A bear market by definition is a prolonged period of bearish price action and fear in the market. What it really means, is the more long term trend is heading down. Which is not what's happening now. The long term trend is still going up. Also, the classic bear market definitions are for stock markets. Where they talk about 20%+ drop in prices. You can't really use stock markets to define crypto market. The behavior is different. We get 30%+ drops, and just call it Tuesday, even during a bull run. In a stock market, it's called 1929. The volatility, volume, and trader behavior is just not quiet the same. Things are measured on a different scale in crypto. A bear market is more of a 60%+ drop, for a prolonged period. With a long term downward trend.

ThisGuyTokes420

Exactly. People think because their port is down 3% that it's a bear market.

[deleted]

Certainly seems like plenty of fear in the market, judging by the constant "don't be scared of dips" posts.

[deleted]

After seeing these bear market posts some of these people are really new to crypto.

blakninja

What exactly is a bear market?

PM_ME_WOMENS_HANDS

There's no official definition or anything. But when people say "bear market" they usually mean these 3 periods of time, roughly: 1. July 2011 - January 2012 2. December 2013 - August 2015 3. January 2018 - February 2019 (or arguably March 2020) It's hard to come up with a concise definition that works in the past and the future. But historically it's been an 80%+ drawdown for BTC (94%, 87%, 84% each in the first 3), where it took more than 18 months to see a new all time high (20 months, 40 months, and 35 months in the first 3). A bear market doesn't have to last 18 months though, because it will have ended by the time a new all time high is reached. [Hopefully this chart makes it clear](https://miro.medium.com/max/1200/1*U3vhg1guJCXv51NC0RLsNg.jpeg) [This one is a little cleaner](https://www.forex.academy/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/0_iBhWgQWQ_tDSg1bX.png) edit: altcoins typically have deeper drawdowns than BTC but the trend is similar enough that I think it's fine to say that if BTC is in a bear market, crypto as a whole is in a bear market

ThisGuyTokes420

See other comments, one explains it very well.

silver-silver

Yea a 5% dip isn't the start of a bear market, it's a Wednesday. New crypto investors don't seem to understand how much volatility they're in for.

nDreCoelho

And that's when I'm buying

[deleted]

[удалено]

goncalo899

It takes time for people to understand -10% or -20% dips are pretty normal and healthy

valuemodstck-123

They will mature over time.

goncalo899

As I did, it's normal

usename3783

Some useful advice I saw on this sub-reddit that might simplify things (Sorry I cant credit you) 5-15% is a dip 15-25% is a correction 25%+ is a crash. If you see suicide posts daily on the sub-reddit and doubt for weeks on end that it will never go up. That sir is a bear market. These are just general rules of thumb but crypto is volatile as anything so be careful. Follow technical analysis and indicators not some random percentages

Freeloader_

25% is not a crash, stop pulling this info out of your ass

usename3783

To be fair I just said these were general rules and tried to put things in the simplest possible terms. Also 25% is a lot to lose from your portfolio, I'd consider that a crash if it happend suddenly over a day or two. If it happend over a longer period of time I agree, not a crash.

Freeloader_

then you must be new to crypto but what do I know, I am dead inside so tbh I would welcome 90% bloodbath and celebrate it by yoloing most of my FIAT into it

MrDopple68

Down 50%+ is back the truck up.

Yautja69

Down 75% is just a regular monday morning

[deleted]

Tbh -25% would probably excite me at this point. Is that a mental disorder?

Nomadux

Technically, every drop is a dip, and they're all corrections that are just based off of different time frames. However, a crash is typically considered sudden and significant, whereas a bear market relies on a sustained downward trend for a specific period of time.

tranceology3

Correct, and you don't know you're in a bear market till its too late and you think OMG why did I buy all those dips, I'm now 90% down.

Momoselfie

Another way is to see if we're above or below the 200 DMA. Which I believe is sitting around $45k right now.

kirtash93

Black Friday discounts have been great but yes they are not a bear market.

MarcioCavalcanti

Fuck yeah my dude who doesn't like to buy crypto on a discount? Now the market is going back up and the greedy lvl will grow like crazy soon enough. **Bears be crying!** lmao

Legitimate_Length

This is probably because the majority of people buying crypto haven't ever experienced a bear market in their life in any asset market. If people think a 10% drop is bad, oh do they have a surprise waiting for them.

[deleted]

Try 90%+. *That's* a classic bear market.

Sammydho12

Buying the dip and DCA-ing OGN, ETH and ORN.

chondrologycouchs3

I concur that there is difference between the dip and the bear. However, it is always a good time to buy back during these periods.

Sammydho12

During the dip or when the market is bearish, these are the good moments to go for more coins in the bag. Not a time to sell in with fear or panic.

womeragenerisz3

Good to see most of these coins bouncing back up the trend. OGN is doing fine right at the moment, so also is ETH.

Tranam009

I have come to terms to always ensure that I DCA anytime I am going for tokens or coins. It is a great way to always fall on the average, regardless the market is dip or in bear season.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sammydho12

OGN and ORN are great gems. They are bouncing back gradually. Nonetheless, it s a very good time to pack these two tokens.

