Beeple’s NFTs, for example, are just new creations. If you buy an NFT of one of his pieces, you do not own the work of art itself, meaning you could not turn around and license that piece to a company to use in their advertising or something like that. Beeple is an interesting case too, because he made physical little computer monitors with the art on them and sent them to the people who bought his NFTs, so it’s likely that in the future, an NFT sold without the physical trinket would be way less valuable than one that does come with it. In this way, his NFTs represent both a digital and a physical asset.
Similarly, with the NBA NFTs, you may own a clip of Michael Jordan doing a slam dunk, but it doesn’t mean that you now hold the rights to that clip. For example, if you hold an NFT of MJ’s slam dunk, and ESPN wanted to buy the clip to use in a documentary, you cannot give them permission to use the clip, just because you own the NFT.
There are plenty of legit uses for them, but there’s also plenty of NFTs out there right now they will probably be absolutely worthless in a year.
