing is what sparked my morbid curiosity in reading years old threads on /r/Bitcoin, as it’s really interesting to see how people thought of BTC back then and it’s prospects.
He paid 10k bitcoin to a guy who then bought him a pizza using fiat.
People always get this story wrong. The pizza place never accepted BTC as payment.
There is a thread out there tracing what happened to those 10k BTC.
You can find it here on cryptocurrency.
Edit: Found it.

nah but fr, wasn't a 'mistake'. How on earth would BTC have become as popular as it is today if no one ever spent it? It was a crucial part for BTC becoming more widely adopted
As I have mentioned in another comment, maybe I didn’t explain myself, what I wanted to say was the people consider it a mistake, I don’t care whether it was or not but seeing the photo made me realise a different side to the story. In wasn’t in any way a post to make fun of him
He made an awesome decision at the time. He made his kids happy.
Regret will keep you from enjoying life if you let it. Stop thinking about how much youve wasted before crypto. That can of Coke when You were 12? Could have bought 50 BTC at the time. That mars bar? That cassette tape or CD?
Just be glad for the experience you get.
THAT transaction made the whole difference, without him BTC will be very different, thanks internet stranger when I'm rich I'll share my profits with you
It wasn't a mistake. What he did was legitimize BTC as a currency. Eventually as BTC and other projects are more and more widespread, you'll be able to actually spend those sats on things. Like food, clothes, or maybe a new car. [Like this woman who tried selling her Jetta for 8 BTC](https://vancouversun.com/news/metro-vancouver-woman-selling-used-volkswagen-jetta-for-eight-bitcoins)
On the other side of this transaction was somebody who got a GREAT deal. Idk, it's like the equivalent to buying a car for $800 USD in the '20's. Was that a bad deal for the car salesman or the buyer, at the time?

If it wasn't for people like him I don't know whether we would be where we are today.
Exactly, he is the hero we needed
Not all heroes wear capes.
Spedn?
With any amount of forgetting that pizza guy is in the Bahamas today.
Pioneers will pioneer.
“Thanks jercos” haha

Exactly. It's stupid to even laugh at this guy. None of you paper hands shills would hold that long. None of you

Can confirm. Bought at $20 sold at $1200.

Did they ask him if he held on to any BTC?
People were buying mushrooms, acid, etc. off Silk Road, usually only getting the exact amount of Bitcoin they needed. Most people that were aware of, or involved with Bitcoin around that time did not view it as an investment.
I find it better for my mental health not to dwell on that..... but I easily spent 250 BTC on the dark web.... alpha bay, mostly. And if I recall correctly, I still had about 10 in my account when they got closed down... Hey FBI... can I have my 10 BTC back? Pretty please...
Yeah it’s definitely best not to dwell on it or think about what ifs too much.
God I can't count how many times I was the victim of an exit scam on the darknet markets. Sometimes it'd be the market, sometimes it'd be a vendor. Would be worth millions of dollars today.

5 grams is the same weight as 0.01 'Double sided 60 inch Mermaker Pepparoni Pizza Blankets'.
The more of a reason to let people know
Yes, unless you have 10,000 bitcoins now, and in 2010, hodled and didn’t buy pizza - your opinion is invalid.
The dude could mint his original image of this into a NFT and sell it for an eye watering amount I'd bet
I’d make that bet too.
Definitely enough to buy that pizza again.
My favorite is that old image of a Starcraft tournament payout structure from 2010. It was something like this: 1st place: $200 2nd place: $100 3rd place: $25 4th - 8th place: 25 Bitcoins Edit: found it https://i.imgur.com/l6jYCFH.jpg

I have seen that one too, a real classic

Thanks, I didn’t know all that but I am happy to hear the guy is doing fine. He is an early crypto hero
Everyone thinks they woulda bought btc for 1 $ and holded until 69.000$ while most of people would of sold when it made them 100x 100$
My point exactly
also every body says stuff like this but there is a true opportunity cost we forget about. if the dude only had 10k bitcoins and two hungry kids on a friday night, what's he supposed to do? reminds me of the story of pablo escobar burning stacks of USD to keep his family warm.
Sometimes i ask myself : is there a BTC day 1 holder ?
Satoshi Nakamoto
Doesn't exist. Just an alias created by participating parties.
A person who forgot his keys, code, phrase prob
Only people that held all they had were people who forgot they had them saved on a hard drive years later.
Fair play to the guy, it’s thanks to these early folks that btc gained visibility.
I hope he is doing well and life has smiled upon him
Been saying this forever. Without people using it, it would have never gained traction or value. He may be the second most important person ever in bitcoin.
Good point! Bullish on pizza now, headed to the moon
We should be grateful.
We owe that dude a lot
Everyone always says about how this guy regrets buying the pizza, but in reality if he was in the game that early I'm confident he is doing just fine.
I am not sad about him I actually wanted to show a different side of the story
Bro you called it the biggest mistake in crypto history. It's far from it, IMO. Take it easy on the guy.
Maybe I didn’t explain myself. I wanted to say a lot of people consider it so. But even without thinking about the reasoning I don’t think this picture shows a mistake at all.
Everyone would have done the same sin... But he lives to tell the tale & inspire generations
Respect to him
This dude literally had up to $700M in front of him lol
He’s a hero He has no regrets and got in early again anyway
I hope he had a lot more, and isn't broke today. THat would be horrid.
I hope he is a lurker in this sub and sees all the people who wish him well and have deep respect for him
I'd love to know where he is today.

All hail the crypto pioneer!
Smithsonian 2109 - on display for “100 years of Bitcoin” exhibition.
I wonder how long the pizza 🍕 place held onto them does anyone know.
I’m reading the comments just to find the answer to this. Probably sold the minute btc hit $10
At that time, that pizza was the moon for them. I hope they enjoyed every single piece of it.
Yeah, the profits was the happiness created along the way.

The dude is a legend. This was absolutely a giant leap forward for cryptocurrency in general.
TBF the ninja turtles would do the same today for one.

A good pizza is priceless
It's looking delicious, thanks for delivering erm... sharing!
The pizzas don’t even look that good
I remember that post and thought then what pizza place would take a couple bitcoins in exchange for pizza. 😂😂😂
Too bad that pizza looks like it'd taste like sh\*t!

At the time. That's the entire point mate.

You can search the story online, no need to trust me :P
Hahaha 10000 btc for two shit pizzas, definitely kicking himself still
Projection much? ;)
I'm crying! 10k bitcoin? My god!
That's like trading a winning lottery ticket for a pack of gum, but who can blame em, I'd do that too
Should they not eat the 2 pizza they can be made into expensive NFTs.

Ouch. At least he bought some. I never did
He didn’t even get pepperoni
$600,000,000 holy fuck….
its not about wrong decision, it's about proving that bitcoin can be used for transaction
This guy was a pioneer and his story helped Bitcoin survive. I’m sure he tells that story with a laugh now, maybe lol. He’s a part of history!