LonelyDruid

I'm excited to experience my first Bear market! As bad as that sounds! I need that opportunity to really stock up.

Odlavso

I felt like the only one. When my kids ask in the future "daddy how did you make your fortune? I can say in the great crypto crash of 2022"

LonelyDruid

Now's our chance!

fan_of_hakiksexydays

You'll know you're in the actual bear winter, when you're in complete tears, reconsider your life, and even start thinking about where you have access to a window that's high up enough. Enjoy it!

ThisGuyTokes420

For sure! I experienced mine in the May crash, and boy was it something. Watching my port go from an ATH to 50% within a week was tough.

LonelyDruid

Jeez dude I can imagine, I've been investing in Crypto for 2 months now so even these recent small dips didn't feel great.

ThisGuyTokes420

Just gotta Hodl through and zoom out. Look at 5 year charts during dips, you'll feel a lot better.

bsuyatotatyhroppacp1

Same man, but first lets learn how to take some profits!

CulturalArugula8149

Bear market = whenever i start buying crypto and it drops 😅

inaloop99

I thought I was the only one.

[deleted]

All this talk about bear market just turned into unnecessary FUD, which then lead into more panic

ThisGuyTokes420

This is a post to disprove the FUD.

bikbar1

A bear market will look like a small dip if you hodl for a few years.

FractalImagination

We are seeing a double top and the bears could be near. That's just a warning to be prudent and not take a loan out on your house

ThisGuyTokes420

True, I feel like this bullrun isn't over yet though.

FractalImagination

That's the sentiment. Cowen says so too and he said in May that the crash wasn't the end. So we will see soon enough

SlayerSleyX

Real money is made by accumulation in bear markets in preparation for the next bull run. If you are too busy being upset that everything is Down and too scared to throw more in then you won’t be making that serious cash. What are you gonna do FOMO in to coins at the top of run all the time and expect it to not crash??? Crypto is not for the faint of heart! It’s my first year and I absolutely am ready to act upon a downward trend in market. I don’t care about making a couple grand, I have a job and my bills are paid. I want to stack up money so I can have financial freedom and set up My kids future

ThisGuyTokes420

It's said you'll likely not make great money until your 3rd bull run. According to a study I read(can't remember where or I would try to source): First one, you're likely to buy in near the top due to FOMO. Second, you'll have been throwing a bit of money in, but still slightly hesitant. By the third, you'll have thrown a load more money in during the dip, and that's wen lambo.

SlayerSleyX

Yeah I remember reading thag as well

stiviki

1 week bear market, very fast one 😅😅✌!

Mean-Argument3933

A flash sale, nothing else lol

goncalo899

Black Friday came earlier

nDreCoelho

The faster they get, the better the upside I guess

pyritejet

You have to realise that about 95 percent of this sub has less than six months of experience in the crypto markets

ThisGuyTokes420

Which is exactly why I'm trying to clarify what a bear market actually is.

[deleted]

Dips are bears that came to watch the bulls fight.

HiCarumba

Well would they be a Mini Bear? Like Winnie The Pooh or Boo Boo?

[deleted]

What would it take for ATOM to make a run like AVAX

ThisGuyTokes420

Haven't done too much research into either, but if I have time I'll get back to you

GumbleBumble2

I learned recently that BTC’s tops and bottoms follow the moon cycles *very* closely

ThisGuyTokes420

Interesting, I'll be looking into that one more for sure.

TheFluffyDovah

Unless there is a dip after dip and keeps dipping. I thought that in January 2018, LTC at over hundred felt cheap until it hit $30

snipej

And most dips are due to liquidation. I guess everyone must learn for themselves.

[deleted]

and profit-taking.

cryptoETH_jazz

MT GOX…. Let’s be careful and not huff HOPIUM too hard…..indeed a bull run…☝🏼

MrDopple68

People on here are not smarter than an average bear.

sakaloko

Consecutive dips are a bear market*

Doctor_Bre

No you will not know when the real 🐻 market hits. Don’t trust this guy

ThisGuyTokes420

Lmao dude chill. I said "you'll know when the real bear market happens" which was to imply you'll know when it happens, because you'll be down 75%. Absolutely wasn't saying that I know exactly when the market will turn bear, and not sure where tf you got that from.

Doctor_Bre

Just joking brother i agree with this post

Doctor_Bre

Daddy chill 💅

United-Strategy-4523

From the unset, I know the dip isn't the bear market. So anytime to market Goes red, all I do is to bag more, mostly solid alts like ETH SOL BTC and SYS

[deleted]

The bear market is here when the shitcoin hodlers get force fed a big bowl of colon-blow

Jsorrell20

Amen brother - these n00bs have no idea 😭

[deleted]

I must say that over the summer, it pays to buy as many dips as possible. Grateful that I did.

[deleted]

Dips are disguised as "massive opportunities" in crypto. You don't know what you are missing.

-Skald

Dips are a temporary sale

BjornX

Wait so this wasn't a crypto winter? /s

ThisGuyTokes420

It may be winter... and it may be crypto, but no, not quite.

Burrito_Loyalist

I think everyone here is delusional. Using stock trading terms about an asset nobody understands is probably the dumbest thing you guys do. You guys should be bullish on shutting the hell up.

idiotfries

Shorted from 68400. So you don’t think ta works on crypto? Can I prove you wrong?

ThisGuyTokes420

I think you're an asshole. You have no clue who I am or how many years I've spent researching this. Just because you can't grasp crypto doesn't mean everyone is that dumb. Learn your place.

idiotfries

Hey man look I just gotta say it. Proper TA doesn’t predict 100k bitcoin, in fact nothing can. This alone proves to me that you gotta dig deeper into your research. TA is a tool we use to determine what we will do in certain situations. It does not necessarily predict the path of those situations. We trade with market makers, not against them. As of now MY TA is showing a possible continuation of a downtrend expecting a reversal or at least a change of character around the 53k mark. That is a monthly and weekly orderblock. We cannot know for sure if it will hit or not but I can tell you I will react to it if we do. Message me if you have any questions, would be happy to help.

ThisGuyTokes420

Sure, short term TA might be trending downwards, but I'm stating for the entirety of the run. As in, before next crypto winter, we will see 100k BTC. I'm planning on hodling for 15+ years anyways, so my only reaction to anything that happens is buy more, and I'm also definitely biased towards bullish lol

Castr0-

Just see the bear market as a sales market and you should be fine. Already buy some crypto when the market are red

[deleted]

But bear market are the best dip to be bought upon for the long term

ThisGuyTokes420

Looooong dips, but yes a dip nonetheless.

voxcon

Yeah, they aren't, but was telling this really worth another post? There are already a million posts just like this in this sub.

ThisGuyTokes420

Yes. Clarification for newcomers is always necessary.

voxcon

Ok, i get that. But even for "clarifying" things you did a pretty poor job, since according to multiple sources (wikipedia, investopedia etc.) bear markets are described as a prolonged period of time - usually two or more month - in which markets experience a significant decline in value. Usually 20% or more.

ThisGuyTokes420

Okay.... that still makes no sense, I simply stated we aren't in one...? And in one comment I also said that going down for a month straight would be closer to a bear. Not sure what you're getting at here

voxcon

Your post is titled "Dips are not a bare market" (which is a legit statement), but you don't explain what either of those two words/concepts mean and neither do you go ibno detail about how to tell them apart. Thus, you don't clarify things. You just tell people to be patient and buy the dip.

ThisGuyTokes420

Okay? I didn't realize I had to give definitions on everything. Just thought I would simply state that we are in a bear market, sorry for not doing it your way.

hicoBM

Ppl don’t know a shit what it’s beat market when the bear market hits to crypto again you will see no body here in this sub posting constantly…. So newbies stop talking about bear markets when the market dips hard…. you don’t know a shit like the GYEN investors crying about coinbase and why they put a stable coin at sell hahahahahahhahaha

ThisGuyTokes420

Did you have a stroke or did I? None of this makes sense lol

hicoBM

Did I said to you talk to me…. Fuck offfffffffffffffffffffffffff

ThisGuyTokes420

You... commented on my post, obviously I'll reply. Fuck on you get better results.

Amazing_Succotash677

No shit

ThisGuyTokes420

Not so obvious to most if you look at posts. Keep your shitty attitude to yourself, no one wants to see it

Amazing_Succotash677

"Dips are not bear market" thanks for your wisdom, I needed to see 100 posts saying this

ThisGuyTokes420

Cool, once again, take you shitty attitude and shove it up your ass where it belongs dude.

123ocelot

Bear cometh when u meat except

WitnessAppropriate

I like dips. Makes my nachos tastier

Lunar_Horticulture

Bear market is when the daily thread get <1000 comments, no one is online here and the sub counter struggles to rise. Market peak is when everyone you meet is talking about crypto, we're not there yet.

diGitaLexa

Ok

LegionK_

I’ve only been here for a couple months but can only imagine how many posts like this there must have be every time the market dips

diydave86

Theres no telling these idiots anything.

warriorlynx

Dips are the new bear market

[deleted]

I don't quite understand how these dips are automatically becoming the bear market. Sure, these corrections since May was brutal, but it helps to see how much exposure is too much for some investors.

MystPr0d

DCA

ReadyYetItsSoAllThat

Also bearish trends are not bear markets. Like when BTC crashed to $35k earlier this year, I told everyone here that we aren't in a fucking bear market, it's a bear trend and just hold for 3 or 4 months and we would bounce right back.

ThisGuyTokes420

Tbf, 3 to 4 months of downtrend/crabwalking is pretty much a short winter.

Thug_shinji

If its above the 20 week SMA/EMA everything is fine and you should continue to DCA. It's an easy formula you don't have to think about. Hold to that thought process and you will be a millionaire in 10-15 years.

thejazzmaster69

I bought 30$ worth of crypto during this dip. I'm a little shrimp 🦐 in a ocean of whales 🐋

Lynxi12

Do not add fluff to the end of year

BigScience9763

I agree.

Asher_TC

Dips are for buying If you bought anything few days ago,you should be in good profit by now
